DNC: ‘Bush Administration Owes Apology Over Assault on Voting Rights’

Troops 'shouldn't have to fight for their right to vote when they come home'

Share article:

Following up on our earlier piece, praising the DNC for their media release concerning vote caging issues, we find this superb and scathing condemnation also released today by the DNC, headlined “Bush Administration Owes Apology Over Assault on Voting Rights”…

Donna Brazile, Chair of the Democratic National Committee’s Voting Rights Institute, joined the Chairs of the DNC’s Black Caucus, Hispanic Caucus, AAPI Caucus, Seniors Coordinating Council, and Native American Coordinating Council in condemning the Bush Administration’s assault on voting rights and its politicization of the Department of Justice.

“The assault on voting rights is easily the most disturbing and inexcusable example of the Bush Administration’s unbridled willingness to use the American government for the benefit of narrow partisan interests. The same voters targeted by these Republican efforts, whether Hispanic, African American, AAPI, or Native American, are all among those serving with honor in Iraq and Afghanistan. They shouldn’t have to fight for their right to vote when they come home.

“The list of tools that Republicans have used to enhance their electoral prospects at the expense of our right to vote reads like a shameful litany from past eras: restricting access to voter registration, improper attempts to purge voter lists, the use of voting machines that leave no verifiable audit trails, criminal phone jamming schemes, discriminatory voter ID laws, inconsistently administered elections, and now we find out, politicizing the Department of Justice. These Republican schemes are not just undemocratic, they’re un-American. The time has come for Republicans to stop playing politics with our fundamental right to vote, and for President Bush, Mitch McConnell, and the Republican Party to apologize to the American people.”

The release goes on to list a panoply of Republican voter disenfranchisement efforts from FL to WI to OH to CO to NV and more. Kudos. Had they been as aggressive in their report on Ohio after the ’04 Election, we might not be fighting our way out of the nightmare we now find ourselves in.

(Listen to my ’05 radio interview with the report’s Exec. Dir. Vincent Frey [MP3] admitting that they didn’t find any fraud in Ohio, essentially, because they didn’t look for any!)

And sadly, as Democrats seem destined to shoot themselves in the face with ill-conceived Election Reform bills in both the House and Senate, the nightmare will likely continue no matter what. As we’ve tried to explain to DNC folks many times, you can fight to ensure every legal voter who wants to vote gets to vote, but if those aren’t counted correctly, it ultimately means absolutely nothing.

Nonetheless, we’ll keep our eyes forward for the moment, and hope the DNC continues to realize the breadth of what has been going on, and what will continue to go on unless they do something about it and finally stand up once and for all for both American values and voters.

Why has it taken so long for these chickenstriches to temporarily pull their heads out of the sand and squawk out something about these matters? Very, very, suspicious to say the least. When spineless wimps are entrusted to defend people’s rights, they’ll just cower into the shadows while sociopathic corporate bullies run roughshod. At most, these Joe-Liebermanesque whores (Democrat/Republican/”Independent” – a ho is a ho) who primarily bend down for the the interests of their corporate-pimps, will, when cornered, deliver mealy-mouthed platitudes to try to appease their constituents.

Seems like good news. What happened to Brazille? Wow. A lot less Bob Shrum and a lot more Rosa Parks.

So here’s the fork in the road: the Democrats, with heads out of asses, raise hell with sustained righteous anger, or they just kind of let the issue fade while they try to look busy on the next issue. Unfortunately, the latter path is a lot more well worn and deaply rutted than the former. But this seems different. I’m probably just getting suckered again.

If you’re going to call Democrats cowards, at least try to do it in the right way:

    1) pick a specific Democrat. May I suggest John Murtha or one of the Viet Nam veterans?

    2) Call him a coward to his face. See how it goes…

I’m guessing you don’t have the balls to do this. If so, you can go on calling Democrats cowards. If not, shut your piehole.

I love my country, the United States of America. With that being said, I’d love nothing more than to get my hands on ANY member of congress. I GUARANTEE you that they’d walk away (maybe) with a memorable experience to say the least. THESE PEOPLE ALL BELONG BEHIND BARS!!!

And yes, the Democrats ARE cowards. The proof is in the f*cked-up Iraqi-style pudding!
I was a HARD-CORE Democrat, involved in efforts to help the Democrats stop Bush. But now, in the past week, I’ve has a revelation: Democrat or Republican, they are different heads on the same monster. Democrats are weak, corrupt… Republicans are strong and even MORE corrupt, but the Democrats are STILL corrupt. I’m totally fed up with this entire FAKE government, it’s all just theatre being performed as a distraction to the American people while those in power fleece us. I’M TIRED OF IT!!!!

I’ll continue expressing my opinion, Perry, and you’re not going to stop me. Trust me, I can throw my hammy fist as well as the next guy, but that is NOT what I respect. I’m talking about moral backbone. Not the meat-headed recklessness of mob-mentality Neanderthals. That just involves shutting off one’s faculties of reason; any fool can do that(if that is something you dig, move to North Korea — they’re real tough over there). I am referring to the morally bravery of independent thinkers willing to look at the facts, be strong enough to be intellectually honest, and brave enough stand up for what’s right, even when they have to go up against media propaganda and fascistic armies of corporate-employed thugs trying to gut the nation’s democracy.

Nice to see Donna Brazille saying something meaningful. Agree with upthread comment…way past time for an apology. Time for impeachment and jail time for Bushco and MSM players. Tweetie and Timmeh come to mind. Judith Miller..NYTimes …Washington Post….Rush…so many. Weren’t the enablers tried at the Hague rather than the higher ups in Nazi Germany? We should set a good example and send the higher ups and lower downs to the Hague. Would help our reputation….and our collective US psyche.

Yes, DREDD! That struck me, too. An apology?! Are they kidding? From BEHIND BARS, maybe–doin’ hard time with no white-collar, fruity little ‘Godfather’ perks–for life, assets frozen, the Bush twins doing laundry or picking cherry tomatoes just to make a buck (preferably in Iraq.) I’d also like this administration to throw in a nice fruit basket for the 8 years of my life that G.W.B. has sucked away from me like a he’s a damn Skeksi…

If, in light of such eye-opening, paradigm-shifting, horrific insight as detailed above–if THIS is the strongest response the DNC can come up with, then we should all be able to agree here that the word “cowardly” is apt enough, if not overly gracious.

You’re right Dredd, apology my ass, don’t close down Gitmo quite yet…

DNC is so clueless. bush and company march to the beat of different drummer. I sometimes think gw has signed this country’s death warrant and we are headed down the rabbit hole. I know gw & company don’t listen to the will of the people or their party. I’m just curious who is pulling his strings – oil barons getting their foothold in middle east oil I suppose. The fact that gw and cheney aren’t impeached is totally amazing. Now, another prez wannabe, fred thompson, is spewing the same gw tactics. I keep hoping a miracle candidate comes forth out of the blue and everyone knows this one is it and leads us out of this nightmare bush got us in!

I got the tongue-in-cheek humor of your post right away Floridiot (don’t worry, I’m not missing the irony gene). I did click on his name and watch the video. If I didn’t say anything about it, it is because it left me speechless. Kind of reminded me of “The King of Comedy,” a film starring Robert De Niro, about a psychotic comedian…

As said up thread,.. way past the time for a simple apology or slap on the wrist.

As the DNC explores investigating the A-B-C’s of voter disenfranchisement and voter suppression from 2000, 2002, 2004, & 2006,.. KKKarl Rove and his young fascist minions in training are devising the X-Y-Z’s of purging valid voters from the roles for 2008.

These Fascists will scrub and purge Democratic Party voter roles in schemes of 1,000 different ways to achieve their well advertised goal of – 100 YEAR SINGLE PARTY – REPUBLICAN RULE.

Too late in the game for apologies.

Too late in the game for a mere slap on the wrist.

If these Nazi/Fascists in any way tamper with or deny legal voters from the ballot box, or a legal vote from being properly counted – these jack-boot, brown-shirt, anti-American, anti-Democracy, anti-Civil Rights and Constitutional Law GESTAPOS should be immediately incarcerated for not less than ten years.

These actions are beyond college prank. This is a FASCIST COUP to bring serious damage/detriments – to American Democracy.

This is not a mistake – it is a well thought out plan of specific intent and design. 100 YEAR SINGLE PARTY RULE !!!
