In one of the smartest pieces we’ve ever seen on his show, tying so many of the Bush Administration’s unprecedented crimes together in a single bound, Stephen Colbert offers an out for all them, in one fell swoop. His comments come on the heels of the remarkable statement, made by U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey to the American Bar Association in a speech this week, that “not…every violation of the law, is a crime.”
Yes, that’s what he actually said. Here’s what Colbert said in reply last night…

the first time i heard the term “illegal but not criminal” was about 2 years ago in a justice department hearing whr the fbi admitted they had ILLEGALLY used “letters” to wiretap peops with no intention of getting the follow up warrant

They’re both non-sensical, highly offensive, and completely divorced from reality. But I guess from the standpoint of the three-ring nightmare circus that we’re in, they both make perfect sense.
We are deep, deep, deep down the rabbit hole.
But…but…but…everyone knows it’s Diane Feinstein’s fault.
I distinctly recall a bunch of drives and petition efforts urging her not to confirm Mukasey. I know I signed several and I made my phone calls and sent my emails.

Say what?? Who ever said all the evil in the world is due to Nancy Pelosi? Her taking impeachment–the appropriate legal response to crime by elected officials– “off the table” was unconscionable and a slap in the face to every decent American, but no one is blaming her for all the evil in the world. There are plenty of villains.
