Stan Heidrich #6
Ok, I buy it in the sense that Dylan said "you got some big dreams baby, but to dream you gotta be asleep".
The dream is not American. It is the human dream. Americans do not have that dream so much, even tho lip service is paid to it.
The Ukrainian people have the dream far more even tho "The Ukrainian dream" does not sound out as well ... its a fame thing.
THE HUMAN DREAM is to love and be loved, to smile at and be smiled at, to be peaceful and to have peace, to have enough and to share enough.
I think Thompson was just another honest person who was outraged at the concept of America right or wrong.
The nationalization of the human dream is theft and is so very wrong. It is "a lame fuck around, a waste of time". But the human dream is not.
If we grasp that we will take no life. I am so very sad he is reported to have taken his life.

Maybe that final moment of release is worth it all.
Goodbye, Hunter S.

#7 Dredd, #8, #10 Teresa,
I am unhappy too... even in fun times and laughter there is an underlying layer of unhappiness. A tightness. An urgency. Smiles that don't break into full smile. Yet dreams of a great future. A harmonious vision of a natural world. Tomorrow.
Our decaying world is partially my fault. And we've lost another... But with it all remains a much stronger sense of hope, responsibility, and urgency.
Mr Thompson may have lost all hope, and so with it his life. I wish he'd have sought out others over the end...
Tomorrow may be way better than yesterday. If only he'd have sought hope..? RIP

Really? Tell us more.
Torqued #12,
That was beautiful. Makes me feel better. You are so right about the underlying unhappiness. And so, so right to say this brave sentence: "Our decaying world is partially my fault".
I have always said the same thing, and I've been trying to search my own self and life for ways to improve.
I want so much for us to realize just even a fraction af that 'dream', American or otherwise.
Every death gives us a new opportunity.

Teresa - It wasn't really any big deal. Back when we were studying Russian in Monterrey in the 60s some friends and I used to go down to Big Sur to trip around the redwoods and all that, and on several occasions sneaked into the Esalen Institute to lie back in the hot baths and watch the whales migrate by. There were always plenty of clean, fluffy towels, and it was a favorite diversion of ours. One day the security dude spotted us on the way over a fence to get out and screamed at us and fired off a volley over our heads to make his point. Turned out later that it was Hunter S. himself. Would that we'd been around to get him to laugh about old times when he needed friends. He was a truly special person, as are we all...

Start with Fred #5 and focus on "We'd gone in search of the American Dream". They had set their sights too low.
There is a larger dream, THE HUMAN DREAM. To Thompson the american dream "had been a lame fuck around, a waste of time". They discovered the american nightmare instead.
That is because when you leave out the majority of mankind, and leave out the earth, you begin to make war, hurt the earth, and avoid civility.
Once the american dream was in sync with the human dream, but the current american dream being lived within the realm of bu$hit is not the human dream, nor the original american dream.
It is a nightmare posing as sanity.
Here bloggers from different parts of the world get together and express consternation at the decaying american nightmare and seek to restore the human dream and sync the american dream to it.
The first mission is to bring it back to the MSM - the hardware within which the american nightmare flourishes.
We are at the gates ... we are storming the bastille ... we are throwing cold water in the faces of the MSM so they can wake up.
The human dream takes in the needs of the starving children, the starving adults, the aching Iraqi populace, and all of hurting humanity of this age of death. The human nightmare.
An age when for the first time all life can be destroyed in a nuclear holocaust.
This was brought to the world within the confines of the american nightmare ... the place and home of the nightmare.
The place of the military machine that wants to put bootprints deep within the oil drug dealers lands, rather than shake the addiction. The phony capitalism that will not allow competition nor economic freedom.
That is some of what I mean by the "dream stuff". Like your cool post #6 suggests, the MSM is committing suicide because instead of the human dream it has the american nightmare.
It would probably be more accurate to couch this in terms of the western dream and the eastern dream. Unless and until these are both the human dream, this nightmare will continue.

Once again, the MSM gets it wrong --- he didn't die in his compound, he died in a dramatic charge on Washington, a bazooka on each shoulder. No civilians were injured, but before turning his gun on himself the disgruntled author managed to unleash massive damage on the capitol's fascist architecture. The White House has declined to comment officially, but sources close to the President categorize his mood following the incident as "freaked out."
That's the story my kids will hear, some day, at least.

My son emailed me two interesting details:
[Hunter S. Thompson's] major foray into public life occurred in 1970, when he decided that "there might be some serious fun in politics" and duly stood for Sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado on a platform of drug decriminalisation. The Republican candidate sported a crew cut, which prompted the contrary author to shave his head entirely and
refer to his rival as "my long-haired opponent" throughout the campaign. He lost by a handful of votes. -guardian

"There was only one road back to L.A. US Interstate 15, just a flat-out high speed burn through Baker and Barstow and Berdoo. Then on to the Hollywood Freeway straight into frantic oblivion: safety, obscurity. Just another freak in the Freak Kingdom. We'd gone in search of the American Dream. It had been a lame fuck around, a waste of time. There was no point in looking back. Fuck no, not today thank you kindly. My heart was filled with joy. I felt like a monster reincarnation of Horatio Alger: a man on the move, and just sick enough to be totally confident."

No WAY do I think this was a suicide! (and that wasn't his suicide note, either, was it?) A friend of mine who just saw him talk in Austin says he was obviously happy, and I saw him in a video speaking in Ca. just a couple of weeks ago- energized by the crowd, on top of his form, and WHY would he kill himself at this point in his life? And WHY does he live in a "Fortified Compound"? and wouldn't he have written one HELLUVA suicide note, being who he is, and not just that last discourse about "shotgun golf" with Bill Murray? I just got finnished reading about all the other suspicious "suicides" of journalists who were famous for speaking very damaging truth to Power, ESPECIALLY where it concerns the Bush Machine:

Bia Winter #26 interesting post.
The Lemme death (Curtis case), carelessly ruled a suicide, is quite questionable too.
I did some research, and there is an undercover government hit process going on. Any of the entertainment (music - e.g. Hendrix) icons, true journalists, and activists (Martin Luther King, Kennedys, etc) are subject to their death squads.
This link shows they have even contemplated targeting airliners filled with college kids, shooting and bombing innocent folk in crowds, just to advance their own agenda to spread demockracy around.
HST would have been a target. His lawyer says it could be a suicide tho ... but qien sabe?
