The MSM doesn't seem to be covering this party very well, so maybe the parade should follow Dubya all over the country until he gets a chance to see it first-hand. News is based on the allmighty dollar. Unfortunately even if its for a worthy cause, the purpose of covering it must bring raitings: aka the dollars or nobody gets paid.

By the time my wife and I completed the full loop of the downtown DC March, we were 300,000 strong. I can't believe how little coverage this incredible event received - they should be ashamed, along with all the Democratic congress people who left town!

Yesterday's demonstration was massive. I sat in Lafayette Square park directly across from the main door of the White House from about 12:30pm - 4:00pm and watched a sea of people march by. Pennsylvania Ave (closed to traffic since 911) in front of the White House is 4 lanes wide. The road was filled for 3 1/2 hours as hundreds of thousands of people marched by.

People were exceptionally well behaved and polite. Many picked up the litter (though not all of it to be sure) and engaged several of those in the massive police/security presence in conversation. Many even had their pictures taken in front of the dozen or so mounted police on the west side of Lafayette Park.

I only witnessed one person throw a mostly empty plastic water bottle towards the White House. He was roundly booed by everyone in the vicinity.

I think an estimate of the numbers in attendance of 200,000 could be conservative.

I expect the media to fuck it up.

The was little pre-coverage and only a few blogs are talking about it post coverage. These guys calling the DLC warm spit is gonna sound fairly hollow now.

I am sickened by the lack of coverage. Just totally heartbroken. I didn't think they'd do it justice, but damn, to ignore it is so wrong.

I used to get up for work every morning and watch about an hour of MSN on TV, while waking up. My new routine, since about a month ago, is to wake up and come login. No shoving products I don't want down my throat, and I get actual news.

While we get the real news online, I worry about all the people who don't have a computer or the internet. They are the ones the MSN is letting down the most. The coporate whores are so tranparent and pathetic.

The percentage of guilt for the MSN, in the demise of this country, grows everyday.

A brief smidge of news on the Rally on MSNBC. They said they're going to get caught on some other news now. Wha happened? Must have gotten a few calls, eh?

I watched the "NBC Nightly News" yesterday (lucky me.) They expanded it to one hour because of the hurricane, which was about the only thing they mentioned. The exception was about 1 sentence about the demo and 1 sentence about the "hundreds" of counter-demonstrators. Also a quick report about Dick Cheney's latest hospital stay. Nothing about the war itself or the Frist scandal or the Rove scandal.

The MSNBC coverage today said, "more than 100,000...", "...Dick Cheney's surgery", "...blah, blah", "... flooding in NO due to poorly designed retaining walls."

I was there. It was very therapeutic to see that such massive and diverse cross section of American sees the Bush administration for what it is and cared enough to travel to DC.

Being the engineer that I am I couldn't resist making a few measurements and estimates. Like measuring the width of the streets along the route and counting the number people that on average occupied an area of a painted cross walk, measuring the areas of the cross walk to get the average density of people in the march. Then timing the length of the parade past the starting point. Then going on Google maps and measuring the length of the march.

By my calculations and measurements there were 245,000 people who marched plus more that didn't.

BTW the MSM estimate of the counter demo was about right. Maybe 200 in one cordoned off area near the end of the march. I saw NONE anywhere else.

Kira and I were there to prove . .once again, no one was there but six or seven of us. I wonder why Bushit was out of town scared.

In all truth, the metro (light rail) that goes down to DC was barely enough room to stand/breathing room only.

It was an amazing and truly AWE some day. I had wished we had been able to find the "meeting places" on time, but we could absolutely not move for the throngs of people and get from point A to point B. The only way to move was with the motion of the crowd.

And Brad, I also truly thought of you and wished you had been there to see what some of your hard work has wrought.

I am further amazed, even as Blacked out as the media is, that there was little if no mention of this. Well, I am glad C-Span at least caputured the video.

I will be making another video of my own, at least through slideshow and any clips I can find on the net.

BTW . . if anyone sees an older man in his 70's, staring down and single handedly blocking a police car from driving, by planting his knees against the bumper as it purposefully drove through the blocked street filled with people,telling the DC cops how he hates fascism and asking if "George sent them." That was my dad.

If anyone hears that story on the net or sees pictures . . .point me to them. I was too amazed and scared to move or get a picture.

We all got to watch first hand. Global warming turning nature against the U.S. We got to watch our neo-cons promptly addressing it all. We would learn of offers of help from around the world being turned down. Had they said yes, Canada and Cuba would have been in New Orleans in less then two hours, five days ahead of FEMA. We would learn of them turning away truck loads of fresh water and a hospital ship being told to leave. We, along with FEMA would witness bodies piling up as the days passed. They were the bodies of poor people though who had no quick means to escape the city. Most of them were Black and most of them vote Democratic.

Much of America was asking why was emergency assistance taking so long. We got to watch our President playing a fiddle and our Secretary of State shopping for expensive shoes. We would not get to see our Vice President who was on vacation, but on the phone with his oil companies and HB. We got to watch so much on our TVs.

For reasons that he would not understand, the president's ratings dropped quite rapidly. He would need to get Rove to write him a speech and to order some extra voting machines. He would need to appear Innocent and sympathetic. He would need to personally fly low over New Orleans and land to commend FEMA on their role in this disaster. National Guard companies would be instructed to appear with him for photo ops. At some point they would need to tell FEMA to proceed with some kind of a rescue attempt. They would need to start allowing fresh water to be brought in, and we would get to watch it happening. We may not comprehend it all but we did get to see it.

I think you have your facts wrong. The hospital ship was never turned away. Yes, the beds were empty but that was because the medics were flown into staging areas. Food and water was attempted to be brought into New Orleans but the democratic state officials refused to allow them in. Their thinking was if food and water was provided to those in the convention center and the Super Bowl, the victims wouldn't leave.

The New Orleans Emergency Plan stated that during a hurricane, buses were to be used to evacuate the poor. See, they had the means to leave... Oh wait.... That's right, the incompetent democratic officials never followed their own plan and never sent the buses to save the poor. They just allowed the buses to sit.

Carrying an American Flag at an anti-war rally? Wouldn't that be a dilema to you guys? What to carry, a sign that states "We support our troops when they shoot their officers" or an American Flag.... decisions, decisions!!!!!

Next time, send a runaway bride to Washington a few days before the march. Then leak word to the media that she may be among the marchers.

If FEMA had been there in the 48 to 60 hours that they had committed to, the local decision to use the Superdome would have turned out to be the best decision. There is no way that even a majority those who couldn't or would evacuate would have gotten on a bus to nowhere. Were would 20,000 bussed people go?

The decision to use the Superdome as a last resort refuge was much more likely to succeed. People could easily get there. If the levees held than they could have gone home in 24 hours. If they didn't they were safe from the flooding and could be evacuated with FEMA help in 60 hours max, but it didn't work out like that. Why? The fault is pretty clear to me.

BTW I was at the DC demo and I saw many many more flags being carried by the 250,000 anti-war demonstrators than I saw among the 200 pro-war idiots.

I have been to a few anti-war rally's with my flag. I have one on my car-right next to my" Bush is not my President" sticker.

I also carried the folded flag from my brothers coffin during the candlelight vigil for Cindy. My sister held her sons flag and my daughter held my sisters husbands flag. I have a picture but I am too computer challenged to post it.

Love all the photos posted here as well as the different reports. One of the people I spoke to who lives in the area and attends rallies regularly in DC and New York estimated the crowd at between 300,000 - 500,000!! I read in one MSM account this morning "over 100,000..." Right.

I found an above-the-crowd vantage point to watch the march and what blew me away the most was how the river of people flowing onto the parade route from 3 directions had no end in sight for almost 3 hours!!

An amazing day to be sure - encouraging and inspiring to know so many of us are on the same page! At LEAST 6 or 7!!

I was directed to this article by Steve Gilliard with the added statement: "we have let the far lefties define the antiwar movement. Steve gilliard has an important discussion of the problem."

After reading Gilliard's piece I understand her point, but being there personally I did not see it that way. The diversity of the crowd was vast and I thought was a perfect representation of "everyman/everywoman" America.

I do agree that the non-coverage by the MSM and the apparently one-sided coverage of C-Span paints a different picture than if one had experienced the event in total, but I wonder if Gilliard's point is valid? Any thoughts on this?

#39-BINGO!!! The Steve Gillard article said what I have been trying to express but lack the words. The Speakers sucked and that was all that was seen on C-SPAN. It was counterproductive. It was painfully awful to watch and in my opinion set our efforts back light-years. If I were on the fence and I watched the C-SPAN footage I would join the other side. It was that bad.

The prosecutor in New Orleans is charging the Nursing Home operators in the drowning death of 24 patients. Why, because in the Nursing Home Emergency Plan it called for them to evacuate everyone in the event of a hurricane and they didn't. Sort of like the mayor of New Orleans didn't.

Jo: Part of the problem with the speakers is they were organized by ANSWER and I don't agree with ANSWER being in charge of everything. If someone else can set up the event besides ANSWER next time, you'll get a much more diverse line of speakers.

Thats what I'm hoping for, we don't need to complicate it all by adding in junk about "get out of palestine and north korea" because it just dilludes the message. But you will NOT have that, unless ANSWER is not paying for or sponsoring the event, with everyone in the country there should be more than enough organizations to pay for the event than just ANSWER itself.

Nuke - I never said that that the feds deserve ALL the blame. Its more complicated than that. That's what I meant when I said you can't see the forest from the trees.

I was outraged at the nursing home operators too. Then I heard they were concerned that if they tried to evacuate patients on such short notice a few would certainly die during the evacuation. Now, they could be trying to cover their asses, but there is probably some truth behind their claim. Its complicated and I hope the truth prevails.

What is not complicated is that it took FEMA 5 to 6 days to get there when they promised to be there in 2 to 2.5 days. Bush, Chertof, and Rice were on vacation. Then when they finally showed up they created more problems than they solved.

Everyone could have done a better job. To be kind, FEMA just plain fucked up. However, its almost easier to believe that they delayed and obstructed on purpose.

BTW Texas didn't do a better job of evacuating the poor. I just heard on MSNBC that over 100,000 poor never made it out. Its a very hard thing to do.
I think Mayor Nagin did the right thing and it would have worked just fine if FEMA had held up their end of the bargain.

Re the DC demo - you would have a hard time telling the difference between the demonstrators and your next door neighbors. It was such a wonderful cross section of America that it even surprised me.

There were two pro-war demonstrators with long hair and scruffy beards carry a sing that said "WE EAT HIPPIES". They were barking like dogs at us. I almost fell on the ground laughing at the hypocrisy.

Doug-If there is a more balanced organization out there willing to sponsor the next protest, let me know, I will contribute to the fund. People talking about communism and palestine don't cut it. Did you catch the group stomping out "brick in the wall"? I had nausea while watching it.

Jen #39 - I completely agree with Steve Gilliard's point of view. I was watching C-SPAN on Saturday and those were my exact thoughts. I thought it was just me! I was very disappointed at their agenda and topics and speakers (at least what they showed).

The crimes commited against us, by this administration, which includes the war in Iraq, should have been the ONLY focus.

Nonetheless, it was very moving for me to know so many of you were there, on our behalf, trying to get the message across. I want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart and tell you how proud I am of you. Thank you so much, you have a lot to be proud of.

My question would be, What anti-war rally?

Explain to me what New Orleans and Palestine and Israel and Ohio and Cuba and Venezuela and North Korea have to do with the war in Iraq? The rally in DC can best be described as an anti-Bush rally; that was the theme, hatred of Bush and that leads to charges of hatred of America.

I was at the 9-24 rally, and there's no way in hell that there were as few as 100,000. I guessed that it was 300,000 before hearing any numbers from anyone else.

There were helicopters buzzing overhead all day. Some of them must have filmed the protest. So far, I have no seen any of that footage, except at one Neocon blog that had a photo from the sky that they tried to use to show how small the protest was. Problem is though, the photo DID show a shit load of people, and I also could not recognize the area. Meaning that the vast oceans of people that I saw with me in the protest stretched to where ever this photo went to. I could not identify the Washington monument or the WH in the photo. Also, the photo didn't contain all the protesters. There were dense masses of people at many edges of the photo.

To use that photo of some distant part of the protest, showing that it's packed with people, and showing that people continue to be densly packed beyond the scope of the photo, pretty much proves we are right to say there could be 300,000 or 500,000 people.

Another thing: 100,000 was just the expected number of protesters, a low-ball estimate of the turnout, if you will, and the confirmation of that was given by a police man who wouldn't go any farther than that. He's just one guy. The number of protesters who showd up exceeded expectations, compared to the Neocon rally that expected 10,000 to 20,000 people but only got 400. In that case, you really look like dumbasses. I mean, you Freepers should have predicted that your Pro-Bush rally would attract 100 people, then you would look good for beating expectations when 300 or 400 show up.
