An old boss of Michelle Obama's, Valerie Jarrett, chair of the Chicago Stock Exchange, was among the most powerful black women in Chicago and served as finance chair of Barack Obama's campaign, reports Newsweek.
Valarie Jarret also sits on the board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. link

We are already in a 1984 society and beyond. If we continue to think in terms of "personalities" and the old tried and true, "We want everyone to enjoy the American Dream" we're not doing any good. Better define the American Dream.
Presidents don't run this nation, and it's a diversion to think that they do. (They could be more effective leaders if they were truly "public".) If we haven't learned to lock out anti-democratic forces (corporations and oligarchs) from civic life then we haven't really learned the lessons of the last five decades.
It's up to us, not to Obama or Clinton or Edwards. For example, would we get useful election reform without a citizens' movement? Don't think so.
IMO, the work is on our shoulders (with the help of elected officials - particularly those in Congress) to assert the supremacy of public life over selfish and manipulative economic life. Nothing will get better within little shifting cults of celebrity and games (acknowledged by almost everybody, even those being stroked) of stroking the electorate.
People won't change their natures or understanding in time to save the nation and the principles that mean everything to some of us. That being the case, we have to start thinking like Plato or Montesquieu or Jefferson or Madison (not to mention Sam Adams and Thomas Paine and Gandhi and Cesar Chavez), but with the experience of our times acknowledged. We have to think in terms of structuring the political system to work right and it may require radical surgury and "tough love" from us in light of what we have seen.
Do I think we'll do it? Doubtful. Most people think it should be done for them.
