Can't be OT on an OT, right? This is great! I want to get duhbaya over here to Prague and get him to go biking with me. There's a new set of roadway laws here, and the other day a young Czech fell off his bike and hurt himself. Turns out he caused an accident that resulted in the injury of a person (himself), and so he was arrested and fined 50,000 Czech crowns (the average monthly wage is 20,000). Duhbaya could easily afford the fine, of course, but he would probably become enamored of the audacity of the state and move his ranch over here - they can have each other, as far as I can tell...

Isn't it more than ironic (sickening, really) that the neocon crew has glommed onto the word 'fascism' now? News flash to mr. cheney: 'fascism' has an actual, specific definition. It's incorrect to use the word as if it is simply synonymous with 'bad'. Who do you think you are, dick? george bush?
But what I really wanted to post was this Americablog story:
'GOP Congress blocked Clinton push for anti-terror legislation'
by John in DC - 9/04/2006
A link in that piece leads to:
'President wants Senate to hurry with new anti-terrorism laws'
-July 30, 1996
A bit from that one:
"...Hatch called Clinton's proposed study of...chemical markers in explosives that could help track terrorists..."a phony issue."...
...He also said he had some problems with the president's proposals to expand wiretapping..."
Really, orrin? What have you had to say AFTER 1996 about expanding wiretapping, I wonder?
'Patriot Act II Resurrected?'
-Aug, 21, 2003
"Congress may consider a bill that not only expands the government's wiretapping and investigative powers but also would link low-level drug dealing to terrorism...
The draft legislation --- titled the Vital Interdiction of Criminal Terrorist Organizations Act of 2003, or Victory Act...includes a raft of provisions increasing the government's ability to investigate, wiretap, prosecute and incarcerate money launderers, fugitives, "narco-terrorists" and nonviolent drug dealers. The bill also outlaws hawalas, the informal and documentless money transferring systems widely used in the Middle East, India and parts of Asia.
A June 27 draft of the bill [was] authored by Sen. Orrin Hatch..."
I think I hear that old GOP cheer again...
Hip! Hip! Hypocrisy!

Hey Joan - Not to split hairs, but "media" is, after all, plural. Of course our old friend the Ho Commander can't be consistent, singular verb, plural possessive, so you're right, as far as you go, but I cringe when I hear stuff like "the media is..." Just sayin'

Czaragorn,
Yeah, you're right, it's plural. Although I hear it used as a singular all the time...might it be one of those gray areas where usage dictates? I dunno.
But for consistency's sake in ho's sentence, I would've gone with 'its'. I mean, might as well be all-the-way wrong, eh?
But thanks for the correction, anyway!

Czaragorn #12....ARE YOU SERIOUS?! That's terrible!
I sometimes fantasize that if ever I were at one of those super-elite bushie townhall meetings & got to ask the chimpking a question, I'd say sweetly:
"Mr. President, why can't you pronounce nuclear?"
You know, I have a theory about that, actually. I think he now pronounces it incorrectly out of pure stubborn spite.
Years ago, my mom worked with a woman who mispronounced Rutgers (a school in NJ) as Rukters, and my mom corrected her. (Haha, my mom's like me, a pain-in-the-butt stickler about words). The woman did not take kindly to being corrected, & the next time she saw my mom, she kept repeating to herself in a little singsong "Rukters Rukters Rukters Rukters" over & over, trying to get a rise out of my mom.
I think that's about bush's mentality, too. Lord, the man's GOTTA know how it's pronounced by NOW!!!

czaragorn: The word was "antonymically". They speak antonymically. Whatever they say, you can be sure it's a lie and/or that it means the exact opposite of the words they use. i.e. Clean Air Act, PATRIOT Act, and now "Victory" Act.

Thanks for giving Mike Malloy a space about his unjust firing. I find it odd that some of the web sites that Mike would plug every now and then didn’t even give him as much of a peep. No support or anything. It’s awful what they did to Mike, you would think the web sites that got plugged on his show every now and then would have at least gave him a little space for his story or his petition drive. Kind of like stabbing a friend in the back when he’s down in my opinion.

Packing is a monster drag, and, when you are desperate for some evidence of sense in your fellow Americans --- and very, very, very many of us are --- you're apt to keep coming back to where you've seen it! It's not an addiction; it's a fundamental need in the true human.
Still, if you HAVE TO pack, get it done, and come back as soon as you can. We want to hear from you, and want to help you find food for your vital energy --- truth, sense --- if we can.

In fact, I've been listening to the Malloy interview of Web Tarpley again today, and it never fails to strike me, the timbre, pitch and intensity of the callers' voices on that show. They were like people saved from certain death. The pressure of speech, the whiffs of a desperation in the moment of resolution, the avidity for the sense being played out on the radio FOR REAL, FOR ONCE. Some say that Malloy was fired because of this interview, and because he had dared mention that Israel was doing wrong in Lebanon.
A lot of us have been screaming FASCISM! for years, and it only looks and feels more like it now than it did when we started. So, yep, very many people are starving for evidence of sense, of humans trying to bring out truth, defending democracy, acting like they give a damn about something more than their paychecks and maintaining their ignore-ance --- anything leading away from the slaughter being carried out in our name.
This is why you hear the right calling everything and everyone ELSE "fascist" now. It's that antonymic speech thing of theirs. It's the need to dupe and confuse as many people as possible. It's treason in progress.

Here’s a new song by Country Joe McDonald. Well - actually recorded in 2004.
It can be found for listening here - takes Real Player to listen
CAKEWALK TO BAGHDAD
Lyrics and music by Bruce Barthol © 2003
I remember back, before we whacked Iraq
I was watching the news, were we gonna attack?
A man named Richard Perle came on and talked
He said going to Baghdad would be a cakewalk
Cakewalk to Baghdad,
Cakewalk to Baghdad
It went real easy,
Took a couple of weeks
Tore down that statue
Set those Saddamites free
The Frogs and the Krauts, they feel real bad,
They missed out cakewalkin’ into Baghdad
Cakewalk to Baghdad,
Cakewalk to Baghdad
Next we’re gonna cakewalk into Teheran,
Gonna cakewalk to Damascus and Pyong-yin-yang
When we strut on in,
Everybody’s gonna cheer
They’ll be wavin’ old glory,
We’ll have kegs of beer, just like that…
Cakewalk to Baghdad,
Cakewalk to Baghdad
Cakewalk to Baghdad,
Cakewalk to Baghdad
Now moms and dads don’t worry ‘bout
Your soldier boys and girls
We’re just sending them cakewalkin’
Around the world
When the coffins come home and the flag unfurls
Cheer for Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and Perle
Cakewalk to Baghdad,
Cakewalk to Baghdad
Do you think we’ll see those Bush boys patrollin’ the streets
Like our soldiers got to do in Basram and Tikrit?
We gonna see Richard Perle cakewakin’ ‘round
The streets and alleys of Baghdad town?
Cakewalk to Baghdad,
Cakewalk to Baghdad
Easy to cakewalk in … not so easy to cakewalk out.

I have a request for information on behalf of a political junkie friend who generally leans far to the right but is very interested in voting issues. (For all you Californians, I'll note that he helped run Mary Carey's campaign in the gubernatorial recall election. I'll also mention that he has no love for our own Mitt the Twit or for W, although our respective reasons for agreeing on these points overlap only slightly.)
We've been talking about the Busby-Bilbray fiasco as it has been unfolding. When I told him about the swearing-in before the votes were counted, he said, first, that that sounded wrong to him but, second, that he thought he remembered an incident where the Democrats pulled a similar stunt. Does that ring a bell with anyone here? He was also going to check with his usual sources to see if he was remembering correctly, and I said I'd post the question here.
I think we'd all agree that such a move would be wrong no matter who did it. But I'd be interested to know if there was any precedent, and, if so, what if anything came of it.

Thank you so much Bluebear2. I will report back on what my friend finds. It seemed unlikely to me that it could be true because I assume we would have heard no end of it in justification of this outrageous perversion of democracy, just as we hear all about Nixon's loss in 1960 whenever we mention stolen elections. My response to that has become "I see you can't come up with a more recent example of possible Democratic wrongdoing, but I can come up with example after example of Republicans stealing elections beginning with 2000 and continuing to today."

Laura & BB 36 & 37,
You beat me to it. JESUS H. CHRIST, this is the most blatant, in-your-face declaration that bush is now KING that I've seen yet.
Just READ this shit!
"The Bush administration has declared itself immune from whistleblower protections for federal workers under the Clean Water Act...
...federal employees may no longer pursue whistleblower claims under the Clean Water Act. The opinion invoked the ancient doctrine of sovereign immunity which is based on the old English legal maxim that "The King Can Do No Wrong." It is an absolute defense to any legal action unless the "sovereign" consents to be sued..
The opinion and the ruling reverse nearly two decades of precedent..."
Um...let me repeat that 'king' part:
This ruling is based on the maxim that "THE KING CAN DO NO WRONG".
Goddammit and I'm trying not to SMOKE for Christs sake.

Monday's piece by Chris Floyd is exceptionally good, I thought:
Imperial Apologia: Senate Prepares Pardon for Caesar
Well, I was going to write about Arlen Specter's "Imperial Apologia" bill --- which "legalizes" Bush's patently illegal warrantless surveillance program and whitewashes five years of clearly criminal behavior --- because it's coming before Congress this week, and I've written extensively about it before. (Craven Image: The Senate Bows to Imperial Power; July 20; Fever Dream: Fast Forward to the End of Democracy; Jan. 27). But I find that, as usual, Glenn Greenwald has already got it covered ...and said just about everything I wanted to say about it. (Greenwald is both curse and blessing for dissident writers; a curse, because he is so often "the firstest with the mostest" on many of the vital matters of our time; and a blessing, of course, because he does so much of the heavy lifting for you.)
So go read his whole piece, after you've sampled some excerpts below. This bill is a watershed moment in the history of our Republic; although the spirit of liberty has long rotted away inside the gilded carapace of power, this bill will remove some of the remaining outward flourishes that, in better times, might yet be re-animated. But if the president's power to break laws at whim is officially acknowledged as part of the institutional framework of our government --- as it will be if Specter's craven measure passes --- there will be precious little left to build on. Even the ruins and rubble of our Constitutional Republic are being pounded into sand by Bush and his willing executioners of freedom. They want to leave us nothing that is not in their own iron, bloodstained hands. Dark days indeed.
...
This is a theme I have harped on until I am blue in the face. The idea that the president does not already have draconian powers of surveillance over anyone even remotely suspected of terrorist activity or inclinations is one of the many great and poisonous lies of our times. Yet as Glenn makes clear in this post, it is dram of evil that has been swallowed with gusto by the national media.

It's not the same as freedom of speech for honest, dissenting opinions. Lies and propoganda are different. We can get into a great discussion with someone with an honest, dissenting opinion. We don't have time, nor should Brad offer, a place for lies and misinformation. There's the MSM for that. If Brad lets people post lies and misinformation here, what's the difference between Brad Blog and the MSM?

Yeah. I've got one. I haven't been able read David Corn in at least a couple of years without "a paper bag" "on my knee" (to borrow a phrase: RIP JWL - sob!) ... I've been thinking "If David Corn is not a gatekeeper then he does a great gatekeeper-impersonation."
Have you seen this graphic before? THE GATEKEEPERS: Foundations Fund Phony 'Left Media'
Look for David Corn's name in the bottom right corner.
Have you read these articles?
Regulated Resistance: Is It Possible To Change The System When You Are The System?
Regulated Resistance: Pt. 2 - The Gatekeepers of the So-Called Left
and ... if you'll permit me to link to one of my own ... here's a cold-blog entry with a decidedly hairy ending: Pick Up All The Pieces And Make An Island

WP: The American Free Press extensively reports on Bilderberg and the New World Order. Recently tasered Christopher Bollyn is a reporter for AFP. I just resubscribed to AFP. AFP consistenly reports on Bilderberg, 9/11 inside job, and e-vote fraud, and the Israeli lobby influencing our government too much. What's not to like about AFP? The only newspaper in America who reports on this stuff.

WP: Found this about "left gatekeepers" getting rid of Mike Malloy, from Wayne Madsen:
Sept. 2/3, 2006 --- WMR is de-linking to Air America Radio as a result of its decision to fire Mike Malloy. We will not provide portals to those who claim they are liberals and progressives but serve as information gatekeepers and censors for the global media elites and neo-con types.
The Washington Post's cheap shot at Ambassador Joseph Wilson and his former covert CIA wife in yesterday's edition should earn them a de-linking from our site, but there are still a few (very few) decent reporters there whose articles should be read. However, the paper's editorial staff consists of nothing more than neo-con apologists and enablers and globalists who decry Mexico's popular revolt against election fraud, Venezuela's Bolivarian Revolution, Bolivia's peasant and Native American rise to power, and anything that endangers the plans of the corporate and banking elites. In one of the highest compliments paid to WMR, a former Washington Post senior editor said we are providing the hard-hitting coverage of politics and corruption in Washington that the Post should be doing. And with that and other words of support at our backs, we will continue to ply ahead as the November election --- the most critical in the history of the United States --- nears.
Mike Malloy: Fired by the information gatekeepers and censors at Air America Radio.
The Post and Air America Radio are in the same category of other so-called "liberal" web sites to which we de-linked as soon as it became apparent that they were nothing more than Democratic Leadership Council annexes parading around as liberal web sites. They are identifiable by their banning of posters and incessant censorship of content. Malloy unabashedly told his listening audience that he and his wife voted for Cynthia McKinney in the recent Georgia primary run-off election. The sacking of Malloy and the party purge of McKinney are all part of the censorship in this country --- censorship that is aided and abetted from the ranks of so-called Democrats. This country will not return to an even keel until we not only cleanse the neo-cons and fanatic right-wingers from our midst, but also those who claim "progressive: credentials but are, in fact, lickspittles for the corporate elites.
WMR continues to provide direct links to the Randi Rhodes Show, Ring of Fire with Bobby Kennedy Jr. and Mike Papantonio, Thom Hartmann, and Sam Seder's Majority Report. We support their continued independence from the corporate censors and overseers at Air America Radio. Our boycott of Air America Radio and its sponsors will continue until that network re-instates Malloy with a new and more financially beneficial contract. Until then, Air who?

1996 July,.. Clinton asks for legal expanded wiretapping to keep tabs on OBL,.. the Republican controlled house rejected Clinton's requests to be able to better monitor international terrorism.
Now Arlen Spencer writes laws to retroactively exonerate bu$$hco for breaking the FISA Laws and violations of civil and constitutional rights of the citizens of the USA.

JOJ - yuk! Who likes the taste of the gum? Besides, it's looking more and more like the nicotine itself is more of a problem than the smoking part (I'm sure there's a link out there somewhere...). BB2 - You were lucky to get off so easy. 45 years of heavy smoking won me a thankfully minor stroke and a few weeks of seeing double. Yes sir, that'll do it! And now I could afford the occasional hooker, were I so inclined!
