Guest host Nicole Sandler with author, lawyer, Brandeis University professor Anita Hill...
By Nicole Sandler on 10/22/2021 3:58pm PT

It's NICOLE SANDLER, back to guest host the BradCast today for Brad & Desi. [Audio link to full show is posted below this summary.]

Thirty years and 11 days ago, a woman named ANITA HILL swore an oath to tell the truth. She then testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee about her experience working for Clarence Thomas. It was his confirmation hearing for a seat on the US Supreme Court. Her testimony was devastating. It was the first time anyone ever spoke of sexual harassment in such a public venue, especially from someone who was about to become an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

Those of us who were around and paying attention in 1991 remember it clearly, especially the reference to pubic hair on his coke can. Truly offensive. The only thing more offensive was the treatment of Hill by the panel of white male senators on the Judiciary Committee, including its chair, then-Senator Joe Biden.

A quick search of YouTube turns up a few video compilations of the most offensive questions they asked her. Here’s one from CNN, and another from Vice News.

After that, you really should listen to her opening statement too.

Well, it’s 30 years (and 11 days) later, and today, I'm talking with ANITA HILL. She's written a new book, Believing: Our Thirty Year Journey to End Gender Violence.

The topic is an important one that she now realized is her calling. Hill changed the world three decades ago. She's setting out to do it again. I hope you enjoy our conversation nearly as much as I did...

Guest Host Nicole Sandler with Florida Democratic Gubernatorial candidates Charlie Crist and Nikki Fried…
By Nicole Sandler on 10/1/2021 4:06pm PT

It's NICOLE SANDLER, back today to guest host the BradCast. If you didn't already know, I live in Florida (or as I refer to it, FloriDUH!). The biggest priority for me in the 2022 midterm elections is getting rid of the mini Trump Ron DeSantis. (Or as some of us who've been suffering under his rule refer to him, 'MoRon DeathSentence.')

I'm not sure who I'll vote for to replace him, but I'm looking at all the options. Right now, there are two declared Democrats in the race: Florida's Commission of Agriculture & Consumer Services NIKKI FRIED, and former Republican Governor, now Democratic Congressman CHARLIE CRIST, who represents Florida's 13th district.

They both appeared on my show over the last week or so. I thought today was a good opportunity to introduce them to you, as ousting DeSantis will benefit the entire nation.

What did you think? Impressed by either one or both? I'm curious to hear your thoughts. Weigh in in the comments below!

As for the week from hell that just ended, Brad will fill you in on the next show. All I have to say is, 'You go, Progressive Caucus!!!'...

Guest Host Nicole Sandler with filmmaker Yael Bridge, activist Lauren Windsor...
By Nicole Sandler on 9/1/2021 5:28pm PT

It's NICOLE SANDLER, back one more time this week to fill in for Brad & Desi, guest hosting today's BradCast.

I have a fascinating, timely show for you today. But I had to start with the news that broke overnight as the Supreme Court did nothing. They just stood back as the most restrictive anti-abortion law in the nation took effect in Texas when the clock struck midnight this morning, the first day of September. They could have stayed it until they hear an actual challenge to Roe v Wade from Mississippi that's already on the calendar this term, which begins in just a month. And it's doesn't only criminalize abortion at six weeks or at the moment a fetal heartbeat is detected. It also deputizes people to turn in anyone they suspect of trying to get an abortion or "aiding and abetting" an abortion-seeker. Welcome to Gilead. If you want a taste of this strange new Orwellian world, check out the website they launched to help people snitch. Seriously. It's prolifewhistleblower.com.

We are now in the unofficial final week of summer, as Monday is Labor Day. If you're looking for a good movie to watch this weekend, we've got you covered. A new film opens Friday in theaters and on demand called The Big Scary 'S' Word. Director YAEL BRIDGE joins us to tell us all about socialism!

One more thing. When I awoke this morning, I noticed a video of Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, one of the more despicable Republicans in the US Senate had gone viral. Well, progressive journalist and activist LAUREN WINDSOR of The Undercurrent shot undercover video of the liar Senator explaining that Joe Biden did, indeed beat Donald Trump in Wisconsin, fair and square. Oops. Go figure...

Guest hosted by Nicole Sandler with Win Without War's Stephen Miles...
By Nicole Sandler on 8/31/2021 5:36pm PT

On today's BradCast, America's longest war is over. So why isn't anyone happy? It's NICOLE SANDLER back to fill in for Brad and Desi again on the day after the end of the war. [Audio link to full show is posted below.]

I feel as if I stand alone among my media colleagues in applauding President Biden's courage and action. War is messy. It's ugly. People die. People die violent, ugly deaths. It's war. It's bad. And we're finally done with this one. And that's a very good thing.

My guest today is STEPHEN MILES from Win Without War, and is one of the few anti-war voices I've heard on the air (and it's only because I brought him on!)

Seriously, the corporate media is falling all over themselves to prove they can be critical of Biden as well as Trump. But this focus on the last two weeks and the exit from Afghanistan without mentioning the last 20 years is beyond frustrating. On top of that, the 'experts' they're bringing on are the people who got us into this mess in the first place. The pinnacle of hypocrisy holds court for two hours each weekday afternoon on MSNBC. Nicolle Wallace was Communications Director under George W. Bush, and she has the nerve to criticize the President who had the balls to get us out of there? Infuriating.

President Biden actually delivered a great speech today. Though you wouldn't know if from the headlines. For example, an alert from The Hill just hit my inbox. The headline: "Defensive Biden Tries to Put Afghanistan Behind Him". The story that went with it was even more offensive...

Biden insisted that the evacuation operation had been a "success" and pushed back hard against critics who have argued for an ongoing but modest American military presence.

The president also sought to reframe the underlying argument. He asserted that the U.S. had no "vital interest" in Afghanistan that had been left unaccomplished, given that Osama bin Laden had been killed in neighboring Pakistan a decade ago and al-Qaeda had been long ago weakened.

Still, some of Biden’s claims strained credulity, especially his implication that the U.S. withdrawal had gone broadly to plan.

Note that they didn't label that an editorial. That's what they presented as "news." Fox seems to have won. I'm nauseated.

Biden's speech today was, for some reason, in the middle of the day. I'd think a speech this important would be in prime time, but I guess the Administration is reading the same crap I am, and just wanted to make the statement and move on. So I thought I'd share with you some of the speech, as most probably didn't get to hear it in the middle of the work day. I fit in most of it. But you can watch the whole speech here. Just don't read the comments or you'll feel nauseous too...

Guest host Nicole Sandler with journalist/author Spencer Ackerman...
By Nicole Sandler on 8/20/2021 5:54pm PT

Back in the 1960's there was a hit novelty song called "The Name Game." Well these days, I feel like we're living in the middle of The Blame Game! But the mainstream, corporate media is pointing at JOE! If you got all your news from the major networks or cable channels, you'd be convinced that Afghanistan was Joe Biden's fault and that the people responsible for sending our kids to fight in Afghanistan were the heroes of the story. I'm NICOLE SANDLER, guest hosting for Brad and Desi today on the BradCast. [Audio link to full show is posted below.]

The thing helping me keep my sanity is realizing that I'm not the only one seeing this. Judd Legum wrote about the problem in his Popular.Info newsletter about how "media is largely overlooking voices that supported Biden's decision to withdraw from Afghanistan. Instead, media reports are almost exclusively highlighting criticism of the withdrawal --- often from people complicit in two decades of failed policy in Afghanistan." In fact, Legum cites a conversation with a PR pro who was unable to get any of his clients, who are supporters of the withdrawal, booked anywhere...

I’ve been in political media for over two decades, and I have never experienced something like this before. Not only can I not get people booked on shows, but I can’t even get TV bookers who frequently book my guests to give me a call back…

I’ve fed sources to reporters, who end up not quoting the sources, but do quote multiple voices who are critical of the president and/or put the withdrawal in a negative light.

I turn on TV and watch CNN and, frankly, a lot of MSNBC shows, and they’re presenting it as if there’s not a voice out there willing to defend the president and his decision to withdraw. But I offered those very shows those voices, and the shows purposely decided to shut them out.

In so many ways this feels like Iraq and 2003 all over again. The media has coalesced around a narrative, and any threat to that narrative needs to be shut out.

So let me just say that ending our occupation of Afghanistan is a good thing. And I don't need to hear from the architects of this invasion and occupation, though it seems that those are the only people they're booking on these shows.

Aaron Rupar wrote at Vox:

Four presidential administrations share, in varying degrees, the blame for the Taliban’s sudden takeover of Afghanistan --- a development that brought the United States' 20-year war in the country to an ignominious conclusion.

But watch cable news and you'd think some of the retired officials who helped orchestrate and continue the war had learned nothing.

Fox News watchers particularly have been inundated with the message this week that it's all President Joe Biden's fault --- a message coming from veterans of the George W. Bush administration. Take Fox News contributor and former Bush speechwriter Marc Thiessen, who told host Dana Perino during a segment on Monday that the idea of pulling US troops out was "shameful."

You get the idea. For the record, it was Donald Trump who negotiated a "peace agreement" with the Taliban last year, with a withdraw date for U.S. forces of May 1 this year.

Today, I'm joined by a journalist who's covered national security for as long as we've occupied Afghanistan. SPENCER ACKERMAN has written for The New Republic, The Guardian, The Daily Beast and others. He recently launched his own Substack newsletter at ForeverWars.Substack.com. And his book about the so-called War on Terror just hit stores last week. Reign of Terror: How the 9/11 Era Destabilized American and Produced Trump tells the brutal truth about the last 20 years and more, and shows the failure extends to many who came before Joe Biden.

Also today: the latest news. Although I left out the part about the new Jeopardy host being forced to step down before he began, or that Joe Biden is appointing Rahm Emanuel ambassador to Japan, or that OnlyFans is banning sex from their platform. But Hurricane Henri is headed for the Northeast... New York City is in the cone. And there's that big NYC Central Park celebratory concert happening tomorrow. Good luck everyone!...

Guest Host Nicole Sandler with author/journalist Cory Doctorow...
By Nicole Sandler on 7/23/2021 4:04pm PT

It's NICOLE SANDLER , back once again to guest host the BradCast.

Today, I'm thrilled to share an interview with author, journalist and activist CORY DOCTOROW.

Cory is a fascinating man. He's written a slew of books that defy categories. He writes science fiction, young adult novels and non-fiction works on today's topic and more. You can find his bio and info on his books at Craphound.com. And get his daily blog at Pluralistic.net.

The subject he writes a lot about and the one that we discussed today is the issue of monopolies and anti-trust.

We actually began this conversation in June, the first time he appeared on my show. As I usually do, I booked him for a half hour. Well, that wasn't nearly enough. So as the interview wound down, I invited him back, and we set a date for the next month. Our timing was fortuitous.

During that first interview, Cory broke what was news to me, saying that a package of antitrust legislation was working its way through Congress, and we'd soon be hearing about it. Sure enough, the following week, we heard about the House Judiciary Committee marking up that package of bills!

Then, on the Friday before we were scheduled for our second interview, President Biden announced a massive Executive Order containing 72 provisions encouraging competition, and taking aim at the monopolies that are strangling the nation.

It was a fascinating hour that I'm thrilled to share with you here on The BradCast!...

Guest host Nicole Sandler with journalist and author Anthony DePalma...
By Nicole Sandler on 7/22/2021 4:43pm PT

Brad and Desi are out today dealing with technical gremlins, so it's NICOLE SANDLER, back in to guest host the BradCast today. [Audio link to today's show is posted below.]

As you may be aware, I live in South Florida. For the past week or so, the people of Cuba have taken to the streets in protest for the first time since 1994. They're out in the streets of Miami too.

Down here, we deal with the realities of Cuba regularly, but the rest of the country not so much. So I thought today would be a good time to just get a primer on where things stand on the island that sits 90 miles from the southernmost tip of Florida.

ANTHONY DEPALMA was a reporter and foreign correspondent for the NY Times for 22 years. He continues to write for the Times and other publications while writing books, a number of which have been about Cuba. His latest is The Cubans: Ordinary Lives in Extraordinary Times.

Last week, he penned an op-ed for the Washington Post, "As in 1994, Cubans Protest Against a Regime's Mortal Threat". He gave us a brief background of the island's history, and told us a bit about the new ruler --- the first non-Castro to rule the nation since the Castros took power some 60 years ago.

DePalma stressed the fact that the US embargoes and the policy against allowing Cubans to send money to family members still on the island has added to the misery of the people there.

Now, with news of horrific crackdowns by the government on the protesters, the Biden administration today announced a new round of sanctions against those Biden says are "responsible for the oppression of the Cuban people."

As usual, we began with the latest news-- COVID is surging, the Olympics are officially starting tomorrow, and Joe Biden held a CNN Town Hall last night, where his answers about the future of the filibuster were less than satisfying.

And Desi Doyen left us with a particularly dark Green News Report. Enjoy!...

Guest host Nicole Sandler speaks with Ohio's former Congressman...
By Nicole Sandler on 6/18/2021 5:00pm PT

It's NICOLE SANDLER again filling in for Brad and Desi on today's BradCast.

After an update on the latest news, I welcome a regular guest from the last decade, former Congressman DENNIS KUCINICH. He left Congress after 12 years in office back in January of 2013 after Ohio gerrymandered his district out of existence, and became a contributor to Fox (not) News. So I hadn't seen or heard from him in over a decade. Until last week.

That's when he published his book, The Division of Light and Power, which details his infamous fight against City Hall while he was Mayor of Cleveland and refused to sell the city's power company to private interests. It's a story that could easily be a movie and, according to Dennis, there's some interest. But he just wanted to get the book out, as it's been decades in the making.

Oh, and he's running to be Mayor of Cleveland again!...

Guest host Nicole Sandler with Edward-Isaac Dovere, author of 'Battle For The Soul: Inside the Democrats' Campaigns to Defeat Trump'...
By Nicole Sandler on 5/28/2021 4:47pm PT

Thank God it's Friday! I don't think I could take another day like this one. It's NICOLE SANDLER, guest hosting the BradCast again while Brad and Desi try to dodge the jackhammers making work at their studio impossible. Hopefully the noisy work will be done soon so they can get back in time for the next show!

We begin today's show with the first Senate filibuster of the 117th Congress, and it was a doozy. First of all, the vote was 54-35. In any other civilized country, majority rules, and the motion to open debate on forming an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol would begin. But in the opposite world that is our reality, the minority wins. Again.

Six Republicans joined every Democrat present in voting to invoke cloture. But with 54 yes votes, that means they're two Democrats short. Two Democrats didn't show up to vote to investigate the attack on our government! The two are Patty Murray of Washington and Kyrsten Sinema, the thorn in the side of good Democrats everywhere. Murray released a lame statement blaming a "personal family matter." I'm biting my tongue because, unless someone is dying, there's no excuse for her missing that vote. As for Sinema, she's a heinous, horrible person who's misrepresented herself to the electorate. In my book, that's fraud, and she should be driven from office. Calls to her office today were unanswered.

But it wouldn't have mattered anyway. There were not 10 Republican votes because there aren't 10 Republicans in the senate with principles. Yes, our Democracy is still horribly broken.

But at least we got Donald Trump out of the White House, so we've got that going for us. But it wasn't easy.

The 2020 election season was the subject of today's interview with EDWARD-ISAAC DOVERE. In addition to being a columnist for The Atlantic, he's the author of the just-released book, Battle For The Soul: Inside the Democrats' Campaigns to Defeat Trump, which, as the title suggests, brings us back to the trauma of the 2020 election season, beginning with election night 2016 as an incredulous Barack Obama watched his nemesis Donald Trump inexplicably become the next President.

I'm very glad the weekend has arrived...

Guest Host Nicole Sandler with 'United States of War' author and American University anthropology professor David Vine...
By Nicole Sandler on 5/27/2021 4:54pm PT

NICOLE SANDLER back again, holding down the fort, guest hosting the BradCast while Brad and Desi are sidelined due to jackhammers tearing up the concrete outside their studio. Hopefully the noise ends soon, and they can return. [Audio link to full show is posted below.]

President Biden announced recently that he'd withdraw all American troops from Afghanistan by 9/11-- the 20th anniversary of the attack. But now, military officials say that the withdrawal will be complete by early-mid July. The fact is, there’s no reason we should have been in Afghanistan for 20 years...but it seems that when the United States sends troops somewhere, they usually leave a few behind.

So I thought today was a good day to talk with DAVID VINE, Professor of Anthropology at American University and author of United States of War: A Global History of America's Endless Conflicts, from Columbus to the Islamic State. Vine explains, among other things, that in its 245-year existence, the US has been involved in war for all but 11 of those years!

After a heavy discussion about war, I thought it was time to lighten the mood a bit. One of my favorite pandemic discoveries is the Marsh family from Kent, England, who have charmed the world with their musical videos dealing with life during the pandemic and lockdowns. I know that Brad shared their song imploring everyone to get vaccinated, "Have the New Jab" because I sent it to him to try to ease his needle nervousness.

Memorial Day is Monday, and now that most of us have been vaccinated, many will head out to parties or other gatherings for the holiday. Well, apparently the Marsh family is a bit ahead of us, as it seems that Ben and Danielle, the Marsh parents, overdid it on their first night out with friends, and the children scold them in song in this clever mashup of song parodies, "Sipping Through Their Fingers / Father and Sons," giving Abba and Cat Stevens the Marsh Family treatment. Enjoy!...

Guest host Nicole Sandler with Guns Down America's Igor Volsky...
By Nicole Sandler on 5/26/2021 5:30pm PT

It's NICOLE SANDLER, back in to guest host another edition of the BradCast so that Brad and Desi don't have to shout over the sound of jackhammers. [Audio link to today's show is posted below summary.]

I had a different show planned for today, but that can wait for another day. We awoke this morning to the news of yet another mass shooting. According to the Gun Violence Archive, this is the 232nd incident in which at least four people were shot in the US so far this year. Although it seemed as if we got a bit of a respite in 2020 due to the pandemic, that's the not the case at all. Instead, 2020 is the year in which gun violence killed more people than any other year in at least two decades.

It was just a few weeks ago that we had a spate of shootings in a few days, and I called on IGOR VOLSKY. He's the founder and executive director of Guns Down America, and author of the book, Guns Down. I decided to share that interview here today on The BradCast because Volsky is feeling optimistic that we're making progress in the area of guns.

The headline of this post is a line from a song I played after the interview. The artist is Cheryl Wheeler. She wrote the song, "If It Were Up To Me" in 1998 after the Jonesboro schoolyard shooting. I learned of it the following year, after Columbine. I sadly play it when it happens again. I felt the need to play it today...

Guest host Nicole Sandler with economist, author and Modern Monetary proponent Stephanie Kelton...
By Nicole Sandler on 5/25/2021 3:59pm PT

It's NICOLE SANDLER guest hosting The BradCast for the next few days while they tear up the concrete around Brad & Desi's studio.

After a look at the news and the latest Green News Report, we turned to today's guest, STEPHANIE KELTON . She's an economist, an expert in Modern Monetary Theory and the author of The Deficit Myth: Modern Monetary Theory and the Birth of the Peoples Economy.

While the Republicans keep screaming about the deficit, you must remember they only do that when Democrats are in charge. When a Republican is in the White House and when they also control Congress, they spend like it's going out of style.

Well, Stephanie explains that "every deficit is good for someone." She says: "Don’t run away from the word deficit. In financial terms, the other side of their deficit lies a financial surplus in some other part of the economy. The question is for whom? Who is getting it? And for what? Are we using the deficit to make investments in critical infrastructure and R&D? Fighting climate change, paying for education...doing those sorts of things? Or are we using the deficit simply to deliver a windfall for people in our society who least need the help?”

So the Republican talking points about things being too expensive are just that, talking points...

Guest host Nicole Sandler with Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) and Ruth Bader Ginsberg's co-author Amanda L. Tyler...
By Nicole Sandler on 4/30/2021 4:34pm PT

Brad & Desi are out today. They’re getting their second Moderna vaccine. Hopefully any side effects they get will be long gone by Monday. Anyway, that's why it's me here today, NICOLE SANDLER once again guest hosting The BradCast.

After a look at the latest news, we salute great American women today! I was inspired Wednesday night by the sight of the first female VP sitting behind the President at the (not) State of the Union address, next to the first female Speaker of the House. Their elbow bump was historic!

So today, I feature two fabulous powerful female guests.

First up is Democratic SEN. MAZIE HIRONO of Hawaii. She just released her first book, Heart of Fire: An Immigrant Daughter’s Story. She’s become one of the more outspoken Senators on the Dem side in her second term. She's up for re-election again in 2024.

If I had to pick one American woman alive during my lifetime who I’d like to interview, it's hands down Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Obviously, that's no longer possible. But in her final months, Ginsburg enlisted one of her former clerks, now a law professor at UC Berkeley, AMANDA L. TYLER to help her compile her swansong.

The book, attributed to both women, Justice, Justice Thou Shalt Pursue: A Life's Work Fighting for a More Perfect Union, is a collection of Ginsburg's lectures, briefs, oral arguments and Supreme Court decisions that she felt best represented her body of work...

Guest host Nicole Sandler with Rep. Ted Deutch, journalist Ryan Grim...
By Nicole Sandler on 4/16/2021 8:10pm PT

NICOLE SANDLER here, once again guest hosting The BradCast. I'm numb today, as there was yet another mass shooting overnight. This one was at a Fed Ex facility in Indianapolis. The shooter, a 19-year old former employee, killed eight people before turning the gun on himself.

That follows another cop killing another Black kid, another school shooting, and another mass shooting before that…all within the last few weeks. And that's a non-exhaustive list.

I live in Coral Springs, FL. We're next door to Parkland, with whom we share Fire and Police departments. Obviously, we know from mass shootings down here.

My congressman is TED DEUTCH. Since the massacre of 17 students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School three years ago, Congressman Deutch has really stepped up his game on trying to do something about our national gun problem.

He was a guest on my own show Monday, and given the latest swarm of shootings, I thought that would be a good segment to include today.

Yesterday, I awoke to a story at The Intercept from RYAN GRIM, who reported that a group of progressive members of Congress were going to, on Friday, introduce a plan to expand the Supreme Court from its current nine members to 13. He joins us today to put that story into context, to explain why the PRO Act is so important, and a bit about the possibility of DC statehood anytime soon.

Guest host Nicole Sandler with Constitutional law expert Ian Millhiser...
By Nicole Sandler on 2/26/2021 4:45pm PT

I'm sorry to end the week on such a scary note, but I don't make the news, I just report it. It's NICOLE SANDLER again, guest hosting another edition of the The BradCast today. [Audio link to the full show is below.]

I read an article at Vox titled "Two Supreme Court cases could destroy what remains of the Voting Rights Act". It so thoroughly freaked me out that I immediately reached out to its author, IAN MILLHISER, and invited him to join me on The BradCast.

The fact is, Trump stacked the courts with right wingers who'll stop at nothing to get and retain power. And it's not only that. We're headed down a really ugly road, as is evidenced by watching the wingnut travesty that began today in Orlando known as CPAC. One look at the stage and you realize something's not quite right. Look closely and you'll figure it out. There's no question that it's in the shape of the Odal Rune, a decidedly fascist symbol that was worn as a badge by the SS during WWII.

I started the show with the latest news. And ended it with some lighter fare because after all of this depressing stuff, we needed something to laugh about. I hope it worked!...
