- Europe heat: Temperature records are shattered in Europe, with Paris hitting all-time mark of 109 degrees (Washington Post):
It’s extremely unusual to break monthly and all-time temperature records by such a large margin, which attests to the intensity of the ongoing heat event. - VIDEO: Climate Change Is Impacting Every Aspect of Modern Life, But the Press Fails to “Connect the Dots” (Democracy Now!)

- Unprecedented Wildfires Are Smothering The Arctic In Smoke (Forbes):
For the past few months now, scientists with Europe's Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) have been keeping an eye on over 100 fires above the Arctic Circle, all pumping particulates and other pollution into the sky..."I think it's fair to say July Arctic Circle #wildfires are now at unprecedented levels," Copernicus senior scientist Mark Parrington said on Twitter Monday. - The Arctic Ocean's Sea Ice Hit Record Low Levels This June (Pacific Standard)
- Europe heat: Temperature records are shattered in Europe, with Paris hitting all-time mark of 109 degrees (Washington Post):
The consequences of this would-be sped-up ice melt in Greenland as well as the Arctic Ocean. It’s possible that it would increase the likelihood that this year will feature a record low in sea ice extent at the end of the melt season in September. Already, ice extent is running at a record low, as Arctic-wide temperatures have reached record highs from May through June. - Ohio ratepayers to bail out unprofitable nuclear and coal power plants:
- Ohio Governor Signs Nuclear and Coal Bailout at Expense of Renewable Energy (Inside Climate News):
Opponents fear the law will send the growing wind and solar industry to neighboring states while Ohio homeowners are stuck boosting old, uneconomical power plants...Opponents were unable to match the political power of FirstEnergy Solutions, the owner of the state's two nuclear plants, and its allies. - Ohio passes controversial nuke subsidy bill by one vote (Utility Dive)
- Lawmakers approve financial rescue for Ohio’s nuclear plants (AP):
Backed mostly by Republicans, the legislation will hand over $150 million a year through 2026 to the plants near Cleveland and Toledo in order to keep them operating. It also will scale back and eventually end requirements that utilities generate more power from wind and solar. Without the cash infusion from customers, FirstEnergy Solutions, which is going through bankruptcy reorganization, warned that the plants would be shut down within two years. - VIDEO: Lawmakers approve electricity bill fees to rescue Ohio’s nuclear plants (WKBN-Youngstown, OH):
To get ratepayers to not revolt and accept the bailout, lawmakers who supported the effort stripped fees from current energy bills — creating a difference using simple math — and called it savings, which they have continued to do ever since...[T]he fees they are stripping away go toward energy efficiency programs that help keep residents’ overall bills low by providing incentives for purchasing more energy-efficient items...If they buy the less efficient machine, they end up paying for it in the end with higher energy use on their electric bill. - EPA drops restrictions on bee-killing pesticide, as USDA ends monitoring:
- EPA to allow use of pesticide considered ‘very highly toxic’ to bees (Washington Post):
Alexandra Dunn, head of the EPA office that oversees pesticides, said the agency was “thrilled” to be able to approve new uses and lift past restrictions on sulfoxaflor, which she called a “highly effective” tool for growers around the country — but which the agency itself considers “very highly toxic” to bees. - EPA expands use of pesticide that can be toxic to bees (CNN)

- More Bad Buzz For Bees: Record Number Of Honeybee Colonies Died Last Winter (NPR):
"There's a huge amount of data [and] research showing pesticides are a significant player in the decline of honeybees and other insect species. And yet there's been so little done to make a change on that front," she says. "The EPA has been incredibly ineffective."
- Icelandic memorial warns future: ‘Only you know if we saved glaciers’ (Guardian UK):
“In the next 200 years, all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path,” the plaque reads, in Icelandic and English. “This monument is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it.” - A glacier is dead. A monument will tell visitors whose fault it was. (Washington Post)

To stabilize global temperature, net carbon dioxide emissions must be reduced to zero. The window of time is rapidly closing to reduce emissions and limit warming to no more than 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit or 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, the goal set in the Paris climate accord. The further we push the climate system beyond historical conditions, the greater the risks of potentially unforeseen and even catastrophic changes to the climate - so every reduction in emissions helps. - The Uninhabitable Earth: When will climate change make earth too hot for humans?
