But I have a nit to pick. I like to compare Harri Hursti's hat to Indiana Jones, and Harri's a much cooler guy than Abramoff. He came to the US wearing a leather Indiana Jones-style hat, sat down at the table and ordered a beer. He is the consummate professional, but also quite hilarious when he chooses to be.

I think one area where the Bush administration deserves some credit is in speaking out in behalf of a Palestinian state. This remains the basis for any reasonable settlement of the age-old conflict.

I don't see Zionism as Doug E. sees it, either. It's a biblical concept, resurrected at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries and codified into political action by the Balfour Declaration (World War I). Doug, I have already smacked Jim with a wet noodle this morning. It is not our job to research people who post on political forums, nor is it our business what their political viewpoints may be, except as it relates to elections issues.

In Jim's defense, I will say that making the transition from private and opinionated person to a more publicly scrutinized role, like that with BBV, is very challenging.

We have to limit what we say in public, and that doesn't come naturally for people who are outspoken. We have to work on becoming more diplomatic (I'm still working on that, and I think Brad is a good role model in this area). What makes this more challenging is that we are always expected to be diplomatic, even when others behave obnoxiously.

Those of us who are wired to fight abuse of power also tend to fight amongst ourselves from time to time. In the office, this is rarely a problem, because BBV is staffed with strong people who know that passion and butting heads with each other from time to time is normal. Any successful corporation is the same --- people have to be able to express themselves, fight for what they advocate, and even shout at each other from time to time.

The problem is these Internet forums, which are absolutely crucial to public communication. It's feels like it's inside, personal, but in fact it's external communication.

Ordinary citizens can express themselves any way they want, but a public nonprofit like Black Box Voting cannot. That's reality, and we're all learning how to deal with it more effectively.

All I can do is take what I need and leave the rest until I can verify validity with another source and thank God there are so many sources from which to draw. I know I will have my questions answered, as that is how it works for me.

I mentioned a book I had, a book I had not opened since I bought it in 1998. Reading it now I understand why I wasn't to read it then. Nothing would have made sense to me. Now I am finding it to be a valuable source of information.
