Propaganda, not pro and con discourse, is the dogma of militarists.
It has to be that way once nation A has decided to destroy nation B.
If this is not so less people from the opposing nation will be killed because some of the soldiers will have differing opinions from other soldiers.
Thus, it is paramount to make them all of one killing mind ... a killing machine that will not waver.
Life is a bit different, because variety of likes, dislikes, colors, tastes, and desires are not only allowed but highly valued.
Hey, that's life and death ... and they probably made the right choice ... in today's view of things.
That is why the president used propaganda techniques when dealing with the military.
I am not sure why he uses the same techniques to talk to the rest of us ... but I do have my opinion as to why he does.

Brad, I think that the bigger story is the REASON why they cancelled the show, not the fact that they didn't add a liberal to the lineup.
Host criticizes military official, military official makes sure host can't talk to military personnel. Seems obvious.

Actually, maybe they were already looking for a reason...

Seems totalitarian.
Support the troops. They're American too.

Brad #4. You said it seems totalitarian, and it certainly is.
However, the military has operations to carry out that must not have anyone involved who is not 100% into doing the operation. There can be no dissent once a decision (order) has been given in most circumstances.
There is a right time and a right way to challenge an order, however, the field of battle is not the right time.
For instance when the soldiers refused an order to take certain vehicles thru a hot area because they were unsafe, they were not severly punished.
However, if that is done on the battle field and fellow soldiers die, it is quite wrong, quite serious, and will bring severe penalties.
Our military, or anyone else's for that matter, is no place for the practice of democracy. In general and in practice it goes like: You get an order from a superior and you follow it. Period.
In a democracy when a "superior" gives an order there are many ways to challenge it, and we can vote the superior out if we don't like it.
No military I know of holds elections to see who is going to be sergeant, captain, general, or anything else.
It can't be mixed with civilian ... Castro wears a military uniform which is a corruption. Government must be civilian and have power over the military.
Otherwise totalitarianism will break loose into the civil realm ... Eisenhower was the first general to become president and say "BEWARE of the military industrial complex".
We did not heed his words to keep the two seperate and to keep the military at bay.
Keep the military and civil governments seperate. They are two different worlds ... same with religion and government ... keep them seperate.

I was in the Navy for 6 years. The military has to have everyone on the same page and function as a unit or they can not be successful. The thing I question is why is Ed Schultz not broadcast and Rush Limbaugh is? Limbaugh is the most un-american, divisive and manipulative talk show host the right wing has. There are many progressives in the military (I was one).I think it's a matter of balance.Either get rid of Rush or add Ed.

Perhaps it would have been better if Mr. Schultz had delayed his comments about the military photo op until AFTER the launching of his show on AFRN.
Remember, Brad, no one has ever accused the military of allowing the 1st Amendment. They, like Bush, seem to be in their own little (insulated) world.
No offense, Jo (Post #7).

Dredd & MrBlueSky - I understand and agree with your general points. Did so before hand. But Jo makes the general point I'd have made in reply.
Yes, the military is not a democracy, and should not be. But neither is it a place for the kind of propaganda and lies that Rush Limbaugh offers to the military on an exclusive basis.
If you're going to carry Rush on AFR, then it's perfectly appropriate to carry Schultz for a different point of view.
The troops deserve the truth. I'll stand by that.

No! GW knows if our Brave soldiers family members actually starts to hear the truth. They will come out in droves, and there goes his war, our boys and girls come home. Remember God Is Watching…
“We the People” are behind you, The United States Constitution says “We The People”, not “Bush family and friends”.

Navy. six years. nurse.Vietnam.
I glue the toy soldiers back together.
Ed is spending his money relocating hurricane victims not buying illegal drugs. You are right it probably doesn't cost much compared to Rush's drug habit.
My husband and brothers were fighting in that war while "El Rusho" sat on his huge ass pimple stateside. His condition was correctable with surgery which he neglected to have. He wanted to be 4f. Ed wasn't in the military, but he doesn't act like he's a big war hero either.
Lets hear your creds?

I agree with Brad and Jo that if Rush L is allowed to broadcast, then so should Ed.
But along with that, if they are going down that path, the troops should be schooled into realizing that they are fighting for the other soldier's right to have her or his differing opinion.
The principle, once again, is America first. Both opposing opinions (Ed v Rush) are free speech protected and if America comes first, then both sides can fight alongside one another for America.
As Jo and Brad point out, if only Rush is allowed then the fight is not for America ... it is a lop-sided propaganda operation where differing views are oppressed.
That would be very wrong.

Face it liberal scum - All your base are belong to Limbaugh. Ed Schultz?? All four of his listeners think he's boring. He couldn't even afford an OTC pill habit much less the rushmeister's.. #7:IF(big if) you actually were in the military you were at a terribly low level and certainly not a Marine. True once it's decided which house will be assaulted, everyone goes to the same place but there is a lot of planning that goes into deciding which one. If you think otherwise you're either lying or pathetically ignorant.

Armed Forces radio is paid for by the taxpayers. It should not be a far-right wing propaganda machine. Ed Schultz was notified by the chief of programming he was starting on the network Oct 17. No one has given the Ed Schultz show a reason for this sudden change of scheduling.
I recommend e-mailing appropriate officals at the DOD to urge them to explain to American taxpayers why Armed Forced Radio cancelled the only progressive voice on AFR. DOD public relations number: 703-428-1200

Progressive talk radio is fairly new here in Sacramento. I just found Air America several months ago. They are currently in transition to a new more powerful radio station and have already left their original station. Due back on the air later this month.
The original station 1240AM used to be conservative talk so it is a pleasant suprise that they now are progressive.
I had never heard Ed Shultz before.
Today I ran out to the store at lunch break. When I got in my car and turned on 1240AM the commentator sounded like Rush. His voice and style of talking etc. sounded just like Rush. But the message was all wrong for Rush. I was confused! Had Rush OD'd and seen the light?
Well when they went to commercial break low and behold I was listening to the Ed Shultz Show!
LOL
