Yesterday, at CBS, a reporter with a camera crew asked a number of very tough, very overdue questions of Colin Powell, who has received an inexplicable Get Out of Jail Free card from the media and almost everyone else. No, we’re not referring to his much ballyhooed — and also very overdue — admissions on Face the Nation that “we are losing” in Iraq, and that he’s “not persuaded that another surge of troops into Baghdad…will work.”
The very tough questions, which obviously irritated Powell, concerned his own complicity in getting us into this mess in the first place. But the questions weren’t asked by CBS’s Bob Schieffer during his own televised “exclusive.” Nor were they asked by a determined reporter from the NY Times or Washington Post or Newsweek or any of the networks.
The questions were asked by a guy named Sam Husseini of Washington Stakeout. He stands outside the network studios on Sunday mornings trying to ask actual questions of the “newsmakers” after they’ve left their softball interviews with Bob and Tim and George.
Jonathan Schwartz highlights the questions for Powell and his answers (both caught in short video segments) in which Husseini simply nails Powell on his UN garbage.
Imagine if the corporate mainstream media actually asked such questions — before we end up in intractable wars at unspeakable cost…though we’d settle for them asking such questions now. Any takers out there?

Phase II of the investigation of events and statements of regime officials leading up to the war, including those of Powell and especially those of preznit blush are coming to the forefront.
Rockefeller is taking over as chairman and replacing Pat Roberts who has lied again and again about conducting Phase II. The republican majority on that committee, the Senate Intelligence Committee, promised to do Phase II then they refused to do so after dems agreed to do the first part based on that promise.
Now the oversight and investigation will go on under Rockefeller as chair of the committee. No dems have the majority on the committee and have subpoena power.
Tough questions will be asked. Perhaps Sam Husseini should be a witness.

Also the congress is going to start to talk tough about getting the troops out of Iraq.

If you really don’t like corporate mainstream media, they need to play by the existing rules. But, whoop, ope.. already looks like they don’t want to play by the rules.
So okay people, getting rid of electronic voting machines should be your number one goal, but part of that problem is corporate mainstream media (I been saying this all along)
I know it may be an even more difficult fight. But this particular fight is tied directly to the hip of the first amendment. The FCC say’s it IS NOT a first amendment issue, but hey, they’re just Bush appointees who have replaced real engineers who care.

ColonColin . . . . . on invading Iraq. . .I saw a great interview with Edward Kennedy on Fox News Sunday. Look at the line ups and then make your decision as to which one if any to watch. The only real news is Amy Goodman on Democracy Now, Link TV. She and her brother were on cspan with Brian Lamb last week. To me, this was progress. The callers were for the most part smart and congenial. That was progress too.
I remember watching that presentation and thinking, “Where’s the beef?” Seriously, a vial of sugar and some cartoons were supposed to scare me? And what about the fact that both he and Condi Shops-a-Lot stated on television in 2001 that Saddam was contained, that he had no WMD and that the sanctions were working? All of a sudden Saddam was threatening the U.S.? Riiiiiiiiigggggggght.
Colin Powell’s “integrity” is a media creation, just like John McCain’s “independence”. They are both loyal GOP soldiers – the only difference is that McCain is a neo-con and Powell isn’t. Still, Powell’s willingness to lend his pseudo-credibility to the ludicrous WMD claims should disqualify him from public life. Hell, he should be in jail for war crimes!
