First!
Yes, it's January 1st, 2008... and do you know where your EVM is sleeping over?

Maybe instead of wishing it to be happy, we should just try not to fuck it up quite so badly....

I don't feel exactly irrationally exhuberant, but I'll confess to a modicum of hope qthat 2009 will treat us a little more kindly, a little more gently. Lord knows we deserve it. We seem to have somehow survived (albeit battered nearly beyond recognition) the vilest "administration" ever. Let us set about undoing the damage, a bit at a time.

Agreed but...I dunno...
"Have a Merry Christmas & a Less-Fucked-Up New Year!" just doesn't have quite the same ring to it somehow, you know?

I know. I know. I'm taking this realism phase to the extreme. I'm starting to be able to hang with that egregiously misunderstood Grinch. The bodhisattva who stole Christmas....
Hard to cheer up, hard to cheer up, oh, so hard to cheer up...

URGENT! Israeli Navy Attacking Civilian Mercy Ship! TAKE ACTION IMMEDIATELY!
http://www.opednews.com/...-Release-081230-267.html
[ed note: MsKitty, that happened two mornings ago and all passengers are safe, so I substituted in just a link. People still should take action, but, I repeat, everyone who was on the Dignity when the Israelis shot at it and rammed it three times is safe. --99]

#5 99,
Nice choice of analogical entity.
My own heart/head/psyche seems alternately dominated by Baba Ram Dass & Atilla the Hun.
And my current personal idiot-relief fictional hero is Alan Shore, from Boston Legal (a show I discovered only recently & which is about 80% infuriatingly ridiculous but 20% satisfyingly leftist and brilliant).
His character has this almost Zen-like ability to see--and yet remain detached from--reality, even when that reality is maddeningly inhumane & horrific.
Plus, call me crazy, but James Spader--even aging, portly & priggish--is still somehow cute as a cupcake. And I need my goddamn sweets sometimes! Just to try & smother the damn stench of the ankle-deep reality-muck we're forced to slosh around in!
I hope you let loose on NewYearsEve, girl. We're still finding beer bottles under the couch.

Wow, BradBlog's FIVE year anniversary? Seems like only yesterday...
See that blue diagonal line in the picture up top? That's the lowly li'l bradblog, shooting us all upwards towards truth & justice & sanity!
(hey, a little corniness never killed anybody)
Remember to vote for Brad January 5th for the Weblog Awards, y'all.
Good way, imho, to say 'THANK YOU, Brad'

I had the oddest dream last night. I'll spare y'all the details (it was a long dream), but the gist was that there had been a nuclear war, and the first part of my dream was before the war. Life was going on as it does...I had family surrounding me, and even had a toddler (not gonna happen *grins* my baby is 16)
..but the last part of the dream was in a time after the war, when the earth was starting to recover. (Yes, I know the realities if it did happen - this was just a dream). Thing is, I tend to have very vivid, graphic dreams about war sometimes, especially when something is upsetting me, and it's always a nightmare that keeps me up the rest of the night.
This time, it wasn't.
This time, the death and destruction were over, and we were rebuilding. We were starting to see animals again (I remember a sea turtle, the first one since the war - don't know the significance of that, though I live in the foothills in Tennessee far from the ocean) The human population was living in groups, isolated from each other, not knowing if there were other survivors. I remember a group of people showing up, and they brought their animals with them, and the black lab that was my companion for 15 years was there with me. And we knew the worst was over, and there was hope.
Doesn't take much to interpret the emotions that caused that dream.
Here's to those who have come and gone during the past five years, and especially to those who have stayed to fight the good fight even when it seemed we were losing.
Five years. Wow. That's pretty awesome!
Congratulations everyone, and thanks, Brad, for starting this place exactly when it was needed.
*singing* "It's been a long December, and there's reason to believe maybe this year will be better than the last..."
In case I haven't told y'all lately - you people ROCK!

Since the price is down from $5 a gallon to $2 a gallon, they're going to tax us 150% to get it back to $5 a gallon. Can't leave us with any net worth, while they're looting, you know.
Joan
I was a saint for New Year's Eve. Berry flavored sparkling water. No calories. On a serious diet. Avoided all feasts for the holidays in favor of celery. It actually cheered me up because I'm having much less difficulty zipping up my pants. However, as you have probably noticed, things aren't so cheery out there for way too many, so I remind myself about all the people who are desperate for a steak, or a bowl of ice cream to keep myself from becoming fat.
And I'm really glad "Shore" gets put on YouTube whenever he pipes up with something great. I think this is their last season though and you're gonna have to do reruns pretty soon.

(I know Brad I never seem to keep it in a single post)
Anyway,
My final 2009 New Years Wit.
For 2009, I hope our officials drink lots of alcohol. Beer, Wine, Hard. Their choice.
Because...
I'd rather shake hands and get piss on em, than to need the US Constitution and find out it's no good because it's urine soaked.
Please, if you read this uphold your oath of office! Theft, I can deal with, OATH BREAKING, I can't.

#10 KBE,
Aww man, that dream of yours really moved me. Gave me goose bumps, in fact. It played in my head like a happy ending.
Like you said...
"And we knew the worst was over, and there was hope"
Yes! There is, actually, hope.
(though I still feel very much disbelieving, like a kid with the blankets still over her head)
