As pathetically hilarious as this all is, what's even more disturbing is the possibility that John Kerry would close the gap enough after an honest recount in Cuyahoga, to really cast doubt on the entire state. Kerry took Cuyahoga 2-1 even with the apparent fraud that took place, so one cannot help but wonder if, in a county with nearly 700,000 votes "counted" (cough cough), whether that would turn into a 3-1 advantage.
I have to throw this out, even though it is off subject - has anyone else noticed how this entire Dubia ports thing has resulted in massive positive press for Republicans in Congress? There's no way Karl Rove could have manipulated all of this, right?
Right?
Right?

A total of about 300,000 voters were scrubbed from the roles in primarily Democratic counties in Ohio before the election.
No wonder Blackwell doesn't want'em countin' around there.

Re: the 3 indictments, see Kathleen Wynne's significant post with many details of the circumstances. She broke this story on March 8th before it appeared in the media.
Kathleen, who is from this part of Ohio, was videotaping at the recount. This proved to be invaluable. (Hope all BBers are keeping videorecorders with them whenever possible.) She observed various curious aspects of the recount and had the opportunity to speak to many of those involved.
It's noteworthy (smell-worthy?) that the *boss* of these workers has not been indicted--even though he seems to admit that he was aware that votes were being sorted in private before the recount. The implication is that he approved this (or maybe even ordered it). It makes for fascinating reading.

It's already been reported that DPW pulled the deal after consulting with Rove, so its not far fetched to think he may have been brokering the deal from the start. After all, Bush didn't even know about the deal until a few weeks ago. Bush's Brain strikes again!
Also let me throw this out there. Judge Reggie Walton ruled that top-level documents must be handed over to the Libby team. This guy sure has a peculiar problem with matters of national security!

We need more court cases coming to fruition around the country. Proving in court that there has been election fraud is important for educating the general public about what's been happening.
The win in Maryland is great. We need a big snowball effect to wipe out all of the electronic voting system companies.
It would be great to finally get the recount of Ohio, so we can know Kerry really won. That would posit a tremendously difficult constitutional question before the US Supreme Court. After handing the election to Shrub in 2000 could they stomach taking it away now?

Hey guys,
Just a suggestion to be careful about observations about this case and not jump to conclusions.
My concern with this case is that it seems that the prosecuting attorney, Kevin Baxter, has not being conducting a thorough investigation. I say this because sources in Cleveland have told me that all of the election employees have not been subpoeneaed by Mr. Baxter for questioning. And it's been alluded to that there are more facts that have not been made known yet. The possibility of this leaves it questionable whether all the facts have been brought forth in this investigation or not. Without question, this is tantamount to a fair and honest outcome in making certain all responsible are held accountable.
While attending the Certification of the Recount meeting of the Cuyahoga Board of Elections, I witnessed both the Director, Michael Vu, as well as Ms. Maiden, after being asked if the votes had been counted in private prior to the recount that it was both Mr. Vu and Ms. Maiden who admitted that they had. However, interestingly enough, it was Mr. Vu who added, "they did it to facilitate it for the orbservers"...such a statement, in my mind, calls into question how Mr. Vu can continue to claim ignorance of his subordinates' actions if he could say such a thing in the first place. Shouldn't he have expressed shock instead?
I lived in Cleveland during this time and I dealt primarily with Ms. Maiden when dealing with the Cuyahoga BOE. She, in fact, in an interview I participated in, with both her and Ms. Dreamer present, they said they would be following recount procedures that had been followed for years prior to their employment in their respective positions.
To my knowledge, Cuyahoga county had conducted recounts prior to the 2004 General Election and had used these same procedures for those recounts. I find it highly unlikely that no one at the Board of Elections, other than Ms. Maiden, Grier and Dreamer, were aware of what those procedures were. Again, I think this needs to be investigated further to make certain who knew what and when, before condemning these 3 women.
By that I mean, it should be ascertained to what extent both the Director, Michael Vu and Deputy Director, Gwen Dillingham, have a "legal" responsibility to not only know what those procedures are but to oversee strict adherence to those procedures by their subordinates. That's why every board of elections has a Director and Deputy Director. The buck should stop with them ultimately.
More attention should be made to how Mr. Baxter is handling this investigation and the steps he has taken to ensure that no stone is left unturned, even if it leads to the higher ups, Mr. Vu and Ms. Dillingham. We certainly don't need another "dog and pony show" in something of this importance, not to mention, the message it would send to the rest of the country were those truly responsible were to be given a free pass because of an ineffective or possibly biased investigation.
That is his duty as the prosecuting attorney in this case and he should be held to the highest standards possible. These women and the citizens of Cuyahoga County deserve no less, if justice is to be served.

Regarding the viral email claiming to be from Bradblog - I have been receiving it for some time now. Several different viruses have been used. While this can happen from anyone getting a virus and then having it send itself out to their address book entries, what I find interesting is that while I have mailed to and received legit mail from Brad at both my home and work addresses, only my home address has been targeted. That is the address linked to my name here. This would seem to preclude it being Brads computer. Therefore it seems that it may be intentionaly directed at me. The "From" address in these types of mail are almost always spoofed and not the real source, so again I doubt it is from Brad's computer.
As always - run an antivirus and don't open any attachments you are not expecting from someone you know. Even then you can get tricked - I caught the nimda virus years ago from a source I knew and the subject line was about a job we were working on together. That's how smart some of them are.
If you don't have an anti virus get AVG Antivirus Free Version. I run it on all my machines and it works great. It updates daily not weekly like Norton etc. and it's free!

Brad, some spam/viruses can pick up information from a persons existing email in their inbox and generate random addresses and headers based on it, which might explain what many readers here are experiencing. On the other hand, it might be the work of some lowly hacker or worse, a disgruntled diebold executive. You might want to bring it to the attention of the FBI if it goes on.
Laura, yes, Walton has an interesting history. Found a brief summary of it here: http://www.oldamericancentury.org/dave3_039.htm
When Sandra Day O'Conner spoke about dictatorship coming to the U.S., I wonder if she considered how judges like Walton (and Roberts and Alito, as we'll likely find out) figured into the equation.

Thought about that…but do you think Bush would take such a big hit for the Republican Party...knowing about it??? His ego is such that I don't think he would... fearing his legacy?
The question is; Would Rove do it without letting Jr. in on it? I think it was a failure and a backlash by the American People. Something that totally caught them off guard "Unexpected by Republicans.
The Glittering Generalities part is because the Republican controlled media...are in, what you would call Positive Damage Control. That’s the reason they bought up the Media? Exactly for reasons and moments like this! Pumping out supportive propaganda in times of momentary lapses into lucidity by the American Public. Gently rock the public back to sleep with new found concerns for ethics, border security…and above all “Port Security”. Even the Democrats are hoping “Maybe! We will forget about the “Lobbyists”
Republicans Don't Want To "Lose Their Jobs”...so they enlist their recently acquired Media!
Seems to be working pretty well considering the backhand they got from the American People. They all need to be soundly spanked…and have their toys taken away.

Unirealist #18:
Kathleen Dreamer, Rosey Grier are their real names and they are facing real time in jail, if convicted.
It should be of greater concern to everyone whether this investigation is biased in any way, because if we don't pay close attention to this possibility and speak out against such a thing from happening, innocent people could go to jail.
Sorry, but I was there and I know, up close and personal, how corrupt Ohio politics can be and I would never want to see these women take the fall for those who should be held responsible for what happened in that recount mess.
While it may be easy to make fun of or even slam these women because it's one way to release our frustration with how corrupt the whole election system is nationwide, we must resist this temptation and keep in mind what's really important here. It is our responsibility to make certain everything is done to prevent a potential travesty of justice.
That's what the election reform movement is all about.

Is the situation in Ohio our future? Is Ohio the model for a new America?
A republican cabinet level Secretary of Interior, Norton, resigned after photos of her with Abramoff were printed along with emails (link here).
I speculated here on BradBlog some months or a year ago that Justice O'Connor had somehow been compromised. Perhaps thru the spy on America program.
Now retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor indicates we are on the road to dictatorship, criticizing DeLay, and pointing out that republicans are severly damaging America when they damage the Judicial Branch of Government (link here).
We are under a massive frontal attack and I hope we can last until the elections and get relief by throwing out the republican dictatorship.

Brad said "Perhaps he should consider hiring the affable Jack Abramoff to answer the phones for them during this busy season".
Remember the White House procurement officer who was arrested in the White House?
In a court memo in US v DAVID HOSSEIN SAFAVIAN, it states:
"The defendant is charged in a five-count indictment with three counts of making false statements under 18 U.S.C. § 1001, and two counts of obstruction of justice under 18 U.S.C. § 1505. The indictment charges that the defendant served as Chief of Staff for the Administrator of the General Services Administration (”GSA”) from May 16, 2002 to January 2004, and then, from November 2004 to September 2005, as the Administrator of the Office of Federal Procurement Policy, Office of Management and Budget, Executive Office of the President. Indictment at ¶ 1." (link here, PDF).
SAFAVIAN it seems "falsely stated in connection with the investigation that Mr. Abramoff had no business with GSA" (emphasis added).
So if he does use Abramoff to handle the phones, he will not be permitted to lie about it. So that may dissuade Ohio election officials from that tact.

"some lowly hacker or worse, a disgruntled diebold executive."
Don't EVER bring a "hacker" down to the level of an "executive".... and don't EVER think an "executive" has anywhere NEAR the brain power to be a hacker!
You insult hackers and crackers and slackers everywhere!
I can't immagine how people indicted on crimes are allowed to continue working at the place they allegedly commited the crime. If I was -accused- of any malfeasence at work, I'd be suspended at a minimum while they investigated. If found guilty, I'd be fired.. if found innocent, I'd receive the back pay and put back to work (happened to a guy accused of stealing "root password" once).
So, how does one become an "election official"? or work for "the board of elections"? Is that a part-time thing? or a full time job? I mean, I can't quit my day job if this election thing doesn't pan out, but I could certianly take on a "part time job". Not sure about volunteering though.. seems a lot of headache and fighting and potential trouble (snooty folks talking and I lose my real job) to just do for free. Though, if we got enough "decent people" involved and not some upper middle class house wives that think Laura Bush is blessed, we might be ok..

As you pointed out, this was in Cuyahoga County, where Kerry won 2 to 1. This is a county were allegations were made that more voter cast ballots than were registered. Now we find out that recount was handled according to the guidelines approved by the DEMOCRAT Controlled Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office, yet now there are 3 arrest.
What are these Democrats trying hide??? Are Kerry's number really inflated and a recount would have proven this to be true,??? Is that why the Democrats set up a process to make sure it was not recounted??
"The Board operates under the advice and counsel of the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office. The Prosecutor's Office was specifically asked to review the recount procedures consistently utilized by the Board since 1982. The Board was advised to continue operating under the precedent used for more than two decades. Unfortunately, this same process has now resulted in indictments based on alleged procedural defects."

Of course, what no mentions that Cuyahoga County is a Democrat county...now, as I citizen of Cuyahoga County, I know it is. And it is a heavily Democratic county. So, basically, what everyone is saying that a bunch of Democrats were either a) so stupid that they knew of the supposed vote fraud that didn't put there guy in the White House and did nothing to stop it or b) those Democratic officials were the ones who did the vote fraud themselves in an attempt to make it appear that the Republicans cheated. Now, since the officials indicted were all Democrats, wouldn't one logically assume if there was fraud in the first place that they would make sure that Kerry won, and not Bush? I mean it doesn't make sense for the Democrats to charge fraud when they were the ones in charge of the ballots. But, then again, the Democrats no all about stealing elections when the stole the 1960 elections (the FBI overheard the Mob saying that they did steal them) and the 2000 elections when Democratic lawyers tried to suppress the military vote. Besides isn't just this another attempt to deflect attention away from the fact that Democrats just don't have anything worth voting for in the first place?
