[Now UPDATED with audio archives at the bottom. Enjoy!]

It's my final night this week guest hosting the nationally syndicated Mike Malloy Show. Mike will be back Monday, but until then, we'll be BradCasting our last show for a while again LIVE from L.A.'s KTLK am1150 9pm-Midnight ET (6p-9p PT). It's your last chance for a while to join us by tuning in, chatting in, Tweeting in and calling in!

The LIVE (and very lively!) chat room will be up and rolling right here at The BRAD BLOG during the show, so come on by while you're listening! (The Chat Room will open at the bottom of this item a few minutes before airtime, see down below, just above "Comments" section.)

So far scheduled for tonight's show...

  • GORDON PETERSON, a long-time Democratic Party activist from Dallas and a now-former Malloy Show podcast subscriber who cancelled his subscription, in no small part, because he hates it when I guest host, believes I'm "election-wise clueless", a "Ludditte", doesn't like my "kneejerk halfassed crap" about getting rid of e-voting, and believes we need "MORE computers, rather than less" in our public election systems. He'll explain all of the above tonight! Should be a lively conversation!
  • CLINT CURTIS, former Florida computer programmer/whistleblower who has long-alleged (via sworn affidavit, video-taped testimony to a U.S. House Judiciary panel, and a polygraph test ) that he was asked by former Republican Congressman Tom Feeney to create a vote-rigging software prototype, as originally reported by The BRAD BLOG in 2004, and continuously ever since, and now as told in the documentary: Murder, Spies & Voting Lies: The Clint Curtis Story, on his candidacy in California's 4th U.S. Congressional district to unseat incumbent Republican Tom McClintock.
  • PLUS: Everything else we didn't get to this week, including YOUR calls on anything you'd like at 877-520-1150, and your tweets to @TheBradBlog and whatever else comes up along the way...

The Mike Malloy Show is nationally syndicated on air affiliates around the country and also on Sirius Ch. 146 & XM Ch. 167. You may also listen online to the free LIVE audio stream at affiliate GREEN 960 in San Francisco or via MikeMalloy.com.

POST-SHOW UPDATE: We had a terrific week sitting in for Mike and Kathy, and hope you enjoyed it even a fraction as much as we did. It was a great week of shows, and tonight (I don't think) was no exception. Audio archives all posted down below, and the archive of the chat room, as usual, below it (wherein Gordon showed up to take still more punishment after coming on air, for some reason)...

Registrar issues 5-page report, offering explanations for the no-less-than-6 different problems that occurred when I attempted to cast my ballot on the ES&S voting system last month..
By Brad Friedman on 7/7/2010 4:00pm PT

[Ed Note: L.A. County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean Logan was my guest on Wednesday night to discuss this report and its associated issues, as I am guest hosting the Mike Malloy Show again this week. The audio archive of that interview is now posted here. - BF]

-- Brad Friedman, The BRAD BLOG

The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's office has issued a 5-page report on the complete failure I experienced while attempting to cast a ballot on the county's electronic voting system during this year's June 8th statewide primary.

The failures that I encountered last month --- as I detailed that night --- mirrored, almost exactly, those that occurred when I attempted to use the very same system, at the very same polling place, during the statewide primary in June of 2008 when the ES&S InkaVote Plus e-voting system that time had misprinted 4 out of 12 of my votes.

This time, it didn't misprint my ballot because I caught the problem --- on two separate machines --- before getting to the point where the system would have printed out my ballot. And this time, just as they concluded after a detailed investigation last time, L.A. County Registrar Dean Logan's office is chalking it up to, essentially, 'human error', in addition to limitations and inadequacies of the e-voting system itself...

Failure echoes 2008, as two different machines and at least six different failures stymie both poll workers and county officials at my own home precinct...
By Brad Friedman on 6/8/2010 11:50pm PT

-- Brad Friedman, The BRAD BLOG

Two years ago, in June of '08, the ES&S "InkaVote Plus" e-vote system in Los Angeles County misprinted 4 out of 12 of my own votes.

Today, as I tried to vote on the same system, the failure was even worse. Incredibly. And not just because I cover issues of Election Integrity for a "living."

I spent more than two and a half hours not casting a vote on the system before eventually I, the poll workers, and, apparently, the folks at the L.A. County Registrar's central help desk call center, simply gave up. A complete and total failure of the e-voting system for disabled voters in the nation's largest voting jurisdiction. Again. On a system the county spent millions to buy in order to comply with the federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) boondoggle by allowing disabled voters to cast their votes independently. Complete and total failure.

I did my best to document the disaster as it happened, in real time, on my Twitter feed. But the cell signal was very bad at the polling place, so not everything got out. But here's what happened in detail, and with a few graphics tossed in...

Last night, the far Righties over at FreeRepublic linked to my story yesterday on ACORN 'Pimp' Hoaxster James O'Keefe being dressed down by a federal judge, before being given a free ride to avoid trial and personal accountability for attempting to tamper with the phones of Louisiana's Democratic U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu.

As usual, all of the comments there, in reply, are fun to read --- if you have enough antibodies to ward off the toxins --- but here are just a few of my personal faves :-) ...

PLUS: I'm back...
By Brad Friedman on 5/3/2010 11:42am PT

After hearing the lazy corporate media meme over the last several days asking whether the BP oil spill catastrophe was "Obama's Katrina," it was nice to see the meme properly re-aligned last night on Twitter by @OTOOLEFAN who announced: "This oil spill is Sarah Palin's Katrina."

Apparently he wasn't the first, however, to do so, as the ubiquitous @Shoq gave credit to @yrustupid's first invocation.

And with those attributions out of the way, I'll take the opportunity to note that after two long weeks on the road and often off the grid (when I wasn't doing Russian TV from NV or guest hosting for Malloy from San Fran) for largely unrelated work, I'm finally back in the 'hood today with much to get caught up on this week. Thanks for your patience during my mostly-absence over the last coupla weeks and (possibly) in the coming days as I get caught up. My thanks to both The BRAD BLOG's Ernie Canning and Brilliant at Breakfast's Jill C. for filling occasional gaps as they were able to find time while I was gone!

Feel free to use the comment section on this item to let me know about anything you think I may have missed over last week or two but still need to know about!

By Brad Friedman on 4/11/2010 3:41pm PT

A gentle reminder here that The BRAD BLOG runs almost solely on the support of donations from readers like you.

The BRAD BLOG receives no corporate or foundational support, has no deep-pocket "angel" contributors (though we'd welcome one or three!), and the ads running on this site cover very very little (extremely little!) of the actual costs we have to cover each month just to stay up and running.

It's been an exhausting last several months here as we've directly taken on, with some success, some absolute Goliaths. And while I think we've been instrumental in helping to substantially turn back the tsunami of corporate media distributed disinformation which has helped to undermine democracy in one of the greatest Rightwing Hoaxes of the modern era, I have failed to find time during it all to post a direct plea to help underwrite all of the work done here.

If you support that work, please consider donating as a vote for it to continue --- particularly in this crucial election year. While donations of any amount are always appreciated, monthly sustaining contributions --- also in any amount you chose --- are even more so. You can make such a contribution, security and quickly, via the light-blue "Please Help Support The BRAD BLOG" box you'll see if you scroll down our right sidebar.

Snail mail contributions are also welcome, made out to: Brad Friedman / 7095 Hollywood Blvd., #594 / Los Angeles, CA 90028.

I hate asking, try to do so as little as I can, and wouldn't do so at all unless it was necessary. So I thank you mightily in advance for your consideration... --- Brad

By Brad Friedman on 3/31/2010 3:13pm PT

Sorry this took a few days to get posted. Have been busy. As noted last week, on Saturday I made my third appearance in as many years at the annual "L.A. Media Reform Summit" sponsored by CA Common Cause. It was again held at Occidental College, and I was honored to serve as their keynote speaker for the first time this year.

Below is the video of my full speech, in which I discussed the serious crisis we now face as our corporate mainstream media hit full fail mode. That point, as I argued, is exemplified by 1) the massive failures of the old "dead tree" media to meet their constitutional responsibilities to help protect the public from bad guys (as illustrated by the NYTime's months of damaging and flagrant misreporting on the ACORN "Pimp" Hoax, as we've been covering at The BRAD BLOG for months), and 2) the full, rightwing take-over of nearly every inch of the public's broadcast spectrum by a handful of corporations that do not meet their FCC license obligations to manage those airwaves in the public's interest (as we've been covering at The BRAD BLOG and elsewhere for years).

I also discussed your responsibility in doing something about both of those serious problems!

The video is posted below the fold, since it's about 40 minutes in all, and might otherwise get interupted by the main page's auto-refresh routines. Enjoy. And get to work!...

I'm tremendously moved and honored to join the extraordinarily distinguished list of previous honorees in accepting the BuzzFlash "Wings of Justice" award.

My humblest thanks to BuzzFlash and their founder Mark Karlin for both their kind recognition, as well as for their many years of tireless, unflinching, and independent work in the fight for truly progressive values.

Here is their official award announcement, detailing their reasons for granting us the award, in their words, "for Tenaciously Pursuing Stories Exposing the GOP Others Ignore." They also call me a "junkyard dog"...and I like it!

After being largely off grid for the last several days on an unrelated job, and a harrowing late-night flight back from Portland on Alaska Air (I blame Palin), I'm finally getting back to work today. Lots to catch up on over next several days.

Feel free to let me know in comments here if there's anything you believe may need my attention, or that you think I may not know about but may want to...

P.S. We ticked up over 1,000 followers on Twitter at some point over the last day or two. Congrats to @bcctmv who seems to be the 1,000th! If you're not following @TheBradBlog there yet, what's the hold up? You're missing lots of fun stuff that doesn't make it over here to the blog!

Also, our Facebook page (started much later) is now nearing 700 fans. If you want to spread the good word over there, it's much appreciated! Please jump in if you're a FB user!

PLUS: Blistering blogosphere reaction for Hoyt's refusal to recommend corrections from 'paper of record'
ALSO: Online petition launched, calling for retractions...
By Brad Friedman on 2/24/2010 2:56pm PT

After not hearing from New York Times Public Editor Clark Hoyt for nearly a week --- during which I'd sent him more and more indisputable evidence that Andrew Breitbart employee James O'Keefe never played his infamous "pimp" character in the offices of ACORN --- he responded with a couple of blistering charges. The email was sent several hours after we'd published our article yesterday, detailing his various untenable justifications for not recommending retractions by the "paper of record" for multiple undeniably fallacious articles on O'Keefe and Breitbart's discredited hoax ACORN "pimp" videos.

Hoyt equated our use of offering independently verifiable and incontrovertible hard evidence, demonstrating the Times, their Senior Editor for Standards Greg Brock, and Hoyt himself were simply wrong, time and again, in falling for the rightwing hoax, and my attempt at seeing accountability for it, with a "political agenda" on par with the Rightwing propagandists who ran the dishonest partisan smear campaign to destroy ACORN.

The fall-out in the blogosphere has been quickly broadening since The BRAD BLOG's exclusive yesterday. Responses from a number of influential blogs and bloggers include a call for Hoyt to step down as the paper's ombudsman, a blistering description of this particular rationalization of his [emphasis Hoyt's]...

The story says O’Keefe dressed up as a pimp and trained his hidden camera on Acorn counselors. It does not say he did those two things at the same time

...as "unforgivable," and the charge that "the paper allowed its desire to seem 'fair' to the right trump its commitment to being fair to the facts." Also, an online petition calling for NYTimes retractions was just launched. (More details and fall-out below.)

Hoyt wrote back in response to the "Last Chance" note I'd sent him on Monday, offering a final opportunity to re-consider his previous assessments, in which he'd found that no correction was in order for the paper, "because that would require conclusive evidence that The Times was wrong, which I haven't seen"...

Incredibly --- or perhaps not so much, given the various horrible news the week before last --- I completely lost track that last Sunday (1/24) was OUR SIXTH ANNIVERSARY here at The BRAD BLOG.

So, Happy Birthday to the "six or seven"* of us who are now six years old!!! If you're inclined to share your own thoughts, most or least favorite BRAD BLOG moments or stories, changes or improvements you'd like to see in the year ahead, or anything else you'd like to get off your birthday chest in comments, I hope you will.

If you're able to share more than just comments, please consider signing up for a much-needed monthly sustaining contribution as a birthday gift if you can afford to. Trust me, we really need it! (If you can help, use the light blue box in the right sidebar to sign up for an automatic monthly contribution of any amount you like --- it's very quick and easy!).

Even "six or seven"* dollars a month from a tiny fraction of those who read these pages each day would make an extraordinary difference here, and go a long way towards helping us to continue bringing you real, fearless, independent, progressive media! If you prefer, a one-time donation, we'll take that too! We receive no corporate or foundational funding here, nor do we get free links/money-galore from folks like Drudge like certain wingnut operatives do, so your support is all that keeps us alive.

Either way, my thanks to all "six or seven"* of you, for your generosity, perseverance, kindness, strength, wisdom, dedication, charity, good spirits, support for the underdog, combativeness and community for all of these years. All of which has made it an honor and privilege --- if sometimes an exhausting and occasionally dispiriting one --- to wake each morning to face each new day here with you all. On behalf of Ernie, 99, Desi, Frank, everyone else who tosses in when they can, and especially John Gideon in both heart and spirit, thank you all for helping to see us through yet another year. May the next one be much brighter...

-- Brad

By Brad Friedman on 1/22/2010 10:50pm PT

Never thought I'd miss the 2000s, but if this week is any indication of what's to come, can we please roll back the clock?

Hundreds of thousands died in Haiti. Detainees were revealed to have been murdered in American custody at Gitmo. Democracy died again in Diebold's Massachusetts. A faint hope for reviving the death of the public's airwaves dies yet again as Air America dies. And the U.S. Supreme Court commits mass murder of everbody and everything else that had still been left teetering.

Worse. Week. Ever.

As it happened, I was previously scheduled to be a guest on Peter B. Collins' podcast yesterday to discuss MA. Suffice to say, the conversation ended up a bit broader, and a great deal darker.

If you'd like to listen, if you can stand to, it's now posted here...
