It was pretty classic. The crowd reaction shots were great; half of the people were laughing and half were just staring in disbelief. You could tell some of his jokes didn't go over well because they struck too close to home, like the one about DC being a chocolate city with a marshmellow center.

And immediately after the dinner, Dick Cheney called up Stephen Colbert and the guy who invited him to the dinner and asked if they'd like to go bird hunting tomorrow...

OBVIOUSLY Colbert knew EXACTLY how warmly his program would be received, and he delivered it anyway! What a MAN! Complete with flipping off Scalia. Colbert was not making fun; he was in deadly earnest, and it was BEAUTIFUL. He did a better job of representing us than our elected representatives do. Stephen Colbert ROCKS.

Stephen just amazes me. After he pulls a joke on someone, you're not left just laughing. You're left thinking "how did he do that". He really takes intelligence to a new level. John Stewart too.
I haven't seen the video yet because I have dial-up, but I highly doubt Bush understood any of it!

"There's just nothing funny about an endless war based on lies, torture of detainees, illegal spying on Americans, stolen elections, soaring energy prices, widespread corruption in the president's party, loss of world prestige, inadequate response to natural disasters, global warming, or simple ineptitude."
Don't forget a crippling reliance on talking points.
I also don't appreciate how Bush stifled Colbert's dissent by frowning.

Greg:
I just watched Bush's little routine with his impersonator and it received a monstrous amount of laughter and applause compared to the stinging on-the-mark disembowelling that Colbert delivered.
It was disgusting.
5 years of lies and death sitting all around them and they STILL treat this man like a sacred cow.
Colbert slaughtered this sacred cow tonight and STILL the headlines read:
"Bush Skewered Self"
Edward R. Murrow is rolling in his grave today.

The kind of humor Colbert presents says "hey, we know how you think".
To us it is hilarious but with them it does not go over well, because the prez has a drunken, distorted, and psychotic process of cognition.
He who can not laugh at himself can not disbelieve himself, and he who cannot disbelieve himself "can do no wrong".
He who "can do no wrong", does the greatest wrongs.

We can only look forward to the day that wherever Bush goes, he is vilified and spat on. Imagine--he goes into a 7-11, and everyone points at him and mutter imprecations; he goes out to dinner, and the waiter deliberately spills a pitcher of water on him; he walks down the street, and people curse him and all his children to the end of time.
Also, Dredd said:

I was amazed Colbert had the guts to say all the things he said. He was BRILLIANT. I'm not surprised bush gave him the cold shoulder: he HAD to be offended. There was a shot of him when Colbert was speaking & he did not look amused.
What's crazy to me is how bush can get up in front of an audience, as he did last night with the bush-look-alike-guy, and kind of celebrate his famous inadequacies...as if to say
"Hahaha, I can't pronounce simple words like "nuclear" and "peninsula"! Gosh, what a moron I am, huh?! "

Bush did his schtick because the alternative to a bumbling idiot is a right evil bastard--when the dummy routine goes flat, people might actually connect him with the crimes against humanity he has committed.
More interesting, I think, would be the press' reaction to being eviscerated by Colbert, but they're not talking, are they?

I got this off from the Ap. The Bush look alike routine took up the first three paragraphs of the article followed by two paragraphs about the Colbert routine.
Bush Addresses Press Alongside Look-alike
By ELIZABETH WHITE, Associated Press Writer
1 HOUR AGO
WASHINGTON -.....
.....The featured entertainer was Stephen Colbert, whose Comedy Central show "The Colbert Report" often lampoons the Washington establishment.
"I believe that the government that governs best is a government that governs least, and by these standards we have set up a fabulous government in Iraq," Colbert said in a typical zinger.
He also paid mock tribute to Bush as a man who "believes Wednesday what he believed Monday, despite what happened Tuesday."

Gridiron Club satire works when the target is an accomplished person who has a few quirks. A few bi-partisan examples: Ronald Reagan (habit of starting every sentence with "Well,..."), John F. Kennedy (Hahvahd accent, shock of hair), Richard Nixon (arm thrust outward, insincere smile), Winston Churchill (V-sign, cigars). The kidding can focus on the idiosyncrasy without subtracting from the person's stature.
The problem with Bush is that he has no stature, and has never accomplished anything. The reason so many people were shocked is that he somehow became president (we know how, don't we?) and there really isn't any history of such an inept fool in the White House. So Colbert's courageous shtick can't have been satire.
Bush is beyond that. More accurately, short of that.

I did a bunch of these "gridiron roasts" in New Canaan, which skewers one of its prominent citizens every year. All in fun, and the emphasis is on the roastee's personal quirks and/or those of his profession.
The problem comes when you have a target whose personal quirks (clumsy language, substance abuse history, cowboy persona) have become less visible than the reality of his administration. There's just nothing funny about an endless war based on lies, torture of detainees, illegal spying on Americans, stolen elections, soaring energy prices, widespread
corruption in the president's party, loss of world prestige, inadequate response to natural disasters, global warming, or simple ineptitude.
The Bush administration has gone beyond satire. Obviously, there are still those who don't realize it; they should be the next targets, even though it still wouldn't be funny.

For Michael: Does Bush have an idea what Colbert was talking about?
Not really. My take is that he views Colbert as another "liberal." People like Bush (and Cheney, and Rumsfeld, and Fox Network, and Limbaugh and Coulter, and all the trolls here), don't ever hear what liberals say...they just hate liberals. So Bush left in a huff, never imagining that Colbert was making sense, or speaking truth to power, or representing the views of most Americans.
What we all must recognize is that with people like Bush, truth doesn't matter. Legitimacy doesn't matter. They are in power, and power is all that matters to the George Bushes of his world. They make their own reality, and those who oppose them are their enemies. It's as simple as that.

Yeah, that might have been kinda funny with the Clintons.
Thing is, Bush deserves anything he gets. He's consistently insisting that he is above the law. He's a sneaky little weasel signing laws then ignoring them and it's time for all good Americans to tell him (to his face, if possible) get the hell out of our government. Good for Colbert. Hope it's a new trend.

It was fun!! It was shocking, and it was to the point. Maybe not funny, but then, what's going on isn't so funny. Unfortunately for the weasel in the hot seat, it was a little too close to home.
Always good to throw it back to the Clintons though. Sure, had Clinton been roasted and slapped with a few embarrassing comments about Monica, that would have stung. Maybe a better laugh would have been his wiggling and squirming to define the word "is", or denying it publicly over and over again. Or maybe it would have been a good laugh to slap him with how he made all of his constituents look silly vouching for him, only to have him fess up in the end. That would have been a worthwhile part of the event to see.
But dubya had this coming. He's been such a hypocrite since he got in office. He's broken laws far worse than denying a sexual affair to the public. This man has cost thousands of human lives, has spent billions of dollars worthlessly for destruction and corruption, and if you think he didn't need to be slapped upside the face, then you maybe don't get the bigger picture anyway.
He was humiliated, exposed to his lunacy and irony, and this should be the least of his problems in the future. I'm hoping somewhere down the road legal action is taken against this insane man and his administration to hold them accountable for the gross negligence and illegal actions they have taken here and abroad.
Thank God someone was able to slap his face. Only problem is, he probably didn't get it at all.

Ragey Cagey,
I guess I have to say this to every military asshole who didn't study his US history.
Freedom in America has never been protected by the military. A standing army goes against the better judgment of the founders of our democracy, who called such a thing "a mischief". Freedom and liberty is protected by the citizens of America alone. And that is why we stand against the tyranny within our own borders. If we lose freedom at home it won't matter what happens in the rest of the world. So yes, Wake Up America! Wake up and see that the decider has decidered he is above the law. The decider has decidered that he is on a mission from God. The decider has declared that governing (ahem "ruling") would be a lot easier if this were a dictatorship. The decider has decidered that America is too stupid to know the difference if they get a $300 tax refund and a $100 gas rebate. The deciderer might be right. In the case of ol' Ragey Cagey here, the deciderer IS right. The deciderer needs to get his respect the old-fashioned way...he needs to earn it (can't you just picture John Houseman telling Bush that). Nobody owes him even a sliver of respect because he is an impostor. The robes don't make the king, and having a title of president sure as hell doesn't make you a statesman. He's been a fraud his entire adult life.
And finally...FINALLY...some with a rare combination of brains and balls has served the president his own shit on a silver platter.
MMMMmmmMMM, Bush! How DOES your shit taste? Never mind, I already know...we ALL already know because we've been eating it for the last five years.
Ragey Cagey, I'd like to know...when you put on that uniform, what exactly ARE you (or believe you are) fighting for? Cause if it's democracy, or the Constitution, we need to have a little chat. If it's a corporate military state, then keep on. Please tell me you know the difference...

Military officers are not supposed to fit into any ideology. They have many other important tasks at hand. The fact that you mention this shows a lack of knowledge regarding military service.
As for Gen. Shinseki, and any other dissenting general for that matter, they are all big boys who have earned the right to share their opinion. If the administration doesn't choose to take their advice, they can always write a book, as many already have...

For Noesis: If you'll recall, the Clintons invited Don Imus to the White House to host one of these deals. And Imus did exactly as one might have expected; he got personal. It caused a temporary storm, Hillary was furious, and Imus was told he wouldn't be invited back.
So there is a precedent for what Colbert did. I'd argue that he didn't stoop low at all. There were no references to Bush's family, his history of drugs and booze, his bratty daughters, or his dumbness.
Colbert stuck to visible targets like Iraq, the outing of Valerie Plame, and Fox Network's favoritism. Very fair, I'd say.
And long overdue. A year ago, this wouldn't have happened; Karl Rove would have vetoed allowing someone from Comedy Central to preside. But Rove has lost power, praise God.
Half the audience was overjoyed, the other half turned off. Considering how many people at the dinner owe their jobs to the administration, or do business with the government, that's a high percentage of supporters for Colbert. Times, they are a' changin'.

P.S. I assume A LOT of people aren't educated. And they aren't. That doen't make me an elitist prick. That makes me a realist - or, as your side likes to put it "part of the reality-based community."
But don't confuse "not educated" with "stupid". There are educated stupid people (Condi Rice) and there are non-educated smart people (Evo Morales). But those coming from Bob Jones University are both uneducated and stupid. See what I mean? I'm guessing, then, that you fit the "educated and stupid" category.

Perhaps you misunderstood. I did not say generals have any particular ideology. What I did say is that if the generals' opinions do not satisfy the agenda of the neoconservative/PNAC/cheney machine, they are disregarded. This is demonstrably true, whether you care to admit it or not. Thanks for talking down to me, though.
Oh, and you flip flopped.

I'm quite certain the same people who resent Colbert's routine against Bush (because Bush is the president, after all) were delighted when Don Imus raked Bill and Hillary over the coals at the White House.
Depends on whose ox is being gored, right? Oh, and there's one other important difference...Clinton,
for all his faults, won both his elections honestly.

People are taking their comedians seriously and the politicians as a joke

Take 90% of the comments posted above and insert Reagan for Bush. What you are left with is the same left-wing crap that was being said throughout the 80's... Everyone here should vote President Bush out before his second term. Oh wait, he already WON...
As for Stephen Colbert, the part with Scalia and the chocolate city was funny; however, most of his other material stunk. It's not funny when someone takes cheap shots at military generals who have served this country for 25-30 years (i.e. They send kids into battle while hiding behind computers, or whatever his exact words were to put them down because they don't share his views). These men are the reason he gets to disrespect a president in front of the first lady, then hide behind the term satire.
Wake Up, America!

Ragey Cagey says..."I fight so Soul Rebel can call his president an impostor "...
This is the next bunch of horseshit that better stop! The military is NOT fighting for MY freedom in Iraq. BULLSHIT!!! I was free before, during, and will be, after the "war based on lies." I feel most sorry for the families of military troops killed in this war based on lies.
Cut out the BULLSHIT, "we're fighting for your freedom."
Other catch phrases:
"You're unpatriotic, if you're against the war"
"You're helping the terrorists"
"You're with us or against us"
It's all complete BULLSHIT!!!
So, then, all these generals speaking out against Rumsfeld, are upatriotic, against America, and against the troops, and helping the terrorists, right? And the 72% of the military who are now against the war, are against themselves???

So blinded by their righteousness that they think they are doing us some big favor by following lockstep behind this moron and his administration. I wish more military types came equiped with a little more information than the nonsense they've been fed through fox and the lies of politicians.
Do something besides think of yourself as our hero. You are NOT my hero, and most likely no one but yourself. You maybe served your country in the military, but I served my country and millions before you have as well. To be a brainless puppet to the attrocities this jackass has pulled off on the world and here at home is the worst service you could ever give your country. Thank you for being a brainless cog, but please don't elevate yourself to anymore than you that.

Big Dan is absolutely right. Nobody is fighting in Iraq for our right to speak freely at home. We had that right before Bush invaded Iraq, and we'll have it after he leaves office (hopefully very soon).
The people who drew up the Bill of Rights were dead set against foreign entanglements. They can't possibly have meant, "Americans have freedom of speech except wherever the president, who was elected under fraudulent circumstances, decides to invade a sovereign county that wasn't threatening us, and does so under false pretenses."
Not possible. Ragey Cagey is free to fight for whatever cause he deems proper, but he isn't free to bind intelligent people to that cause.

Dear NYTIMES,
How dare you print a substantive article about the two-Bush stunt at the White House Press Corp Dinner, and fail to MENTION the comedic evisceration of our president that followed. The brilliant Stephen Colbert, armed only with his wit, veritably disembowelled George W. Bush, and pecked the eyes out of half a dozen others present, and your paper has nothing to say about it? I wonder how I can believe any of your interpretation of the news after this. It seems Judith Miller has a cohort in Elizabeth Bumiller, leaving out the real story right under her nose.

I record the Chris Mathews show every day because it's the only "news" show that isn't half, missing white people crap, and I sometimes wonder if he's on our side.
Fuck you Chris! You're a snake.
Last night, like every other "news" show, he played a ridiculously long segment of the two Bush's and then just before the show ended, a pundit (learned person) made the obsevation that Stephen just wasn't reading the crowd correctly. Mathews should have barked, "Leave my show, and never come back!" (of course that phrase should have been echoing through radio and television media for the last 20 years). As we ALL know, Colbert knew EXACTLY what he was doing.
The whole theme of the press conference was to show that Bush can laugh at himself and I believe The script for the Helen Thomas segment was penned by the white house. Colbert and Thomas purposefully WRECKED it! Send roses.

This was posted by DUFF on Raw Story:
"Colbert had that shit-bag neocon Bill Kristol on his show the other day and he asked him (after he established to the audience that Kristol's a charter member of 'Project for a New American Century'), "So how's that going for you?" -What? "The new American century, how's that workin' for you?" And what was really funny was not that Kristol stammered for an answer but the look on Colbert's face when he asked him. I swear, there was a gleam in his eye. Just brilliant, absolutely brilliant!"
I forgot to mention this: Colbert is the only TV journalist/pundit/anything, to confront a neo-con about the PNAC, on TV!!!!!!!!!! I forgot to mention this, until I noticed this guy's comment on Raw Story.
Colbert is a genius. Kristol was speechless and stammering for an answer. He was taken totally by surprise, that this was the first comments Colbert said to him, and he said them like a machine-gun, the instant Kristol came out.
I almost pee'd my pants, it was so funny! But, yet serious, because no TV person ever confronted a neo-con on TV with PNAC questions. It takes Comedy Central/Steve Colbert!!!!!!!!!!!

BRAD, you HAVE TO post the clip of Colbert instantly walking over to Kristol, shaking his hand, and going, "So how's that thing going for you, the Project for New American Century???"
It was so funny, because it's the first thing he said, after, oh, about 10 years of EVERYONE on TV avoiding talking about the PNAC, let alone, DIRECTLY to one of their founders!!! Kristol was stammering in shock.

The New York Times ran an article today which covered Colbert. It even mentioned the criticism which they had received for failing to mention Colbert in Elizabeth Bumiller's original article.
That's a major shift, and the blogosphere deserves the credit. Two years ago the Times would have thumbed its editorial nose at any such criticism, especially from bloggers, whom they regard as part of a subculture. Now they're losing readership because of us, and it's hurting them big time. Bush's 33% rating in the polls is a big factor, too.

In those times when "truth" is a common subject in movies and television, I think Colbert just said the truth about what's going on: Bush ignoring global warning, being not so intellectually focus, Bush's harder control on the media (journalist get fired by the news channel when they say something patriotic... and what does patriotic means? patriotic = act the way the president want you to behave)... even though, the control of the media by the American has always been there (as in many countries... it's a lot better than in countries with dictator, but there's still a lot more media control in the united states than in most democratic countries. Also, it is true that the USA is very religious... Consequence: religious leaders influence politic and the president try to get religious leaders' votes... and that's not I would call "separation of the church and the states"!
Here's how it works: journalists report the news... if the government don't like what they hear, they will give indirect penalties to the CEO of the news corporation... then the CEO will have to fire the journalists for being inappropriate. If the news corporation resist, all the other news corporations (who are scared of penalties) will say how unpatriotic that news corporation is and the latter will eventually have to conform to the others.
Watch "V for Vendetta" movie... You'll understand what's happening to USA.
Bush is a "doomsday" politician with high economic (which is good) and military (which can be scary) interest.
So... Start wars = Get votes and get popular = More money for the USA and for his family.
The problem is not being republican... It is being for Bush. Voting conservative doesn't mean WAR. Voting for Bush means to go WAR. Liberals and conservatives might go to war or not for some reason. We should rather link the military orientation to the leaders rather than the political party.
Go see the statistics about Bush's popularity: http://www.washingtonmon...sh_Approval_May_2004.jpg
No comments.
Even though, I think what Colbert say is the cold hard cruel truth... It must be very humiliating for the president to be there watching some insulting person. I empathize with the president in the situation. Colbert is cruel... Humiliating... That's the same technique that was used by the Bush's "concentration camp"! So he's not better than Bush in that way.
Colbert is funny. His show has very high ratings and checks on the internet, people love him and the speech he made (although media hate him now!). People who were attacked by him (including the Washing Post) will say he's not funny.
Final note: Colbert said the cruel truth, but it must been very humiliating for the president and the media people. It was very inappropriate, but at the same time it's a wake up call for the president and the media.
