Sean Hannity: Repugnant Liar.

Share article:

So I’m watching Hannity & Colmes tonight and Hannity says something a bit surprising as he’s “interviewing” Newt Gingrich while attempting (successfully) to smear both Kennedy and Kerry in the same fell swoop.

As he looks down at his notes, so I’m assuming he had time to plan this out, Hannity says to Gingrich about a Ted Kennedy speech today at George Washington University on the failures of Bush’s Iraq policy:

HANNITY: Hey actually Ted Kennedy in that speech today (refers to notes) “Those of us who would like to cut and run” — he actually said that.

…and then he moved on to something else. Hit-and-Run Smear Accomplished.

But was it a smear? Would Fox’s bright, shining star and Rush’s heir apparent, Sean Hannity, simply out and out lie like that? And risk the same firing that he’s called upon CBS to do to Dan Rather? I replayed my video tape, and that’s exactly what he had said. But the outrageous charge about Kennedy seemed odd to say the least, so I did some checking on the speech today to find out for sure.

At Senator Ted Kennedy’s site, the text of today’s speech is linked on the front page, and it contains this passage:

No issue is more important today. The battle against terrorism is a battle we must win. Even those who opposed the war in Iraq understand that we cannot cut and run, that this is an American issue. But to remain silent in the face of mounting failures by this President and this White House is to weaken our security even further, and we cannot let that happen.

Seems pretty clear that Kennedy decidedly did not say what Hannity quoted him quite specifically as having said.

But this is the “Fair & Balanced” network! “America’s News Channel of Political Record” as their ads say. Surely Hannity wouldn’t make up such a quote and then claim that Kennedy — and Kerry by extension, who’s position Hannity equated with Kennedy’s — actually felt that way, would he?

Perhaps the text on Kennedy’s site was the original text as planned, but he veered from the text as it was originally written. So I stopped by Hannity & Colmes site for more information. They didn’t have a transcript of tonight’s show yet, but they did have a link to what they called “Raw Data: Kennedy Speech on Iraq War” which has a paragraph similar to the one above, but curiously, it’s missing the “cut and run” section entirely! Here’s what they have:

No issue is more important today. The battle against terrorism is a battle we must win. To remain silent in the face of mounting failures by this president and this White House is to weaken our security even further.

Hmmm…did Fox have a different version of the speech? A transcript they took themselves perhaps during the actual presentation of the speech? Even so, there seemed nothing about “Those of us who would like to cut and run”. There was nothing about either cutting or running in Fox News’ transcript.

I kept looking, and finally found over at C-Span the video of the actual speech, as given by Ted Kennedy today.

Some of the text did veer slightly from the version on Kennedy’s website. A word or two. But nothing like what either Hannity or the Fox News site described. Here’s what Kennedy said verbatim (at 4:18 on the tape):

No issue is more important today. The battle against terrorism is a battle that we must win. Even those of us who opposed the Iraq war understand that we cannot cut and run, that this is an American committment. But to remain silent in the face of mounting failures by this President and this White House is to weaken our security even further, and we cannot let that happen.

Are these guys that desperate to win that they’d just make stuff up out of whole cloth? Apparently so. We’ve been covering here John McCaslin of The Washington Times, the newspaper equivalent of “Fair and Balanced” Fox, who has been doing exactly that. And so does Hannity. Almost every day.

Please remember that this is the man who has been calling for criminal investigations in the CBS document matter, along with the resignation of Dan Rather virtually every day he’s been on the air — on both his radio and TV shows — since that story originally aired.

Lesson: Sean Hannity will say anything, do anything, smear anybody and lie about anything to keep his man in office. And the good news for him and the America he claims to love? He gets to do it five nights a week on the country’s most watched News channel. Period.

As a side note, I also watched Kennedy’s Q&A after his speech, just to make sure the phrase that Hannity made up wasn’t said there or something. I didn’t see it. But I did see Kennedy ironically mention, about the Bush Team and their continued campaign of lies, distortions and smears about Kerry: “You don’t expect this to be done at the presidential level. To mis-represent and distort your opponents positions.”

Rely on it Senator.

Mr. Hannity, correct the “mistake” and apologize to Sen. Kennedy on the air the way you’ve insisted that Rather apology to Bush. Set the example, Mr. Hannity.

Please hold him to it, Mr. Colmes.

Hannity represents the very worst that America has to offer. When he cannot rely on facts, he makes up lies to smear the opposition. And what does he get out of it?? For what price has he sold out his soul?? Money?? Power?? Surely not to promote his religion, which expressly forbids this sort of lying. Hannity represents "false prophets" and his actions are reprehensible.

    You are precisely correct, Mark.

And the worst news about it, he is featured on the Number #1 News Channel in the country, and on about 15 million listeners radio dials every day.

The influence of his lies are tremendous. Please write to the addres I gave in the item to express your feelings!

    Brad,
Hannity lies, distorts, manipulates, and fabricates any controversial topic without any critical thinking or research on his part. He simply plays to the hysterical right and provides NO balance… Somebody ought to replace Alan Colmes because he does not challenge Hannity. Sorry, Alan. People need to wake up, educate themselves, and not rely on some idiot radio talk show host to tell them how to think.
Thank you, Brad, for informing the public of what a true pig Hannity is.

Liberals — wrong, wrong and wrong again
    Larry Elder (archive)

    March 17, 2005

Thirty-five percent of Americans, according to a 2004 Pew Research survey, call themselves conservative, while only 22 percent call themselves liberal (43 percent call themselves moderate) — a 3 percent increase in conservatives since 1992. There is a reason for this — liberals keep getting it wrong.

The war in Iraq: "Week after week after week after week," said Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., in October 2003, "we were told lie after lie after lie after lie." Kennedy called Iraq a "quagmire," predicting it will turn into "Bush’s Vietnam." Now what?

Eight million Iraqis voted in their election over seven weeks ago. Protesters in Lebanon demanded the withdrawal of Syrian troops and agents. Egypt committed to, and Saudi Arabia conducted, elections, however flawed. Elections in the Palestinian territories produced a new leader who — at least for now — speaks of a peaceful two-state solution. So what does Sen. Kennedy say now?

"This Week’s" George Stephanopoulos asked Kennedy whether President Bush deserves credit for democratic developments in the Middle East. Kennedy replied, "Absolutely, absolutely, and I think . . . what’s taken place in a number of those countries is enormously constructive. It’s a reflection the president has been involved." Well, well. Oh, sure, Kennedy talked about the number of Americans killed every day in Iraq, and that we need to figure out a way of withdrawing U.S. troops, but nothing about "quagmire."

Add another notch to the belt of discredited liberal policies. Let’s go to the videotape.

Ronald Reagan’s tax cuts: Critics claimed the Reagan tax cuts would stunt economic growth, while triggering inflation and higher interest rates. Inflation fell from 12.5 percent in 1980 to 3.9 percent in 1984, interest rates declined, and economic growth went from minus 0.2 percent in 1980 to plus 7.3 percent in 1984.

Race-based preferences: The Detroit News examined seven Michigan colleges and universities. They found that — within six years — blacks graduate at a rate of 40 percent compared to 61 percent for whites and 74 percent for Asians. Lowering admission standards indeed boosted racial diversity, at the expense of a greater possibility of minority students dropping out. "The state’s universities have special programs aimed at helping black students meet financial, social and academic challenges," wrote the Detroit News, "but graduation rates for blacks haven’t improved consistently. . . . Universities knowingly admit students who have a high chance of failing. . . . The 10 years’ worth of data analyzed by The News shows that the more selective a university is in choosing its students, the more likely its students are to graduate."

Strategic Defense Initiative: When President Reagan first proposed SDI, the media called it fanciful, dismissing it as "Star Wars." According to Accuracy in Media, "During one six-month period commencing in December 1991, the [New York] Times ran 17 anti-SDI articles, op-ed pieces and editorials denouncing SDI as, among other things, a ‘bizarre, costly concoction . . . science fiction . . . lunacy . . . sheer fantasy . . . ‘ The Times gave front-page space to Teddy Kennedy’s Senate speech deriding SDI as ‘Star Wars,’ likening the idea to a science fiction movie or a video arcade game, and providing SDI foes their slogan-of-choice." Yet, of the last six Interceptor Missile tests, five successfully intercepted another missile. Parts of SDI have already been employed in Japan, in a cooperative U.S.-Japan Theater Missile Defense program.

Welfare reform: In 1996, President Clinton signed the Welfare Reform Act, after twice vetoing similarly worded bills. Presidential adviser Dick Morris warned Clinton that his 1996 re-election turned on signing this bill. Marian Wright Edelman, president of the Children’s Defense Fund, castigated welfare reform, calling it, "the biggest betrayal of children and the poor since the CDF began." Congressman John Lewis, D-Ga., said it is "mean, it is base, it is low-down." In the following years, welfare rolls fell by 50 percent

Charity: In "The Tragedy of American Compassion," author Marvin Olasky writes that charity works best when done by people rather than by government, and that government programs foster dependency rather than self-reliance. Olasky writes that unemployed workers often tried seven alternatives, sequentially, before applying for government aid, including private benefits, credit, savings, loans or gifts from friends and family, and so on. As far back as 1766, Ben Franklin said, "I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it . . . the more public provisions were made for the poor the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer."

Minimum wage: These laws destroy jobs. Nobel laureate economist Milton Friedman says about the minimum wage, "Minimum wage laws cost jobs. Employers cut out, or mechanize, jobs that are not worth the minimum rate to them. Worst affected are the inexperienced young people, those with poor skills, and minorities."

Of the major domestic and national security issues of the last several decades, liberals consistently got it wrong, wrong and wrong again!

Sharpton: Dems take Blacks for granted
    Larry Elder (archive)

    August 4, 2005

The Democratic Party takes blacks for granted, according to former Democratic Party presidential candidate Rev. Al Sharpton.

Never mind that each one of the 2004 Democratic presidential candidates pledged to support race-based preferences. Or that the Democratic Party agrees with the NAACP’s opposition to vouchers, arguing that they threaten a child’s ability to get a good education. Or that the Democratic Party, like the Congressional Black Caucus, the NAACP and the Urban League, all support some form of Hillary-Care.

Take blacks for granted? Democratic candidates, almost on cue, troop down to black churches around election time, precisely so that no one argues that the candidate takes blacks for granted. On taxes, spending, race-based preferences, skepticism about the War in Iraq and opposition to private Social Security savings accounts, the Democratic Party takes the position held by most blacks, and most blacks take the position held by the Democratic Party. What’s left? Reparations for slavery?

Given Sharpton’s newfound disgust for the Democratic Party, does this mean he suggests that blacks reconsider their monolithic Democratic votes, and open their minds and hearts to the Republican Party?

The Republicans, after all, long advocated vouchers, at least on a limited basis, for failing inner-city schools. A 1999 Harvard University study on the Cleveland, Ohio, voucher program found voucher parents more satisfied with their kids’ education than public school parents. In Milwaukee, Wisconsin — home of the nation’s oldest and largest urban voucher program — students involved must come from low-income families, with many minority students coming from broken homes. In Milwaukee, 64 percent of students using a voucher to enter ninth grade in 1999 graduated in 2003, compared to 36 percent of Milwaukee public school students. The six Milwaukee public high schools that have academic admission requirements — as do many private schools — only had a 41 percent graduation rate. In an NPR interview in January 2003, Sharpton said, "I believe in public education, do not believe in going into privatization, whether that be through vouchers or other schemes." Will he reconsider?

Studies show that lowering college admission standards increases the chances that an "affirmative action" admittee drops out. In 2001, the Detroit News compared graduation rates at seven Michigan colleges and universities, and found that, within six years, blacks graduate at a rate of 40 percent compared to 61 percent for whites and 74 percent for Asians. Despite programs "aimed at helping black students meet financial, social and academic challenges," the News found that "[u]niversities knowingly admit students who have a high chance of failing. . . . The 10 years worth of data analyzed by The News shows that the more selective a university is in choosing its students, the more likely its students are to graduate." Can we expect Sharpton to reconsider his position on preferences?

About taxes, President John F. Kennedy said, "[I]t is a paradoxical truth that tax rates are too high today and tax revenues are too low — and the soundest way to raise revenues in the long run is to cut rates now." About President Bush’s tax cuts, even The Washington Post, in an editorial, called the cuts "fortuitously well timed." Sharpton once criticized Bush’s tax cuts for "the wealthy," and said, "George Bush giving tax breaks is like Jim Jones giving Kool-Aid. It tastes good, but it’ll kill you." With inflation low, interest rates modest, a declining deficit and 5 percent unemployment, will Sharpton reconsider?

Blacks living in the inner city disproportionately suffer from crime. Studies show that in the 34 "shall issue" states where citizens may obtain permits for concealed weapons, crime declined in 31 of them — with the remaining three so recently becoming "shall issue" states that no definitive studies are available yet. Residents of Washington, D.C., a city that’s 60 percent black, live under some of the nation’s most restrictive anti-gun laws. Any civilian D.C. resident who owns a handgun — unless registered before 1976 — commits a crime. The laws require that owners keep their guns unloaded and disassembled or trigger-locked in the home. Yet Washington, D.C., per capita, suffers from an extremely high murder rate. Bad guys don’t walk into gun stores, politely fill out registration forms, and then use those very same guns in crime. Gun control hurts the most vulnerable of Americans — those living in urban areas. In a 2003 presidential debate, Rev. Al said, "I think that we must do whatever we can to regulate how guns are used." Will he reconsider?

Recall Sharpton began his career by falsely accusing a former assistant district attorney of rape. Sharpton’s M.O. is simple: blame the White Man; blame the System; continue a status quo defense of government schools; bash the police; demand handouts, programs, set-asides, loans and grants for "the disadvantaged."

The Democratic Party says to blacks, "You’re a victim. We’re here to help." Does Sharpton have the guts to turn to his party’s leadership and say, "Stop treating us like victims"? When and if that happens, some will wonder whether Al’s been drinking Jim Jones’ Kool-Aid.

    This site is completely ridiculous!

Liberals keep whining and crying when someone with the truth grab ahold of the bully pulpit (ie Rush, Sean, GWBush). And they kick and scream until someone recognizes their outrageous behaviors. Kind of like my three year old son.

My prayer is that conservatives will rise up in the next year and vote out as many liberals as possible. I am holding out hope in my home state that Grand Dragon Robert Byrd will face his political end. I cannot wait until Billionaire JayJay suffers the same political demise.

Don’t you poor Sheep on the right know he is a slimey Lawyer and uses those slimey tactics when he "interviews" people on that joke of a show "Hannity and Colmes"? Being a Crook 101, the first course of study for a Slimey Lawyer teaches you to phrase a question in such a manner you can’t possibly answer it, such as, "Just answer the Question Sir, a simple Yes or No will do". Now think if I asked a Slimey Lawyer like Mr. Hannitythis question, "Have you come out of the closet yet Sean, just a simple yes or no will do Sir". You know, I would like to hear his answer to that one, he does have a sweet look that may reveal the answer to that question. Of course, Mr. Hannity might resort to telling a lie too. 😎 I think it is safe to say that Sean Hannity is very ill-informed. I don’t agree with most of the things he says. I think that he is an ignorant moron and really not a very good conservative. Rarely does he talk about tax policy, what areas of government could go for cutting or how to increase business opportunities in the U.S. Instead, he goes for the low brow, inane, wholly unimportant things, such as what Oprah Winfrey said on her show, what Cindy Sheehan is up to, and trying to strong arm his enemies into alligning themselves with the likes of Osama Bin Laden. I’m not a Ted Kennedy person, but I must say that some of the crticisms of anti-americanism Hannity has thrown at him are disgusting. To Hannity and his listeners–most of whom have a poor grasp of issues, attacking people is tantamout to solving problems. I also think he should sign up for the military, too if he thinks our unconstitutional war is all that worth it.

Well Tony, at least you admit it, now if all your CONServative buddies would just get a clue too. I went to Public school too Tony, but it looks like I stayed awake.

Thanks guys, I think it’s great that a couple die hard liberals will help an ignorant conservative like me with my spelling and punctuation. All name calling aside, I have a question. Why is it that when people like Alec Baldwin make outrageous statements like wanting to stone henry hyde to death and then kill his wife and kids, and that the war in iraq is halliburtin’s shooting gallery and that our president is a mass murderer, you treat him like a hero? You’ll call someone like Hannity a repugnant liar when I’ve never heard him say anything as outrageous as the things that Alec Baldwin says. I would think that the democratic party would want to distance themselves from people like that if they want to get anywhere politically.

Sean Hannity is an intellectual dwarf, at least Rush can make his show more entertaining whether you agree or disagree with what he’s saying. Neither of these guys can compare to William F Buckley Jr in terms of intelligence. Even when I disagree with an issue, William Buckley at least presents well-thought out points, and I respect him for that.

I wish we could have a more intelligent debate on issues instead of the fast-food "news" that Fox presents.

Tony, please scroll up and see who called anyone a name. I do believe it’s you. As too the Moderate, I agree, a civil debate would be nice and we used to have them, even as recently as the Reagan years. Tip O’neil and Reagan were genuine friends in real life. It has been since the Conservative talk radio gang took over that all agreement seems to have been forgotten. Robert Michael, a Republican from Illinois said it best when he decided to retire and not run again. He said in all his 37 years, he had never seen the dirty tactics that had taken over both partys. It’s no longer enough to win, you have to try and destroy your opponent in the process. It’s not just the people across the isle either, look at what our fearless leader did in 2000 with John McCain. Not to mention what was done to Kerry with his war record. It’s like the "mob" that were upset in the 2000 elections in Fl. and wanted the recount stopped, seems in the picture that was taken, they were all republicans which the "Liberal" press didn’t mention. Had it been Clintons cock, wow would they have been all over that. All I’m saying is, before we call each other names, let’s at least listen to what the facts are, if we ever are fed the facts. Not likely with any form of media today.

WE might not be able to agree on politics but at least we can agree on the fact that no media outlet is gonna give us all the facts. Just to set the record straight im not just a blind supporter of the GOP and president bush. I have quite a few issues with some of the things that are going on today but my values are definitly conservative. We are not all mind numbed robots.

Tony, I never did think you were a mind numbed Robot, which is a Rush Limbaugh word, of which he’s SO proud of. This is the same Blow Hard that accuses the Liberals of Name Calling. What about his current Dingy Harry diatribe? You do have the same qualities I have, you want what;s best for our well being. This talk about anyone that doesn’t support BUSH is not a patriot is BS. I served my country in 69-71. I did leave the country, unlike our present Commander-inChief. This guy calls me someone that hates my country, he has a lot of BALLS. That’s what pisses me off about this Guy, he never served, took a walk and sends the National Guard to do what he was afraid to do.
I’m sorry, but I have nothing but absolute disdain for this COWARD. He’s a silver spooned little Yale Skull Headed Preppie. He’s useless.
