The AP has carried some of it:
"Supporters of the challenge repeatedly said they had no desire to overturn the election. Many who spoke in favor of the protest even voted against it in hopes of clarifying what they said was the real issue — the need to make the country's voting systems fairer and to prevent fraud.
"Our people are dying all over the world ... to bring democracy to the far corners of the world. Let's fix it here," Boxer said.
But that didn't stop Republicans from casting Democrats as trying to subvert the election results.

Black Box Voting has a very good synopsis and some reasons why we gained some ground today.
The article is on the main page and is entitled "Briefing on today's challenge to the electoral college"

It is called "framing the issue." The Republicans framed it as just a bunch of sore losers who want to replace Bush with Kerry, and whose inability to accept the reality of Bush's win is resulting in a destabilizing us at a time of war. They now have their soundbites and talking points, and you can guarantee that the networks, should they choose to cover this historic event at all, will have talking heads discussing the Republican framing of the issue as if it had legitimacy. Having said that, I am most grateful to the courageous Congresspeople who stood to defy the bullies in power and to speak up for the citizens of this country. We ALL will benefit if this shines a light in the dark places and exposes the need for real reform. Thank you, especially, John Conyers, for your persistence and your excellent Report. May this election be the last discredited one, and may we be able to have confidence in future results, regardless of the winners and losers. We have such a long fight ahead of us! God help us all.

I am not pleased with today's events.
What happened today? Barbara Boxer and members of the Congressional Black Caucus stood up for American democracy. But what of the rest of the Democrats. Ask your senator's office why your senator went through the motions of a debate, only to vote to affirm the Ohio electors. What at least one senator's office is saying is that they did this out of fear that if a Democrat won a presidential election the Bushists would challenge the Democrat's electors.
You see what that means? Elections are just one more tactic in the infantile football game between Bushists and Democrats. It is not fundamental to the system.
We were betrayed today. We were fooled a second time.Yesterday I was a Democrat. Today I am not a Democrat.

Good comparisons Brad!
No one really expected the election to be overturned today, although many had higher expectations over what would transpire. There is always hope for a better day, but it is becoming increasingly clear that we're going to need to start taking a more proactive stand to get things done and turn up the heat!
How about a NATIONAL ELECTION REFORM demand petition that sets out the key provisions "we" want:
1) Constitutional amendment for right to elect the President and right to vote!
2) Standard government owned and supervised electronic/paper ballot machines with a dual independent electronic and paper tabulation system!
3) Adequate standard election procedures and machine distributions that insure short lines and the ability to participate and vote!
4) National rules for recounts and contests!
5) Election officials prevented from also being on political campaigns!
These are just a few examples...I'm sure there are more and it can be structured and worded in the appropriate way! Anyway, if we can create just such an outline of demands and present this to Congress by petition, with a similar blitz of e-mails, phone calls, and letters, at least we gave them an honest opportunity to do something. Their inaction will speak volumes!
Also, as Iraq burns, a US General also said today he needs more troops, 30,000, and that US forces will remain in Iraq now at 150,000 or more for the next 4-5 years! Gee! What happened to all those pie in the sky troop reductions we've heard from the White House & Pentagon?
Sure starting to sound like Vietnam to me! And as I reported last night, with the resistance believed to be now numbering more than 200,000, we may see a military draft after all? Stay tuned!

Chemoelectric "I am not pleased with today's events" either. We are forced to live with it, but we do not have to stop the struggle against it.

Will the Democrats be able to get rid of those damned Republican controlled voting machines?
Will Clint Curtis's story ever go national?
Will Tom Feeney and Tom DeLay 'out' Right Wing Gay Republican David Dreier and confess their love to him?
Stay tuned kids.........

Friends! Don't be dissapointed. Senator Boxer with her move today, laid the foundation to votergate (if I can use that word) scandle. This is the start of our struggle. Now that the Republicans unanimously rejected the contest is a good sign. Honestly I never thought the Democrats would have the 'balls' to take this step. The fact that they showed the strength means the future of United States is still bright.
Now we should pursue this and get to the bottom of it. We need to remain focused and it is a matter of time and effort that fraud will come up. The truth always prevails. We smell Nixonian stuff here.
The is the foundation stone for the Impechment of another United States President has been laid.

Bittersweet. If I were going to stand up in a history-making debate and seriously refute the actions of Blackwell et. al., I sure as hell would have also voted to exclude Ohio's votes. Just a thing I have about following through...
But still, a sweet, sweet victory! History! Bloggers! Media Free!
Well, my next action step is to follow in the footsteps of those who managed to have Staples pull their ads from a right-wing Sinclair news program. Let's build on these successes - the successes of the progressive community. I remember back in my school days there were simply places you went and places you didn't go based on the politics of the place - and it was common knowledge - barely needing mention. I know nothing now! Any clues?

Freebird is right. You must draft the electoral reform legislation yourselves. Do not rely on the elected Repubs. or Dems. They had four years already. Prepare it. Send it to Conyers. He and his staff can have it finalized and acceptable to YOU within months. Then you must get it made into law at local, state and federal levels. How? At each and EVERY election for officials, throughout the U.S., make it the central most important, perhaps only criteria for receiving your vote. Any candidate for office who drags their heels does not get elected. It's work, but it's do-able. And you can do it. America happens to have millions of honest, decent and smart people who can draft this legislation and make this happen without relying on dishonest politicians. But you must do it yourselves and not waste energy pushing others who do not want change or honest, fair elections. Start now and you will be smiling in 2006 and 2008.

But a battle is brewing here in America and it's about time! So we may have to stick around and give them hell while having some fun. Somehow I feel the Republicans have set themselves up for a big fall? Don't know yet, but an economic collapse or a new Vietnam may be their unravelling! I need to try and take a few hours off (hopefully) tonight...I am absolutely exhausted.
But I will have some information to announce soon that I believe many BRAD BLOG readers (frustrated, happy, unhappy, angry, disillusioned or otherwise) will soon be happy with.
Would have occurred several weeks ago, but for one Clint Curtis who threw a wrench in the works, and set us back a bit...
But the Velvet Revolution is coming. Stay tuned for details...Hopefully tomorrow...
And be kind to yourselves and each other until then...

People are being threatened, people's families are being threatened by neo-con thugs, who are "just calling to say that" their agenda items had better not be resisted "or else." Delay's performance this afternoon was the last sick-making straw.
This is so disgustingly, revoltingly, OBVIOUSLY, SLIMILY Mob-like that it's getting hard to breathe air on the same planet with these creatures. Total psychological and intellectual nausea - I'd better go to bed. Maybe read some Tom Clancy for "reassurance"... ;-\

remarks, but no action.
What does this show to the world, that is looking to the USA as a democratic nation?
Elections should be above any doubts.
Elections should be the voice of the people.
Elections should be verifyable, so every voter has a receipt for his or her vote the minute they vote.
Is this to much to ask????

The republican party is the party of JFK from 1963.
I cannot help those of you whose elderly parents still think the Democrats are the party they knew and grew up with. Sometimes people get emotionally attached to ideas that life does not change, but it does. The Democrats today showed what they are: a sour grape, all is wrong with the world, people are bad, its not fair, they cheated, party that no longer represents main stream America.
Come aboard my party. It is the old Democrat party of JFK. Check us out. We are almost universally good, successful, God fearing people that love their children, want a better America, and believe in personal responsibility.
There is so much more to the world than CONSPIRACY THEORISTS running your lives with daily misquotes, misinformation, and outright untruths. We all at times think somebody or something is running the world around us and we are not in control of our lives, but then we grow up (or most of us do anyway)!
Welcome to my party: the GOP party. The American party.

My feeling is that the work begins right now! Yes, I know that it has been going on for some time, but that was all leading up to what took place today. Freebird has it right: the initiative process has to begin. Emails have to flood the country, to the point where (as MoveOn has shown) the continuing existence of this ferment --- NOT stopped by the Congressional put-down of today --- simply cannot be denied.
I already posted, elsewhere, the two messages I have so far sent to Congresspeople on what happened today, but I want to post them here, now, to possibly serve as a model for any who care to pursue their own versions.
Here is what I sent to my own Washington state senator, Patty Murray, who was a real cop-out on this...
"The Patty Murray that I helped to put into office, not so many years ago, would have stood in support of the challenge to the Ohio electors, I am quite sure. Obviously, you are not that same Patty Murray.
"I am therefore informing you that I can no longer support any future efforts at your reelection. This one, in my view, was a Biggie! My faith in 'the system' is ENTIRELY gone. And I say this at age 77, after living long enough to see it deteriorate from the days of Franklin Roosevelt.
"I am ashamed of you. I am ashamed of this country. I am ashamed to be an American."
__
And here is what I sent to Tom DeLay's office:
"I watched your smug speech before the assembled House, at the close of today's hearing on the Ohio elector objection, in which you stressed how important it was to 'come together' after the so-recently divisive election campaign, and I wondered how you could be so dense as not to see that the only POSSIBLE way America will come together again is for the Congress to really go into this voting thing. It is a festering wound that is not going to heal, but only get worse until something is done about it.
"But of course, cynicism may be your prime quality . . . you may have no real concern for the healing of America, for all I know."

Would we be concerned if a hardened criminal called us names? Or woul we shrug it off as sociopathological ranting. We must see clearly what is really going on here. WW2 the Jews were tortured and killed. The war on terror light brown people with oil under their feet. Even Pat Bucchanan while hawking his new book sounded liberal compared to the spectacle on the hou floor today.I am paraphrasing...in the 1800's if France and England sent troops to America saying we don't like the way you treated the Indians and the slaves ...and started war...I expect every man would get out his musket. If some honest, smart Americans, like Rep. John Conyers, would just draft the electoral reform legislation, then the American people can get it passed. When are the next local, state elections in your town or area? Who is running for what position? DO THEY SUPPORT THE ELECTORAL REFORM LEGISLATION? If so, they get your vote. Otherwise, no. The candidate, regardless of political party, who will sign the legislation that YOU approve, gets your vote. You need honest, smart people in office, not people wearing labels. Conyers and others can publish legislation on the internet which YOU want, without arguing with Repubs. year in and year out with no results. Get the documents, get the info for your town and state, and start talking. Go, America! Sorry, I'm repeating myself. Go, America!

Hi, Seattle Dem - My suggestion is that you do NOT wait (futilely) for the neocons to give you anything. But, to ACT (as Conyers did on his own without the Repubs.) by creating the Electoral Reform Legislation yourselves (eliminate the fraudulent software), by working with Conyers who now has the background, the confidence of the people, the ability and his standing in the judiciary committee to simply prepare the documents. Then for you to take the documents to every election in your town, city, state, for every position on the ballot and vote ONLY for the candidate that supports the Electoral Reform Legislation that YOU have approved. The legislation will be passed from the bottom up, by the people, for the people, and the neocons will be forced to do as they are told (nicely) or be removed from office. I am certain it can be done.

Pride goeth before a fall.
Always.
The Republicans have lost it, as far as I can see.
They are unconscious.
They are drunk.
They are not well-spoken. Their needles are stuck in the groove. My attention wanders when they speak.
They are not making any sense.
To me, their weakness is apparent. They can commit low crimes, but it is a matter if time before justice finds them. Their tracks aren't covered.
They are completely deluded when they think they are truly powerful.
Their lack of inspiration and creativity in governance will be their undoing.
Not to worry, kids.
Attorney Jim is our resident clown, at the moment. Good for a few laughs, not gut-splitting ones, but
sometimes entertaining, nonetheless.
The republican lack of creativity is apparent, however.
The Democrats, of course, are weak as well. But you gotta like them, sometimes.
So...we have no leadership. Excellent!
We are on our own. Now we can really get someplace.
In these forums, you might notice the democratic process at work. Everyone is heard.... gets a permanent place. Many are responded to. By choice and inspiration. We are free to dissent, free to use bad language, free to misspell, free to express ideas of lawless action, free to come, free to go, any time day or night, and we police ourselves.... the most important factor, in my opinion.
When the time comes, we will know our strength, and we will be ready to act. The government is a pawn in our game, the politicians... our creation. I predict our current presidential imposter will become extremely unpopular and leave the stage in defeat.
We will lead more wisely.
I like that Joan.."We'll have to build a statue of you(Brad), put it in a nice leafy park. And all sit around typing. No pigeons allowed." It will be a challenge for me, since I failed college-prep typing twice.
My genius artist friend once painted a picture of a pigeon on a park bench with a tattered suitcase and entitled it, "Homeless Pigeon".
Onward we go. The Velvet Revolution. Sounds luxurious.

Hi again, SeattleDem - You will not be trying to change a faulty system, USING the faulty system. Also, the fraud is not taking place everywhere YET. Finally, I believe the majority of Americans including Republicans, do not condone fraudulent and unfair election procedures, or faulty software.
Change the system through doing the work (create the legislation), then follow through by getting the legislation (concerning HOW Americans want their elections conducted) adopted in practice. The reforms, which are procedural, will be agreed to BEFORE each election. The work for change has to start NOW, long before the very next election in your town, city, state.
Start small and work upwards. Find out how things are done in your town (then city, then state); what is wrong (not in line with the protections in the legislation), figure out who your allies and opposition are, outnumber the opposition (can be done since the majority of people want fair elections), electoral reform, then elections where you vote for your allies.
Of course, if you have documents in your hand that have been drafted by professionals, such as Conyers, and approved by millions of Americans such as youself and others in your town, city, state, it makes it makes the case for reform much easier. All that is required is long, loud, persistent effort and refusal to take NO for an answer in this matter which is crucial for American democracy.

I'm watching the CSpan replay late tonite.
It's interesting the second time around ... after happy and sad tears shed earlier today, and some discouragement that the system wasn't fixed in one thunderbolt.
Yet, I'm sincerely struck tonite that I'm watching history unfold.
A small almost unnoticeable Constitutional detail included by the Forefathers intended as one of those amazing checks and balances against tyranny ...
rarely, rarely invoked ...
(try a google search to try and find history under "electoral challenge" and Constitution or "electoral objection" and Constitution ... I get, at best, 20 hits. Please feel free to advise and educate me otherwise.)
At this time ... with this war ... with this president ... with this political machine ... with their promises of bettering the entire world by aggressively enforcing our "democracy" ...
A very few, mostly Blacks, courageously make a huge statement.
Ignored by most of the world.
For now anyway.
Good rest y'all.

I was at my mother's knee during the Civil Rights Movement, when she took me to all the Congress of Racial Equality meetings. I know what a struggle it was to get One Man/One Vote institutionalized. To see all that effort, suffering, and then joy, wiped out in a few years is almost unbearable for me. I can't even imagine what it must be like for the African-American.

New task to channel our energies:
We now need to call each and every *Republican* Representative and Senator and urge electoral reform. We did a good job of getting the attention of the Democrats. In the process, I discovered that it's easy to contact our elected officials. I had never done it before. I feel inspired to systematically call every other single Representative and Senator on the voting reform issue. They also need to hear our voices and read our letters.

Statement about Staples media buying and Sinclair Broadcast Group
FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 6, 2005--To clarify that Staples does not have a policy against advertising on Sinclair Broadcast Group news, Staples has the following statement:
Our media buying process with Sinclair Broadcast Group stations has recently been misrepresented by an organization with no affiliation to Staples. Staples regularly drops and adds specific programs from our media buying schedule, as we evaluate and adjust how to best reach our customers. We do not let political agendas drive our media buying decisions.
Staples does not support any political party. We advertise with a variety of media outlets, but do not necessarily share the same views of these organizations or what they report. As we have done for a number of years, Staples will continue to advertise on Sinclair Broadcast Group stations.

Christians, Arrested for Protesting Homosexual Street Fair, Now Acquitted
"Hate Crime" charges against four Christian men, facing a total of 47 years in prison, were dropped after the judge viewed the tape of the incident.
Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005 Posted: 2:18:59PM EST
Four Christian men were charged with “hate crime” felony when in fact they were peacefully protesting a homosexual street event on October 10, 2004 in Philadelphia. Concerned Women for America (CWA) urged the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to intervene. The four adult defendants, who face a total of 47 years in prison if convicted of the three felonies and five misdemeanors, pled not guilty.
“The District Attorney’s office went berserk, saddling them with criminal charges including trying to incite a riot, even though the protesters were peaceful,” said Robert Knight, director of CWA’s Culture & Family Institute. “Their crime was to cite Bible verses, which a prosecutor called ‘hateful,’ and to urge homosexuals, like other sinners, to repent. It’s frightening to see religious persecution on American soil, especially in the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence. The Justice Department needs to step in and investigate this civil rights violation by the city of Philadelphia.”
INTERESTING! THANK GOD THEY WERE ACQUITTED, DON'T YOU AGREE?

The Times gave the event a mention.
Morrigan is right that "they are making themselves obsolete". But obsolete to what?
Probably the details. They are only the conveyor belt for selling goods and services anymore. They are not the carriers of the detail.
"An historic challenge happened today" is about all the coverage so far, without much detail. But there are some exceptions.
Americans still think they have a constitutional right to vote for president. Perhaps it is the educational system that is at fault for this ignorance?
But it is pathetically hilarious for a nation to march around the world violently "bringing democracy" to nations when the concept of democracy-thru-voting at home is just a myth.
The popular vote for president is just pablum to let people feel they have political voting power in a democracy.
Frankly it is a great waste of time and money in the sense that it doesn't matter anyway.
It seems that the resistance the mainstream media put out is resistance to details. They peddle the chaff but throw the wheat into the trash.
Lets get some rest then begin the movement to rid congress of the fascists in two years.

I am all in support of election reform as I stated in my hope for a NATIONAL ELECTION REFORM petition drive. So we make that effort and it falls flat, blocked by the Republicans! Which means in 2006 we'll be voting with the same machines? Maybe?
There is another angle! Contact your local and state election officials/boards and DEMAND the following:
1) New procedures to insure fair and equitable elections in every precinct
2) The use of dual tabulation electronic/paper verifiable voting machines
3) That the voters sign in to vote and then vote electronically
4) The voter gets their own paper receipt to examine
5) The voter also gets to view behind glass an additional paper ballot and pushes a button to confirm the accuracy of the paper ballot viewed
6) The voter than signs out of the voting area certifying that their vote was accurately recorded
7) The electronic ballot and the paper ballots are counted independently of each other at different tabulation centers (Paper ballots counted by HAND!!!!)
8) All election papers, evidence, machines, and so on must be left intact, locked up, for at least six months.
FOLKS!
We need a failsafe election system! Dual tabulation along with exit polling is going to give us that system! DEMAND IT at the local and state level!!!
Finally, we're not finished with that war criminal in the White House! His election is illegitimate just like his dirty mass murdering war! We must not only press for electoral reform, but a new election, his removal from office, his and his co-horts trial for war crimes!
Of course, Republicans are going to protect their Fuherer and their dirty election process. They can only be permitted so much time to deliver justice, and if not, then it is WE THE PEOPLE who must bring JUSTICE to WASHINGTON! A PEOPLE'S CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION, A PEOPLE'S CONSTITUTION, AND A PEOPLE'S NEW FORM OF GOVERNMENT is what they might face if they fail to act!
Waiting until 2006...2008...2010...2012 is not an option. We've waited long enough! We must never tolerate criminals using the law to protect their violation of it! Especially when those criminals run our country! VIVA LA REVOLUCION!

We have been brainwashed into believing buying things will make us happy. It never does though. So I want to stop buying things I do not need, cable just being one such thing. I want to find happiness in other more meaning ways. But our economy now depends on us all being proper consumers and continue to buy, even if we can't afford it. If profits go down, corporations lay off, and more people are unemployed. So by not consuming, are we shooting ourselves in the foot? Any viewpoints?

Hi, Freebird: That's the right picture. Rep. Conyers, with input from everyone who wants change, can draft the legislation. I understand the goal is that the election procedures and voting should be conducted in the same manner everywhere to ensure fairness. So the document you and others provide to your local governments, showing how the people want their elections conducted, should be the same. It will create a ground-swell of change for the uniform voting system. Write to Rep. Conyers and tell him what items the people of America want included in the document for electoral reform. I'm not explaining it well, but probably you understand what I mean.

BLOGGING is one way. I have read a lot of good suggestions here and other sites. So keep the blogging going, keep connected, and like yesterday, start doing things never done before in recent history. And some things that have been done and have worked.
Rosa Parks kinda stuff like NOT ONE DAMN DIME, etc.
Drafting legislation, reading proposed legislation, and of course SECRET TACTICS so the trolls don't lift their legs and piss on us.
Everything!
I have no doubt that when americans realize they have no constitutional right to vote for the president (1/3 of government), they will RAISE HOLY HELL.
WE DO NOT HAVE TO DO IT OURSELVES. The duped voting public is not really dumb. They are doing everything they know to do. They just do not have the details.
Our mission is simply to get it out. And yesterday the trickle began ... there is a leak in the dike ... and when it breaks we will be swept along by the public sentiment and it will be an easy ride.
But it is very, very difficult to get the leak to keep expanding into a torrent.
Both the congress and the president have less than 50% approval rating. That is significant for the president, but not totally unusual for congress.
It was once 80% ... it is heading in our direction. We have momentum. We have heart.

It just seems to me that we should not be too disappointed in the results of the electorate because it was predictable that this would be the outcome regardless of the irregularities. However, we should continue trying to find hard evidence of voter fraud. This is the only thing that would have worked and still will work. That would require people with 'inside' knowledge to narc on others with hard evidence. It happens, but it's rare. So the real question is, how do we all go about finding that?

I read the comments and it is quite clear that many of you don't believe in God anyway. You might believe however, if a miracle happened and Bush was thrown out, like a comment I read. And one said "deity" as if they are not sure what His name is. And all of the Jesus bashing by the kook fringe left on this blog. I have seen the comic strips too!
There is always some election fraud, people try to vote twice in same areas, people vote but because they did not follow instructions, their vote was illegal and thrown out, military votes continue to be disenfranchised, people vote twice in two different states, and of course, there are computer and paper ballot problems. It happens!
Thousands of people make voting mistakes. As long as people are human, no voting system will be perfect. But, Bush won anyway and it is time for you guys to get a life!
I basically have said on earlier blogs that if Kerry won Ohio or Florida by 1 vote and there was a recount and he won by 2 votes, then he won!!! But he didn't win in this case.

Yes, American protestors DID help the enemy kill American Soldiers, just like the left wing is helping kill American soldiers now in Iraq by giving the enemy RESOLVE. Doubt me? Just go to Al Jazeera almost any day of the week and see how they report the left's actions in America!
If the left wing had been around in WW2, we would have been forced to negotiate with Hitler in 1943 because he would have seen the left siding with a "peaceful resolution with honor" to the war amid complaints of reports of "American atrocities to Germans" from the left and and the left complaining of "unfounded reports of German atrocities to Jews" fueling a wrong war at the wrong place at the wrong time!

Those who support unwarranted wars of aggression always try to push the nonsensical idea that somehow the people who oppose the war are guilty of killing their own soldiers. It's just another of the many lies they always tell to try to suppress the opposition; and they need to do this because if they ever told the truth about what they are doing, they''d have been in prison a long time ago.
In Iraq, American soldiers are being killed primarily because they are being bombed by the Iraqi people; secondly because they have been sent into harm's way without the armor necessary to protect them. Nobody on the left is responsible for either of these very sad facts.
Throughout the long history of warfare, the resolve of an occupied people has come from the fact that their country is occupied. If foreign troops were in our cities we'd be bombing them too, regardless of what the press in their country was reporting.
And, by the way, the left wing was around a long time before World War II. Which, as I recall, was started by a bunch of crazy Fascists who started invading foreign countries for no reason except a mad desire to rule the world. Much as the neo-cons are doing today.
It's a shame to see America on the wrong side of yet another needless war. And there's no shame in opposing it.

We should applaud those soldiers who stand up in open public and complain to Rummy while their fellows also protest with applause ... asking when are you going to direct some of that american hard earned money away from the satellite weapons systems you are feverishly building behind the scenes illegally and use it for armour like it was intended.

BTW, I am convinced the demons unleashed in Fallujah are on their way for retribution. It's a matter of a bit of time. We have many allies in unseen places.

And when these entities arrive, the suckers who think they're on the right side are in for an amazing confrontation with the truth. Talk about shock and awe.

My worthy friends,
Thanks for reminding me of another of the oft-repeated lies of the right, that WE don't support the troops. News Flash, jimmo & friends! We on the vilified left seem to be the ones who keep saying WHY DON'T OUR SOLDIERS HAVE ARMOR, NIGHT VISION GOGGLES, AMMUNITION, BULLET-PROOF VESTS?
Take a break from worrying about gay marriage & prayer in school. Wake up & smell the corruption that's eating your party like a cancer.
Let me rephrase what I said earlier to our deafdumb&blind rightie friends: if you have to lie to make your argument, you don't BELIEVE your argument.
Brad, soon as you unveil the Velvet Revolution, I'm there.
God knows, we need SOME goddamn revolution.

I'm delighted my little rant yesterday about the chairperson of the Democratic Party in this part of Ohio caught the ear of one of the best online writers, Bryan Zepp. My god, if you have The New York Times interviewing you, wouldn't it be cool to say something extraordinary and dynamic?
The Washington Generals
Gosh. Will they ever win a game?

The Democratic Party has sold out. It has become the Washington Generals to the GOP's Harlem Globetrotters.
The Democrats know the GOP stole the 2000 election, and they seem to have concluded that if they just agreed to GOP demands to eliminate the paper trail, the GOP wouldn't steal the 2004 election. Idiots.
After a long and determined effort to get one senator, just one, to object to the certification of the electoral college vote based on the wide spread failures and irregularities in the Ohio vote, a total of one – count ‘em, one – Democrat did so. Credit where credit is due: Barbara Boxer has more courage than the rest of the Democrats in the Senate combined, and more character than the whole sorry lot in the Senate, even if you don’t bring down the curve by counting Dick Cheney.
And what sort of rationale do the timid, timorous, weak, sniveling Democrats offer for this display of craven acquiescence? One of my readers, RC in Ohio, quoted his county chair, one Susan Gwinn, who said this to the NY Times: "There was a point where this served a purpose. But I think we passed that. We need to move on."
Move on to what, exactly, Sue? Move on to pretending American elections are still honest? Move on to pretending that there are still two parties in America? Move on to pretending that the constitution and freedom still mean a damned thing?
What, exactly, is she moving on toward?
RC had an idea. We have apparently moved on to the point where the "Will of the People can fall asleep and into corruption, crime, torture and downright evil."
I don’t know about the "Will of the People" but the Democratic Party sure has slid into the role of Pancho Sanchez with nary a wince. One hundred thousand dead in Iraq, including nearly a thousand US troops (at the time), and the Democrats KNOW that Putsch lied about why we went to Iraq, lied about why we’re still there, and is lying about just about everything else under the sun. The man is a pathological liar, supported by a cold and vicious pack of neo-fascists who are contemptuous of Democracy, America, and Americans.
And what was the Democratic Party’s response to this nightmare? The best the Democratic Party could cough up was a worn out old hairball of a Senator who once made his mark opposing a futile and unjust war, but who now lacks the courage to protest an even more futile and unjust war. No wonder he rolled over for the GOP without a whimper.
The Democrats replaced the ineffectual and meek Tom Daschle with an equally ineffectual and meek Harry Reid. The only difference is that Daschle wasn’t prepared to cave in to the religiously insane blob squad and ban abortion. Reid is.
The Democratic Leadership Council wants to maintain a course of being "Republican Lite" which amounts to class warfare against Americans without the race baiting and gay bashing that is the hallmark of the neofascist GOP. That’s like getting to choose between Hitler and Franco. The DLC keeps insisting that the only way to win elections is by pretending to be just like the other guys.
There was an Ipsos-Reid/CNN poll out yesterday. It asked respondents about various elements of Putsch’s policies.
Now, you might expect that a President who supposedly just won reelection to a second term would do fairly well in such a poll, and historically, presidents in such a position usually have pretty good numbers, running from 60% approval on up. In only one category, the war in Iraq and on terror, did the poll give him positive numbers. Sort of. 50% approved, 48% disapproved. That was his BEST return. On the economy, which is supposed to be a strong point for him, he trailed, 51-47. On health care, the environment and education, he trailed by a whopping 13 points.
Does anyone believe for one instant that this widely despised clown really won the election fair and square just two months ago? Sure, the economy has the blind staggers, Putsch is promoting economic policies designed to cheat working people, and Iraq is a hideous clusterfuck. But that was all true back on the day of the election. Nothing has changed.
Yet here’s a poll, from notoriously Putsch-friendly Ipsos, showing him with the lowest approval ratings ever given a president prior to the inauguration.
Are the Democrats screaming about this, or at least pointing out, when the Republicans start babbling about their "mandate to rule," that they are, in fact, widely hated and mistrusted?
Nope. Not a peep.
Granted, some of it is America’s disgraceful mass media. CNN, with a perfectly straight face, claimed that Republicans were "flabbergasted" by the vote by Boxer to have two hours’ debate on the voting in Ohio. As if they were actually really surprised, and had heard nothing of the campaign by people all over the country to get a senator to support house members this time. Maybe CNN didn’t cover the 2000 election. And of course, CNN – and the other networks – carried little or nothing of the debate.
Mustn’t get the American children to wondering if George is really all that popular, you know. Media "access" depends on pleasing their corporate masters.
The Democrats seem determined to become pale shadows of the GOP, and join the Whigs, the Free Soilers, and hundreds of lesser parties as historical footnotes. Already, two major groups – Progressive Democrats of America, and Reform Democrats – have formed, and thousands of people are flocking to these groups, which are prepared to fight back against the neo-fascists of both major parties and their corporate masters. And take America back from those corporations that have so twisted America into a sad parody of itself.
In the meantime, unless there is major reform of the election process, including adoption of the Oregon plan and Clean Campaign reform, don’t expect me to discuss the coming campaigns. I won’t cover them for the same reason I don’t cover pro wrestling matches. It’s why bookies didn’t accept bets on how the Soviet elections would go. American elections will be as much a sham and a farce as the Iraqi elections that Putsch is promoting in the face of all reason and sanity.
Does anyone really CARE what the stats are for any of the players for the Washington Generals?

Hey kook left fringe, your Democratic leaders still failed you the other day! Everything you have predicted, everything you have protested, every conspiracy theory that you have conjured up, has not come true. Every report and conspiracy of voter fraud is not enough to overturn the election but you guys still talk about it as if it is Gospel.
What are you guys going to do when the voting system is 100% perfect and you still get beat by the Republicans? Who are you going to blame then? The American people? The education system? Conservative talk radio? The old mainstream media?
And just as you folks are correct in criticizing the false doctrines of the religious right’s Kingdom Now, Dominion Theology, and Reconstructionism, the liberalism religion of the left is just as dangerous.
You say you want a revolution? If you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao, you ain’t gonna make it with anyone anyhow.
You say you want a revolution? But when you want money for people with minds that hate, all I can tell you is brother you have to wait.
You say you want a revolution? You better free your mind instead.
Don’t you know it’s gonna be alright.

Paul,
Then I guess those left-wing liberal idealists back in 1776 should have just stayed home. Right? Sorry, I take my revolutionary thoughts and suggestions from Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, Henry David Thoreau...not the BEATLES!

A friend of ours sent an e-mail to Deborah Pryce the Republican Congress women from Ohio. “Democrats do have a credible agenda for America, just like Republicans. We do not obstruct, divide and destroy. I think your tactics are baseless and meritless. We should all applaud Stephanie Tubbs Jones and Barbara Boxer. My husband and I attended Georgetown University and lived in D.C. for ten years and have never heard such acrimonious statements as from you, J.D. Hayworth and Bob Ney. Democrats are not full of bitterness and resentment, and the day of the objection was a voice for guaranteeing everybody a chance to vote equally and fairly. It was not a sad day of sour grapes. You offend all moderate thinking people.” And guess what she got in return? A form letter saying that since she was not from Ohio, her opinion meant nothing. Lovely, huh? My wife sent a letter to Kerry saying that she was ashamed she had ever voted for him and that if he couldn’t stand up for fair voting practices whether it benefited him or not, he was not a man only a politician. She, too, got a form letter saying thanks for your concern, I will support fair voting practices, blah, blah, blah.
