I see this recess appointment as a major misstep by Bush. Bolton has been seriously compromised by recent revelations that he may be involved in Treasongate and that he may have lied to the Senate. For Bush, under such circumstances, to bypass the advise and consent duties and priveleges of the Senate is nearly a naked act of tyranny. I don't think the American people will let this slide.
Bush forgets that his credibility with the people of this country has been steadily slipping. Or perhaps its not that he forgets, it's more that he's getting desperate.
Either way, appointing Bolton is a tellingly dictatorial act.

I think it's time for the Dems to take off the gloves. This Bolton appointment shows how meaningful Bush's supposed commitment to consent and advice really is. What's next, a recess appointment of Roberts, the guy who makes crazily anti-constitutional arguments that give government the right to run elections in ways that disenfranchise people as long as no one admits to that intent and give the President jurisdiction over the rights of every human being on the planet?
As far as I can see, at this point, the Pubs don't even have arguments anymore. They've got a lot of hubris and a lot of hot air. As long as the Dems keep the points coming, the Pubs will punch themselves out with the Nation looking on.

Phil #1&2 - The UN should be able to take down this big-mouthed idiot...it should actually be fun to watch him stick his foot in his mouth every time he opens it (providing no one gets killed, of course).
Bob #6 - Yes, Bush will continue to do as he wants - the middle finger/thumb to everyone...

I'm hearing interesting and colorful bantering about "this cannot stand" or "there will be consequences" or "the American people will not allow . . ."
Small problem. Here we are. Nothing has happened about 9-11, DSM, [and long laundry list]. I'm not persuaded that this event is going to be the "guarantee catalyst" that will justify reform.
He's done "something else." What's changed; and what's the "new catalyst" that's going to say, "Hay, this is really different and this time we need to do something about it." This is a big yawn in comparison to the 9-11, DSM [pick your scandal].
Beyond wishful thinking, why should we believe that anything is going to change?
I'm looking for something specific that will demonstrate, "things are going to be different, and we're really going to do something." Here's more on why i'm not convinced there will be any consequences on the Bolton appointment.

Finally, George Bush appointed Bolton to the U.N. (It is being done during a recess of Congress, so who knows how serious the appointment is, but hey...) So far, what we know about Bolton is that he has attacked the U.N. in his rhetoric and that he is a poor boss with a bad temper. Yet, there is a glut of attacks on him. I personally think the U.N. is has become a completely hollow institution with little chance of surviving. Hopefully, someone like Bolton, who we already know doesn't like the U.N., will change things.
I think most people believe the U.N. to be some benign organization we helped to create in the '40s in the interest of promoting peace. The U.N. is a complete joke. Many nations in the U.N. believe the United States to be an "evil empire" out to conquer the world, so they don't much care for our interests or policies. The Security Council consists of the U.S., Great Britain, Russia, China, and France. (One Communist country now trying to compete with us economically, one former Communist country that cannot control its own people and is again showing signs of being yet another ultra-authoritarian state intent on keeping whatever power it used to have, one semi-socialist country which does not like us and believes the U.S. to be vacuous and determined to control the Earth, and one ex-empire holding on to what little power they have left in the world.) I think we should treat the U.N. with some caution and try not to allow their agenda(s) overwhelm ours.
I still hear from people all the time that when we started on this disastrous journey in Iraq it was because we did not pay attention to the U.N. Regardless of what you think about the war in Iraq, don't be fooled. The U.N. is not trustworthy. Don't forget that France had lucrative oil-deals with Saddam Hussein. Don't forget that many of the people in positions of "power" in the U.N. are complete jokes and corrupt. And don't forget, our government is not here to placate other nations. I should hope that we want a president who puts the U.S. agenda first and foremost. Then, we can worry about other nations. Hopefully, Bolton is cut of the same cloth that George Bush is when it comes to diplomacy.

Hi, Daniel #18 - I think you are approaching this subject from the wrong direction; but you are certainly entitled to your own view.
However, you state: "Don't forget that many of the people in positions of "power" in the U.N. are complete jokes and corrupt." This describes the Bush Administration and the neo-con republicans in the U.S.
You state: "Hopefully, Bolton is cut of the same cloth that George Bush is when it comes to diplomacy." Bush is not diplomatic; he is an obvious and continuous liar. Bolton is not diplomatic; he's a fool and therefore dangerous when given any position under Bush...so neither is diplomatic.
Whatever the deficiencies of the U.N., given the multiple crimes and transgressions of this U.S. administration, let's hope the U.N. can pull together enough decency and strength to stop yet another attack by the U.S., this time nuclear, on the innocents of another country...the U.N. did not do enough to stop the illegal attack on the Iraqi people...but at the time they did seem to be trying...

Just recently, reports have implicated Bolton as being possibly involved in the Plame outing. That is a serious matter, easily reason enough to at least delay appointing Bolton. In addition, he apparently lied to the Senate. That not only increases the reason to believe that he has something to hide re. the outing of Plame and therefore increases the reason not to appoint him, but in addition, the lying in itself is probably suffcient reason not to appoint him.
The issues relating to bullying employees are not just that he is a bad boss. What is far more important is that he seems to have done this bullying towards the end of suppressing evidence relating to what supposedly was the most important issue of our time, wmd. Indeed, he apparently sought not only to suppress evidence, but to suppress bearers of evidence, which is arguably worse. If he did so, it also makes his possible involvement in the Plame outing more plausible.
In addition, Bolton's apparent history of bullying and intemperate behavior raises very serious questions about his suitedness to the role of embassador.
In addition, Bolton's history of savage criticism of the Un raises very serious questions as to why the hell he would even want to be posted at the UN.
In general, the Bolton appointment is just one more example of Bush attempting to, in this case quite literally, bully the international community, not to mention the Senate.
This man is so objectionable that Powell apparently came out against him, Powell who is notably the consummate Republican "team player". I believe he is the only Bush appointment who has inspired any negative Republican votes coming out of committee.
The UN? Certainly, it's not an angelic organization, nor is it a puppet of the US. Certainly it needs reform. But we are not in a position to dictate to it, nor should we. The UN is not an adjunct organization of the Us. Espeicially after the Iraq debacle we are not in a position to boss the UN around. Were we to try, that would probably be a good way to destroy it.
Destroying the UN may well be an intent of the Bush administration. If so, I pray that it will not be a successful intent.

I agree, Phil, we don't need to throw the baby out with the bathwater (ref. to UN.)
Some refresher articles on Bully Bolton:
Bully Bolton Threatens National Security
And to me, the MOST SCARY of ALL ...
PNAC's plan to attack Iraq: John Bolton, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, etc...
n 2000 the PNAC published what now seems an almost prophetic document called "Rebuilding America's Defenses". This document, like much of the material published by the PNAC, was adamant that the United States increase its clout in the global political arena. However, there is a disturbing observation within this document. The document notes, "the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event - like a new Pearl Harbor".
In light of the tragic events of 9/11, this statement would not be so disturbing if the PNAC was a fringe movement without the ability to influence change, but many of the people who actually develop and implement government policy are members. Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, and Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz are members, as well as a significant number of less prominent individuals including Richard Perle, John Bolton, Jeb Bush, Richard Amritage, and Lewis Libby. One can only imagine how much influence the ideology of the PNAC now enjoys within the government of the United States. @@MORE@@

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

THE SECOND COMING
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

The Dems could have done more, and all it needed to be was making a certain point, which would have taken away the Bush spin, among other things.
I saw one the the hearings about Bolton, and the committee chair was asked if Bush would cooperate with getting the documents. The question was re-iterated just to be CRYSTAL CLEAR: The Dems will allow an up or down vote AFTER Bush hands over the documents they want. So once the ball was in Bush's court, why couldn't the Dems keep bringing up the fact that they were waiting on the documents?
In the coverage on TV last night, I watched a good amount of it, they showed Bush saying Dems were obstructionist, but nobody, including any of the Dems on TV, made the point that Bush was withholding documents that likely contained damning information. Why couldn't the Dems also bring up the fact that some of Bolton's information was wrong on his forms? I only read about that on blogs, and never saw a Dem say that on TV. What the fuck?
It's like the Dems just go silent whenever they have the opportunity to make the best argument they have.
I'm increasingly more inclined to register Green. I have no party registration now, but I've been desperately hoping the Dems would be an opposition party. They are fighting a little bit here and there, but mostly they roll over.
At this point, I think the Greens should grow big enough that the Dems have to move significantly in that direction to get the Greens back. If a Dem ever does get the presidency again, it will be one that the voting machine companies pick in the primaries, and he/she will just keep the chair in the oval office warm for the next neocon death merchant.

In the event of another 9/11 style attack on US soil, look for signs that it was our own governments incompotence, look for excuses, and unjustified attacks on another country. Look for evidence to be swallowed and investigations stalled. Look for the evil to reveal itself to us once again. Bush has already almost matched Clinton for recess appointments. Apparently he has 106 and he still has most of his second term to go.
But that's not the point. The point isn't making recess appointments, it's making recess appointments to circumvent the legitimate consent and advice process of the Senate.
As for the UN, I guess the US could leave the UN. Arguably it already has, basically. But I don't see what that would do for either the UN or the US.

President Bush: 106 recess appointments
President Clinton: 140 recess appointments over two terms
The first President Bush made 77 recess appointments over one term
President Reagan made 243 over two terms.
Other recess appointments of note:
_President John F. Kennedy appointed Thurgood Marshall to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in October 1961, getting around opposition from Southern senators. Their resistance had weakened by the following September, and the Senate approved him 54-16.
_President Dwight Eisenhower made three recess appointments to the Supreme Court: Chief Justice Earl Warren (1953) and Associate Justices William Brennan (1956) and Potter Stewart (1958). Each later received Senate confirmation.
_President George Washington appointed John Rutledge of South Carolina as chief justice during a 1795 recess. The Senate rejected the nomination and his appointment expired after he served one term.
John Bolton held a forceful role in the successful 1991 U.S.-led effort to repeal a 16-year-old United Nations resolution equating Zionism with racism.
The United Nations is a corrupt pro-Arab pro-Muslim anti-Jewish anti-Israel anti-American murderers row where dictatorships, genocidal regimes, and rape mongering juntas have far too much pernicious influence. Not to mention the oil-for-food farce and the sick and venal food-for-sex program which infests every single UN mission in existence without exception.

I see the trolls already have the Rush talking points on the John Bolton nomination.
Fine you can have him, no more complaints. I have bigger complaints than John Bolton, like he should have never been nominated in the first place, because Bush is an illegitimate president, elected by the skin of his teeth, by cheating republicans in Ohio.
Thats right trolls, I thought it was stolen then, I still think it was stolen now. Has any new evidence surfaced to support my conclusions?????
Ohhhhhhhhh yeaaaaaaaaaaaaa........
1) The US Count Votes Exit Polls Analysis
2) Clint Curtis Testimony
3) The Diebold Scandal (odd how republicans fight so hard for these machines)
4) The Diebold Ohio, $10000 bribe.
5) Mrs. Noe's attempt on Election 2004 to disrupt counting with 12 partisans.
6) Her relationship with an even bigger slime ball, Tom Noe.
7) Secretary Blackwells incompotence, and refusal to answer questions regarding the Fiasco in Ohio.
8) Blackwells CONFLICT OF INTEREST, serving as a campaign manager for Bush while running the elections.
9) John Conyers book Ohio 2004.
10) there is a whole bunch more proof available and still coming out.
If Bush is not legitimate then no appointments he makes are legitimate. Some day the republicans will make piece with their God, it won't be good.

Bolton's a disaster and is going to embarass and destroy the ass-wanderers of the U.N. The United Nations has enough problems as it is, and Bolton is going to ensure they get moving and wage war with Iran.
That is the only reason Cheney has appointed him....The writing was on the wall, over one month ago. The Democrats know this president was illegitimate, so the very first thing they should do is listen to their constituents and **bring up the documents over and over again, Bolton lied, why was that? Where are the documents?**

You betcha there's a whole lotta vermin infesting the world --- the DARK SIDE of power and corruption.
BUT --- the PNAC RethugliCons who stole the American Presidency in 2000 and again in 2004 are the DARKER SIDE of the DARK SIDE. And John Bolton is from the DARKER SIDE. So, you can't hope to shine LIGHT into a DARK corner by electing one of the VERMIN.
Get it?

TREASONGATE:
July 18th Chicago Subway/Dirksen Federal Courthouse Bomb Plot Involving British MI6 -Part 2:
CTA OFFICIALS DENY CHICAGO POLICE ACCOUNTS
By Citizen Spook, August 2nd, 2005
http://www.citizenspook.blogspot.com
Yesterday, August 1, 2005, official spokespersons from the Chicago Transit Authority's Media Relations department told Citizen Spook that the Chicago Police Department requested the CTA shut down the Red line on July 29th between 12:30 p.m. and 1:40 p.m. to accommodate "police activity", an "underground investigation".
A spokesman for Chicago Police, News Affairs Division, told Citizen Spook the July 29th "police activity" was in response to a "bomb threat", but CTA officials firmly denounced that in two separate interviews conducted just before and just after Citizen Spook spoke to Chicago PD. The CTA spokeswoman stated unequivocally, "There was no bomb threat on July 29th...."

Daniel,
Sir, you are a very foolish young man.
The U.N. as corrupt as it is won't get reformed this way, Bolton will end up looking like an idiot. This man is directly involved with serious investigations related to the CIA, committing treasonous acts by identifying and releasing classified information, and vetoing the direct order of officers.
He is up to his neck in the deep water. This asshole apparently thinks being Iran-Contra grade makes him "wantable". The only place that wants him, is a bottom feedneck in prison. Just the way this administration likes 'em.
After all, Cheney can only get his scenario complete using convicts. PNAC is about the full abuse of power. And their **theater wars** have failed....

Bolton will be just another nail in their proverbial coffin. I hope for the sake of this country, the democrats get into Howard Dean mode and nail these bastards to the wall. Just go attack, attack attack nonstop and clearly indicate our message in specific detail.

Admitting I'm not up on the Zionism discussion, I had to do some research (and I'm certainly not up to speed on this subject,) however, I'm reading this article which supports Peg C.'s comment in #62:
Zionism as a Racist Ideology
I'm sure the subject can be as complicated or simple as desired. I personally prefer Occam's Razor to over-complication. Too bad we can't do that for the Legal Language which has become almost too complicated for Lawyers to understand. (Intentionally, I assume, to allow for lots of loop-holes!) Oops --- sorry --- I digressed.

Comments regarding the Grand Jury....
While there is a Grand Jury in Washington D.C. where most of the case takes place, there is also one in Chicago, since this is the home of special office prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald.
Several people have called regarding the indictment speculations.
Fitzgerald's office did not immediately return calls....I received a message from her aide, saying "no comment at this time"
For those following this story, it appears indictments have been handed down via the Grand Jury. Two chicago reporters, Sckolink and Bloom have confirmed the reports.
This may not be a fluke, ladies and gentelmen...There are reports that someone tried to assassinate members of the prosecution. These reports are well validated....We may be looking at a virtual volcano happening soon.
Dick Cheney indicted, for perjury and obstruction of justice. On the record to Congress, if not under oath before the Jury.

"The UN isn't a Us tool and that is a problem for some people."
I agree ,the "U" stands for "united" and the "N" stands for "nations",from what I can see the UNITED Nations is about as united as the "UNITED States" but the principal of the UN is sound. To many Americans think it's there to do their bidding ,your only 250 million in a world of over 6 billion.Lead by example not by pre-emptive military action and you will have 5.75 billion people listening.Look how the 5.75 billion are starting to avoid buying American product and services around the world ,why is that? Why when my family travels overseas do we get treated poorly until they explain their New Zealanders and not American,at which point its all smiles and "sorry ,how can I help you ,I thought you were Americans."
Think what you like but its happening all around the world and I don't remember any time in history that it has been like this.
Bolton is a bigot, bush is a un-uniter .Don't forget bush is a 1000000 to 1 president thanks to "skull & bones" and kerry is a "false flag" opposition and "skull & bones" will tell him when its his turn to win.
I hope bush wears a condom all the time because what he's doing to America and its people.

**His** aide, I should say his aide said no comment will be made at this time.....
Fitzgerald may have already issued sealed indictments, developing story. Listen to reporter Sckolink blow it wide open...

Reporters say they will issue full retraction if story isn't correct....Prosecutor's office not commenting at this time. (Familiar?)

So when do we launch bunker busting nukes on Iran?
...Peggy said on 8/1/2005 @ 2:42pm PT...
Bejaminn075 #5 - After the Administration/FEMA ensure a nuclear attack on American soil - south of Washington, of course, in early August, so I've heard.
I nearly added sarcastically that Bush would be in Crawford and Cheney would direct the attack from an undisclosed location. Well, it turns out Bush WILL be on vacation in Crawford for one month starting this week...
We can always pray that some patriotic CIA and FBI people will step in and help us with regime change in the U.S.A.

That would be worth waiting for. But I think Rove et. al. would know about it. And they would not be so arrogant as to thumb their noses at congress if they knew. (e.g. appointing Bolton)
I am skeptical but will retract my skepticism if it pans out.

Bolton:
"The United States makes the UN work when it wants it to work, and that is exactly the way it should be, because the only question, the only question for the United States is what is in our national interest. And if you don't like that, I’m sorry, but that is the fact."

GWB's vs. Clinton's recess appointments:
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Clinton never recess appointed a major nomination, like UN Ambassador. That's the difference. Sure, both Bush and Clinton did recess appointments for 100+ minor appointments. Can any Bush-bot find evidence that Clinton did a major appointment by the recess mechanism? Hmmmm?

How is it okay that someone who wants to destroy the U.N. is there to represent Americans? The U.N. is all we have. We need the U.N. and we do not need that maggot Bolton there to screw around with the important work of the U.N.

Ha ha ha, you sorry people, John Bolton is not only receiving approval from the N Y Times and other old media that you love, but he has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize! When did your hero, our first black president Clinton fight for the people of Sudan like Mr Bolton is doing and has since being nominated? When did he uncover the rot within the organization?
You are a plantation where black people cannot escape and are condemned to the lower bracket jobs. It is true that you are "the party of the poor" where the poor are the minorities that you keep uneducated, and you are the rich masters, especially you in Hollywood! How about sharing your millions with the minorities and "working poor" that you say you fight for? Blacks and others are more and more discovering the truth about you.
