   Judge Linda R. Feinberg ruled April 25 that a technical review of the machines could proceed despite Sequoia’s objections. That is very good indeed.

   Unfortunately, Judge Feinberg seems to have conceded that Sequoia’s trade secret rights take precedence over the public’s right of ballot and ballot box inspection. Judge Feinberg conceded to a “protective order” that safeguards Sequoia’s proprietary secrets from being made public.

   The troubling truth about voting in America today is that a majority of voters across America cast ballots on e-voting systems that run software hidden from public inspection and verification.

   When anomalous results are reported the public is denied the ability to review the ballot and ballot box just because it is constructed of software.

   There is no excuse for any secret methods to be involved in the tabulation of our votes. When voting software is held secret, votes are tallied by unaccountable corporate strangers. The process by which our votes are cast and counted is controlled by unchecked private corporations to an extent that threatens the very foundations of our democracy.

   As Brad wrote in his U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) statement — E-voting systems that run software hidden from public inspection and verification, “fail to offer the simplicity and transparency necessary for the simple task of adding one plus one plus one, in such a way that every American citizen can enjoy confidence that their voting system works, and that every vote has been counted — and counted accurately to each voter’s intent.”

   Chris Kromm Facing South … As we covered yesterday, N.C. residents have reported receiving peculiar automated calls from someone claiming to be “Lamont Williams.” The caller says that a “voter registration packet” is coming in the mail, and the recipient can sign it and mail it back to be registered to vote. No other information is provided….Read more at the link

   The mastermind is Women’s Voices Women Vote, a D.C.-based nonprofit which aims to boost voting among “unmarried women voters.” But they seem to be targeting primarily African American voters, male and female.
   ABC and NewsDay have already picked up on this.

   Time is running out, people with registration problems can still register and vote from now until May 3rd

   Important Election Dates:
   2008 Primary Election May 6th
   Last day to register to vote: Apr. 11
   Absentee Voting: Mar. 17 – Apr. 29
   One Stop Absentee Voting: Apr. 17 – May 3

   Go to the North Carolina State Board of Elections website to check your voter registration. They also have information for new and current voters on how to register, where to vote, and more. Voters without internet access should call their County Boards of Elections to find out if they are registered).

   Remember, if you are not registered, you can still go to an early voting site to both register and vote through May 3rd.
