It is interesting that someone stole an electronic voting machine (link here).

But what could this mean:

I wonder how many Diebold machines have been stolen, then cloned, so that a system can be accessed without the usual hack techniques?

In other words the system thinks the log on is being done by one of its own, but a cloned machine is actually accessing the system.

I do not see how a serial number would prevent a remote access from using a valid serial number ...

You could hook a stolen machine up to a PC and watch the dialog the electronic voting machine has with the PC.

One could reverse engineer the code in the EPROMS and disk drive ... and eventually learn how to clone the I/O to a tabulator, etc.
