Tom Tomorrow (real name, Dan Perkins, by the way) of This Modern World was a guest of mine on ThursdayThe Peter B. Collins Show where I was Guest Hosting. (Audio archives posted here.).
After complimenting him on his keen ability to reflect the current zeitgeist well ahead of anyone else, I asked him how he chooses his topic. His answer, paraphrased, whatever he happens to find funny. I asked if he found anything funny about Electronic Voting Machines.
Apparently he did. And, as usual, long before most of us understood the true nature of the threat to democracy posed by these god-awful machines. He pointed me to this Halloween strip originally published on 10/23/03 (notice the name on the computer monitor)…
No wonder he calls himself Tom Tomorrow…

Thanks Tom Tomorrow.
I have to tell you guys, that Diebold machines can be rigged by whoever is corrupt enough, GOP, DEM or other.
In Maryland, it is the GOP party who are fighting Diebold tooth nail and claw.
And sadly, it is the democratic party protecting these defective paperless vote eating machines.
In fact, there is a cartoon about Diebold at this County GOP website here: http://www.rwaac.com/
Thanks Tom Tomorrow, LOVE your strips!
I pulled up to pay my utilities/cable/internet bill the other day and happened to notice the name on the drawer that the teller slid out to me had a big ol’ DIEBOLD stamped on it.
I almost grabbed my check back!
*shudders* Creepy.
Tom Tomorrow has the best strip in America. Move over Charley Brown! Go to his website blog and see the funniest picture you’ll ever see of Tom Delay nailed to the cross and smiling.
Rush Holt (D-NJ) has been trying for 6 years to get Congress to mandate an auditable paper trail if e-voting machines are used. Of course Republicans blocked this move because otherwise how could they be sure they won. (And, yes. he really is a rocket scientist).
"Tom’s" portray al of the man in a suit is also dead on. The American public is completely uninterested in politics, voting or anything which doesn’t directly affect their daily lives.
The problem is that corporate America has really pushed the ordinary working man and woman to the edge of bankruptcy, so they don’t have the time or energy to pay attention to much besides how they’re going to pay their bills.
Yeah, sure the economy is zipping along — for the Rich. But, how many ordinary people are making huge raises every year?
Tom Tomorrow does a great job, despite the weird penguin character, of telling it like it is. Hurrah for Tom. Now if we could just get Joe Today to do the right thing on election day. And, if we could just get Star Congressman to do the right thing in Congress all the time. Hope springs eternal.
Tom Tomorrow hits the nail on the head better than anyone – and in such a cool and inimitable way.
We’re damn lucky that he is chronicling our era. I make a beeline to the news rack at a local coffee house once a week for our local alternate weekly newspaper (Sacramento News & Review) mainly so I can see the latest "This Modern World". Coffee and Tom Tomorrow – the good life at least once a week!
