Guest host Nicole Sandler with Constitutional law expert Ian Millhiser...
By Nicole Sandler on 2/26/2021 4:45pm PT

I'm sorry to end the week on such a scary note, but I don't make the news, I just report it. It's NICOLE SANDLER again, guest hosting another edition of the The BradCast today. [Audio link to the full show is below.]

I read an article at Vox titled "Two Supreme Court cases could destroy what remains of the Voting Rights Act". It so thoroughly freaked me out that I immediately reached out to its author, IAN MILLHISER, and invited him to join me on The BradCast.

The fact is, Trump stacked the courts with right wingers who'll stop at nothing to get and retain power. And it's not only that. We're headed down a really ugly road, as is evidenced by watching the wingnut travesty that began today in Orlando known as CPAC. One look at the stage and you realize something's not quite right. Look closely and you'll figure it out. There's no question that it's in the shape of the Odal Rune, a decidedly fascist symbol that was worn as a badge by the SS during WWII.

I started the show with the latest news. And ended it with some lighter fare because after all of this depressing stuff, we needed something to laugh about. I hope it worked!...

Guest host Nicole Sandler with historian/author Alexis Coe...
By Nicole Sandler on 2/25/2021 5:13pm PT

I'm back! It's Nicole Sandler, filling in for Brad and Desi for a couple of days so they can celebrate Desi's birthday. Any excuse for some downtime. Welcome to today's BradCast.

It was another busy news day, as confirmation hearings continue for Biden's cabinet picks. The Equality Act passed the House today, but not before Rand Paul went on a homophobic rant, aimed at the first transgender woman to be nominated for a Senate-confirmed federal position. In this case, it was a confirmation hearing for Dr. Rachel Levine, the nominee for Assistant Secretary for Health, and Dr. Vivek Murthy, the Surgeon General Nominee. And Rand Paul just couldn't help himself. He went off on her. And in the House, Marjorie Taylor Greene put up an ugly sign to counter her across-the-hall neighbor Marie Newman, who put out an equality flag to celebrate her transgender daughter and the Equality Act, which would be voted on later in the day. So much for unity.

This country has been through some trying times, and we've survived. Today, we went back to the beginning with historian ALEXIS COE, author of You Never Forget Your First: A History of George Washington.

And before she left to celebrate her birthday, Desi left us with a new edition of the Green News Report...

Guest host Nicole Sandler with author Craig Unger, the latest news, and stories from the Capitol Insurrection...
By Nicole Sandler on 2/5/2021 5:15pm PT

It's a busy BradCast, today! I'm NICOLE SANDLER, guest hosting for Brad and Desi, with a full plate today.

Because this was such a busy news cycle, we begin with the news about the vote that ousted freshman Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (Q-GA) from the two committees Kevin McCarthy put her on. While that was happening in the House, the Senate began a "vote-a-rama" that went on all night. It finally ended at 5:35am, with VP Kamala Harris in her role as Senate President casting the tie-breaking vote to pass a shell of a bill that will eventually contain the $1.9 trillion COVID relief legislation that will require only 50 (+1) votes to pass using the process known as reconciliation.

Because there was so much news breaking on Thursday, something that should have gotten a lot of attention was overlooked by the media. Following the vote in the House to rid the committee of Marjorie Taylor Greene, there was a "special order" hour on the House floor, organized by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Many of us watched her compelling and frightening account of her experience during the Capitol insurrection on January 6, streamed on Instagram Live. It kept me awake most of the night Monday night, as I couldn't shake the feeling of terror she conveyed over the course of the 90-minute live stream. I'm guessing the response she received was overwhelming, as she put together this "special order" event on the House floor to allow other members to tell their stories of what happened to them that awful day. In the second segment of today's show, I share some of those stories, each of which should be included in next week's Impeachment Trial.

Our guest today is author and investigative journalist CRAIG UNGER, whose new book American Kompromat: How the KGB Cultivated Donald Trump, and Related Tales of Sex, Greed, Power, and Treachery who tells us that Trump was absolutely a Russian asset, cultivated decades ago. Fascinating...

Guest host Nicole Sandler with the latest news on DC's dysfunction, and Adam Keller of Israel's Gush Shalom Peace Bloc...
By Nicole Sandler on 12/30/2020 6:10pm PT

No. The headline wasn't a typo. We seem to have reached the end of a few lines today. I’m NICOLE SANDLER, guest hosting the BradCast one more time in this really miserable year.

The first line ending is the year 2020. I know it officially ends tomorrow night, but today is the last new, live show of the year. I know I speak for Brad and Desi when I say 'good riddance' to what was probably the worst year of our lives.

We may be reaching the end of the line in this 244-year-old Democratic Republic. We are witnessing the unraveling of the shaky foundation of this nation as the madman whose power ends in three weeks is getting more desperate and reckless by the day.

We're at the end of the line for the 116th Congress. It moves into the history archives on Saturday; the 117th Congress will be sworn in on Sunday.

Donald Trump seems to be embracing a scorched earth policy, deciding to burn the whole place down if his minions won’t break every rule, law and norm to overturn our Democratic election and install him as Supreme Leader. The reason there's still news breaking and the Senate is in session right now is all due to Trump's destructive and dangerous behavior. And no one in the Republican Party is willing to stand up to him to protect our delicate Democracy over his authoritarian ambitions.

The past four years have been a blur of gaslighting and lies. One of the more reprehensible falsehoods they've pushed is the idea that --- led by Jared Kushner --- they've negotiated Middle East Peace! What was fostered during this time was an unholy alliance between the right wing Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu (who is under indictment on a number of counts of corruption and worse) with the American dictator-wannabe Trump.

When the Trump Administration announced the first of their so-called peace agreements --- this one between Israel and the United Arab Emirates --- my first thought was, "when were Israel and the UAE at war?" (They weren't.)

Over the next few months, they rolled out a few more of these deals...with Bahrain, Sudan and finally, just a few weeks ago, they announced a fourth one... saying "President Donald Trump has brokered a peace agreement between Morocco and Israel."

This one might have been the most offensive of the four, as the so-called deal legitimizes the Moroccan occupation of the Western Sahara.

Some years back, I learned about Gush Shalom, the Israeli Peace bloc, led by activist Uri Avnery. I had the honor of interviewing him a few times over the years. His is a fascinating story. Well into his 90s, Avnery passed away a few years ago. But Gush Shalom continues its advocacy for peace and a two-state solution.

After the so-called peace deal between Morocco and Israel was announced, I received an email from ADAM KELLER, a co-founder with Avnery of Gush Shalom, strongly condemning the deal.

So I reached out to Mr. Keller to get the side of the Israel story that the corporate mainstream media doesn’t report.

Mr. Keller has a thick accent, but I took great care to edit the interview to make it as easy to understand as possible. I hope you’ll give it a listen. Their position is not an isolated one. As I told him, just as I have nothing but contempt for the administration currently in power over here, I know that there are many Israelis equally horrified by the Netanyahu regime.

It's now also apparently the end of the line for Netanyahu's government! We taped that interview two weeks ago. I got another email from Adam on 12/26 that reads...

"Since we talked, events moved fast in Israeli politics. The Knesset was dissolved and we go to new elections --- the fourth time in the past two years. There is a concrete chance of getting rid of Netanyahu - but a real danger that he will be replaced by Gideon Sa'ar, a politician who is a bit less of a demagogue than Netanyahu but at least as right wing. In American terms, that would be like getting rid of Trump and instead getting George W. Bush...

Anyway, the next few months are going to be interesting, one way or another..."

Misery loves company, I suppose.

And we’re at the end of the 2020 line too, thankfully. I made a concerted decision not to produce a Year in Review show this year because, well, 2020. Enough said.

But I always look forward to Dave Barry's year-end missive. One of the few good things about living in South Florida is that Dave Barry, Carl Hiaasen and Leonard Pitts are columnists based at the Miami Herald.

Dave Barry's 2020 Year in Review is too long for me to read in its entirety. But I ended the show with a reading of one pitch-perfect section, the part he calls MARPRIL. Just think back to March and April and you’ll understand...

And I've now reached the end of this post. Thanks to Brad and Desi for trusting me with their show, and thanks to you, Brad’s readers and listeners, for welcoming me into your ears.

Here's wishing us all a return to decency, normalcy and democracy in 2021. Happy New Year!...

Guest host Nicole Sandler with the latest news and guest David Atkins, journalist and new DNC member, on how the party works...and doesn't...
By Nicole Sandler on 12/29/2020 5:53pm PT

After the House passed the CASH Act on Monday, which would give $2000 to individuals instead of the $600 in the Covid-19 relief bill just signed by Trump, and then successfully overrode his veto of the must-pass, annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the action turned to the Senate. I'm NICOLE SANDLER, back today guest hosting the BradCast, making sure we don't fall behind on the end of the year plethora of news, which we knew would be somewhat chaotic due to the madness of Lame Duck Donald (or is that Lame Donald Duck?)

When we last got together, yesterday, the House was still voting on overriding Trump's NDAA veto, and they did so in a big way. The final vote was 322-87. Many of the 87 "No" votes weren't Republicans afraid of crossing dear leader, but progressives balking at another $740 billion windfall for the military industrial complex. Today, the action moved to the Senate, where Majority Leader 'Moscow' Mitch McConnell did exactly what he's best at: blocking the Democrats' call for an up or down vote on the CASH Act.

Senators Chuck Schumer, Bernie Sanders, Ed Markey and Chris Murphy all spoke passionately about the need to help out Americans suffering through the worst crisis in our lifetimes. McConnell just grunted out his objection to their motions. The bottom line? McConnell blocked Schumer's request to approved the $2000 checks by unanimous consent. The Senate then adjourned until 3pm tomorrow, making me shake my head in disbelief. He said there would be a quorum call at 5p Eastern Time followed by a vote on overriding the NDAA. Then we learned that McConnell decided to combine Trump's demand for repeal of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act with legislation to increase the stimulus checks to $2000, effectively poisoning the pill to make it unpassable in the Senate.

This still doesn't address Bernie Sanders' threat to keep the Senate in DC through the holiday weekend if McConnell doesn't agree to a vote on the CASH Act bill passed by the House Monday night. So, I'll be back on Wednesday, hopefully with some answers.

One thing this whole episode has reinforced is the fact that the Democratic Party, as an institution, is just not very good at being an effective opponent of the Republicans. I believe there are many contributing factors, including the generational disconnect of Democratic Congressional leadership. But I've also harbored ill will toward the DNC for a long time due to what I view as their inept management of everything they do.

So one night last week as I was suffering though another bout of insomnia, I happened upon a Twitter thread by DAVID ATKINS. He's a writer (Washington Monthly, The American Prospect among others), and a progressive activist who is also a Democratic Party Regional Director and recently became an elected member of the DNC. The thread was about what he's learned about the DNC's dysfunction since he's been on the inside. It was quite dispiriting, but fascinating. So I invited him on for a conversation about what it would take to turn this party around.

This interview originally aired on my program, The Nicole Sandler Show, last week. Afterwards, a listener sent me this photo of a letter written by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1928, detailing his own issues with the DNC and his suggestions about how to run the Party. They sound a lot like what David Atkins was saying when we spoke! FDR knew what he was talking about. He was elected President four years later.

The more things change, the more they stay the same apparently...

Guest host Nicole Sandler with leading Modern Monetary Theory economist, Stephanie Kelton...
By Nicole Sandler on 12/28/2020 5:58pm PT

We made it to the final week of 2020! That's quite an accomplishment, given what transpired this year. Brad & Desi are taking a much-needed year-end break, so it's NICOLE SANDLER guest hosting The BradCast, for the next few days. [Audio link to full show is posted below summary.]

It used to be that this time of year, especially the week between Christmas and New Years, was what was known as a "slow news" time. We haven't even had a slow news day in the past four years, so why break with tradition now? Since we haven't been here with new programs since December 23, I began today's show with a recap of what happened since.

Donald Trump had been missing in action since the November 3 election in terms of working on the pressing issues of the day --- a COVID relief bill and the year-end funding bill for the U.S. Government. Together they make up the Consolidation Appropriations Act of 2020 (CAA). And then there was the matter of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that had been passed but Trump hadn't yet signed.

When Brad last spoke with you, he reported that Congress, on Monday, passed a $900 billion coronavirus relief package along with the $1.4 trillion omnibus spending bill to keep the government funded through September of 2021, by huge veto-proof margins in both houses. And on Tuesday, Trump awakened from his stupor to call the bill "a disgrace" --- despite it including much of what he himself had asked for --- and demand the payments to individuals be $2000 rather than the $600 his administration had proposed! He had other demands but, as usual, he was confused, conflating things in the COVID relief bill with provisions from his own budget that were contained in the omnibus portion of the bill. But I digress. He threatened to veto the bill or worse, do nothing. In that case, it would just die, with Congress unable to override a pocket veto before the new Congress is seated on January 3, and the entire process to pass the bill must begin again.

On Wednesday, Trump vetoed the NDAA, ostensibly for two reasons: it would require the military to rename bases that were named after figures from the Confederacy and because it doesn't include a repeal of Section 230 of the Communications Act, which shields internet companies from liability for what is posted on their websites by them or third parties.

And then he boarded Air Force One, to spend the holidays at his Palm Beach resort Mar-a-Lago.

To reiterate: while most of the country is suffering, waiting for help to make it through the worst crisis in our lifetimes, Trump was sitting on relief checks, unemployment benefits, an eviction moratorium and rental aid from his Mar-a-lago resort in Palm Beach. At the same time, Vice President Mike Pence is on a skiing vacation in Vail, Colorado, and Treasury Sec. Steven Mnuchin took a private jet down to his vacation home in a Mexican resort near Cabo.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day came and went, as did the Saturday midnight deadline when pandemic relief programs lapsed, throwing more than 12 million Americans who relied on them for unemployment insurance and more into an even worse situation than they had been in already.

Trump finally gave in and signed the CAA on Sunday evening, but additional damage had already been done. As for the master negotiator, he's more like an impetuous child who threw a temper tantrum and then got tired of being locked in his room so he gave up, and got nothing out of it.

That brings us to today. The House is back in session to vote on two items --- a bill changing the dollar amount of the individual checks to be sent out from $600 to $2000 and to override Trump's NDAA veto. As I am posting today's show, the vote on the $2000 checks has now passed with the 2/3 required under the procedures that were used for consideration, 275-134.

The House then voted by an even bigger margin to override Trump's NDAA veto. That vote was 322-87! Tomorrow, the Senate returns to vote on these two bills. The question is whether Mitch McConnell will bring the issue of the larger direct COVID relief payments to the floor.

Senator Bernie Sanders issued a statement demanding a vote: "The House has passed a $2,000 direct payment for working people. It is time for the Senate to act. This week on the Senate floor Mitch McConnell wants to vote to override Trump's veto of the $740 billion defense funding bill and then head home for the New Year. I'm going to object until we get a vote on legislation to provide a $2,000 direct payment to the working class. Let me be clear: If Senator McConnell doesn't agree to an up or down vote to provide the working people of our country a $2,000 direct payment, Congress will not be going home for New Year's Eve. Let's do our job."

Now that a Democrat will be in power in the White House in a few short weeks, the Republicans in Congress are once again singing their austerity tune. Many are objecting to a $2000 payment saying "we can't afford it" or some similar nonsense. So I'm joined by economist, professor, a leading proponent of Modern Monetary Theory, and author of The Deficit Myth: Modern Monetary Theory and the Birth of the People's Economy STEPHANIE KELTON, who explains that not only can we afford to help people suffering through this crisis, we must!...

Guest Host Nicole Sandler with the breaking news; Also: Revolving Door Project's Jeff Hauser on Biden's cabinet picks...
By Nicole Sandler on 12/11/2020 7:11pm PT

It's NICOLE SANDLER back, guest hosting today's BradCast.

When the show began, we still didn't know what the Supreme Court would do about the ridiculous lawsuit brought by Texas' indicted Attorney General Ken Paxton, challenging the Presidential election results in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Georgia. Common sense told me that a legitimate court wouldn't even entertain the idea of a hearing. Texas has no standing to challenge the elections in four other states. The unknown factor was how the three justices appointed to the court by Trump would rule.

Thankfully, Texas lost. We got the news just as I was putting the show to bed, so was able to share the good news! It's over. On Monday, the Electoral College officially casts their votes. I still don't trust Trump, so I wouldn't be surprised by him trying some other nonsense. [Ed note from Brad: Wait for what will happen on January 6th when Congress is supposed to accept the results. It will be a very long day.]

I also worry about his cult of followers. They're nuts, as is he. Please be careful out there. Or don't go out there. With COVID raging, you're better off at home!

So, the Biden-Harris transition team, meanwhile, is busy assembling its cabinet. Of course, we're all Monday morning quarterbacks, and I certainly want as progressive an administration as possible. So today, I'm joined by JEFF HAUSER, co-founder and director of The Revolving Door Project, which "scrutinizes executive branch appointees to ensure they use their office to serve the broad public interest, rather than to entrench corporate power or seek personal advancement"...

Guest Host Nicole Sandler with author/journalist Ari Berman and Law Professor/author Carlton F.W. Larson...
By Nicole Sandler on 11/25/2020 6:08pm PT

Hey, it's NICOLE SANDLER in for Brad and Desi today (they'll be back after the holiday weekend.) On today's BradCast, we're talking turkey. Okay, not really, but it is the day before Thanksgiving, and the lame duck yesterday pardoned a turkey named Corn. The big question is, what happened to the second turkey, Cob? What did Trump do with him? My guess is that Cob is tomorrow night's White House Thanksgiving dinner. Because that's how Trump rolls. [Audio link to show follows below.]

Yes, call me cynical. Actually just put a CY in front of Nicole, and you have cynicole. Perhaps it's spelled wrong, but the point is clear. Perhaps I'm the one who should have taken an early day off instead of filling in today for Brad & Desi so they could unwind. Oh well, it's all gravy now. (Sorry about that!)

Anyway, we started the show with lots of news, from our introduction to President-elect Biden's incoming national security nominees to today's breaking, though unsurprising news that Trump pardoned Michael Flynn, the man who TWICE pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI and who was fired by Trump for lying to Mike Pence too. Maybe that was Trump's second Turkey pardon.

I checked in with ARI BERMAN who covers voting rights for Mother Jones, who engaged in a bit of a postmortem on the 2020 presidential elections.

Then it was time to talk treason. It's a term Trump throws around like a roll of paper towels in Puerto Rico. But I keep using it too, though only when talking about Trump. Because he is endangering American lives --- and 260,000 have already died due to his dereliction of duty and refusal to accept science over conspiracy theories --- I do believe Trump's behavior is treasonous. So I called on an expert.

Professor CARLTON F.W. LARSON teaches constitutional law and English and American history at UC/Davis, and just published his latest book, On Treason: A Citizen's Guide to the Law. When I asked if Trump's behavior was treasonous, he explained that treasonous behavior didn't necessarily mean "treason." Okay, I'm here to learn.

And with that, enjoy the show and have a Happy Thanksgiving...

Guest host Nicole Sandler with Carter Center chair Jason Carter and health insurance industry whistleblower Wendell Potter...
By Nicole Sandler on 11/13/2020 6:07pm PT

What a day this has been! And what a day for Brad & Desi to take off. But I've got it covered. It's NICOLE SANDLER, back to guest host today's edition of the BradCast. [Audio link to show is posted below.]

Things got interesting last night, when CNN finally called Arizona for Biden, and the snowball started rolling. By mid-day Friday, CNN also called Georgia for Biden and North Carolina for Trump, dispensing with the last two races still to be settled. Their final tally: Biden 306 electoral college votes to Trump's 232. The other news organizations quickly followed, and Trump now appears to be toast.

But Georgia is still doing an audit/recount, as Brad explained in detail earlier this week. Apparently, this was going to happen regardless of the outcome. I learned that when I spoke with JASON CARTER, Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Carter Center, which is observing the audit. This is the first time the Carter Center has jumped into US elections, as our practice of employing different voting systems in each state does not meet the Center's criteria for their election observer program.

This afternoon, Donald Trump spoke publicly for the first time since Nov. 4 at 2:30am when, in a very strange moment, he declared himself the winner of the race. Today, the White House announced he was going to talk about progress toward a coronavirus vaccine. Of course, all the networks took the feed live because surely he'd mention the election he lost. He did not. Just like COVID-19, he must figure that if he just ignores it, it'll go away.

But in the middle of this global pandemic, Trump was still trying to take our health care away. The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday heard the Trump Administration's third challenge to the Affordable Care Act. I invited WENDELL POTTER, the only whistleblower from the health insurance industry to step up, to tell us how it went. These days he heads an organization called The Center for Health and Democracy...

Guest Host Nicole Sandler with 'Strongman' author Kenneth C. Davis...
By Nicole Sandler on 10/9/2020 3:50pm PT

It's NICOLE SANDLER back today to guest host the BradCast.

Once again, each day seems to bring at least a week's worth of news, and each week feels like a month. This week alone, we've dealt with the realization that the Rose Garden event of Sept 26 was a 'super spreader' that infected, at latest count, more than 30 people. But Donald Trump insists he's 'cured' and is hawking his latest drug of choice, one that has not yet been approved by the FDA and is not available to the average citizen.

We also learned that a group of domestic terrorists who call themselves 'militia' members were plotting to kidnap the Governor of Michigan and overthrow the government. Just another week in October in Donald Trump's America... He's been ratcheting up the tension and inciting his followers to violence, while screaming about Antifa and Black Lives Matter and calling them the terrorists. Opposite world indeed.

After dealing with Donald Trump for the last four years, I was intrigued by a new book that crossed my desk: Strongman: The Rise of Five Dictators and the Fall of Democracy by historian and author KENNETH C. DAVIS.

Although Mr. Davis doesn't mention Trump in the book, it is most definitely a cautionary tale. As the old saying goes, 'Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it'. Or something like that...

Guest host Nicole Sandler with journalists David Dayen on Trump diagnosed with COVID, Jason Leopold on 'The FinCEN Files'...
By Nicole Sandler on 10/2/2020 4:35pm PT

Brad and Desi sure picked a fine day to take a day off! It's NICOLE SANDLER in today to guest host the BradCast, and it figures that this is when Donald Trump is diagnosed with Covid-19.

It was bound to happen sooner or later as the "commander-in-chief" has completely screwed up our nation's response to the deadly pandemic and has been downplaying every aspect of it to the public since it began. Although the White House and Trump himself both insist that he's doing fine, he was taken to Walter Reed Medical Center today, and reports say that he's completely freaked out by the diagnosis.

DAVID DAYEN is executive editor of the American Prospect magazine, and he joins to me to talk about what it all means. (Hint: we don't really know as nothing like this has ever happened before!)

We're now in a waiting mode... waiting to see if Trump's condition improves or worsens, whether or not there will be any more debates, and for whatever inconceivable event could possibly happen next. Perhaps an asteroid hurling toward us will crash into the Earth... or we'll see more and more irresponsible Republicans come down with the 'rona.

Here's a question for you in the same vein as "if a tree falls in a forest and there's no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?": If Donald Trump wasn't president and causing diversion after diversion to prevent us from focusing on how truly awful he really is, would the big news stories stop falling through the cracks? I ask because what should have been one of the biggest stories of the year is barely registering. BuzzFeed News released the first of many installments in a massive series of articles under the heading The FinCEN Files. It even has its own website.

Based on thousands of "suspicious activity reports" and other US government documents culled over by BuzzFeed reporters and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, it exposes the scope of global financial corruption, the banks who enable it, and the government agencies that have failed to stop it. BuzzFeed News senior investigative reporter JASON LEOPOLD joins me to talk about how this massive project came together and some of what they uncovered.

Guest host Nicole Sandler with author/historian Rick Perlstein and Editor-in-Chief of 'The 19th', Andrea Valdez...
By Nicole Sandler on 9/4/2020 3:59pm PT

It's NICOLE SANDLER, filling in for Brad & Desi, guest hosting today's BradCast once more so they can enjoy a long Labor Day weekend. [Audio link to show is below.]

Our main guest today is author and historian RICK PERLSTEIN who’s just released his fourth and final book in a series on the origins of the modern "conservative" movement in the US, Reaganland: America's Right Turn 1976-1980. It's fascinating to hear the history of the American Right from Perlstein, a true progressive.

I also spoke with ANDREA VALDEZ today. She's Editor-in-Chief of a new non-partisan, non-profit news organization, run by and skewing towards women. It's called The 19th, in honor of the 19th Amendment, which codified women's right to vote, adopted 100 years ago last month.

As usual, we began with a look at the latest news. And today, it's a bombshell dropped last night by The Atlantic magazine. It's a story detailing Donald Trump's horrifically disparaging remarks about the military headlined "Trump: Americans Who Died in War Are 'Losers' and 'Suckers'". Maybe this will open some eyes to who our President really is...

Guest host Nicole Sandler with 'Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump' Producer/Director Dan Partland...
By Nicole Sandler on 9/3/2020 4:33pm PT

It's NICOLE SANDLER, back in to give Brad and Desi a Labor Day break, guest hosting today's BradCast.

Just when you thought Donald Trump had reached rock bottom, he goes even lower. This time, in his efforts to invalidate the upcoming elections (because he knows he's going to lose badly), he actually suggested his supporters vote twice-- once by mail and once in person. As bad as that is, I could easily come up with another dozen or so infractions that would make any sane person cringe.

Although there's a policy within the American Psychiatric Association that says a doctor cannot diagnose the psychological condition of someone they've never examined personally known as the Goldwater Rule, in this case it doesn't apply. That's because we know more about Donald Trump than any other president in history, thanks to the 24/7 news cycle, Trump's proclivity for talking incessantly about himself and his Twitter addiction.

Today, I spoke with DAN PARTLAND, Producer/Director of the new film, Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump. The documentary opened Tuesday everywhere; it's available now on virtually every streaming channel available. It makes the case (as if you didn't already know) that if there's one person for whom the 25th Amendment was likely written, it's Donald J. Trump...

Guest host Nicole Sandler with author, journalist Thomas Frank...
By Nicole Sandler on 8/14/2020 4:59pm PT

It’s NICOLE SANDLER back behind the guest host’s microphone today for a special edition of the BradCast. [Audio link is posted below.]

It's special because I'm joined by one of my favorite guests of all time. THOMAS FRANK is the author of many books, essential reads for anyone who cares about the future of our country and certainly for those with a progressive point of view. What’s the Matter with Kansas?, Pity the Billionaire, Listen, Liberal and The Wrecking Crew are just a few.

Frank's new book is The People, No: A Brief History of Anti-Populism. He gives us the fascinating story behind the populist movement and how the two sides flipped. And he bemoans our lost opportunities to harness the populist power when it was so close so recently...

Guest host Nicole Sandler with Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber and healthcare advocate Laura Packard...
By Nicole Sandler on 7/27/2020 5:08pm PT

It's NICOLE SANDLER, back to guest host today's BradCast! [Audio link to full show is posted below.]

Today we learned that Florida is now considered the epicenter of the global pandemic. Lucky me, I live in South Florida, where we've had more than 10,000 new COVID-19 cases reported every day for the past five days. Things are especially bad in Miami-Dade County, the hardest-hit part of the hardest-hit state. I give the credit for our position to our Governor, a smarmy, unqualified man named Ron DeSantis who's earned his new nickname, Ron DeathSentence.

I reached out to an old friendly acquaintance, DAN GELBER, who is the mayor of Miami Beach. We spoke about his many challenges, including the pandemic that's threatening to shut down his city again, plus the threat of a major storm hitting at this horrible time. It is, after all, hurricane season, and Miami Beach is a barrier island.

As millions of Americans are now without health insurance as a result of losing their jobs due to the pandemic, I spoke with healthcare advocate LAURA PACKARD, who reminded me that three years ago tonight (or three years ago in the very early hours of tomorrow morning), John McCain came to our rescue!

Laura and I are both cancer survivors. I fought lung cancer four years ago; Laura was undergoing chemotherapy three years ago when the Republicans' latest effort to overturn what's left of the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, made it to the Senate floor for a vote. We needed three courageous Republicans to vote with the Democrats to avoid losing access to insurance. Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins had already voted no. And John McCain stepped up to do the right thing and saved the program so that those of us with pre-existing conditions still had the right to pay through the nose for health insurance.

Laura's spending this anniversary helping to put together a healthcare Town Hall with Senators Debbie Stabenow, Tammy Baldwin, Bob Casey and Amy Klobuchar with a bunch of other health care advocates and activists that will be archived here.

As usual, we began with the latest news you need to get you through the day, and a bit of humor in a song by Lauren Mayer too.
