Well, right about now, hopefully, our champion John Conyers should be talking to anyone who will listen at the commission. Let’s hope President Carter is not bamboozled by Baker and his stream of BS witnesses and speaks out the truth in a big way!
By the way, the Washington Times guys obviously did not get the memo that no one should be reporting any election irregularities–and I mean that literally. Could it be they didn’t get the memo because the White House never considered this Republican bastion a threat?

FWIW, as far as I can tell, the Commission is funded by individual foundations, not by the government/ taxpayers. (Or maybe you were making a more general comment?)

All: AU has a web site for the Commission, and if you keep following buttons you will see who all of the members are, and then at the bottom of that page, see a link to academic advisors. The site also lists the names of the sponsoring foundations. You may be able to find email addresses for some of these = more contacts if you are feeling email-energetic.
I’ve been trying to think of some newsperson(s) to email with a link to the BB/Pastor exchange, for the sake of further positive visibility. Not someone like Olbermann. But someone who cares and can get it right. At first pass, Carl Bernstein came to mind. But, I couldn’t find an email address for him. We need to use the "six degrees of separation" principle: someone who knows someone who knows… etc. (Or should that be "’6 or 7′ degrees of separation"..? geddit?)

Second, I had an actual job interview for an IT job. Amazing . . . have not had any good ones since the chimp took office orginally.
Third, all the great news on this site today. Are cracks forming?

Dear Mighty BradBloggers, or should I say, 6 or 7 Squad,
It’s been a long couple of weeks since I lit out of here with my hair on fire, ready to break ties with you over a disagreement, albeit an intense one. I still take the same positions I did then, but I want you all to know, though especially I want my Blood Brother Dredd to know, that if I offended him or anyone else with my strident defense of that position, it was never my intention to do so, nor am I an inherently violent person, although I will say here Dredd, that yes, I would *kill* anyone who layed a hand on my boy, or die trying.
Like all or most of you, I have been struggling with the frustration and anger I feel at what is happening to my country and the inability of the average lazy, self absorbed American citizen to wake the F up and do something, like all of you here are doing, and like I have been trying to do. When that dude, Rise Rise posted….well, it just fanned an already smoldering flame. A flame that I have carried inside me since I was a child when I marched with my kick ass Mother in the streets of New York against the Vietnam War. I grew up with *action*. I was surrounded, and still am surrounded with people of *action*. My Mother taught me to love, to use reason, to be compassionate, to give of myself, to cherish and nurture my children, to work hard, to seek justice in the world, and to play fair……..but she also taught me that there are evil people in this world and sometimes, when all avenues and remedies are exhausted, that the only thing that evil and brutal people understand is *action, and protest, and civil disobedience, and sometimes, force…..in their face.
I will say only one more thing on this before I beg all of you to take my sorry ass back…….We haven’t reached the point of no return *yet*, and I hope to The Great Spirit that it never comes to that.
Now…….I want you to know that I did send my e-mail to Dr. Pastor, and I did warn some folks in a diary at DKos about him and his connections to Common Cause and his position on the Carter/Baker (#%!?&??!!!) election commission before they went ahead and donated. So I have been checking in and carrying on along with you in my self imposed exile (ignorant dumbass hothead that I am), and I just wondered if, since you’ve gotten this far through this miserable exercise in suck-up-edness……do you think I can join or re-join your 6 or 7 Squad?

🙂 I’ve always liked you hon 🙂 I must have missed the blow up, but I know sometimes i feel like screaming and tearing my hair out in big clumps. And there are times when I just start crying on a dime about how damn bad things are and about friends I have lost to this mess because I cannot give up my conviction or working toward making people aware.
I try to do little things, like send out my emails and sign all the petitions . . .speak at my state house about the voting crap and write and think about other projects I can do to make people more aware.
I don’t know what happened but having read many of your other posts, I am glad you are here.

I must confess I was not one of the original 6-or-7’s
and I am jealous now! Haha! I humbly beg to be accepted into the fold, and I’ve finally finished my letter to Pastor. I write slow. I plan to send it snailmail as-is, unless you, whose opinion I greatly respect, tell me it sucks. My letter:
Dear Dr. Pastor,
I am compelled to write to you in an attempt to relieve you of your erroneous assumption
that all of the emails you recently received were sent by 6 or 7 people. I assure you, Dr.
Pastor, there are considerably more of us out here than that, and we are paying attention.
We were paying attention when Bev Harris sat at a computer with Howard Dean and
demonstrated how easy it is to hack the vote. (The video is on the internet. I suggest you
check it out. It’s quite enlightening.)
We were paying attention when elected officials in this country displayed outrage over the
Ukraine election—where they had somewhere in the neighborhood of 11,000 complaints and
some discrepancies between the exit polls and the outcome.
We were paying attention when, during our own 2004 election, there seemed to be a little
problem with our exit polls, too—not to mention more than 57,000 complaints, among them
allegations of perjury and machine tampering.
We were paying attention when Congressman John Conyers Jr. held hearings in Washington
and Ohio at which numerous witnesses testified under oath concerning these allegations and
complaints. Congressman Conyers compiled 102 pages of evidence, material crucial, one
would think, to any serious investigation into the state of our electoral process.
Yet he was not invited to participate on your committee.
And on January 6th when Senator Barbara Boxer stood—the only senator to do so—with
Congresswoman Tubbs-Jones to contest Ohio’s electoral votes, the handful of senators who
spoke "in support" of their effort were all careful to say that this was not about over-turning
the election. The election was over. This was about long lines and standing for hours in the
rain. They were careful to avoid any mention of "stolen elections", or "machine-tampering",
or "perjury"; careful not to mention "Clint Curtis"—have you even HEARD of him??—and
they were very, very careful not to utter the terrible F-word: "FRAUD". Heaven forfend!
This was America! How dare anyone even suggest such a blasphemy!
I remember that one of the things I heard more than once as repudiation of these allegations
was "Where’s the proof?" It was outrageous that these leftist conspiracy-theorists were making
these absurd allegations without any proof!
Well, let me ask you a question, Dr. Pastor: if someone told you their wife or child had been
assaulted would you scoff at them and say "Assaulted? How absurd! Show me your proof!"?
Or would you—being, presumably, a reasonably rational person—realize that assaults do un-
fortunately happen in this world, and go to the proper authorities and demand that they in-
vestigate? Perhaps an assault actually took place; perhaps not. But, normally, the proof is
found AFTER YOU INVESTIGATE THE ALLEGATIONS, not before! Normally, people do not
fall all over themselves to discount such serious matters as soon as they come to light. Unless
the purpose is to distort, obfuscate, whitewash, cover-up.
From where I’m sitting it appears that there is a mountain of credible evidence lending credence
to the possibility that our entire election process has been compromised. Front-page news!
Stop the presses! But no. Our media has been virtually silent. There have been a few stories, but
little outrage. I don’t find this baffling anymore. I do find it unconscionable. I do find it chilling.
I strongly suggest you read the article entitled "Fascism, Anyone?" by Laurence W. Britt. It is
also easily found on the internet, although, if you are as unfamiliar with the workings of mass
emailing as your conversation with Brad Friedman leads me to suspect, you may need help. Ask
your kids. Please pay particular attention to Mr. Britt’s list of fourteen characteristics of fascism.
Among them: …"Powerful and continuing expressions of nationalism…..Disdain for the import-
ance of human rights…..A controlled mass media…..Religion and ruling elite tied together…..
Power of corporations protected…..Rampant cronyism and corruption….."
Number 14 is "Fraudulent elections".
Mr Britt asks: "Does any of this ring alarm bells? Of course not. After all, this is America,
officially a democracy with the rule of law, a constitution, a free press, honest elections, and a
well-informed public constantly being put on guard against evils….."
Right. By our ever-vigilant, free press.
As I said, Dr. Pastor, none of this baffles me anymore, and I think I can say with certainty that
none of it baffles those "6 or 7" who, I fervently hope, will continue deluging you with emails,
letters and faxes. We get it.
We just wish to God you did.

As for the snide remark re: ask the kids — Pastor opened the floor on that one. Someone in his position cannot be ignorant of the mass email form letter petitioning going on, and if he is, he has no business being the Executive Director of an Election Reform Commission which is trying to install DREs across the board nationally.

Dear Ms. McCoy:
As you are listed as an “Academic Advisor” for the Commission on Federal Election Reform at American University, I am forwarding some information and suggestions that I wish you might submit to President Carter. Although I would have imagined that such a commission would welcome input from all concerned citizens, I have been very discouraged in my attempts to contact the appropriate person to receive this material, on behalf of President Carter.
When I called the Carter Center, two different representatives told me that the Center was not involved in the Blue Ribbon Commission (despite information to the contrary on the website at American University, which lists the Commission as being “in association with” the Carter Center). Ms. Lauren Gay, identified by the Carter Center as an assistant to President Carter, told me that I might send information to her. I did this yesterday, via registered overnight U.S. mail, but when I called to verify that she had received it, Ms. Gay seemed at a loss as to what should be done with it, and called the American University. A representative for the Commission there subsequently called me and told me to forward everything to Dr. Robert Pastor, “Executive Director” of the Commission.
I actually did not wish to have my information, although it is nothing that is not publicly available, filtered through the good offices of Dr. Pastor, so I am sending it to you, for Mr. Carter.
Material which I thought might be useful to President Carter includes:
· Ohio’s Odd Numbers, an article by Christopher Hitchens (attached above) published Feb. 20, 2005 in Vanity Fair: This is a well-written, mainstream press piece giving background on not only the obvious problems in Ohio (long lines in minority precincts, selective paucity of voting machines), but documenting VERY SUSPICIOUS tallies in certain predominantly black counties. I believe, as do many others, that these are not isolated “glitches,” but a peek at the visible results of largely hidden electronic fraud.
· Analysis of the 2004 Presidential Election Exit Poll Discrepancies, released March 31, 2005 (updated April 11, 2005) : a multi-author, peer-reviewed study of the Edison/Mitofsky Election System 2004 Report (released January 19, 2005). This study was backed by the Utah-based non-profit corporation, US Count Votes. Their concluding sentence reads: “The absence of any statistically-plausible explanation for the discrepancy between Edison/Mitofsky’s exit poll data and the official presidential vote tally is an unanswered question of vital national importance that demands a thorough and unblinking investigation.”

· A fact sheet prepared by Judith Alter, Ed.D, titled “Santa Fe County: 2004 Election and the Straight Party Option.” Dr. Alter’s data suggests that machine-tallied votes in this county may have been erroneous because machines were calibrated to tally straight party votes in a way that significantly benefited Mr. Bush. (Not available online: I mailed it to President Carter’s assistant, Lauren Gay, at the Carter Center)
· A Fact Sheet presented by Bernard Windham, a member of Common Cause from Florida, who has undertaken a heroic analysis of the thousands of specific complaints made by voters from around the country to the EIRS election day Hotline. This link, http://www.flcv.com/summary.html, will open a file containing links to state by state complaints. (I mailed the Fact Sheet to Ms. Gay at the Carter Center).
· A troubling PRESS RELEASE from Mr. Brad Friedman https://bradblog.com/archives/00001316.htm titled: American Center for Voting Rights & the Baker/Carter Commission on Federal election Reform: The Fix Is In. This report details the problems with a “voting rights” group, one of whose founding members, Mark F. (Thor) Hearne, II, was “the National Attorney for Bush/Cheney ’04 Inc. and leader of the recently invented, phony GOP front group calling themselves the "non-partisan" American Center for Voting Rights (ACVR) has been seated on the Academic Advisory board for this commission!”. Please bring this to President Carter’s attention.
· A fact sheet (“North Carolina’s ballot blues”) from Joyce McCloy, coordinator of the N.C. Coalition for Verified Voting, a non-partisan organization of citizens from across the state who are very concerned that North Carolina is moving forward in with the implementation of DRE’s (electronic voting machines) that are not secure, not reliable and not voter verifiable. They call for improved security and increased transparency in all election systems used in North Carolina. http://www.ncvoter.net (I mailed this Fact Sheet to Ms. Gay at the Carter Canter.)
· A fact sheet from The Open Voting Consortium, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to developing open voting systems. The fact sheet is called “Transparent Liberty: Accountable Election Systems.” (I sent this fact sheet to Ms. Gay) http://www.openvotingconsortium.org/ . On their website you will find the an academic article titled A PC-Based Open-Source Voting Machine with an Accessible Voter-Verifiable Paper Ballot (with Arthur M. Keller, Alan Dechert & Karl Auerbach (http://gnosis.cx/publish/voting...ng-machine.pdf), a compilation of recommendations resulting from 4 years of work by this organization.
· A document posted on the website of the non-partisan voters’ rights organization Voters Unite .org (http://www.votersunite.org/), titled “Restoring Confidence to Voters.” This is a report from the Independent Election Committee appointed by the Mercer County Board of Commissioners documenting voting problems from Nov. 2004 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania.
· An “Official Ohio Recount Affidavit” from Dr. Richard Hayes Phillips, Ph.D., professor at the University of Oregon, in which he documents his own exhaustive research into election fraud in Ohio. I could provide you and President Carter with much more documentation of the selfless efforts of these and other real citizen-patriots. Many have long worked toward President Carter’s stated goal for the Blue Ribbon Election Commission: an election system that “will make America proud again.” Their information should be publicly noted and they should be invited to testify at American University on April 18, 2005.
I, personally, believe, as do many others, that Mr. Baker can not be an “honest broker,” and has an obvious conflict of interest as Co-Chair of this commission.

As I said in my last email, I did not provide your name to a "network." YOU provided your name to American University, which listed it on their website. If you click on your name in the live link below, I believe you will see that your email address is listed below your impressive bona fides, right next to your (two) phone numbers and your FAX. This is, of course, also how I obtained it (I’m a physician, not a magician).
I suggest that if you want to avoid the heat, you stay out of the kitchen. Many people are quite perturbed by what they perceive to be the subversion of their democracy by the major political parties, both Republican, and, as I am coming to feel more and more, the Democratic.
If you lend your good name to a panel co-chaired by one of the major players in the Florida debacle of 2000, you might expect to get a few terse messages in your inbox. Just my opinion.

It blows my mind to learn how many of our government officials have not read some of this very important research.
For instance (according to a forum poster at Democratic Underground) on 4/20/05, Howard Dean spoke on Election Reform in Minneapolis and during the Q/A session was asked if he had read John Conyer’s report. Dean’s answer was "no."
WHY NOT??? And he was speaking on Election Reform ???!!! Am I missing something?

Dr. Leavitt #44 – Excellent work Dr. 🙂 To me, it seems that poor Ms. McCoy is out of her depth. I suspect that most of the *advisors* were signed up simple for credibility, and were not expected, or expecting, to actually do any work! 😀
I also suspect that they BADLY underestimated the enormity of the task, and the feelings of "We the people" about this issue. I think they are having a very LARGE wake up call! 😀 They were probably persuaded by Baker and his cronies that the Commission would be "a walk in the park"! Looks like they realize it’s rapidly becoming a hike in the mountains. 😀

I have also sent much of it to my representative, Barney Frank (D-MA); to Mr. Seymour Hersh, great investigative reporter for the New Yorker, who said when he called me back that the story has not been written because it is "too big"; to Jane Mayer, another wonderful New Yorker writer, of the series "Outsourcing Torture", from whom I received no reply; to the dynamic and hard-working Congresswoman from GA, Rep. Today I stuck on "Is that a well-informed finger?" just to confuse the guys in trucks. On the coffin it now reads: "Think Bush was elected? Wanna buy a bridge? Democracyland, USA"
Won’t you join me? It is a great conversation-starter: my price of admission for people who ask the question ("What is it??") is a handout (mine) with lots of the info I sent to Carter, et al, and links to many informative websites, including, of course, BRAD’S.
Anyone who has a refrigerator box, some black and white glossy latex paint, and some elmer’s glue can do it. I will send simple 10 -step directions and photos. If we’re going to be our own media, we need to ADVERTISE!!

Sheila, Apart from anything else, one comment in the McCoy replies struck me as particularly absurd: she claims that it is her private email address! Well, screw that! It is her public email address, and inasmuch as she is at GSU, a public university in the state of Georgia, her email address is not private. It is paid for by the citizens of Georgia, including myself. If she wishes to get GSU strokes and kudos and credit for being an academic advisor to the Committee, and have GSU pay for her PUBLIC email then she also has a responsibility to accept PUBLIC communication via that channel.
I suggest that you copy your correspondence to the Chair of her department, and to the President of GSU, and to anyone else you can think of. Noblesse oblige– "nobility (aka Ivory Tower) obliges" –that with wealth, POWER and PRESTIGE come responsibilities.

I don’t have time tonight to chat – but we have a serious problem in GA with Cathy Blackwell Cox and Meg Smothers the head of GA League of Women Voters.
Smothers has been an important ally for Cox in defending the state’s voting system. Smothers lobbied to defeat a bill this year (2005) that would have required Cox to outfit every voting machine with a printed receipt.

They really need some help designing their web page! But if you can navigate it, they have some interesting information regarding the FOIA requests for 2004 election data. I think if you donate you can see more of what they have collected. I need to donate to them – it’s dispicable that some states/precincts are charging outlandish fees for gathering this data.
Among a laundry list of other things, Cox is refusing to provide a copy of CD data from the election (Diebold machine data) on the grounds that it might threaten our national security and aid a terrorist attack. ??? !!! ??? I don’t know, you tell me. It sounds more and more like a ring of thieves.
Gotta go – y’all save the world! The 6 or 7 Brigade is on the March!

What a ridiculous excuse for a hearing on election reform. Y’all rigged even that! Baker to head it up? Baker? Is this the "fair and balanced" we hear so much about? Surely there is somebody who was not actively involved in making sure votes were not counted in a national election to take the Republican slot. Somebody who could match Jimmy Carter’s legitimacy.
I was at the conference in Nashville, the NATIONAL ELECTION REFORM CONFERENCE. It was held on April 8th, 9th and 10th.
There were lots of people who contributed factual evidence to the group. Why were none of them heard by your commission?
Something stinks in the ’04 election. Y’all are not hearing from the people.
