"Open thread" ... This reminds me of the old days ... the funny name days ... when Tony Snow was choosen to take over Snottie McClellan's propaganda machine ... yep ... "Snow Job" ... was what we called him.
And how 'bout that Foggo ... man ... someone should check these names ... anyway ... Foggo was just today indicted ... will "6 Fingers" be next ... or 7?
Oh the intrigue ...

Oops ... I forgot ... Foggo's nick name is "Dusty". Now what a perfect name for the dusty, foggy, bush regime.
He was #3 at the CIA while running a gambling whore house at the Watergate. Now there's another name for you.
Dusty was just indicted for criminal fraud and conspiracy.
It's a conspiracy theory pulling the fog over the dusty. There's another name for it, dammit.

Has anyone noticed that the MSM and politicians in general, and Cheney in particular, do not know basic elementary school definitions:
An insurgency, or insurrection, is an armed uprising, or revolt against an established civil or political authority. Persons engaging in insurgency are called insurgents, and typically engage in regular or guerrilla combat against the armed forces of the established regime, or conduct sabotage and harassment in the land in order to undermine the government's position as leader.
An insurgency differs from a resistance both in its political overtones and in the nature of the conflict: an insurgency connotes an internal struggle against a standing, established government, whereas a resistance connotes a struggle against invading or occupying foreign forces and their collaborators.
(definition link, emphasis added).
So when you hear the MSM and Cheney talking about "the insurgency" they are really talking about the resistance.
Thus, the resistance in Iraq is composed of both those in the insurgency and those in the Iraqi government who are fighting the invading and now occupying US forces.
The insurgency, at this point, is composed of the Sunni who are fighting the Shia in the current Iraqi government.
The sectarian violence is yet another violent movement based not on politics, but on religious concepts.
The terrorists are those who indiscriminately kill anyone anywhere for any reason or no reason.
The US in Iraq is being shot at by terrorists, the resistance, the sectarians, and the insurgents. And there is really no way to tell which is which ... it is an Iraqi shooting at them in all four cases so they shoot back into an unknown.
It is a four-part shooting gallery with US troops as both the target and the prize.
MESS-O-POTAMIA !! The neoCon creation. Wow, what would it be like if neoCon's were helping our enemies ... ... uh ... yeah ... they are already helping US enemies with this lunacy aren't they?

Noam Chompsky on the reason for invading Iraq:
The real reason for the invasion, surely, is that Iraq has the second largest oil reserves in the world, very cheap to exploit, and lies right at the heart of the world's major hydrocarbon resources, what the State Department 60 years ago described as "a stupendous source of strategic power." The issue is not access, but rather control (and for the energy corporations, profit). Control over these resources gives the US "critical leverage" over industrial rivals, to borrow Zbigniew Brezinski's phrase, echoing George Kennan when he was a leading planner and recognized that such control would give the US "veto power" over others. Dick Cheney observed that control over energy resources provides "tools of intimidation or blackmail" --- when in the hands of others, that is. We are too pure and noble for those considerations to apply to us, so true believers declare --- or more accurately, just presuppose, taking the point to be too obvious to articulate.
(link here, emphasis added). And on the mental conditioning of the citizenry:
Some may be so deeply indoctrinated that they cannot allow themselves to think about the reasons for the invasion or the insistence on maintaining the occupation, in one or another form.
(id.). I would like to have Bob Dylan and Noam Chompsky do a duo with this song:
Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain
(Masters of War).

Well... they also tried to teach me that Custer was a hero. So I guess it's no surprise they were pulling my leg about why we're golden. There was a problem with the term "sunny California" because Florida was The Sunshine State. I remember that. I learned it all before it was made "official"... probably a partisan dispute...
Happy Valentine's Day, Chris Hooten @ work.

Five Iraqi vets, one a captain and one an admiral, were elected to the House of Representatives last November as junior congress members.
All 5 were democrats.
I heard two of them speak eloquently yesterday. They support the resolution against the escalation of the Iraq war.
But today I heard several republican moderates speak in favor of the resolution against the escalation of the Iraq war. They were eloquent.
Good.
