New Patriot Act Provision Creates Tighter Barrier to Officials at Public Events
Tuesday, January 31, 2006
By Kelley Beaucar Vlahos
WASHINGTON — A new provision tucked into the Patriot Act bill now before Congress would allow authorities to haul demonstrators at any "special event of national significance" away to jail on felony charges if they are caught breaching a security perimeter.
Sen. Arlen Specter , R-Pa., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, sponsored the measure, which would extend the authority of the Secret Service to allow agents to arrest people who willingly or knowingly enter a restricted area at an event, even if the president or other official normally protected by the Secret Service isn't in attendance at the time.
The measure has civil libertarians protesting what they say is yet another power grab for the executive branch and one more loss for free speech.
"It's definitely problematic and chilling," said Lisa Graves, senior counsel for legislative strategy at the American Civil Liberties Union , which has written letters to the chairmen and ranking members of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees, pointing out that the provision wasn't subject to hearings or open debate.
Some conservatives say they too are troubled by the measure.
"It concerns me greatly," said Bob Barr, former U.S. prosecutor and Republican representative from Georgia. "It clearly raises serious concerns about First Amendment rights."
But not everyone agrees that rights are being trampled on by the additional provision. In fact, some say the ACLU is the problem when it comes to protecting national security.
Rocco DiPippo, a freelance writer for the conservative FrontPageMagazine.com and editor of The Autonomist Web log , said the ACLU has fought the government every step of the way over security measures following the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.
"Its opposition to Specter's reasonable proposal is simply more of the same," he said. "I can understand the concern that we should be suspicious of government, but we shouldn't adopt this mindset: 'government is evil.' This is just more hatred of (President) Bush."
Under current law, the Secret Service can arrest anyone for breaching restricted areas where the president or a protected official is or will be visiting, but the new provision would allow such arrests even after those VIPs have left the premises of any designated "special event of national significance." The provision would increase the maximum penalty for such an infraction from six months to one year in jail.
In a post-Sept. 11 world many non-political events have been designated National Special Security Events and would rise to the higher status. Examples of possible NSSEs are the Olympics or the Super Bowl. In 2004, the presidential inaugural balls and President Ronald Reagan's June funeral procession in Washington, D.C., were designated NSSEs.
According to government sources with knowledge of the legislation, Secret Service protection and law enforcement authority would extend beyond protecting a specific person, rather the event itself would become the "protectee."
Currently, non-violent demonstrators who enter restricted areas at such events previously would be arrested and charged by local law enforcement with simple trespassing, said Graves. Under the provision included in the new law, they will be charged with felonies by the Secret Service.
"It's a different consequence to people," she said.
"You are talking about giving the executive branch broader authority to create these exclusion zones which could cover broad areas and last for days [during an event ]," David Kopel, a constitutional expert with the Cato Institute, told FOXNews.com.
A spokesman at Specter's office said the senator was surprised by the clamor over the provision, which merely makes a technical change to clear up legal confusion over who has arresting authority at NSSEs. His office had no further comment on the provision. Committee Ranking Member Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., also declined comment. Republican and Democratic House Judiciary Committee leaders did not return calls for comment.
White House sources say the measure was not instigated by the administration and pointed out that it was a stand-alone bill that was rolled into the Patriot Act by Specter's office during House-Senate conference negotiations. White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told FOXNews.com that the White House would not comment on the intent of the measure, but that the president is concerned with preserving individual rights.
"President Bush is committed to protecting the American people's national security as well as their civil liberties," she said.
Secret Service representatives said the agency does not comment on pending legislation.
The Bush administration has been criticized in the past for what many say are tactics that keep protesters far away from official events and by employing stringent policies to ensure favorable audiences for the president.
Last year, three ticket-holding audience members at one of the president's Social Security events in Denver, Colo., were apprehended by a man who they said identified himself as Secret Service. The three were forced away from the event because of an anti-war sticker on the driver's car.
"[The administration] has certainly demonstrated a desire to have carefully-controlled events," said Graves.
John Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org, an Alexandria, Va.-based clearinghouse for domestic and international security information, said he "could certainly understand why the Secret Service would want that legal authority," given the enormous burden of making venues safe for VIPs today.
"However, I think many people have concluded that the way it is being used has nothing to do with protecting the president from Usama bin Laden and everything to do with suppressing dissent and making sure the protesters don't get on TV," Pike said.
Bush is not the first president to flex his authority in this area, said Kopel, who pointed out that beginning with Reagan, presidents have created a larger security bubble and greater distance between themselves and dissenters at public events. The 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States just intensified the situation, he said.
"I think the concerns about free speech in areas where the president is speaking long pre-date Bush. They were an issue in the Clinton administration, the first Bush administration and began as an issue during Reagan," Kopel said. "I do think the ACLU has legitimate concerns about the breadth of the new language and how it could be applied."
Graves points out that conservative "pro-life" groups will be the target of the new provisions, too, a scenario that could raise the concerns for those who are typically critical of the ACLU, which she said is necessarily concerned about other provisions in the bill that impinge on civil liberties.
House and Senate leaders, who return to Capitol Hill this week, are trying to renew the Patriot Act by Friday. Democrats and four Republicans in the Senate who filibustered a final vote in December after raising concerns about preserving civil liberties instituted a short-term extension of the previous bill, which was set to expire on Dec. 31.

What she did had nothing to do with the patriot act or the republicans. She deliberatly broke a rule of the House of Congress, when she attempted to hang a banner from the gallery. The House Chamber deserves respect, and not to have someone hang a banner from the gallery. I'm a veteran myself, but I still have respect for the buildings and monuments, our fellow soldiers have died for in the past 229 years. There is a limit as to what she thinks is right.

I , for one, think Mrs. Sheehan did a brave and serious thing. I would not have attempted to hang a protest sign in a session of the Congress, but I do not fault her for it. I believe she is conducting a peaceful demonstration (if she unfurled a banner at all) and as far as her attire goes, that is none of my business nor the President's. The gallery isn't just for suits and gowns. She was invited. (Sounds like "E.T." doesn't it?). I reject sniping at her over etiquette or failure of reverence for buildings. If the Neocons had the slightest things for what Americans respect and revere, we wouldn't be where we are today: engaged in an invasion. The only thing we are on the offense about is offense against our own civil liberties.

OK, so we all knew the 3rd Reich is running our country. We all knew they could do anything they want, when Bush goes on TV and says, "I'm illegally wiretapping, and whaddya think about that?" Not even hiding breaking the law anymore. Does it surprise anyone, that they will arrest the mother of a fallen solder for wearing something they didn't like? Will everyone wake up, please, from this nightmare? This is absolutely unheard of in the United States of America! They will go as far as we let them, and we're letting them go!
Freedom of speech is now against the law in the United States of America. Does everyone hear what I'm saying???

Cindy Sheehan, a mother who sacrificed a son to Bush's illegal war --- is arrested for just sitting there with the truth, while Ann Coulter advocates the assassination of a Supreme Court Justice and is cheered on. Not a single conservative even admonished her! Yet a mother who dares to do confront the president in her grief - is made to feel like a criminal. It is Cindy Sheehan's constitutional right to protest, to question authority, and to speak her mind. Why does someone who uses "extermination speak" and death for Democrats get to roam free?

Unfortunately, the Reuters link above has the picture of Cindy being led out of the chamber and she is not wearing the t-shirt. She is wearing a more formal attire and carrying what appears to be a rolled up t-shirt in her hand. So she was likely ready to display the shirt or in the act of holding it up when she was arrested.

We can do no worse than produce something better than the corrupt Fascist Republidems (1 party not 2)running this country into the ground.
These fckers have to feel the fear and anger they imposed on us with their Rhiestag fire known as 9/11. Every human right stripped away must be returned and the cancer that has been imposed on our constitution must be burned off. You bastards think you own and control the American spirit however it still breathes free at Bradblog. We can put our minds together to take back our country PEOPLE. Our Founding Fathers have enabled us to remove a government of corruption simply through active involvement. We will coral these corrupt lying murdererous bastards and put them into jail. Nothing worth doing was ever won without a fight. For example, I believe if we got the Green Party to change their name to the Working Class Party it would have instant recongnition, a broader appeal, and we wouldn't have to start from scratch.
COME ON PEOPLE WE CAN DO IT!!! Free thinking American people cannot allow these greedy losers to successfully HIJACK our government of checks and balances that was created for US and future generations.

It is acceptable to wear designer clothing, watches and accessories with cleverly infused branding, and we allow and expect our executive leaders, congressional leaders, Supreme Court justices, invited family and friends to wear patriotic flags on their lapels to such events as the State of the Union address, but somehow criminal to wear clothing which honor our citizens' greatest sacrifice.
What is inappropriate about someone quietly honoring and remembering our loved ones, killed in the US/Iraq War, during the President's State of the Union address. How more poignant, appropriate, and timely could this message be upon Ms. Sheehan's upper torso? Isn't this, in fact, the best arena and time to honor those whose lives were lost through their patriotic duty?
What is criminal about honoring the dead who gave their lives in the name of this country - who gave their lives for a noble cause, according to our president, so that others will know and share in this same cherished state of democracy and freedom as we, in these United States, are so fortunate to know. Are we ashamed of our commitment to spread democracy throughout the world - a commitment which unfortunately calls for the ultimate sacrifice?
How, may I asked, is Ms Sheehan's action disrespectful and criminal? I would think if one does not have the noblest cause for engaging our men and women in war, then one would feel desperately threatened by such emotional "branding", so to speak, and would perhaps, "legally" restrain one from such display. And you did just that, Mr. Bush and Co., with your overt contempt and disdain for the citizens of this country by the removal of Ms Sheehan from your State of the Union address.
Who would have thought that one mother could instill so much fear, in so many, with her truthful expressions of sorrow for those who have sacrificed their lives for your "noble" war?

take note of what Ed Henry said on Anderson Cooper:
"She entered the gallery wearing a shirt with some sort of anti-war slogan...they were afraid she was going to do something with it in front of the cameras".
Add this to the stories about spying on quaker peace groups, and anti-war protesters are one step away from being classified as enemy combatants.

As in the Vietnam War era - which I am now apparently reliving - getting ARRESTED in protest is making a bigger statement, and getting more publicity for the cause, and encouragement to others; she's going on the Today Show for God's sake! As Mike Malloy just said, a lot of dead folks in Nazi Germany (and Stalin's Russia) PRAYED for someone to speak up for them. GOD BLESS THIS COURAGEOUS WOMAN! END THIS WAR!

I sent a letter to the MSNBC folks condemning the phrasing of their poll question.
They're calling a shirt that simply states the number of fallen as "an anti-war slogan".
My argument: that's no more an "anti-war" statement than the crosses at Arlington Cemetary are.
She simply was honoring the number of fallen heroes; a number that of course wasn't mentioned in the president's speech, much to his shame.
And for anyone who cares to impune the character of a Gold Star mother on this blog --- yes, that's you AZ Joe --- your words have been successful at turning a life long pascifist into a 45 year old grey haired hippy who would welcome the opportunity to stand nose to nose in the street, bare knuckles with your neandrathal ass.

Excuse me Jo, but how do these codes pertain to Ms. Sheehan?
Do you know that her conduct was intended to be disorderly or disruptive?
From what I understand, her shirt displayed a corrected number (presumably US soldiers killed in Iraq). Factual information only. Her attire was nicely coordinated black and white. Her demeanor was respectful. She did not have a banner, flag, or device designed or adapted to bring into public notice a party, organization, or movement. Nor did she vocalize her opinions.
So what was her offense, other than quietly providing an unpleasant mirror this administration would have to gaze into as they surveyed the gallery?

Wow, a post mentioning Cindy Sheehan really brings out an influx of trolls of the bottom-feeder variety, doesn't it? How pathetic. There's not a single contrarian post which has any substantive arguments - instead it's all death-thrats, hate-speech and ridiculously immature attempts at 'satire' - including invocations to Sadaam Hussein.
(Incidentally, someone needs to update Godwin's law, or at least write a corrorally, to add Saddam Hussein invocations to the list of thread-killers. For Wingnuts, Hussein is definitely the new Hitler).
To all the trolls who've posted in this thread - you make me ashamed to be the same species as you, let alone the same race. If Cindy Sheehan was an invited guest of a member of Congress, which seems clear, then to have arrested her for wearing an anti-war T-shirt is an outrage. If she were hanging a banner (how would she have gotten it through security to begin with?) that's a different story, because there's a specific rule against hanging banners; though even then, the remedy would be to take the banner away, not to arrest the person trying to hang it.
I'd be willing to bet the banner-hanging story was an after-the-fact excuse for an arrest that never should have happened. Somebody high up realized a bad mistake had been made and tried to save face.
This will backfire on the White House, mark my words. Cindy Sheehan isn't your garden-variety hippie who uses gutter language and smells bad. She's a grieving mother. This isn't good for Bushie.

Cindy Sheehan was quickly released. That proves there was never a valid reason to apprehend her, and the "she was trying to hang a banner" business was another Bush administration obfuscation.
Someone wanted to protect Bushie's claim to center stage, as if the SOTU address were another one of those dog-and-pony-show speeches on an aircraft carrier or at the Naval Academy. But it was still a mistake they'll regret, because Cindy will win a lot more friends on the "Today" show, even with a twit like Katie Couric interviewing her, than she'll lose by having worn a T-shirt to a Bush speech.

For Vicky Perry and everyone: If just once, the mainstream media would focus on the core issue of free speech and not on the political ramifications, these arbitrary arrests wil stop once and for all. But it isn't happening, because the Bush administration spinmeisters can produce more bullshit in five minutes than a farmer can produce in a year.
First, it was "she was trying to hang a banner, which is against the rules at the Capitol." That didn't fly, so it became, "She knows protests aren't allowed at the Capitol." The media float these Karl Rove missives as if they're bona fide explanations for extra-legal conduct.
In this case, though, the White House will lose more than it will gain. That's why it was a mistake. Reason: Cindy Sheehan isn't your average protestor, she's 1) a mother who lost a son in Iraq, 2) a woman, and 3) a likable person. That's enough to get her on the "Today" show, enough to grab the front page of Time and Newsweek, enough to draw in people from the red states...who might otherwise reject protests against "our president" as rude.

One related point about the MSNBC poll that asked whether Cindy Sheehan's protest was legitimate or not.
Everyone knows these polls aren't scientific. But not everyone knows that Republican trolls are hired to send in votes on a non-stop basis. There's no screening, so Karl Rove's minions simply vote in favor of the administration without stopping. Sort of like Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004.
First time I checked the vote was 53-47 in Cindy Sheehan's favor. Now it's 51-49 the other way. Just like Ohio, except this time voting more than once is legal.

Dictatorship USA - Rule by the Moronic
Cindy Sheehan physically removed and jailed for having the audacity to wear a black tee shirt to the State of the Union printed with the number of US troops killed in action in Iraq to date, having lost her own son to this illegitimate invasion; one based on LIES. What have we come to this day?
Here is the State of the Union:
The American people are enslaved. Only dim wits can be in denial.
The Response to This State of the Union and shambles that have been made of our nation (Katrina, Iraq, Imperial presidency abuse of power, "healthcare" policy aimed at letting as many ill and disabled people die as possible with no conscience, lying to and killing Americans for greed and self interest, repealing and destroying public lands and slaughtering protected and other animals we love including wild burros and our marine mammals, flora and fauna; destroying forever the beauty and glory and majesty of America's natural heritage; knowingly allowing contractors to serve poison, contaminated water to our troops in Iraq will here at home our miners deaths have been forgetten. The fight to restore our nation's heart, soul, character, and vision is our fight.
Unlike the fear of loss of power by those in power illegitimately, we know the legitimate power of our democracy and the rule of law and thus, what has been done to Cindy Sheehan is the LAST STRAW!
We're gonna use the rule of law to destroy the last vestiges of the Chimp Regieme.

Okay, my typing skills suck. I'm not a secretary.
Cindy Sheehan is the face (albeit brutal face that even mom has a hard time loving) of the democrat kook fringe party. She is insane, and despite constant media coverage the only support she got was from the communist party and other fringe groups that want to destroy America. She had a huge media presence at her book signing (what was it anyway, a coloring book?) AND NO ONE SHOWED UP BECAUSE NO ONE GIVES A SHIT ABOUT WHAT SHE SAYS!
And the democrats look to her as some great hope or something (i'd say "saviour" but dems ar etraditionally hostile to any type of religious expression). Dems are too dumb to realize her antics only help republicans and hurt dems, but that's fine by me. Keep it up Cindy!
I feel her loss in Iraq, but she is not the only one who has lost a loved one. Some of us lost loved ones in the Towers on 9/11 and in the War on Terror also, and at least those lost in Afghanistan or Iraq died for SOMETHING. To have been murdered on 9/11 without any warning is a loss. At least those that have bravely fought and died in Iraq or Afghanistan took some bad guys with them.
Face it, dems are weak on defense and would rather be in power than defend America. Secretly, I think most dems want another attack to try and capitalize on it politically. Little do they realize that we all recognize dems are pussies and know they will do nothing to protect us. How is the Al queada Bill of Rights supposed to help us win the war on terror anyway. You cna try and blame (or credit) mcCain, but he's not a real republcian anyway.

Cindy Sheehan was ill-served by Woolsey in that Woolsey was quoted as saying that her getting Cindy a seat was "not political". Why not say something like "If this be treason, make the most of it." We are almost unworthy of our forefathers, who called a spade a spade.
The fact that the Capitol police had to get out the report that the arrest was due to unfurling a banner, the fact that this traveled like a virus into American homes to save the President's good reputation for as long as his miserably inadequate speech, shows the desperation of the powerful at this moment.
But power is always desperate before a stronger reality.
The thing speaks for itself: spreading "democracy" to the Middleast on the backs of our National Guard and military services is an unmitigated disaster.
The sacrifices of coalition forces have been unequal too - only yesterday, Britons protested at their war dead, but the number is much smaller than ours: 100. Cindy Sheehan's shirt spelled out ours. The plane carrying the Bob Woodruff and his cameraman spelled out another toll: dozens of wounded soldiers accompanied the reporters. It is the most grievously wounded which are airlifted out.
Sheehan has a persistence which is threatening. Should she be taken out of the picture by felony arrest or other means, someone else would, like Spartacus, rise to occupy the same place.
The suffragists at the turn of the nineteenth century embarrassed the powerful in their quest for womens' rights. A glance at the body of lawmakers in the Capitol shows that they succeeded. Martin Luther King succeeded. Sheehan and her ilk will prevail.

She was wearing a shirt with numbers on it. That is not some "wacko protest". She wasn't "breaking the rules". If she meant it as a protest, she would have revealed the shirt in the middle of Bush's speech. Instead, she sat down and took her coat off.
I repeat.
Her crime was sitting down, and taking her coat off.
.
.
I bet if she was a pro-war mother of a fallen soldier and her shirt was covered in American flags, with the number 2,242 on it and "NEVER FORGET" underneath, no big deal would have been made about it.
If you're a troll, then keep on trollin', nothing I say will change that. If you're not, I'd advise you not to shape your opinion with GOP talking points.

We have a couple of new trolls (or maybe it's "attyJimmo" or "Ricky" using new names). Regardless, what they're doing is personalizing Cindy Sheehan's arbitrary arrest, as if it becomes a question of her character or her mental state, or a political issue of left vs. right. It's none of the above, of course, and the trolls know it.
Calling Cindy Sheehan names and/or suggesting she's insane is simply a distraction from the issue at hand. Even if she were insane, which is itself an insane comment, she has every right to accept an invitation from a member of Congress to sit in on the State of the Union address. And she has every right to wear whatever she wants. If Katherine Harris can wear eye makeup that makes her look like Dracula's bride, Cindy Sheehan can wear a T-shirt with a message on it. If Ann Coulter can joke about poisoning a Supreme Court justice and not be arrested, Cindy Sheehan can wear anything she wants.
This is not about Cindy Sheehan. It isn't about George Bush, either. It's about civil liberties. Cindy Sheehan's civil liberties were violated, and I hope and pray she'll sue the bastards who did it for every penny they've received from a lobbyist.

First of all, you must be of the belief that "2,245 Dead. How many more?" is an anti-Bush statement.
IS it? Or is it an anti-WAR statement? Is it anti-anything at all? It is just a simple statement of fact.
Second, simply wearing a T-shirt with a statement must be considered “unlawful conduct” as that was what Sheehan was arrested, handcuffed, driven to a police station, booked, and detained for 4 hours for.
(For more on the “unlawful conduct” of wearing a T-shirt, see the 1971 Supreme Court decision of Cohen v. California. The SC ruled that it was unconstitutional to arrest a man who wore a "FUCK the Draft" T-shirt into a courthouse. Nuff said, even for someone without a law degree or who is in law enforcement, unless your part of a fascist government).
Which brings me to my third point. Webster’s definition of Fascism is a political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.
Whether you agree with Sheehan’s stance or not, the quashing of dissent and free speech in one fell swoop should have all of you questioning this government.

There is no draft in this country. Those who enlist in the army do so out of a desire to serve the country. Cindy Sheehan's son was one of those people. He did not fight in Iraq becuase he had to, he did because he chose to. As such, she dishonors his legacy by protesting against the war in his name. As someone who has many close friends in the middle east on behalf of this country right now I know I want everyone in this country standing behind them as they lay everything down for OUR country. It's anyone's right to protest in this country and I don't suggest taking that away; however, is Cindy really honoring her son by protesting in his name? Something tells me this is not what he would have wanted.

For the record, I think the Republican wife who was asked to leave (but not arrested or roughed up) was quite correct to call the guy an "idiot" for escorting her out.
Civil liberties are non-partisan. If a Republican wants to wear a T-shirt that says, "Iraq is a noble effort," that's perfectly O.K., at the U.S. Capitol or anywhere else. A suspicion lingers that the reason the Republican woman was asked to leave was that Cindy Sheehan had already been arrested, and the Bushies wanted to pretend that her arrest was in accordance with some regulation, which was not the case.
In other words, it was a staged event...like the speeches on aircraft carriers and like all recent State of the Union messages by presidents of both parties. Orchestrated hype...and done dare call it statesmanship, not even a Congressman's wife of the same party.

I may not personally know Casey or Cindy Sheehan; however, I can assume the same is the case for you. To pull out of Iraq now as Cindy wants would diminish the death of her son because the conflict would not be resolved and we would be back where we began. Now is not the time to argue over the validity of the war in Iraq. The decision was made. We now must finish what we started. When all is said and done we can look back and learn from any mistakes we did or didn't make. As citizens of a country with our solidiers fighting for us we must now support them and pray that as many as possible come home safe.

That's right, I don't know Casey Sheehan: which is precisely why I don't presume to know how he felt about the war, which is what you are doing.
How exactly would it "diminish" the death of her son to withdraw. This is a fallacy. He and all the soldiers, marines, and national guard in Iraq are doing their job and following orders - that in itself is honorable. It is the commander-in-chief who is at fault here. He is the one who is dishonorable to the military and the nation.
Complete and immediate withdrawal is not my prefered strategy. It is a valid concern for many none the less. To suggest that those who call for it are "hurting our resolve" or some such nonsense is counter-common sense. We live in a free country, or did you forget.
This is exactly the time to argue the validity of the war. The very basis for the war is illegal. There is no basis for us ever invading the country - escalating the violence further does not make us any safer.
A decision was made, based on falsehood and distortion of facts. To continue on the same path based on those grounds is nothing short of foolish.
"We must finish what we started". What does that mean, we must press on until every Iraqi is dead?
"Look back and learn from any mistakes we did or didn't make." If it isn't clear to you by now what mistakes have been made, kindly eject yourself from this debate. This story has been told over and over throughout history. The ending is never pretty.
Supporting our troops and demanding that the Commander-in-Chief change his failed policy go hand in hand. The president is unfit to lead the nation, let alone the strongest military in the world.

Off topic, but BREAKING NEWS... Arlen Specter threatens to subpoena oil execs to testify before Congress since they have refused to appear at the request of Congress. Specter better get them subpoenaed, sworn under oath and forced to testify. Sure, they'll lie, but at least it will be under oath and for all to see on CSpan.

For Monkey: We are pulling out of Iraq in 2006. The phased withdrawal has already been agreed upon. If that means that Cindy Sheehan's son died in vain, your gripe should be with Bush, not with his political opponents.
Somehow, though, I expect that Bush will get credit in the media for "staying the course" until Iraq was capable of running its own affairs. And, "liberals" will get blamed for wanting the withdrawal to have happened earlier...like before it became clear to the world that the elections in Iraq had simply left the government in the hands of Muslim clerics.
Make no mistake, Monkey. Our policy in Iraq has been an abject failure. As in...it didn't work. The tipoff came when after the last election, when Iraq looked like Iran without an ayatollah (and just wait, they'll have one soon). We've been there for almost three years, supposedly creating a model democracy, and we wound up with a theocracy.
So...you tell me if Cindy Sheehan's son died in vain.

#160 you apparently are watching tweety too much...those that enlist do so (especially the guard) to serve and protect they're homes....not fight in Iraq! Some just to feed their families since the good jobs were tax breaked overseas. Some did sign up after 9-11 to fight Osama Bin-Forgotten, but alas, the asses in power chose to fight their preplanned NCAP plan to take over control of the middle east oil. (Wanted dead or alive really meant wanted oil only.).
So you see they didn't sign up to fight bush's war of lies, stop repeating your lie! A true leader would never send their armies into war unprepared to die for lies and as citizens it's our duty to protect the constitution against corporate greedy liars like those in power now. The Bush administration is operating under the goal of eliminating terrorism in the world. Whether you agree with this stance or not, there is no arguing that this is what his goal is. Following 9/11/01, Afghanistan became one of the targets in this mission because of its affiliation with Osama bin Ladin. We are currently still occupying Afghanistan because of violence still present in the area. To leave now would be an irresponsible act on our part towards the Afghani citizens.
Similarly you can look at the situation in Iraq. We entered Iraq as part of the war against terrorism. While the arguments presented for entering this war may not satisfy you completely (never will everyone be satisfied by every decision someone in power makes) there is no arguing that Sadaam Hussein was in fact terrorizing a majority of the population he was leading. Whether you feel this was something the United States should take on does not matter at this point as it has already been done. Due to the insurgencies in Iraq currently, our withdrawal would lead to further problems in Iraq just as happened following Desert Storm. While continuing the war may not make us any safer at this point here in America, as the most powerful country in the world it is our responsibility to the citizens of Iraq to finish what we started. This is a global society that we live in and we should not abandon our fellow citizens of the world.
Each American soldier who has fought in Iraq is also fighting for the freedoms of the Iraqi people. To withdraw from Iraq and risk the possibility of the Iraqi’s once again loosing this freedom would diminish the death of any soldiers that fought and died in Iraq. In America we have the privilege of being given the freedoms we have. The rest of the world should have the same chance that we have.
Blatant agreement or disagreement on the basis of the person leading the country is an abuse of our freedoms. We need to use this freedom to carefully analyze the situation and not blatantly speak out against a person because we are from a different party. The cause you fight for will be much more supported if you remain reasonable throughout your efforts instead of jumping off the deepend.

Kool-Aid drinkers, pot-smokers, long-haireds and other dregs of society,
In case you didn't hear, a Republican Congressman's wife was wearing a pro-war shirt and she was asked to leave the speech also. It has nothing to do with being anti-Bush, it's simply against the rules to wear anything of the sort. I'm certain if I wore a shirt to Clitnon's speech that said "One stained dress - how many more?", I'd be thrown out too.
She said she took her coat off because she was hot walking up the stairs from the bathroom. Why did she pee with her coat on? Why did she have to stand up to take her coat off? To make a statement. She's said in the past that civil disobedience is her next step. This was an act of it.
Open your eyes people. Cindy's time is almost up. There is a time limit for attention whoring, and she id about two arrests away from it.

Cindy will face those who apprehended her in court, because she has filed suit against the government. Multiple claims seem available, amazingly considering the relative brevity of the incident. Denial of civil rights, denial of equal treatment under the law, false arrest, abusive treatment are four that come to mind immediately.
The full truth will emerge in court concerning any matters now in dispute. I believe Cindy Sheehan tells the truth. Those (such as Jim in Iowa and other right-wing trolls) who don't believe her should attend the trial and find out how democracy really works. Warning: yelling out things like "Send her to Gitmo!" won't be tolerated.

I am very concerned about this quote in the article by the Washington Post.
"She was also vocal, said U.S. Capitol Police Chief Terrance W. Gainer, and after she ignored instructions to close her jacket and quiet down, she was led out and arrested. Demonstrating in the House gallery is prohibited."
According to Cindy (whom I trust a thousand times more than Terrance W. Gainer) she was NOT instructed to close her jacket and she was NOT vocal.
There must have been witnesses near her. They must be contacted IMMEDIATELY and a press conference held. If the U.S. Capitol Police Chief LIED, then he must be fired IMMEDIATELY. If he made his statement based on a report from an officer that he did not verify, then the OFFICER must be FIRED and the Chief reprimanded for making the public statement.
Either way, when new information is out, it must be SWARMED to the WaPo (an evil piece of &^%$ paper in the hands of Bush appeasers).
This is the BIG LIE that was quickly put out to the press to try to make this story go away.
WE MUST FIGHT THE BIG LIE EVERY TIME THEY TELL IT!!! EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!
This was done, because Rove didn't want the chance that a TV camera might show Cindy (with or without a shirt) when Bush talked about the sacrifices of the parents of dead soldiers.
WE MUST FIGHT EVERY TIME THEY TRY TO MANIPULATE THE MEDIA (who so very willingly goes along) TO SUIT THEIR GOALS! EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!
And start wearing the number. It's a first step.

You believe her because you are a tinfoil hat wearing kook who believes what you want to believe. Get your news from many sources instead of just left wing blogs. You believe her because you are an idiot who will believe whatever fits your narrow view and is bad towards President Bush. Hell, even republicans who "hated" clinton were at least sensible for the most part. Coming up with criticisms of the sex pervert criminal was easy- he and his gang opened themselves to many, many scandals and the democrats then were all too willing to sweep them under the rug, now they demand accountablity.
Okay, let's have accountabilty. Let Cindy have her day in court, lose and pay a fine. Let's have hearings on Bush spying on foreign terrorists and you can show you would rather have the terrorists win so you can rail on President Bush than have him defeat them so he can claim victory. You know it. Now admit it. Osama, Cindy adn the other democrats use the same speechwriter and that is shameful.
Let Abramoff testify in court and if a few dirty republicans go to jail, so be it. But let's also put harry reid in jail for hsi illegal dealings that enrich him and his family. Let's see what is in the full barrett Report, and not the parts that democrats want us to see only.
You want accountabilty, fine, so do I. But if you shine the bright light of truth into politics you will see many more cockroaches and rats in the demcorat party than in the republcian party.

Monkey:
If you want to argue that the Bush administration's goal is to eliminate terrorism, the onus is on you to prove that. From my perspective, Bush let the biggest terrorists, Bin Laden, Zawahiri, and the rest of Al Qaeda get away with their crimes when he went on an adventure in Iraq, which a) did not have weapons of mass destruction, and certainly not ones that they could deploy in 45 minutes (if it did, Israel would have taken them out much sooner), b) was not an imminent threat to its neighbors (if they were, Iran and Saudi Arabia would have acted much sooner), and c) had no formal connections to Al Qaeda (but I'm sure they do now, thanks George).
You can say that entering Iraq was a part of the "war on terrorism" all you want, but reality does not agree with you. We were lied into a war, as shown by the downing street minutes, which was a part of the plan put forth by neoconservative ideologues dating back to the early 90's.
Preemptive invasion was never a sane strategy in dealing with Iraq. But it was done. The ground war was won quickly, and we took Saddam out of power. We should have immediately withdrawn after that, and put in an international peacekeeping force. We didn't do that. We handed sovereignty over to the Iraqis and they drafted a constitution. We should have withdrawn our military and corporate interests immediately after that. We didn't. 2,245 dead americans, 16,000 wounded, and 30,000 dead civilians later and Iraq's oil production is lower than it was pre-war, their infrastructure is still destroyed, the Iraqi army is still disloyal and undertrained, and there's no end in sight. Again I ask you, what is our goal in staying until "we finish the job"? does that mean we don't leave until every last Iraqi is dead?
The fight for Iraqi's freedom ended when Saddam was toppled. They are a democracy now, with all the elections and corruption that go along with it. Freedom is theirs to lose. It's time for us to get out.
The most realistic and pragmatic thing we can do now is follow John Murtha's plan. Redeploy to neighboring allied countries. Get our people out and work on humanitarian aid. Use diplomacy to compel insurgents to drop their arms, take part in government, and keep terrorists out.
I am from no party. My criticism comes from my opposition to past and present policies. This is not the time in history to "go along to get along".
Dirk Diggler:
Putting aside your nonsensical approach to this argument, the fact is that one person was asked to leave, while another was forced out with her hands behind her back, handcuffed, brought to jail and questioned for an hour.

For any "middle of the road'ers who might have wandered into BradBlog... (because I wouldn't waste my time talking to AZ Joe or Jim in Iowa)...
1. The President of the United States wiretapped American Citizens (perhaps tens of thousands of them) without a court order, even though there was a TOTALLY SECRET COURT (FISA) that he could have gone to and they have given permission in every single case but 4 (of thousands). This should frighten you. Oh, and if they say they couldn't do that because it was an emergency, well, that is a LIE, because there is a provision that allows them to start the wiretap immediately and then apply for the court order AFTER THE FACT within 72 hours.
There are only two possible reasons why the President would allow these wiretaps to be performed without the legally required court permissions: Either, he is totally insane and believes himself to be a KING who is above the law. (Hmmm, I recall the Republicans talking a lot about "nobody is above the law, even the most simple and basic laws" when they put Clinton on trial.) or, the wiretaps were being performed on members of congress, the media, and other ordinary citizens and the President and his Republican Administration knew that the court would deny them these wiretaps.
There is no other reason that comes to mind for ignoring a legal method of doing what he wanted.
2. 100% of the money Abramoff gave to members of congress went to Republicans. 100%. Were some of Abramoff's clients Indian Tribes that had traditionally donated to Democrats? Yup. Did they continue to donate to Democrats even as they hired Abramoff (who turned out to be ripping them off)? Yup? Did Abramoff every ask them to? Nope. Did he ever parlay those donations into any positive benefit for himself or his clients like he did the donations that went 100% to the Republicans and to Bush? Nope. The Abramoff Scandal is 100% a Republican scandal.
3. Our "reason" for going into Iraq was never "to fight the war on terror" until after the WMD's that were promised were not found. Not just "suspected" WMD, but "absolutely established" WMD's. Why were they not discovered? Because they were not there? Why did we THINK they were there? Because the Pentagon's Office of Special Plans had killed every piece of intelligence that said they were probably not there and replaced it with false intelligence that said they definitely were. We were SPUN into this war and they continue to spin the war. Was Saddam a dictator? Yup. Was his dictatorship holding a factional nation of three major ethnic groups together under his dictatorial reign? Yup? Was getting rid of him without breaking the country up into three separate chunks an incredibly stupid idea? You know it. BTW, had the American People been told that we were going into Iraq to "remove a horrible dictator and free the people of Iraq so they can have Democracy" then the polls would have been 80% opposed and 20% in favor and the congress would NEVER have gone along. That is why the "mushroom clouds" and "tons of toxic weapons" and WMDs and supporting terrorists and yellowcake from Niger had to be given as the excuse. The war in Iraq was a spun lie that squandered the support that the USA had to take down the Taliban in Afghanastan and attempt to capture OBL. We went from being supported in the world with a massive amount of "spendable capital" to morally bankrupt on the world stage. Good going Mr. President, that will make the global war on terror MUCH easier to win.
Republicans only see what they are told to see. It's really sad. And, even if I thought that Republicans were lazy, non-intellectual, single-minded, bigoted, and resentful sloths not worthy of air, I wouldn't use it an my reply to one of their arguments --- I would just keep it in mind as I communicate with them (or, better yet, ignore them).
For those Republicans who still consider themselves to be "open minded" and "thinking" I invite you into dialogue about what your current leaders in Congress and the President are doing to your party of "fiscal conservatism" and "compassionate conservatism." And if you are a member of the middle class, I ask you to consider the effect of this borrow-and-spend Administration with their Republican Congressional enablers on our future national security as our debt spirals out of control.
I don't believe that Democrats are perfect, but for heaven's sake, if you can't see the damage that the Republicans in power are doing to our country, then you are not looking very closely.

#186 Monkey,
"The Bush administration is operating under the goal of eliminating terrorism in the world. Whether you agree with this stance or not, there is no arguing that this is what his goal is"
Oh, really!?
Honestly, I don't know where to begin. You know, Monkey, you actually don't sound like a bad guy. But how can you possibly be that ill-informed??
Do you seriously not know that the invading of Iraq & the decimating of that country, coupled with our not securing the borders or the abandoned weapons (among other things that were either mistakes or, worse, calculated chaos), has resulted in an unprecedented increase in terrorist numbers?
So if this is his goal, damn, he's just "doin' a heck of a job", ain't he!
"...This is a global society that we live in and we should not abandon our fellow citizens of the world..."
That is a noble sentiment & I would be thrilled if my government actually acted in accordance with it instead of supporting & arming dictators & implementing policies that DO HARM to thousands! Like the UN population fund for which we cut 100% of the funding! And that's just ONE EXAMPLE! Christ! Look it up! If you're sincere, Monkey, and you sound like you are, do some research & be horrified at what you find.
"...Blatant agreement or disagreement on the basis of the person leading the country is an abuse of our freedoms."
For the zillionth time...it's not about bush. Yes, he's an easy target for humor & God knows we need the comic relief. He's also not a good man and certainly not the good christian he pretends to be, but he is just a pawn in a much bigger game run by much bigger players.
But the truth is, the buck stops at the presidency.
And citizens have the DUTY, by the way--not unlike soldiers ordered to commit atrocities--when they know their government is malfunctioning & behaving criminally, TO HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE:
"...But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.--"

You cna try and blame (or credit) mcCain, but he's not a real republcian anyway.[/quote]
Let's start with logical fallacy #1. Ad Hominem. So Cindy Shehan is unattractive, and therefor not covered by the same rights (those that are disappearing right before our eyes) that were set up to protect people just like her? I see. So if that is the case, why is "Adams Apple" Annie C still allowed to run his/her mouth? (See, I got a shot in there, but.. I made a point with mine.)
Point #2. As I see it she has quite a bit of support right here and many other places, however reich-wingers like you try to silence it. It's a shame that you people are afraid of a mother who lost a son. Truly a dangerous animal, don't get me wrong.. but she isn't packing heat.. just the truth.
Point #3. The old Ad hominem attack again. Her book.. coloring book.. HAHA Oh, that is just hilarious. Did you think that one up on your own, or was it printed on the back of your new Rush Limbaugh decoder ring?
Point #4. Her actions hurt dems? I wonder how many people watching last night, didn't know the number of young men and women that were lost to this Bushco sponsored oil war.. and now have something to think about. OR.. even pray about? How's that for religious expression?
Point #5. Your fake empathy betrays you. You feel nothing. You are a reich winger that is in lock step with an evil administration. You haven't the ability to FEEL.
Just what is it that those who died in Iraq and Afghanistan died for? Can you point it out? You cannot.. The reason being, there is no reason for them to have died. They died in vain and their memories and sacrifices are being bastardized by the likes of you and your fuhrer.
Point #6. Dems are weak.. I'll give you that, but it isn't "on defense" as you mistakingly put it. Whose watch was it when 9/11 occurred?
The Dems need to grow a bit of a back bone and forget about what "other people think".. they need to be more like Cindy and speak out and do something about this travesty.
I find it ironic how you condemn the dems for being weak, and then condemn Cindy for her strength. How does that work, exactly?
Point #7. Al queada Bill of Rights? WOW, you really are around the bend. The Bill of Rights are what they are and where they are to protect the American Citizens. Remember them? You don't? Oh.. well there is mention of them at the beginning of The Constitution. It starts out, "We the PEOPLE..." That refers to the citizens of this once great country. It doesn't refer to the government, it doesn't refer to the President.. be he legitimate or not. It refers to those that really DO run the country... or at least those who are supposed to. "A government FOR the people, OF the people, BY the people" Remember that one? Not "FOR the oil companies and other big businesses"

For Jim in Iowa: You don't read very well, do you? There is nothing in any of my posts that says anything positive about the Democrat party. I'm an Independent and don't like either party. If you ever read my posts, instead of just ranting at them, you might know that.
I don't need you to tell me what I believe. You're obviously passionate, but you make the same errors other trolls make...you impute beliefs to people who have never articulated those beliefs (for example, in re abortion). You make absurd third-party associations that have nothing to do with a given issue (such as Teddy Kennedy and Chappaquiddick...that was 37 years ago). You insult people who are smarter and better informed that you, by crude ad hominem attack.
I'm an "idiot?" Guess I'd better pull those five books I've had published off the shelves, then. I get all my information from left-wing blogs? What in God's name makes you assume that? I've read three books since Jan. 1, cover to cover...Doris Kearns Goodwin's "Team of Rivals," "Lincoln's Wrath" (about newspaper suppression during the Civil War, and Stephen Ambrose's "To America." And I read at least one newspaper, cover to cover, seven days a week.
How many books have you read since Jan. 1? You know, Jim, I'd like to ignore you altogether, but when someone starts name-calling without any justification whatsoever, I draw a line. Good night.

I was recently given an old documentary made in 1974 call 'Hearts and Minds. This doco was a chronical of the Viet Nam 'war' Police Action. I was so stunned after I watched it. I was not one of those that followed that war. I was not what I consider 'awake' during that time. I was happy living my life, working, ala...Wonderland. This documentary really made me understand why there are Viet Nam vets that are so supportive of this war. Many young men were interviewed for the film and they talked about the excitement of watching the bombs explode, never thinking much about the people that were dying as a result of their deeds. When I see Viet Nam holding their signs in support of the killing in Iraq, I now have some understanding of their mindset. I needed to see this film. My Father was a WW11 Vet, greatly opposed to Viet Nam. He could see through the bs in the 60's and didn't want his only son to die there.
My brother came home, my husband's brother did not, he died in the Tet Offensive, Westmoreland's idea of making himself a 'resounding victory', in 1968. Viet Nam was a contrived war just like Iraq, using the Gulf of Tonkin 'invasion' as it's pretex. I know many here know this, but I have not really studied Viet Nam. I now understand the great division between the Veterans for Peace and those that love war. Those that love war will sacrifice their children to lies, they have not yet risen to the level of understanding of the part they played in history. Perhaps their ego's will not let them come face to face with themselves. People are very complicated and each one of us 'arrives' on our own time schedule. Many will repeat the mistakes they have made, over and over again. Many cannot utter the words, 'I was wrong', 'I made a mistake'. I became free the day I gave myself permission to change my mind. M4

First of all, I don't particularly like Kool-Aid --- it's really nothing but sugar. Makes you feel good for a second (like posting some pathetic attack blog comment) but has no nutritional value.
Second, I agree with you that Mr. Kennedy's actions are unworthy of respect, but that doesn't make Laura's any better, and has absolutely no bearing on any arguments at all.
Finally, I don't recall having killed anybody lately and surely not millions of babies every year. BTW, where the heck do you get that number? Are you implying that even if I did support the practice of abortion (which I have never mentioned on this board, so you can't possibly know where I stand on that issue) it would somehow mean that I am personally responsible for every abortion? If that were the case, then anybody who supports the war in Iraq must be responsible for every death (American, coalition, or Iraqi) that occurs.
Your rhetoric is as weak as your cognitive skills, which are about as absent as your tact and communications ability.

My first time here, and my, what an interesting group. It seems we have both extremes present which can make for good debating, or not so good debating. Or simple baiting. And a bit of the "M" word, as well.
I think that the national debate has not captured what is really going on. We have one side arguing for the removal of tyrants, nuclear safeguarding, spreading democracy, and so on. The other side is arguing blood for oil, lies, etc. Both sides are guilty of looking at the world with "short-term" glasses.
The long term view requires stepping back and looking at what is happening in terms of decades, of centuries. This has nothing to do with saving Iraqis or lying for corporate cronies. This is about creating a dynasty that will change the course of history and render the players historical figures forever on par with Caesar, Alexander, Napoleon, and yes, even Hitler. As with "MeinKampf" or "Letters from a Birminham Jail", there are writings from the major players going back decades that describe exactly what they have in mind. They intend to create a world run by America.
The first step in this is to secure the remaining oil reserves by controlling land areas. We will never fully leave Iraq. We are constructing bases there and we'll stay for decades. The land has been seeded with enormous amounts of uranium. That, I think, is just a side "bonus" in that it rids the land of inhabitants and makes it easier to control. (In ten years, that land will be uninhabitable).
As this is the end of an age (the age of oil), it is the perfect time to sieze world power. The remaining steps include completion of the securing of the remaining fuel to economically control the world, total military domination with nuclear weapons (we have restarted a mini-nuke program), deter the rise of a global challenger, seize space as a military objective, and consolidate military and economic control into a "Pax Americana" for the foreseeable future.
2000 dead is a speed bump compared to these kinds of plans. Liberation of an oppressed people is nothing more than a means to an end. Admirable, yes, but the driving force? No.
Will protests make anything happen? Not likely. The men driving this road aren't really interested in what we think. They have bigger fish to fry. Will we be liberating the next "most oppressed people" found in several African nations? No. Will we allow Iran nukes? No. Will we abide by the nuclear non-proliferation treaty that tries to eradicate these weapons? No. The only things that will happen in America are those that further the plans for reaching global domination.
Am I a conspiracist? Before you answer that, read the writings of Cheney, Rumsfield, Wolfowitz, and about a dozen other members of the administration. But frankly, not George Bush. Bush is not the problem. He's the patsy, the frontman, and eventually the fall guy if needed. Read Breszinski's "Grand Chessboard" for a blueprint. After you look at all the written evidence for yourself, I'd be interested in knowing how one can come to any other conclusion.

Doug, you are too damn right.
Reading the PNAC blueprint is just the latest "strategy document" for activities that have been under way since the 1950's. BTW, watch WHY WE FIGHT for a real education about the geo-political and economic forces at work.
BTW, you hit the nail on the head about Bush being the "fall guy." Just today Grover Norquist turned on him. This is all designed to make uninformed Democrats and those few remaining "thinking Republicans" believe that we have "won" when Bush/Cheney and company are no longer in power, whether that happens in early 2007 or early 2009.
But you are right that the next successor will be just another stooge for the global domination desires of the PNAC.
Of course, even those who seek global domination can be undone by a popular revolution at home --- history has shown us that! So all hope is not lost.
But you are right, that we must study history and the historic writings of our enemies (who are unfortunately in control of our government) if we are to know how the battle will be fought.

#211 BVAC, where, exactly, does the logic break down? Remember, my friend, that I have gotten my information directly from the writings of the administration personnel. This analysis is not my observations; this is directly out of their mouths (or pens, as the case may be.)
I do realize that understanding this argument requires a basic knowledge of history, politics, and an in-depth knowledge of the people involved. If you have the background and education that allows you to discuss the argument on the table, then by all means, tell me where the logic breaks down.
But if you have no knowledge of the documents that I refer to, please don't bother me with inane babble. I am quite interested in an informed discussion with intelligent members of either party. I'm not interested in mental masterbation.

#212 We agree on quite a few things, Charlie. I see most of what has been transpiring as supporting the aforementioned aspirations. Wiretapping - internal dissent is the source of most of the downfall of leaders (et tu, Brute?) and must be monitored. The constitution presents a problem with this, but I believe they think bending of the constitution is forgivable as long as the goal is virtuous. Pax Americana, as run by them, appears to be the virtuous goal. Many americans agree with that although they are not aware of the true goal. They think its terrorism.
The Supreme Court is another coup for this group. I think we will see an allowance of governmental powers far exceeding reasonable powers as a direct result of these 2 appointments. Is it insurance that their plans will not be derailed by "laws that were written for another time".

I mistakenly (or perhaps not) thought you were advocating the dynastic imperial takeover of the world by the US military. If I am mistaken, sorry. There's lots of trolls around here lately. Another Doug by a different email address made an ignorant remark in another thread.
Anyway, yes, I understand the current forces behind the slow global takeover of the economy, resources, and land. It has nothing to do with the opportune timing the end of the petrol age offers, it's been called into play decades.. centuries even, ago. Bush is a front man, but so too is Cheney. He's the thug that "makes things happen" but he's not the boss.
To say that it's a plot hatched by a little cabal of evil people bent on taking over the world puts a glossy coating on it to distract from the more complex matter- that society has been creeping down this path for so long, and it's so ingrained in our culture, that it's no longer a matter of taking out "a few bad apples."

#215 Steve, I so wish you were right. However, I believe the men in charge have thought that one through. We now have paperless voting machines. I have written some simple programs and it is quite simple to put one thing on the screen and another in the database. Our final tallies no longer match the exit polls. The exit polls have been dead nuts on for 200 years. We even cited the exit polls as proof of election fraud in Chechnya (?). Those exit polls are not wrong. The machines are. It doesn't matter who runs. If they can skew the pre-election polls about 5 points, and they can skew the results 5 points, they can control any election. We would need about a 70/30 cut to beat this system. We can't get 70/30 because the base, the Christian groups that are aligned with these men see the American global dynasty as a return to the rule of God. They will not be swayed by simple arguments of constitution or law because they are answering to a higher power. The end justifies the means for them. As such, we will not be able to vote them out of power.

#217 BVAC, great response, thank you. You're quite right that this is not a small group of evil men and also that this has been building for decades.
However, I do think that there are men that have the desire and the resources to change history. That has always been true, and it is true today. And strangely, I actually think that they are doing it from a position of benevolence. I think they believe that they are the men most qualified to take the reins. In 200 years, given the rate of space exploration and technology, it is reasonable to think that the entire earth will be under the control (not iron thumb) of something. The preamble to "Rebuilding America's Defenses" states the reason for taking these steps is to project America's principles and interests around the world.
You piqued my interest when you said that Cheney was the hitman but not the boss. Who is the boss?

I just tell them I'm a Vet and I earned the right to do what I want. I would die first before I took it off. Stand-up for your rights. To many people just sit on there hands and keep quiet. Don't be afraid to show how you feel. Blogs are an easy place to show how you feel. Try something harder like doing it in public. Put up a sign in your yard, in your cars everywhere you can. In a real sense, though, they embody the contradiction of chickenhawks like Bush and Cheney. Real men don't claim that other men's wives are yearning for their sex organs; likewise, real men don't dodge the draft and then send others to die so that they can look and sound tough.
For "men" like AZJoe, Bush and Cheney symbolize the power of contrived manhood. They give legitimacy to the act of sounding like virile men without acting virile. A marriage made in heaven.

When you are able to give birth, you can talk about convenience. Until that time, keep your brain in your pants and it will be none of your concern.
The idiot is not murdering for a noble cause, I assure you. His murderous spree is for monetary gain. He is able to line his and his corporate buddies' pockets with every young man or woman that dies. This has nothing to do with honor or valor.. your hero has none. He is a feckless thug, nothing more. He is a coward, who by dumb luck and cronyism stole America from THE PEOPLE.
You are sadly mistaken if you think that the majority agree with you or him. The unfortunate truth is that those in the real majority realize that those that are "in charge" will lie, cheat and steal to keep the power they have obtained.. and they feel helpless to do anything about it.
Grow up, get an education and then come back and discuss the way things are in the real world. You have no credibility here and you are wasting valuable bandwidth with your parroted reich-wing talking points.

Until the early '70s, abortion was illegal in the United States. It might become illegal again, and/or it might be severely restricted. Possibly Roe v. Wade will be overturned.
Now, the argument is advanced here (not really advanced, just bellowed) that a moral equivalency hasn't yet been reached between aborted fetuses and deaths in Iraq, i.e., until the death toll in Iraq equates with the unborn babies who have been aborted (an unknown total), the occupation may continue.
Does this mean that before abortion became legal, the war in Iraq would have been wrong...but now that abortion is legal, the war in Iraq is O.K.?
In fact, that's what Mr. Diggler is saying. Somehow I think he's wrong there.

:plain: Hey Brad nice blog. How can you take anything coming out of DC seriously? They are all on the take or have a personal angle. You and all your devotees are wasting your time.
I used to believe in this country but the last five years have laid bare the cesspool that Washington really is. If you think its just the republicans, you need to stop fantasizing.
Its time for a total change.

For John Smith: Washington is a cesspool, and neither party is clean. But when one party controls the executive branch and both halves of the legislative branch, that party must accept the lion's share of the blame for the foul aroma.
A third party is needed, because Democrats have tried to become more like Republicans in order to retain their franchise. In part this is because they've been dumb enough to listen to Republican advice ("You'll never win an election if you're the party of Michael Moore," "Left-wing extremists are killng you," "Howard Dean is way out of the mainstream," etc. etc.). As if in the current political environment, any Republican could actually have a Democrat's interests at heart.
Imagine Bill Cowher taking advice from Mike Holmgren in devising his game plan for the Super Bowl. That's how dumb the Democratic party is.

Cindy Sheehan lost her son in Iraq. That is tragic and I sympathize with her. No parent should have to go through that.
Her subsequent actions border on treason and dishonor her nation and her son's sacrifice.
She should join Hugo Chavez's cabinet as he has recognized her political acumen.

:crazy In the beginning, I could feel a certain amount of sympathy for Ms. Sheehan. She was in great pain and grieving for her son. She was arrested again in new York . I now feel, after seeing the video of her and some of her cohorts being loaded into the paddy wagon, that this woman is REALLY unbalanced. She is just a full fledged (cukoo) whacko. Someone should really deliver her to Bellevue, Because she's just absolutely off her meds . She's now beginning to remind me of the woman who tried to assasinate President Gerald Ford. (Squeaky Fromm),Of the Charles Manson crazed gang,), How is it we hold these insane people up as Hero's . She is just another lunatic.

In the beginning, I could feel a certain amount of empathy for Ms. Sheehan. Her behavior was understandable , to a point, I suppose, because she was hurting, and her grief was great. The sympathy I felt has worn thin. Her most recent arrest, In New York, as she was being lifted into the paddy wagon along with her cohorts, shows how insane this woman is . She really needs to be dropped off at bellevue. She is certainly off her meds. She is just crazy ,(cukoo), at this point. She is reminding me more and more of Lynette (SQUEAKY) Fromm, the Nutcake that tried to take out President Gerald Ford. If you follow her closely, their are many similarities. Why is it, we hold these lunatics up as heros. Rather than setting her up as a formidable activist to be admired, why is it so hard to see that this woman is a full fledged mental case in serious need of a little help from the men in white coats. People need to stop encouraging this poor sick woman to continue in the sickness that has so encompassed her brain.
