“Tom has never written a letter for Abramoff,” Tom Feeney’s former Chief of Staff, Jason Roe insisted in an email to the St. Petersburg Times last year. “There is no accusation of a quid pro quo. No quid pro quo exists,” he claimed.

Congress had no say in the decision but a letter obtained by the Times shows that 10 Republican members, including Feeney, urged the department not to change certain criteria.
Among the other members who signed the letter was California Rep. John Doolittle, whose Virginia home was raided recently by FBI agents investigating fundraising by his wife as part of the Abramoff case.
In a related item, which we didn’t get to pick up late last week, Feeney’s golf junket to Scotland with Abramoff — or as he called it, a “fact-finding trip” — was paid for out of an Abramoff slush fund, according to documents obtained by Senate investigators as reported by the Sun-Sentinel…

In a 2005 Orlando Sentinel story, Feeney, an Oviedo Republican, said he was misled about who paid for the Scotland visit. In January of this year, he used stronger language, saying he was “duped and lied to” about what he thought was a fact-finding trip with Abramoff, who has pleaded guilty to corruption charges.

Feeney’s staff members have said they didn’t know who paid for the visit but that it might have been an Abramoff client.
But documents obtained by the Sentinel on Thursday from the Senate Indian Affairs Committee show that Abramoff’s personal charity, Capital Athletic Foundation, paid $150,226.32 for a “Scotland fundraiser” in 2003. That information came from a profit and loss statement that gives details of the charitable group’s tax return.

Oh come on you guys, good ole Feeney is tryin to splain to us, like wierd Al Gonzales did, that there is “fact finding trips” and there are bad trips.
Many facts, such as the slope away from the cup on 15 at St. Andrews, was not commonly well known in DC at the time.
