Isn't it time for a REAL President again?
By Brad Friedman on 10/17/2004 4:35pm PT

Watching the debates over the last few weeks, it's occured to me how nice it'll be to once again have a real President of this country, instead of somebody who's playing "President".

This embarrassing passage from Ron Suskind's New York Times' Magazine article on Bush today sorta sums it all up. It's from a meeting in the Oval Office in December of 2002 where Bush was discussing "The Road Map for Peace in the Middle-East" with lawmakers. On the topic of which army could be trusted as peacekeepers by both Israelis and Palestinians, Hungarian born Holocaust survivor Congressman Tom Lantos, a Democrat, spoke up:

Lantos went on to describe for the president how the Swedish Army might be an ideal candidate to anchor a small peacekeeping force on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Sweden has a well-trained force of about 25,000. The president looked at him appraisingly, several people in the room recall.

''I don't know why you're talking about Sweden,'' Bush said. ''They're the neutral one. They don't have an army.''

Lantos paused, a little shocked, and offered a gentlemanly reply: ''Mr. President, you may have thought that I said Switzerland. They're the ones that are historically neutral, without an army.'' Then Lantos mentioned, in a gracious aside, that the Swiss do have a tough national guard to protect the country in the event of invasion.

Bush held to his view. ''No, no, it's Sweden that has no army.''

The room went silent, until someone changed the subject.

Vote November 2nd. Dear God, please vote! And take as many friends with you as you can. Please?

Caught Red-Handed. The Deception Continues.
A BRAD BLOG Follow-up...
By Brad Friedman on 10/17/2004 3:00pm PT

Following up a BRAD BLOG article from Oct. 6th...

During the Vice-Presidential Debate Dick Cheney accused John Edwards of being "dead wrong" when Edwards asserted that "we've taken 90 percent of the coalition casualties." Cheney argued that we've only taken 50 percent because Edwards, apparently, was not counting Iraqis as part of the "Coalition".

To fact-check that, I went to the White House website to see who they counted as part of the "Coalition" and came across a page at the site from a special "RENEWAL IN IRAQ" report they have online. The page was entitled "The Coalition".

On the page was a sidebar (pictured at right) with a link to a document named "Who are the Coalition Members?" Clicking that link lead to an error page that said "The file you have attempted to access cannot be found..."

Thanks to Google's cached archive of the White House site, I was able to find the document originally linked there which listed some 40 countries as "Members of the Coalition". None of them were named Iraq.

A Bush supporter Emailed me that accidents like that happen all the time, and I shouldn't presume, simply from a broken link, that the White House was trying to hide something. Especially since I had also asked in my original article "what other official pieces of information once posted to the White House website (theoretically owned by the people of the United States of America) have been scrubbed as well from the historical record?" He told me that he'd written to the White House Webmaster to tell them about it, and he suggested I give them a week or so to fix the link before crying foul. He had a point, and so I too emailed the webmaster to ask what was up.

That was almost two weeks ago, and I've not received a reply from the White House webmaster on the topic. However, you'll be glad to know they fixed the link. By removing it. The updated sidebar on the same page (pictured at right) no longer features a link to "Who are the Coalition Members?" It's just been scrubbed entirely.

The White House can no longer be given the benefit of the doubt here, since someone had to actually change the linked graphic in question. Historical documentation on the people's web site has been removed. Period. Who knows what else is no longer there, removed after it was no longer political useful to the White House to have it online? (And are they supposed to be using the tax payer supported White House website for political purposes?)

For the record, since the Iraq War began, America has taken 1,100 military casualties. All other countries combined in the "Coalition" (whoever they may be) have taken a total of 138 military casualities. America's share of "Coalition" casualties: 89.5%.

Bush/Cheney '04: Will Say Anything to Win.

UPDATED THOUGHT: Remember how critical the Right was of Michael Moore for showing all those happy Iraqi children playing peacefully in Saddam's Iraq in Fahrenheit 9/11? Well, here's the White House's banner graphic for their special "Renewal in Iraq" report on their website:

It should be noted that some 21,800 Iraqi civilians, many of them children like the ones above, have been killed in Iraq since America started the war there.

LATE UPDATE 10/18/04: Audio and Video now being removed from White House Website as well! See this update - "More Scrubbing of White House Website!!! Audio & Video Removed!"

MUCH LATER UPDATE 10/22/04: Hooray! Mainstream media finally picks up on this story!

No Longer Supports All-Volunteer Army!
(Learning from Drudge here...)
By Brad Friedman on 10/16/2004 8:02pm PT

"My opponent seems to be willing to say almost anything he thinks will benefit him politically," he said. "After standing on the stage, after the debates, I made it very plain we will not have an all-volunteer army." --- George W. Bush, Oct 16, 2004

Yup. He actually said it.

And in the same way he's told us over and over that Kerry "would require a permission slip from the U.N. before defending America", I believe Bush meant it.

Seriously, look at the picture, isn't there something wrong this guy?

The Miscalculation Continues...
By Brad Friedman on 10/16/2004 6:49pm PT

The Bush Legacy hit another milestone today as the 1100th American troop was killed in George Bush's "catastrophic success"...

Bring ‘em on: Five U.S. troops killed by car bombs in Iraq (Thanks Mark for the link)
Bring ‘em on: 2nd Brigade soldier dies after ambush
Bring ‘em on: 2nd Infantry Division soldier killed by enemy fire
Bring ‘em on: National Democratic Coalition party official killed south of Baghdad
Bring ‘em on: The holy Muslim month of Ramadan got off to an uneasy start Saturday as an Iraqi official was assassinated in Kirkuk, a U.S. soldier was killed in Mosul, a hospital worker died in a mortar attack and a police officer was killed.
Bring ‘em on: Five Churches, Hospital Bombed in Baghdad

Source: Today in Iraq

That's the bad news. But in good news, according to AP, we brought this little terrorist insurgent bastard to justice!

Iraqi boy Hussam Achmed, 9, cries in the emergency room in the hospital in Fallujah, outside Baghdad, Iraq, Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004 while being treated from gun shots to his leg. According to hospital sources, Hussam and four other family members where injured after an improvised bomb detonated in the suburbs of Fallujah and US troops started firing randomly.

Mmmm...Can you smell those fumes of liberty spreading?!

What's happened to our country?
By Brad Friedman on 10/16/2004 3:22pm PT

Once again, the Bush/Cheney Campaign demonstrated at a Rally in Oregon on Thursday their respect for their beloved U.S. Constition:

Three Medford school teachers were threatened with arrest and escorted from the event after they showed up wearing T-shirts with the slogan "Protect our civil liberties." All three said they applied for and received valid tickets from Republican headquarters in Medford.

The women said they did not intend to protest. "I wanted to see if I would be able to make a statement that I feel is important, but not offensive, in a rally for my president," said Janet Voorhies, 48, a teacher in training.

“We chose this phrase specifically because we didn't think it would be offensive or degrading or obscene," said Tania Tong, 34, a special education teacher.

Apparently "obscenity" is subjective, Ms. Tong.

A response from a Democrat News Release on the matter:

The U.S. Constitution was not available on site for comment, but expressed in a written statement support for “the freedom of speech”

Any questions?

Keep up the good work!
By Brad Friedman on 10/16/2004 2:20pm PT

I'll let you determine the reliability of Republican pollster Frank Luntz. But this is what he said in his editorial yesterday entitled "Its time for Bush to get worried":

Step by step, debate-by-debate, John Kerry has addressed and removed many remaining doubts among uncommitted voters. My own polling research after each debate suggests a rather bleak outlook for the Bush candidacy: many who still claim to be “undecided” are in fact leaning to Mr. Kerry and are about ready to commit.

Calls out CNN for what it is...
By Brad Friedman on 10/16/2004 12:34pm PT

Wow. I told you this thing was gonna get ugly. John O'Neill implodes on live TV on Thursday, and on Friday, live on CNN, The Daily Show's Jon Stewart blows up Tucker Carlson, CNN and Crossfire. Finally!

Watch it, or read the highlights below. It's funny, sad, true and incredible LIVE television!:

I don't usually like to quote this much text, but if you missed the show, you've got to read some of this that I pulled from the full transcript...

STEWART: I made a special effort to come on the show today, because I have privately, amongst my friends and also in occasional newspapers and television shows, mentioned this show as being bad. (LAUGHTER)

BEGALA: We have noticed.

STEWART: And I wanted to --- I felt that that wasn't fair and I should come here and tell you that I don't --- it's not so much that it's bad, as it's hurting America. (LAUGHTER)

CARLSON: But in its defense...

STEWART: So I wanted to come here today and say...Here's just what I wanted to tell you guys.

CARLSON: Yes.

STEWART: Stop. (LAUGHTER) Stop, stop, stop, stop hurting America.

...

STEWART: See, the thing is, we need your help. Right now, you're helping the politicians and the corporations. And we're left out there to mow our lawns.

BEGALA: By beating up on them? You just said we're too rough on them when they make mistakes.

STEWART: No, no, no, you're not too rough on them. You're part of their strategies. You are partisan, what do you call it, hacks. (LAUGHTER)

...

CARLSON: And I'll tell you. When politicians come on...

STEWART: Yes.

CARLSON: It's nice to get them to try and answer the question. And in order to do that, we try and ask them pointed questions. I want to contrast our questions with some questions you asked John Kerry recently.

STEWART: If you want to compare your show to a comedy show, you're more than welcome to. (LAUGHTER)

CARLSON: No, no, no, here's the point.

STEWART: If that's your goal.

CARLSON: It's not.

STEWART: I wouldn't aim for us. I'd aim for "Seinfeld." That's a very good show.

...

STEWART: You know, it's interesting to hear you talk about my responsibility. I didn't realize that --- and maybe this explains quite a bit...that the news organizations look to Comedy Central for their cues on integrity. (LAUGHTER) So what I would suggest is, when you talk about you're holding politicians' feet to fire, I think that's disingenuous.

...

STEWART: But my point is this. If your idea of confronting me is that I don't ask hard-hitting enough news questions, we're in bad shape, fellows. (LAUGHTER)

CARLSON: We're here to love you, not confront you...We're here to be nice.

STEWART: No, no, no, but what I'm saying is this. I'm not. I'm here to confront you, because we need help from the media and they're hurting us. And it's --- the idea is... (APPLAUSE)

BEGALA: Let me get this straight. If the indictment is --- if the indictment is --- and I have seen you say this --- that...

STEWART: Yes.

BEGALA: ... that CROSSFIRE reduces everything, as I said in the intro, to left, right, black, white.

STEWART: Yes.

BEGALA: Well, it's because, see, we're a debate show.

STEWART: No, no, no, no, that would be great.

BEGALA: It's like saying The Weather Channel reduces everything to a storm front.

STEWART: I would love to see a debate show.

BEGALA: We're 30 minutes in a 24-hour day where we have each side on, as best we can get them, and have them fight it out.

STEWART: No, no, no, no, that would be great. To do a debate would be great. But that's like saying pro wrestling is a show about athletic competition. (LAUGHTER)

CARLSON: Jon, Jon, Jon, I'm sorry. I think you're a good comedian. I think your lectures are boring.

STEWART: Yes.

CARLSON: Let me ask you a question on the news.

STEWART: Now, this is theater. It's obvious. How old are you?

CARLSON: Thirty-five.

STEWART: And you wear a bow tie. (LAUGHTER) (APPLAUSE)

CARLSON: Yes, I do. I do.

STEWART: So this is...

CARLSON: I know. I know. I know. You're a...

STEWART: So this is theater.

CARLSON: Now, let me just...

STEWART: Now, listen, I'm not suggesting that you're not a smart guy, because those are not easy to tie...But the thing is that this --- you're doing theater, when you should be doing debate, which would be great.

BEGALA: We do, do...

STEWART: It's not honest. What you do is not honest. What you do is partisan hackery. And I will tell you why I know it.

CARLSON: You had John Kerry on your show and you sniff his throne and you're accusing us of partisan hackery?

STEWART: Absolutely.

CARLSON: You've got to be kidding me. He comes on and you...

STEWART: You're on CNN. The show that leads into me is puppets making crank phone calls. (LAUGHTER) What is wrong with you? (APPLAUSE)

CARLSON: Well, I'm just saying, there's no reason for you --- when you have this marvelous opportunity not to be the guy's butt boy, to go ahead and be his butt boy. Come on. It's embarrassing.

STEWART: You know, the interesting thing I have is, you have a responsibility to the public discourse, and you fail miserably.

CARLSON: You need to get a job at a journalism school, I think.

STEWART: You need to go to one.

...

STEWART: The thing that I want to say is, when you have people on for just knee-jerk, reactionary talk...

CARLSON: Wait. I thought you were going to be funny. Come on. Be funny.

STEWART: No. No. I'm not going to be your monkey. (LAUGHTER)

BEGALA: Go ahead. Go ahead.

STEWART: I watch your show every day. And it kills me.

CARLSON: I can tell you love it.

STEWART: It's so --- oh, it's so painful to watch. (LAUGHTER)

STEWART: You know, because we need what you do. This is such a great opportunity you have here to actually get politicians off of their marketing and strategy.

CARLSON: Is this really Jon Stewart? What is this, anyway?

STEWART: Yes, it's someone who watches your show and cannot take it anymore. (LAUGHTER) I just can't.

CARLSON: What's it like to have dinner with you? It must be excruciating. Do you like lecture people like this or do you come over to their house and sit and lecture them; they're not doing the right thing, that they're missing their opportunities, evading their responsibilities?

STEWART: If I think they are. (LAUGHTER)

CARLSON: I wouldn't want to eat with you, man. That's horrible.

STEWART: I know. And you won't.

...

STEWART: But let me ask you guys, again, a question, because we talked a little bit about, you're actually doing honest debate and all that. But, after the debates, where do you guys head to right afterwards?

CARLSON: The men's room.

STEWART: Right after that?

BEGALA: Home.

STEWART: Spin alley.

BEGALA: Home.

STEWART: No, spin alley.

BEGALA: What are you talking about? You mean at these debates?

STEWART: Yes. You go to spin alley, the place called spin alley. Now, don't you think that, for people watching at home, that's kind of a drag, that you're literally walking to a place called deception lane? (LAUGHTER) Like, it's spin alley. It's --- don't you see, that's the issue I'm trying to talk to you guys...

...

CARLSON: I do think you're more fun on your show. Just my opinion.

STEWART: You know what's interesting, though? You're as big a dick on your show as you are on any show. (LAUGHTER)

Wow. And bravo, Mr. Stewart.

On LIVE Television!
By Brad Friedman on 10/15/2004 3:30pm PT

Holy-moly, don't know how many of you saw Nightline last night, but after months of whining that Swift Vet Master Shill, John O'Neill was not getting the network exposure that he thought he somehow deserved (how anyone could suggest that group didn't get enough exposure is beyond me, but anyway)...O'Neill finally got his chance last night. And, man, was it one for the record books!

O'Neill had a complete meltdown on live TV! The Nightline report began with a difficult trip up river into Vietnam to the very location of the disputed Kerry Silver Star incident to speak to the eyewitnesses in the village from that day. They remembered it well. Every witness that Nightline spoke to, none of whom seemed to know who the hell John Kerry was, corroborated every bit of the Navy's original account of the event.

The report completely destroyed O'Neill's thesis on this one particular event (the only one this Nightline report focused on), and his charge that there was no enemy fire on that day, and that Kerry shot some lone little 12 year old kid in the back as he was running away.

O'Neill was interviewed by Koppel after the report and he simply imploded with an incoherent rambling explanation of how Nightline had it all wrong, was trusting in those evil Commie's who love John Kerry (never mind that this village was hours up river into the middle of nowhere, and none of those interviewed had even heard of the man!), and how the accounts of the eye-witnesses had to be wrong because they were at odds with the Boston Globe's story on the matter.

It was amazing. O'Neill kept holding up the opened pages from the Boston Globe book, Kerry's autobiography a Kerry Biography (ed: correction made. O'Neill called it a Kerry autobiography, but he was misleading there.) and his own anti-Kerry polemic. Switching back and forth between the books (at least 5 times each!) flashing the unintelligable-on-television pages that he wanted people to read. No matter what Koppel did, he couldn't bring this guy back to his senses. It was an extraordinary thing to watch! O'Neill, in the bargain, blew any and all credibility he might have had left in a single network interview.

Unfortunately, Nightline doesn't offer free video online (they have it, but it costs money). Their "What They Saw..." report, from the eye-witnesses will have to suffice, if you even care about that story at this point. UPDATE: Full Nightline show from last night available here in Windows Media Player format! O'Neill's implosion is last 10 minutes or so of show.(Thanks, Chuck for the link!)

(Prepare now for the wingnuts to repeat, in comments, the defenses that Rush offered them this morning for last night's embarrassing affair. Ignore them. It's more smoke and mirrors...O'Neill simply blew himself up with a devastating self-inflicted wound. It was a live televised disaster. Period.)
