I think it was only about two weeks ago when a White House spokesman said Bush's 36% rating was good news, because it meant his support had "bottomed out."
Guess another 7% failed to get that message.

Speaking of polls, I just found this..
"Newsweek Poll: Americans Wary of NSA Spying"
Interesting, considering that lightning-quick poll that claimed 64% of those polled approved of the NSA wiretaps...
"...According to the latest NEWSWEEK poll, 53 percent of Americans think the NSA’s surveillance program “goes too far in invading people’s privacy,” while 41 percent see it as a necessary tool to combat terrorism..."
"...57 percent said that....the Bush-Cheney Administration has “gone too far in expanding presidential power.”..."
Although the article also says that
"...Bush’s approval rating has dropped to.... 35 percent..."
Guess they missed the 29% news.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com.../12771821/site/newsweek/
Again, it appears that the correct question was not asked. They are focusing on the privacy issue. They should ask the question:
"Do you approve or disapprove of the administration BREAKING EXISTING LAW to wiretap American citizens WITHOUT A WARRANT?"

GEORGES PLUMMETING POPULARITY
Bush can manage low poplularity all by himself. However, I think Feingolds recent speech may have had quite a bit to do with it. The recent 29% for George was before their phone gathering scandel hit so can not be attributed to that. The Dems should be thanking Feingold profusely and rallying around the man who is speaking up and improving their fortunes. They should all be doing the same. Choose a man or woman who reufses to mince words and who will not appologise. This is a person of true courage. Courage is a marker of real faith. Feingold so far is the nearest to this.

Joan

I agree Sally. Here's the letter I finally managed to bang out to Nancy Pelosi, for what it's worth:
Dear Ms. Pelosi,
With respect, I will get right to the point, and I fervently hope you will heed this plea from one ordinary citizen who loves her country deeply:
It is my understanding that impeachment was written into our legal system as a valid and essential safeguard. It is not meant to be used frivolously, of course. But it is also my understanding that this process is the only option the law provides to address illegal acts committed by elected officials.
The impeachment of Bush/Cheney et al would be far from frivolous.
The list of egregious harms inflicted upon this country and the world by this documentedly lawless administration is long and unconscionable. Their flouting of the Constitution and their contempt for dissent, for respected scientific opinion, for established checks-and-balances, for this country's and the world's poorest and most vulnerable, and indeed for human life itself is stunning and unpardonable.
Congress is charged with the duty to hold accountable those individuals in the other branches of government who break the law. We, the people, depend on you to do so. To choose not to would be a most grievous dereliction of that duty and an inexplicable abandonment of the proper use of the legal system.
The reasons I've heard given as to why impeachment should not be sought in the event that Democrats regain a majority in one or both Houses of Congress, are flimsy and absurd. One such claim is that impeachment would somehow be "bad for the country".
With all due respect, what is most definitely bad for the country are illegal, warrantless wiretaps,
torture, rendition and secret prisons,
lying the country into war with the wrong target,
war-profiteering and insufficiently arming our troops,
claiming the right to break 750 laws at will,
the outing of a covert agent,
more tax breaks for America's wealthiest and for profit-rich oil companies,
irresponsible debt and a growing deficit,
not to mention being the only developed country without universal healthcare.
Senator, as surely you know, these represent only the tip of a very large iceberg.
I remember the Watergate era very well. The present situation is, in my opinion and in the opinion of countless concerned people far wiser than I, much graver and much more dangerous.
This president has withdrawn from more international treaties than any other president in history. He vowed to restore dignity and honor to the White House. He swore to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States", yet recently he reportedly referred to this document as "just a Goddamned piece of paper". I hesitated to type such offensive words in this message to you; but it is far more shocking that those words came from the lips of the president of the United States.
Democrats appear to be fearful of how a "rush" to embrace impeachment might be perceived; yet in the upcoming elections, who are their opponents? A Republican party drowning in corruption and scandal; a president whose approval rating continues to plummet and who, quite frankly, has a long & disturbing history of saying & doing absurd and inappropriate things.
To paraphrase a line from a recent topical film, "the job practically does itself."
I didn't even mention New Orleans. This episode is for me the most shameful and unforgivable failure of government in our history. People need to go to jail for this. If no one is found to be answerable for this tragedy---the clear consequence of blatant, cavalier cronyism and absolutely shocking incompetence---then our laws mean literally nothing.
As a citizen who genuinely fears for the future of this republic, I implore you to apply the law as it was meant to be applied: to demand that the proper, necessary and terribly deserved punishment be visited upon those who have so brazenly disgraced this country, violated its laws, sullied its hard-won reputation in the world community, and forsaken the principles and values upon which it was founded.
Most sincerely,

Your letter makes a lot of sense. These Guys must pay for what they have done.
Watching Nancy Pelosi I felt that she is too weak for the position she holds. Bring someone like Feingold or better right in there. Its very difficult for a woman to talk about impeaching a male. Men do not like it, they think we have no right. The world is still a very sexist place and the women in congress and many positions find it much harder to stand up all though they often do. If there were 50% women in congress this would probably not be a problem. If the current problems are ever resolved women should work at evening out the numbers. If there had been more of them in the ranks then perhaps things would never have gotten this far.
I don't know its just a theory. A big part of the Republican hidden agenda is to regain ownership of women. The right wing party in my country has the same hidden agenda.

Cheney the Focus of CIA Leak Court Filing
By PETE YOST, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON - In a new court filing, the prosecutor in the CIA leak case revealed that Vice President Dick Cheney made handwritten references to CIA officer Valerie Plame _ albeit not by name _ before her identity was publicly exposed.
The new court filing is the second in little more than a month by Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald mentioning Cheney as being closely focused with his then-chief of staff, I. Lewis Libby, on Bush administration critic Joseph Wilson, who is married to Plame.
With the two court filings, Fitzgerald has pointed to an important role for the vice president in the weeks leading up to the leaking of Plame's identity.
In the latest court filing late Friday, Fitzgerald said he intends to introduce at Libby's trial in January a copy of Wilson's op-ed article in The New York Times "bearing handwritten notations by the vice president." The article was published on July 6, 2003, eight days before Plame's identity was exposed by conservative columnist Bob Novak.
The notations "support the proposition that publication of the Wilson Op Ed acutely focused the attention of the vice president and the defendant _ his chief of staff _ on Mr. Wilson, on the assertions made in the article and on responding to those assertions."
The article containing Cheney's notes "reflects the contemporaneous reaction of the vice president to Mr. Wilson's Op Ed article," the prosecutor said. "This is relevant to establishing some of the facts that were viewed as important by the defendant's immediate superior, including whether Mr. Wilson's wife had 'sent him on a junket,' the filing states.
The reference is to the fact that the CIA sent Wilson on a trip to Africa in 2002 to check out a report that Iraq had made attempts to acquire uranium yellowcake from Niger.
Wilson concluded that it was highly doubtful an agreement to purchase uranium had been made.
The Bush administration used the intelligence on supposed efforts by Iraq to acquire uranium from Africa to bolster its case for going to war.
After the invasion, with the Bush White House under pressure because no weapons of mass destruction had been found in Iraq, Wilson wrote the op ed piece for The Times. In it, he accused the Bush administration of exaggerating prewar intelligence to exaggerate an Iraqi threat from weapons of mass destruction.

Judge of Judges makes a good point. Whether a president is liked or not has little to do with his success in office or his historical standing. Even if Rove is right about Bush's personal popularity, he's still a dufus.
Warren G. Harding was very well liked. U.S. Grant was almost beatified. Franklin Pierce was regarded as likable and well-meaning. They might have been the three lowest-rated presidents (before Bush).
Lincoln and F.D.R. inspired more hate than any other presidents. Andrew Jackson was called every name in the book. Historians rate them in the top five, with Washington and Jefferson.
Rove understands this. He's just trying to keep the right-wing base's spirits up about Bush. His words don't really mean a thing.

I have a comment for Mike J. The thread we were on got all screwed up somehow.
Mike J., you're welcome. Now tell me why Bush's approval rating is so low. If you think he is honestly doing everything for the sake of the country and can be easily seen, why is it that so many have turned away from him? Whenever a serious question comes up the phrase "We're at war!" seems to come up. If we ARE at war, why isn't Bush asking EVERYONE to sacrifice for the effort? Why are the rich getting more tax cuts while the majority get a pittance if anything at all? Why aren't their kids out promoting the world joining together and the desire for peace at the end of all this? My thoughts, from all I've seen and read, is that they WANT war, they want to hide everything they are doing that no one would support, they are hiding their blatant attempt at having all the information at THEIR disposal while keeping the people like you and me in the dark, they are making millions upon millions for themselves and their friends while taking away the economic power of the people and frankly, I'm sick of it. This is all about money and power. Bush is the Manchurian Candidate, his administration is full of like minded neo-cons and they really don't give a shit about anyone else, only their own security and position. If that helps the people against terrorist attacks, it's only a by-product and not their true intentions.
They are counting on the people's indulgence in their own fear of death to keep them in line. Make the connections yourself. You think that all this was the CIAs fault saying that WMDs were in Iraq. Clinton was just as guilty as Bush. Why don't YOU connect the dots and see who is in this administration, what they have done, what they have said, their connections to big oil and money, the deals they've been involved with etc. Do your own 'investigating'. And my increduality stems from you, or anyone, supporting a man who has failed at EVERYTHING he's ever done and think he's qualified in the least to hold the most powerful positon in the WORLD. At least Clinton was obviously intelligent and I have no problems with a president having a strong sexual appetite.
