Whether he is doing so intentionally or not, constantly forcing the political discourse to the farthest right makes a small compromise --- or a Scott Walker or a Jeb Bush --- look moderate in comparison. Thus Cruz enables his competitors to point at him and say, "See? At least I'm not THAT crazy."
Take the most extreme conservative position on any issue, move over half a step, call your new position 'centrist'. It may be an accident... or it may be the plan.
