Voter ID and Fraud: Prove It
[snip] The Century Foundation's Working Group on State Implementation of Election Reform just released a report called Balancing Access and Integrity that makes a number of innovative recommendations for the states to follow in order to comply effectively and fairly with the Help American Vote Act of 2004 in upcoming federal elections. While states are likely to be receptive to many of the suggestions the group makes, in one area the working group is definitely swimming against the tide: the report flatly states that there is no reason for states to go beyond HAVA's narrow provisions regarding the presentation of identification in order to vote.
Since the passage of that act many states have, in the name of fighting "fraud," plunged forward to enact stricter and stricter identification requirements for voting. Some 20 states now require all voters to present identification in order to cast a ballot—sometimes even mandating that it be a government issued photo identification. Yet the scholars of elections and election law involved in this group unanimously state that there is simply very scant evidence that such measures do anything to combat fraud. While the potential disenfranchising impacts of such requirements also need further study, the report points out that there is some anecdotal evidence that identification requirements serve to disenfranchise major segments of the voting population.
Since the publication of the report, some real data has started to materialize that supports these arguments.
For example, after practically every lawyer in the state scoured the land for fraudulent votes in Washington State because of the election litigation surrounding the gubernatorial race, only six cases of alleged double voting were found.
Similarly, in Ohio—perhaps the only other state to be subjected to the same level of scrutiny as Washington—a statewide survey found that of the 9,078,728 votes cast in Ohio's 2002 and 2004 general elections, a total of four were deemed as ineligible or "fraudulent" and found by the board of elections and county prosecutors to be legally actionable. [snip]
(ACVR, put that in your pipe and smoke it ... )

B-b-b-but, Winter Patriot ... he's quoting Monty Python!
Regarding the Voting Rights Act of '65
The paranoia over GOP motives is understandable when one considers the past and present history of voting rights abuses.
[snip] Southern Democrats weren't the biggest obstacle to the act's passage. House Republicans were. Then Republican minority leader Gerald Ford proposed four ridiculous provisions to gut the bill.
....With Johnson pounding away and the stench of tear gas still in the air from the Selma attack, Congress relented and dumped the Republican provisions. But that didn't end the fight to protect black voting rights.
Republicans Nixon, Reagan and Bush Sr. carefully crafted and fine-tuned the Republican's Southern strategy. The goal was to win elections by doing and saying as little as possible about black rights while openly and subtly pandering to Southern whites' fears of black political domination. (**Note the FEAR FACTOR --- recognize that?? /kira **)
...Since 1965, the Justice Department has filed more than 1,000 complaints of voting irregularities, almost all of them involving minorities. ... (**Sounds like the ACVR to me ... hmmm? /kira**)
~~~~~~~
From the same article above, these 2 paragraphs have made me stop & think about other ramifications:
Ever since word spread that Congress must re-approve the act, ...dire warnings that the Bush administration and the GOP-controlled Congress will torpedo the legislation and disenfranchise blacks. Many of these predictions and rumors are pure paranoia. Voting rights for African-Americans are guaranteed in perpetuity by the 15th Amendment.
...Bush and Congress can make some serious mischief if they choose to knock out a couple of the act's expiring provisions.
One important provision has nothing to do with blacks. It requires districts with large American Indian, Asian American and Latino populations to provide non-English voting materials.
Another provision requires that certain states, mostly in the South, get prior authorization from the Justice Department or federal courts before making changes in redistricting, district annexation, registration requirements or holding at-large elections.
~~~~
So WATCH to make sure all provisions remain intact!

**News: Matt Taibbi article**
**Democrats in trouble: Can't focus on election fraud while battling their own people in the DLC**
"“Some of the things Blackwell did undoubtedly hurt turnout,” he said. “And turnout traditionally aids the Democrats. Part of the Secretary of State’s job is to get people to vote. I think what we saw with Blackwell was that he never encouraged more people to vote.” I asked him if he thought anyone would ever be able to tie Blackwell’s numerous indiscretions to the Bush campaign. “I doubt it,” he said. “I doubt we’ll ever know.” and
“But I get the sense that even if I’d had all the time in the world with those few Democrats still on the record as being interested in the Ohio story, they wouldn’t have had much to say. The party in general has been so effectively marginalized that its elected officials now seem to be rationing political capital the way men in lifeboats ration rainwater.”
“The aforementioned Conyers, the leader of the congressional effort to reopen Ohio, is in the middle of a desperate struggle to preserve his relevancy on the House judiciary committee, where he is the ranking Democrat. Last week, while attending a committee hearing, I watched as Conyers struggled repeatedly to get blimp-shaped committee chairman F. James Sensenbrenner to recognize him. In the hearing I watched, Conyers and other Democrats (especially our own Jerrold Nadler, who appears to inspire Sensenbrenner’s particular loathing) had to shout out “Mr. Chairman!” four, five, or even six times before Sensenbrenner would open the floor for their remarks. In the current Congress, Democrats have to fight just to force the Republicans to respect normal legislative procedure.”
“Things have gotten so crazy in this Congress, and in this political environment in general, that the Democrats now have to watch their backs 24 hours a day, just to make sure they’re not being cheated out of something.” and
“I bring this up because ideology is increasingly not the defining characteristic of this Republican party. What distinguishes this party is its cheating. In CAFTA, in defiance of House rules, they hold the floor open for as long as it takes to get their vote. They not only do this, they proudly announce that they’re doing this. In the House, they have made a habit out of disallowing Democratic witnesses, shutting off debate, conveniently miscounting votes and committing brazen acts of slander and libel, like this Sensenbrenner business. The party routinely refuses compliance with FOIA requests, as well as requests from the Inspector General and the General Accounting Office. It lied and continues to lie outrageously with regard to the Iraq war. It has convinced the country and even themselves that there is something immensely clever, and even principled, about the way that it lies, cheats and bends laws and rules to get what it wants.”
“In recent years it has been fashionable to compare these current Republicans with the Nazis and other totalitarian monsters. I’ve tended to resist those comparisons, but we’ve reached a point where it’s looking more and more appropriate to describe the neoconservative attitude toward the rule of law as having many things in common with those other revolutionaries. These neocons may not have the authoritarian bent of the German fascists or the Russian communists. They’re far more interested in stealing and deregulating than in controlling, censoring and governing. But it is more and more clear that, like these other notorious movements, they view adherence to rules and to the law as a failure of will and a political weakness.”
“That is why we in the media need to reexamine the 2004 election. If they really did steal it, we can’t just let it slide. Because they’ll do it again. And **forget about the Democrats being able to do anything about it** . They have their own problems.” "
http://www.nypress.com/1...s&columns/taibbi.cfm
The reason the Democrats aren't speaking out vehemently about election fraud, is they have been marginalized and are facing the cheating GOP and DLC constantly.
We have to do this ourselves, with the help of Howard Dean. Its come down to us, the Ohio election must be solved including the 2nd district race. Get the media involved, this has got to be fought on all fronts.

You speak of DU being carried around the globe.
Just this morning on our local public broadcasting radio station out of Nevad City - KVMR- there was an interview and discussion regarding the dust cloud from the Sahara which currently is encroaching on Florida.
I missed the begining and the end since I was commuting at the time, but they were talking about the 10 micron size particals of DU contained in it. The source was from the French nuclear weapons testing years ago.
This stuff is pervasive and enters the cells, shorting out their internal systems causing them to mutate.
Cancer of course is the result.
KVMR is a very progressive station that plays all genre of music from Grateful Dead to Hawian, from Reggae to Classical and everything in between.
www.kvmr.org/ on the web.
They stream live over the net. Unfortunaltly they are small and the stream is mono and not the best quality. But they have been slowly building from 100 watts in the early 80's to 50,000 watts now. Most of the staff including the djs are volunteers. Local bands as well as some national acts frequently drop in and play on the air.

Testimony of Leuren Moret for the International Criminal Tribunal for Afghanistan
Ms. Moret earned her B.S. in Geology at U.C. Davis in 1968, and her M.A. in Near Eastern Studies from U.C. Berkeley in 1978. She has completed all but her dissertation for a PhD. in the Geosciences at U.C. Davis. She has traveled and conducted scientific research in 42 countries.
She wrote a scientific report on depleted uranium for the United Nations subcommission investigating the illegality of depleted uranium munitions. She has been trained on radiation issues by Marion Fulk, a former Manhattan Project Scientist and retired insider at the Livermore Lab who is an expert on radioactive fallout and rainout.
Her investigation of depleted uranium particle size formed under high temperature conditions on the battlefield is a critical depleted uranium issue. The production of particles in very high concentrations and numbers results in the permanent suspension of depleted uranium particulate matter in the atmosphere. This has been ignored, but is a major contributor to adverse health effects caused by DU exposure. [see Letter to Congressman McDermott]

** Something that is interesting **
This comparative analysis shows turnout according to precinct in Clermont County, down the line-
http://www.geocities.com...el/ClermontTurnoutVsVote
Look at the one thing about this, there is no even slope. There is a negative .5% decrease for Hackett, and a .5% increase for Schmidt.....All across the county.
Now, this would be due to either of these explanations:
1) According to turnout, for every 5 or 50 republicans who were going to vote for hackett, they switched their votes to Schmidt or simply voted for Schmidt anyway.
2) According to turnout, for every 5 or 50 republicans who were going to vote for hackett, they had their votes switched to Schmidt. "accidental trouble"
If republican votes were shaved off along the beltway, it would be in the more middle precincts or the big districts. Because these are all GOP republican precinct districts, it is much harder to conclusively verify the level of fraud.
The only way to determine just "how" many were disenfranchised and what Hackett possibly won by, is going through the poll book signatures and matching them to the votes.
This has to be done by everyone,regardless of result. Its called an "audit". The question is, how can we get this done?
Like I said, the number correlation is very interesting to look at.

Brad,
Make sure you talk about this on your show:
CNN is at it again! I watch CNN less and less, only Lou Dobbs, actually. But every time I flick over CNN, there's Ken Timmerman, scaring the American people about Iran. They're doing the same thing they, and the rest of the MSM did before the Iraq War.
FAIR did a study, that concluded that over 90% of MSM stories and guests were pro-Iraq War, even though the country was split on it. And it was split, because of the WMD lies Bush was telling. Now that we all know what Bush at the time knew, it's almost 70-30 AGAINST the Iraq War.
But, leave it to CNN to parade pro-Iran War Ken Timmerman all over the place, unchallenged by any guests with contrary opinions.
The Washington Post just came out with a massive article debunking the White House's claims of Iran's nuclear capability. I didn't see them on CNN, or on with Ken Timmerman, challenging him.
Ken Timmerman is connected with the GOP, and recently wrote a book about how dangerous Iran's nuclear capability is. I suppose it's as dangerous as Iraq's was (sarcastic).
So, CNN is either doing their info-tainment about day 70 missing teen, or Michael Jackson, Scott Peterson, or 24×7 hurricanes. But, when I see them doing a non-infotainment piece, like with Ken Timmerman, I question who and why they decide to do that? Exactly why? Why does Kent Timmerman get so much unchallenged airtime on CNN, to scare Americans about Iran? Who at CNN decided he's "the guy" for any Iran-related reporting?
There's hard-hitting articles like this about Iran, questioning "who's behind the push to attack Iran?"
http://www.antiwar.com/o...orton.php?articleid=6888
(it's called "investigative journalism, not "have a guy talking about attacking Iran")
Brad, you should talk about how the MSM has not changed, since before the Iraq War. We need a cable news channel not owned by Corporate America.
Americans need to know important, factual news, and they need it to be on TV. We all need it, very badly, in this country. We should all be able to turn on our televisions, and get real important, factual news. This is how important it is: I wouldn't know who Ken Timmerman was, if it wasn't for CNN. That's how powerful news on TV is, and that's why they have to start being accountable. Timmerman seemed like he was a correspondent, instead of a guest, that's how it appeared to me, or how CNN chose to "present" him to the viewers. Not a guy who's pushing a book he just wrote, and another war for the Bush Administration.

The focus of the show is voting rights. But I hope that before the show you will take time to read this March 2004 statement about Iraq from John Lewis (BradShow guest). He speaks the truth.
You can read the pdf here here, but I've copied the text, below.
Read it and weep.
-----------
IRAQ ONE YEAR ANNNERSARY Congressman John Lewis March 18, 2004
Mr. Speaker,
This Friday marks the one-year anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. Over ten thousand Iraqi soldiers are dead. Thousands of Iraqi civilians are dead. Nearly six hundred Americans - six hundred of our sons and daughters - are dead. Thousands more have been wounded - physically and emotionally - their lives forever changed.
But the dead and the wounded are not the only casualties of President Bush's decision to invade Iraq. Something else has died in those desert sands. Something else has been lost.
Truth. Honesty. Integrity.
For over a year, the American people have been deceived by the words of the President and his Administration. Officials at every level have misled the people that they were elected to serve.
We asked for truth, and President Bush told us that "Iraq sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa."
We asked for truth, and Vice President Cheney repeatedly warned us of close ties between Al Qaeda and Iraq.
We asked for truth, and Secretary of State Colin Powell told the United Nations that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.
We asked for truth, and President Bush warned us that Iraq had planes that could fly weapons of mass destruction to our shores.
We asked for truth, and they told us that our troops would be greeted as liberators - that Iraqi oil would pay to rebuild Iraq.
The falsehoods go on and on. I don't know whether the Administration cannot stop - or will not stop. I only know that they do not stop.
Just last Sunday, National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice told the American people that "Iraq was the most dangerous regime in the world."
My Colleagues, this administration will never be able to justify the war on Iraq - because we cannot believe a word they say. They have never been honest about why we went to war. Just ask former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neil.
And it's not just Iraq, it's almost every issue- every comment- every deed. We cannot believe a word they say.
The Bush Administration proposed a $550 billion Medicare Prescription Drug bill - and told us it cost $400 billion.
They cut down trees on public land - and call it "Healthy Forests."
They let industry pollute our air - and call it "Clear Skies."
The President himself- President Bush - proudly told the American people that his budget will cut the deficit in half in five years. But his budget does not pay for Iraq - it does not pay for Afghanistan - it does not pay for his tax cuts for the rich.
My Colleagues - instead of searching for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, we should be searching for truth right here at home. And we won't find it at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue.
The British novelist, John Le Carre' once said "I think the single greatest enemy is the misuse of information, the perversion of the truth in the hands of terribly skilful people."
On the eve of the anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, we all must reflect on these words. President Bush and his administration have misused information. They have perverted the truth.
And now, nearly six hundred Americans are dead.
Ten thousand civilians are dead.
Hundreds of thousands of our sons and daughters - brave men and women - have been torn from their families and sent thousands of miles from home.
I would ask the President what they are fighting for - I would ask him why so many of our young people are dead and wounded - but I don't want his answer. I don't want the answer from Vice President Cheney, Secretary Powell, Donald Rumsfeld or Paul Wolfowitz.
The American people don't want more of what we have been hearing for the past year.
What we want, Mr. Speaker, is the truth.
