The big news for the day today is that Georgia; the bastion of paperless voting, one of the last of Diebold’s paperless frontiers; may actually have a vvpat very soon. The state senate, today, voted 51-0 to require a voter verified paper audit trail. And, Cathy Cox has left her counterpart Linda Lamone, of Maryland, to fend for herself as she has now come out in support of this bill. Speaking of Maryland, Gov. Ehrlich has again spoken out, more clearly this time, against paperless voting. My! My! Will wonders never cease….

It is interesting that someone stole an electronic voting machine (link here).
But what could this mean:
"Mr. Sherbet said his employees identified the serial number of the stolen machine and have blocked it from any access to the elections system, reducing the risk of vote fraud."
I wonder how many Diebold machines have been stolen, then cloned, so that a system can be accessed without the usual hack techniques?
In other words the system thinks the log on is being done by one of its own, but a cloned machine is actually accessing the system.
I do not see how a serial number would prevent a remote access from using a valid serial number …
You could hook a stolen machine up to a PC and watch the dialog the electronic voting machine has with the PC.
One could reverse engineer the code in the EPROMS and disk drive … and eventually learn how to clone the I/O to a tabulator, etc.
Very good site. You are doing great job. Please Keep it up… .!
