This just in from CTV:

New Orleans rocked by blasts, military move in

New Orleans has been hit by a series of massive explosions --- fires are raging and extra troops have been sent in to help quell the lawlessness.

The scenes of a city rapidly descending into chaos come four days after Hurricane Katrina struck a deadly and devastating blow.

Despair is escalating on the streets as corpses rot on the flooded sidewalks, thousands are stranded without food or water and survivors plead for help.

Adding to the uncertainty was a series of large explosions in the city's railroad district early Friday, possibly from a rail car.

A police officer told CNN that authorities were trying to get a hazardous materials team to the area.

He said he believed "several cars blew up," but it was not known what they were carrying.

There were also reports that the city's riverfront was hit by a series of massive blasts --- believed to have involved a chemical factory. A large cloud of acrid, black smoke is drifting over New Orleans.

As thousands wait to be rescued, Lousiana's Democratic governor issued a "shoot to kill" order in a bid to stem the mounting lawlessness in the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans, which blurs the line between protecting property and saving lives, RAW STORY has found.

300 Arkansas National Guard troops landed in New Orleans --- a city literally raped by water and disorder sown by the failure of U.S. relief forces to assist survivors --- Thursday evening, with the authorization to shoot and kill what Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco described as "hoodlums."

Yikes! Shoot-To-Kill! I ask you, What's wrong with this picture?

As usual in the case of a "natural" disaster, I've seen plenty of ideas lately --- good ideas, bad ideas, ugly ideas --- and one of the best ideas I've seen in a while came to me from MoveOn.org. Here's the message; they said to forward it to anyone who might be able to help, and I'm happy to pass it on:

Hurricane Katrina's toll on communities, homes and lives has devastated the nation. Now victims must face the daunting question of where to go next--and we can help.

Tens of thousands of newly homeless families are being bused to a stadium in Houston, where they may wait for weeks or months. At least 80,000 are competing for area shelters, and countless more are in motels, cars, or wherever they can stay out of the elements. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross are scrambling to find shelter for the displaced.

This morning, we've launched an emergency national housing drive to connect your empty beds with hurricane victims who desperately need a place to wait out the storm. You can post your offer of housing (a spare room, extra bed, even a decent couch) and search for available housing online here.

Housing is most urgently needed within reasonable driving distance (about 300 miles) of the affected areas in the Southeast, especially New Orleans.

Please forward this message to anyone you know in the region who might be able to help.

But no matter where you live, your housing could still make a world of difference to a person or family in need, so please offer what you can.

The process is simple:

* You can sign up to become a host by posting a description of whatever housing you have available, along with contact information. You can change or remove your offer at any time.

* Hurricane victims, local and national relief organizations, friends and relatives can search the site for housing. We'll do everything we can to get your offers where they are needed most. Many shelters actually already have Internet access, but folks without 'net access can still make use of the site through case workers and family members.

* Hurricane victims or relief agencies will contact hosts and together decide if it's a good match and make the necessary travel arrangements. The host's address is not released until a particular match is agreed on.

If hosting doesn't work for you, please consider donating to the Red Cross to help with the enormous tasks of rescue and recovery. You can give online here.

As progressives, we share a core belief that we are all in this together, and today is an important chance to put that idea to work. There are thousands of families who have just lost everything and need a place to stay dry. Let's do what we can to help!

In another RAW STORY exclusive, our good friend Larisa Alexandrovna has some very interesting words from retired U. S. Army Colonel Michael Pheneger, whose credentials seem quite impressive:

Colonel Pheneger is a highly decorated thirty year veteran who has served in various high level military posts throughout his career, including: Commander, U. S. Army Intelligence School, Director of Intelligence, U. S. Special Operations Command; Deputy Director of Intelligence, and has worked with the USSOCOM and USCENTCOM teams providing high level intelligence support.

More importantly, he makes a ton of sense, especially when he says things like:

the problem is the underlying conduct - not the photos.

and

the only way to assign accountability is to conduct a thorough investigation of every aspect of these deplorable episodes.

I've been saying the same sorts of things for how long now? When is Larisa going to interview me??

I'm kidding of course but I can't help it; this is so repulsive, and it has been so blatant, and it has been going on for so long, if I didn't bring some humor to the discussion I could never force myself to write about it at all. No, it isn't funny. It's atrocious and it's outrageous and it's very serious ... and seriously, it's encouraging to see someone with the credentials and experience of Colonel Pheneger, telling it like it is!

So a big BRAD BLOG thank-you to retired U.S. Army Colonel Michael Pheneger and another big thank-you to the very lovely and extremely talented Larisa Alexandrovna.

Psst! As the "front man" for The Whispering Campaign, I get all kinds of stuff via e-mail, including a couple of news summaries compiled by people and/or organizations who have nothing to do with Brad or The BRAD BLOG ... they found The Whispering Campaign as soon as we went public and they offered to send us things and we said "sure" and it comes to me ... I read some of this stuff and scan the rest, usually, if I have time, but I never quite know what to do with it. My first impulse it to share it... but the quantity poses a bit of a problem, because I can hardly even find time to read it, let alone blog about it. I mean there's just all this stuff happening every day. Or every week. As the case may be.

I call it "the blizzard". You can only examine so many snowflakes before you freeze to death standing up. [Apologies to any matsodons in the audience; I agree it was a tasteless joke.] So mostly I just scan this stuff and say "thanks" under my breath, and keep going ... you know how it is: Life in the fast lane, Surely make you lose your mind, mm, Are you with me so far?

... and ... I've been thinking it might be good to find some snippet of one of these newsletters and post it, to see what BRAD BLOG readers think of it ... but what to post? and when? and how to "package" it? and so on ... a lot of questions remained unanswered ... until I saw that somebody with no known connection to The BRAD SHOW or The BRAD BLOG ... someone who, to my knowledge, had never even heard of The BRAD SHOW or The BRAD BLOG... had sent me a news compilation that mentions ... very prominently ... are you way ahead of me here??

American Legion Declares War on Protestors --- Media Next?

The American Legion, which has 2.7 million members, has declared war on antiwar protestors, and the media could be next. Speaking at its national convention in Honolulu, the group's national commander called for an end to all �public protests� and �media events� against the war.

"The American Legion will stand against anyone and any group that would demoralize our troops, or worse, endanger their lives by encouraging terrorists to continue their cowardly attacks against freedom-loving peoples," Thomas Cadmus, national commander, told delegates at the group's national convention in Honolulu.

The delegates voted to use whatever means necessary to "ensure the united backing of the American people to support our troops and the global war on terrorism."

In his speech, Cadmus declared: "It would be tragic if the freedoms our veterans fought so valiantly to protect would be used against their successors today as they battle terrorists bent on our destruction.�

On the contrary, Mr. Cadmus: It would be tragic if the freedoms our veterans fought so valiantly to protect were denied to the citizens whose freedoms were supposedly being protected.

It's a shame that the American Legion leadership doesn't seem to understand any of this ... but we haven't given up hope. Someday they may come to their senses. But at the moment they are still locked into the bullshit they were fed more than thirty years ago:

"We had hoped that the lessons learned from the Vietnam War would be clear to our fellow citizens. Public protests against the war here at home while our young men and women are in harm's way on the other side of the globe only provide aid and comfort to our enemies."

What is clear to this citizen blogger is that Mr. Cadmus has no idea who our real enemies are.

According to Jason Thompson of Capitol Hill Blue, the obscene and abusive (supposedly "former") alcoholic who inhabits the Oval Office has been even more obscene and abusive lately than ever. Enjoy a few excerpts from Thompson's article of August 25th:

�I'm not meeting again with that goddamned bitch,� Bush screamed at aides who suggested he meet again with Cindy Sheehan, the war-protesting mother whose son died in Iraq. �She can go to hell as far as I'm concerned!�

Bush, administration aides confide, frequently explodes into tirades over those who protest the war, calling them �motherfucking traitors.�
...
�Who gives a flying fuck what the polls say,� he screamed at a recent strategy meeting. �I'm the President and I'll do whatever I goddamned please. They don't know shit.�
...
Aides say the President often �flips the bird� to show his displeasure and tells aides who disagree with him to �go to hell� or to �go fuck yourself.�

But don't worry. He's still a compassionate conservative, driven by Christian values. Same as he ever was.

Michael Smith Dissects the 'Intelligence Meltdown' that Led to War against Iraq

Our friends at The RAW STORY have recently posted a very detailed article by British journalist Michael Smith tracing the manipulation of intelligence leading to the false claims on which the war against Iraq was supposedly "justified".

Here's a sample:

The most vociferous advocates of an attack on Iraq were Dick Cheney, the vice-president, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Rumsfeld deputy Paul Wolfowitz. They needed Congressional support and set about obtaining it in an aggressive fashion, insisting that not only did Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction threaten America and its allies but that the dictator was closely linked to al-Qa'eda.

This was a bit of a problem for the CIA, and in particular CIA director George Tenet. The CIA's 2001 annual assessment of 'worldwide threats' had played down any immediate threat from Iraq while the Agency had repeatedly dismissed the ludicrous idea that Saddam was in league with Osama bin Laden, a claim that was also strenuously denied in private by British intelligence officials.

By early 2002, US media reported the CIA had come under intense political pressure to back up the neo-cons' claims on Iraq with Rumsfeld's Pentagon even setting up an office of special plans which looked back through all the previous intelligence, hyping up any reports linking al-Qa'eda with Iraq in order to prove the CIA wrong.

Meanwhile, Dick Cheney took to visiting CIA headquarters in Langley and discussing the threat from Iraq with analysts. According to former CIA officials, the visits created a "chill factor" among those working on Iraq. There was "a kind of radical pressure" throughout 2002 and on into 2003, one said.
