According to Google Maps, it's about 1,622 miles from Baker, NV (near Great Basin NP) to Crawford, TX.
Google reports that it would be about 1 day and 7 hours or so worth of driving (not including any stops).
Be careful out there on that long drive, Brad! Be safe!

Why must you come around here to support this arrogant government you love so much? Why not admit it? Those you support could give a damn about you. You are a means to an end for them. Bush & Co. exploit and manipulate you!!
I wish Cindy well as she makes the journey home to check in on her mother. She hopes to return. In her absence, it's up to each and every one of us to keep this dialogue and debate going.

Sorry for this being off topic. I couldn’t help myself!!
As reports describing the intelligence gathering of Operation “Able Danger” are slowly disclosed to the public, I am beginning to hear the familiar rumblings from the “Far-Out”---oops,--- I mean the “Far Right”. Apparently FBI intelligence indicated that Mohammed Atta, one of the pilots of the 9/11 tragedy (along with some of his compatriots), were observed in this country prior to the attack on the World Trade Center. They were apparently on a watch-list of individuals who were part of an Al-Qaeda terrorist cell commanded by Osama Bin-Laden. The Department of Toxicity & Spew contends that President Clinton failed to protect our nation by either capturing or killing Osama when he had the opportunity. Nine months into the term of tough-talking, hard-walking, hip-shooting, take no crap, President Bush; The World Trade Center was demolished in suicide attacks.
When terrorists first tried to take down the World Trade Center with a truck bomb in February 1993, there was no outcry or accusation against George Herbert Walker Bush, who had completed his presidency merely six weeks earlier. Nobody sought political advantage by blaming Bush for the intelligence failures that allowed the terrorist perpetrators to conspire undetected for more than 3 years.
But this President and his sniveling media co-conspirators leave out one essential dynamic. This President who talks to a higher power, who takes responsibility for the good and bad (wink), who owns up to problems like a cowboy home on the range (wink-wink), was not interested in investigating the 50 some-odd reports of impending attacks. Nine months of his presidency were already in the books. There were nine months of multiple warnings that went unheeded. There were nine months of failure to address issues that were ‘clear and present’. There were nine months of failure to act on any component of these warnings. There were nine months of failure to pick up where the prior president apparently failed. This was a perfect opportunity for President Bush to show just how “on the ball” he was. Well, he succeeded in showing the world exactly how effective he is at leading a nation. As a fan of analogy, I offer this anecdote to describe one of the boldest attempts to cast off responsibility this side of the Garden of Eden.
Imagine this…A major league pitcher throws 8 innings of shut-out ball. He hands the ball off to the closer who comes into the ninth inning with a 5 – 0 lead. The closer then proceeds to give up 6 runs in the inning and loses the game. As he is walking off the field, the press surrounds him and asks “what happened”. The closer, with an oddly straight face, says: “Blame the starter…he should have finished the game”. If this is the person you want as President: if this is the type of press you want covering world affairs, if this is what makes you a proud partisan, then you’ve gotten exactly what you deserve.
Alan

Funny Paul you seem to bring up Clinton a number of times and try to blame him for hindsight. The problem is that Bush Jr. scrapped every single anti-terrorism plan he was given before 9/11 and didn't care. Orin Hatch in 96 had the same mindset as the entire republican party when he said terrorism was a phony issue. This is why 9/11 happened, because republicans didn't take terrorism seriously

9/11 happened because they needed a new Pearl Harbor to go to war in Iraq. So they let it happen and even helped it along. I think there is a problem when 90 percent of the wtc office furniture and computers (all of them) just are obliterated and mysteriously turn to dust particles due to exploding pancakes.

Paul --- Don't even talk to me about moveon.org. All of us who rally behind Cindy are not using her --- we're furthering HER cause, which happens to be aligned with our own.
What politicians are using Cindy Sheehan to suit their own agenda? Many have apologized to her, including Republican Rep. Walter Jones, for the great loss of her young son for an invasion based on lies.
George W. Bush is no Christian, and if he is your shining example of a Christian, then I think you need to do some serious soul searching. He may attempt to talk like one to rally his core supporters, but his life doesn't reflect the values of Jesus Christ. I'm sorry. How many people did he put to death as governor of Texas? How many innocent women and children did he kill in his despicable "shock and awe" campaign in Iraq? There are other Christians who have disassociated with Bush a long time ago, Paul. Why not you?
If you have to stand for anything, Paul, why not stand for the principles you so passionately profess to believe in rather than a hollow disgrace of a man whose life reflects the opposite? Stand for PEACE. Stand with Cindy, as so many of us around this world do.

Well, unless he's in the top 1% of the most obscenely rich in this country ... he's getting screwed to the wall just like everybody else.
Yesterday, my dad called his buddy & asked him if he'd like to go to the gas station & split a gallon of gas. His friend said ok, but they'd have to stop at the bank first to take out a loan! My husband just paid $50 for a fill-up. A very staunch Republican in my parents' church just blew her top, because she is no longer able to live on her salary after deducting money spent on gas. She finally said she's changing Parties.
People who don't know how to think ahead (or believe in neoCon fairy tales) don't seem to understand that the price of everything is based on transportation costs. I guess they've also forgotten that all plastic materials are made from petroleum.

Kira,
Even FDR said in 1923, somebody asked him why the common folk are voting Republican now
Something to the effect that they (reps) appeal to the persons greedy tendancies when times are good, and it takes a depression to bring them back to the party of the people, when they remember we're all in this together and not busy self-gratifying (greedify-ing)
I guess this has been going on for some time now
But the shit of it is, its the Dem party that builds it up for the middle class, they get cocky, vote Republican,
get knocked down again (cyclic I guess)
My Grandmother said she fell for the shit in the 20's, starved for a few years in the 30's
She brought all of us kids up with the rubbing two pennies together stories (I guess nickels were for the upper middle class)
That is why I'm a lifelong member of the Democratic party, even if they too stray sometimes, they always
eventually come to the aid of "all" the people
I would vote Green, but this is a two party set-up, the nasty bastards want us to split, but I won't

Gas prices are about supply and demand. Oil prices are about supply and demand. We have not built a gas refinery since the 1970s. When one catches on fire, gas prices go up. China, India, and Russia are the reasons why oil is so high due to their growing economies and huge demand for oil. That is all there is to it. Once demand is figured out or when the demand drops, the price will come done again - it's a cycle.

Energy, Oil and Gas - The NeoCon Fleecing of America
[snip] It's funny how the oil companies keep getting busted for price fixing and there's never any permanent way to keep them from looting the public from time to time. Remember there are many ways to pick a pocket. Take the news of the impending closure of a refinery here in California. Funny how our friend Shell Oil finds running a refinery unprofitable during a time when we are being told we cannot get enough oil refined to bring the price down. I suppose the notion of government oversight of the refineries in this "time of war" to ensure the stability of the people's wealth would be unacceptable if it weren't already happening through the looking glass.
And it's very interesting that Bush keeps buying oil for the Strategic Reserve, thus driving prices even higher by increasing demand. So we're closing refineries while needing more oil refined by the demand which is pressured by Bush's insistence on buying more oil from his Republican buddies, who coincidentally are his biggest contributors. Hmmmm...Still sounds like the sound of one hand washing the other. [snip]

This is an excellent article:
Gingrich on any given Sunday
[snip] Last week at a Capitol Hill gathering of GOP staffers, Newt Gingrich lectured that liberals have the advantage in “speed, cleverness and shallowness.” He also noted in casual contradiction - that being a chief advantage of conservatives - that liberals “focus on analysis” to “hide their values.”
So what’s a right winger to do? This was Newt’s suggestion: “Our core pattern should be ‘there is a BIG difference [between left and right] and it is a fact….’ We must then take such key facts to immediately illustrate a large vision; we cannot remain in arguments at the detail level.”
If you’re a conservative, odds are you won’t admit what Newt just admitted. If you’re a liberal, you’ll smile at what Newt just admitted, which is that conservatives cannot successfully debate liberals because the details that underlie most debates tend to support the liberal position, not the conservative. If the details supported Newt’s side, rest assured he would be touting the marvels of the fine point.
.....Conservatives haven’t debated or presented honest, detailed arguments since Ronald Reagan. They have instead demagogued and distorted at will and that, of course, explains their electoral success. In his column yesterday Paul Krugman nicely summarized these familiar GOP tactics: “The campaign for [Social Security] privatization provided an object lesson in how the administration sells its policies: by misrepresenting its goals, lying about the facts and abusing its control of government agencies. These were the same tactics used to sell both tax cuts and the Iraq war.” [snip]

Kurt Vonnegut Speaks Out
This interview is from 2003, but I'd never run across it before.
[snip] Speaking of weather: Mark Twain said some readers complained that there wasn't enough weather in his stories. So he wrote some weather, which they could insert wherever they thought it would help some.
Mark Twain was said to have shed a tear of gratitude and incredulousness when honored for his writing by Oxford University in England. And I should shed a tear, surely, having been asked at the age of 80, and because of what I myself have written, to speak under the auspices of the sacred Mark Twain House here in Hartford.
What other American landmark is as sacred to me as the Mark Twain House? The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Mark Twain and Abraham Lincoln were country boys from Middle America, and both of them made the American people laugh at themselves and appreciate really important, really moral jokes.
I note that construction has stopped of a Mark Twain Museum here in Hartford -behind the carriage house of the Mark Twain House at 351 Farmington Avenue.
Work persons have been sent home from that site because American "conservatives," as they call themselves, on Wall Street and at the head of so many of our corporations, have stolen a major fraction of our private savings, have ruined investors and employees by means of fraud and outright piracy.
Shock and awe.
And now, having installed themselves as our federal government, or taken control of it from outside, they have squandered our public treasury and then some. They have created a public debt of such appalling magnitude that our descendants, for whom we had such high hopes, will come into this world as poor as church mice.
Shock and awe.
What are the conservatives doing with all the money and power that used to belong to all of us? They are telling us to be absolutely terrified, and to run around in circles like chickens with their heads cut off. But they will save us. They are making us take off our shoes at airports. Can anybody here think of a more hilarious practical joke than that one?
Smile, America. You're on Candid Camera. [snip]

Citizens Request Recount in San Diego Mayoral Race:
Diebold's Un-Accu-Vote
Now, a nonpartisan citizens' group that conducted a parallel election has requested a recount of 11 precincts. This time, the issue isn't unmarked bubbles, but the accuracy of Diebold Accu-Vote optical scan voting machines and the Diebold GEMS central tabulator used to count votes.
The Citizens Audit Parallel Election (CAPE) asked voters exiting polls to vote again and sign a log book attesting to the accuracy of their second vote. Sealed parallel election ballots were counted at KGTV's studio with a TV camera crew filming the counting process.
Nearly 50 percent of all voters participated in the parallel election, which included five polling places representing 11 precincts. The sample included more conservative than liberal precincts, with participation as high among Republicans as among Democrats. The tandem election results showed what most feel to be startling results.
"There is a shift of four percent of the vote, consistently," Joe Prizzi, (engineer and physicist,) reported at a press conference held by CAPE in front of City Hall. Frye received 50.2 percent of the votes cast in the parallel election - enough for an outright victory if those results reflect the outcome citywide. CAPE also found that the official count added approximately 2 percent to each of Frye's two Republican opponents, Jerry Sanders and Steve Francis.
In addition, CAPE examined the only other ballot measure, a proposition over a war memorial cross on public land. The proposition's vote total also appeared to have been padded by 4 percent in the official election tally, which was certified Friday August 19 by San Diego County's newly appointed Registrar of Voters, Republican Mikel Haas.
Math is non-partisan
A team of statisticians from California State University- Northridge - have analyzed the data from CAPE, concluding that the probability of luck or chance as the cause of the observed four percent deviation is less than one in 1,300 - or .000678.

Krugman is so close to getting it. He needs a little information on the Tabulators and he'll connect the dots.
What They Did Last Fall
krugman@nytimes.com
NYTimes
By running for the U.S. Senate, Katherine Harris, Florida's former secretary of state, has stirred up some ugly memories. And that's a good thing, because those memories remain relevant. There was at least as much electoral malfeasance in 2004 as there was in 2000, even if it didn't change the outcome. And the next election may be worse.

Kira #58 - this from Josh Marshall at TPM:
I should be getting a copy tomorrow of Dead Wrong --- Inside an Intelligence Meltdown', a documentary CNN has on this Sunday about the Iraq intel failure. But since Sunday is only two days away, I wanted to pass on the following. A friend, whose opinion I put a great deal of stock in, tells me that it's very good. So definitely, if you have a chance, try to catch it Sunday evening.
If I get it in time, I'll post a review tomorrow here on TPM.

It makes it even more suspicious that DU closed that thread.
I was actually the one having the discussion with these people who kept insisting the field was ‘delicate’, that hay was really expensive etc and THEY KICKED ME OFF.
So many people have donated to the Crawford Peace House they have collected $90,000. At the same time Cindy had no van to camp in, was asking for tarps and rope….and the people at the Peace House and on DU are now suggesting people donate money to fix up the park in town.
There has been discussion that they paid off their mortgage, and I know people meant that money for Cindy.
Something is fishy with these people. They seem to want to keep the protest in town, even though there is tons of traffic, trouble with parking etc. It seems like they want a reason for people to keep sending them donations. If we had a big field there would be no reason for anyone to be in town at the Peace House.
I suggest that we pressure them into spending the donations on someone else’s field to park in then. Money talks, and I am sure someone would come foward if they offered to pay.
I read that Food Not Bombs is feeding people at Camp Casey- they might be a better idea for donations.

My personal opinion is that the $90,000 should be used by Cindy for her continuing efforts in bringing attention to this illegal and immoral war. What's all this about paying off mortgages or fixing up parks? NO NO NO!!! That money should go into keeping Cindy in the public eye for as long as it takes.

The camp coordinators say the entertainment is for the benefit of the supporters. The general public is not encouraged to attend any concerts or other entertainment that may occur. Parking would be a major problem if large crowds came for the entertainment, it was noted."

Is this O.T.? Can't tell anymore...
Code Pink is sponsoring the letters-to-laura-bush effort and here's what I'm gonna send her. Hope they don't come & slap the cuffs on me.
Dear Mrs. Bush,
I am, like you, the mother of two grown daughters. They mean the world to me, and I can only imagine the all-consuming grief I would suffer if I lost either of them.
We out here find it difficult to understand why the president has found time for fishing & bike rides but cannot spare half an hour for the mother of a fallen soldier.
I wrote the following in reaction to a recent column by Tom Engelhardt. I include it because I am frankly at a loss as to what more could possibly be said to reach the heart of your husband, which seems so firmly and immovably closed to all pleas.
(here I copied what I had posted on a previous Bradblog thread...kinda long to re-post))
Mrs. Bush, you may deem this disrespectful. It is not meant as such. Yet even so, disrespect is a pale offense against the sheer enormity of grief, pain and death suffered by so many thousands as a result of this war.
We beg you to intercede with the president on behalf of these thousands. Ask him to meet with Mrs. Sheehan. Half an hour is not too much to ask.
Most sincerely,

I suggest you are the one who is, "Blinded with your hate of [the true spirit of America]. Blinded. Consumed. Radicalized. Eaten alive. Lost.
It would serve you well to look into these facts and documents:
The Iraq war was based on lies,
The Downing Street Memos,
The rigged elections of 2000 - 2005,
The failure to heed pre-911 warnings,
Corrupt vote machine companies owned by GOP Operatives,
War profiteering,
Torture as a policy,
The Illegal outing of intelligence officials
The corrupt Iraq election.
You should mull over this (and pray earnestly, if you are a Christian) --
bush led the US into war with Iraq based on a pack of lies. If you don't know that, you can easily find documented evidence on the net.
I would encourage you to get the truth because sending kids to war to be killed for a lie is the worst kind of evil. Stop buying into bush's fear tactics --- stop buying into the evil lies.

Real Power

[snip] My father and I are very much alike because we share a common personality trait that allows our passions to mushroom into anger when provoked. I'll be the first to admit that I do let people "push my buttons." I do. However, I've recently realized that there are people in this world who feed off of people like me and are continually seeking to provoke this response. Some of these bottom feeders even go so far as to turn this perverse activity into a form of sport akin to fishing and they create very lucrative radio or television programs that show-off this type of behavior.
What makes them so good at what they do is that when this tactic is employed by people like me against them, they always turn it around or somehow deflect the blow, probably because they've mastered the technique so well it's almost second nature.
For example let's say that you're an overweight, draft-dodging pill-popper who has questions about your sexuality. How many career choices are there for depraved cowards like yourself? How about a sanctimonious radio program where you can sit atop a self-created throne and hurl down vitriol at often innocent, good-hearted, courageous, do-gooders? Why doesn’t President Bush feel obligated to meet with Cindy Sheehan during his vacation?
Remember this statement by his mother, Barbara Bush, on Good Morning America in March 2003:
"Why should we hear about body bags, and deaths, and how many, what day it’s gonna happen, and how many this or what do you suppose? Oh, I mean, it’s not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"

Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson called for "the biggest demonstration this state has ever seen" to protest President Bush's appearance Monday before a national veterans convention.
"This administration has been disastrous to the country," Anderson said Friday. "If people could organize and speak out in an effective manner from the reddest state in the country, that would garner a lot of attention."
In an e-mail Wednesday to about 10 activist leaders, the maverick mayor of Utah's capital called for a diverse demonstration to greet Bush when he speaks to the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the Salt Palace Convention Center. The mayor plans to join the protesters. [end snip]
Utah Mayor Rocky Anderson
Locally, the Salt Lake Tribune named Anderson “Utahn of the Year” for 2000. In 2001, the Downtown Merchants Association presented the Mayor their “Friend of the Merchant Award.”
For his environmental initiatives, the Sierra Club named Anderson “2002 Utah Political Leader of the Year.” Issues 2002, a non-profit advocacy group that speaks on behalf of the homeless and the economically disadvantaged, also named Anderson “Elected Official of the Year” for 2002.
Based on a survey of readers, Salt Lake City Weekly has named Mayor Anderson “Best Elected Official” each of his three years in office.

All Hat No Cattle
You might be a republican if ...
...You seem to think that there is a "liberal media", yet you conveniently "forget" about the media never or almost never mentioning Bush's failed business deals where he lined his pockets while his investors went broke, or how he had a stadium built in Texas and taxpayers got stuck with the bill, or that Osama Bin Laden's brother was George W. Bush's business partner in the 1970's, or about how Bush has not unsealed his military records, despite promising to do so in May of 2000, and despite the fact that both Al Gore and John McCain unsealed their military records, or about Bush's National Guard commander saying that he never showed up for duty between May of 1972 and October of 1973, or about how Bush's wife committed vehicular manslaughter and killed her ex-boyfriend--there are, of course, many other things as well-but I'd be here for awhile.
