Meanwhile, the Republican War on Democracy continues apace.
Happily, Rachel Maddow brings us up to date on the latest in the GOP’s out-and-out assault on voting and voting rights in states all over the country. The new laws passed by GOP-controlled legislatures in the wake of their 2010 electoral victories, are expected to have a wildly disproportionate disenfranchising affect on voters who tend to vote Democratic, and are likely to make voting much more difficult for some 5 million Americans, according to a new study from NYU’s Brennan Center for Justice.
Apparently, Republicans must be convinced, for some reason, that they can’t win elections in a fair fight. Wonder why.
Maddow’s latest maddening update includes an interview with the Republican Supervisor of Elections in Volusia County, FL who was “sick to her stomach” after being forced to turn in a high school teacher to law enforcement for registering students to vote now that Florida has criminalized such activities. And, no, we’re not exaggerating. That is the same new FL GOP law which has led the non-partisan League of Women Voters to cancel all voter registration in the state of Florida, after doing so for the past 72 years, because the potential penalties for doing so have simply become too onerous….

I think that the causes of most of the Occupy Wall Street grievances stem from the corruption of US democracy. Thus, it should be the #1 issue of OWS.
If OWS were to only have one demand, this should be it.
It’s really sad when someone like Brad can consistently and passionately stay focused on this tragic attack on the foundation of our democracy for so many years yet the problem continues to get worse. The OWS message about the 1% fits neatly into the voting crisis because it is shrapnel from the corporate money control of our government. If the voting and corporate control issues are addressed separately the effort will be ludicrous. Puppet politicians will continue to win if the machines/system continue(s) to be riggable. Of course most here realize that without that first crime of b*$% jr’s illegal selection being overturned, the fight would become exponentially harder as it has. Fortunately there are still some Republicans who haven’t gotten the playbook.
Hello Brad Friedman,
Every time the GOP tries or succeeds in reducing the amount of voters have people do a search on any browser for Goo goo government. The result will bring them to Paul Weyrich a “true” leader in the “I want only as few voters as possible” so his party has a chance for “victory”. As he states the chances of his party goes up when the number of voters goes down. I guess his ultimate goal is only one registered voter so his side wins.
