The Election Assistance Commission has again taken deserved flack for hiding commissioned reports that do not meet the political aims of some. Instead the commission has released versions of the reports that more closely represent those aims. The New York Times reports:

A federal panel responsible for conducting election research played down the findings of experts who concluded last year that there was little voter fraud around the nation, according to a review of the original report obtained by The New York Times. Instead, the panel, the Election Assistance Commission, issued a report that said the pervasiveness of fraud was open to debate.

Meanwhile Congressman Hinchey (D-NY) has said:

The EAC has an obligation to be forthright with the American people and operate transparently and in a non-partisan manner. The draft report was commissioned with taxpayer dollars upon a mandate from Congress so that we could learn more about voter fraud and intimidation.

Meanwhile, Josh Marshall points to a NYT article today which characterizes the extent of most voter fraud that the Republican prosectors found when rejecting cases for trial. As Josh summarizes:

“As those of you who follow this issue know, the vast number of the claims about ‘voter fraud’ are based on poorly kept voter rolls. Joe Smith is registered to vote in New Jersey and New York! The small print is that he lived in New Jersey but then moved to New York. The election board in New Jersey just hasn’t taken him off the rolls yet. It may sound like I’m joking. But most of the scare stories about ‘voter fraud’ are just as stupid as that example.”

      OT:

I often like to watch HARDBALL on MSNBC. Today, I have watched David Gregory and yesterday, Craig Crawford not get ‘IT.’ ‘IT’ being the larger than Imus picture that is at work here. Each network is responsible for its own public image. Do they want to present an image of contributing to the institutionalization of bigotry, mysogeny and racism???

Imus does have a history of such slurs sprinkled throughout his 30 years on the air. To think that this once is not a firing offense is a very narrow view of the matter and this view tacitly approves the routine bigotry of any group of people.

At a time when the whole world is watching us, deciding if they can still approve of us and ally themselves with us as a nation, how we treat our own children, our own citizens, is a critical issue. If we want to be admired as the greatest democracy on Earth, then we must demonstrate in word and deed what it means to have “equality,… liberty and justice for all.”

As Americans, we have serious, dangerous issues caused by bullying in our schools. Anyone remember Columbine? Why would we tacitly approve of institutionalizing bullying polluting the airwaves through frequent bigotry on 61 radio stations and on MSNBC TV every day.

Let Don Imus join Howard Stern on satellite radio where you can hear Imus’ right to free speech exercised, but one must subscribe to it.
