Olmert, who like Bush lacks direct wartime experience, agreed that a dose of military force against Hezbollah might damage the guerrilla group’s influence in Lebanon and intimidate its allies, Iran and Syria, countries that Bush has identified as the chief obstacles to U.S. interests in the Middle East.
As part of Bush’s determination to create a “new Middle East” – one that is more amenable to U.S. policies and desires – Bush even urged Israel to attack Syria, but the Olmert government refused to go that far, according to Israeli sources.

It's strange to see even Hersch falling for a "little white lie" about how the Israel-Lebanon war started:
In the days after Hezbollah crossed from Lebanon into Israel, on July 12th, to kidnap two soldiers, triggering an Israeli air attack on Lebanon and a full-scale war, the Bush Administration seemed strangely passive. “It’s a moment of clarification,” President George W. Bush said at the G-8 summit, in St. Petersburg, on July 16th. “It’s now become clear why we don’t have peace in the Middle East.”
WhatReallyHappened.Com has posted an extremely convincing argument, based on the earliest reports from a wide variety of international news services, which shows that the two Israeli soldiers who were supposedly "kidnapped" in Israel were in fact captured while on a cross-border raid in Lebanon.

Despite my misgivings about this one detail --- which has been immortalized almost everywhere, including the UN ceasefire resolution --- I think there's plenty of good stuff in Hersch's article.
But I could be wrong. He uses a lot of anonymous sources and there's a chance any of them could be lying.

At what point do we realize that these people have crossed a line way past just a criminal enterprise into something MUCH more deadly.
If they are allowed to change the law retro-actively, then the "rule of law" as we know it no longer exists --- anybody with control of the government can make ANYTHING THEY HAVE EVER DONE perfectly legal.

WP --- The articles you link to point to the same conclusion - that the "War on Terror" is a phony scheme to consolidate class power and to generate huge profits for a small number of people for years to come. (Considering Chris Floyd's second article, it is clear that the corporate elite have given up on bringing much of the population into the fold - really, all pretense that it is not class tyranny has been given up except in the most crude propagandistic way possible.)
The fear-mongerers are direct descendants of those who incessantly intoned about the "communist menace", the result of which propaganda built up the military/industrial complex, laid the groundwork for the destruction of democracy, and led us into morally unconsionable adventures and crimes. (It did not have to be.)
My opinion is that we should not perpetuate the acceptance of the "War on Terror" lie in even the smallest way and should change the Brad Blog "category for similar items" to something like "So-Called War of Terror". Just a suggestion. It's not my blog, but I have a avuncular interest in it.

You guys are on to something of great importance. They are trying their slimey best to keep this story under the radar. We need to make noise and at least make the attempt to force scrutiny of the issue. Email Dobbs, Obberman local papers etc. I know all of us have felt impotent in influencing the MSM, but as of late there has been a willingness to air this type of activity. What say you guys? I can't speak for anyone but myself but I'm damn tired of talking, I want to take a few swings at bat.

Demand that the DNC grow some balls and offically dump the SOB from the party. Yeah, I know how most of us feel about the DNC but we do not have time for Third Party or other alternatives. It's not just war crimes legislation that attempts to make retroactively legal what was illegal. Arlen Specter and other Republicans are attempting to do the same thing with warrantless wiretapping. It's a trend. What, they don't think we'll catch on?

Our local letters to the editor section is getting smaller and smaller as the county has been taken over by development interests where "feel good" is everything, so they may nor publish it (as they haven't my last two letters), but I'll spread a wider net to get the word out. Disturbing but not at all suprising. This is why we see a reluctance on the part of media to aggressively seek the truth. This poor guy is off the beaten path which emboldened the officers to feel safe in using strong arm tactics. I personnally feel that if the truth were known other no less threatening but more subtle varations have been used against the MSM. As disgusted as I have become with them I can not believe that they are all rightwing, stupid and/or slimey. If any of us can figure out how to get this story broader exposure it could help these and others find cover and support. Thanks for the heads up.

This is an odd thing,..
A mystery animal was found in a rural area in central Maine, near Lewiston/Auburn, a town about 35 to 40
miles north of Portland. This thing (mutant/hybrid) was chasing a cat and got hit by a car,.. scientific studies will be done to determine what this thing was.

media article which addressed this issue in the USA.
Forbes Magazine via the Associated Press,.. July 12, 2006 at 6:48 AM. This was right at the outset of this event having transpired,.. the facts not yet massaged
by the America or Israeli press. It was almost immediately determined that this "kidnapped" Israeli soldier "event" was just the excuse that was needed to enact the "Clean Break Plan." a "counter military attack" could now be put into motion - "WITH FULL JUSTIFICATIONS".
Israel/USA - now just had to bent/twist/contort the facts to exonerate themselves from this military adventure against Lebanon. The two Israeli soldiers were not "captured" but rather "KIDNAPPED". The location of the taking of these Israeli soldiers were not inside the Lebanon boarder,.. but rather,.. the Hezbollah "leftist" "guerrillas" crossed the boarder into Israel,.. took the soldiers and them spirited back across the boarder into Lebanon. Under this false scenario Hezbollah is guilty of two infractions of international standards,.. 1. they crossed the boarder into sovereign Israeli territory. 2. They then captured "KIDNAPPED" them from the soil of the Israeli homeland. The fascist/corporate media just had to regurgitate this bogus story,.. and Israel now had FULL JUSTIFICATION to "counter attack" with the full blessings of the world body.

A secret meeting was to take place between Hamas and
leaders of a Reformist group of Rabbis to return the Israeli soldier captured in Gaza. The Israeli government did not want this meeting to achieve peace with Hamas,.. derailed the secret settlement meetings and lashed out to attack Hamas and Hezbollah with overwhelming unjustifiable military interventions.
The meeting was to announce a joint Israeli-Palestinian call for the release of Corporal Gilad Shalit who had been abducted by Hamas in Gaza, along with proposals for the beginning of the release of all Palestinian prisoners. These measures were to precipitate unprecedented new peace negotiations on a framework peace agreement, drawn on the 1967 borders. The presence of Palestinian Cabinet Officers and senior Israeli religious leaders in contact with the Prime Minster was to underline the seriousness of this peace proposal on both sides.
Just hours before the meeting was due to start, the Israeli Shin Bet internal Security Service arrested Abu Tir and Abu Arafa and warned them not to attend the meeting, under threats of detention. The meeting, which offered a major opportunity to obtain Shalit’s release and launch a new framework for peace, was thrown into disarray. The next day, the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) invaded Gaza, and the day after both Abu Tir and Abu Arafa were abducted by Israeli forces, along with a third of the Palestinian Cabinet, provoking a predictable escalation of violence.
Israel simultaneously began conducting covert incursions on to Lebanese territory, provoking Hizbollah’s capture of two IDF soldiers. Credible sources confirm that the soldiers were not abducted on Israeli territory, but inside Lebanon. Like the scuppered peace negotiations, Western officials have ignored this, and misinformed the media. However, some reports corroborate the sources. Israeli officials, for instance, informed Forbes (12.7.06) that “Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers during clashes Wednesday across the border in southern Lebanon, prompting a swift reaction from Israel.”
“The revelations show that Palestinian and Lebanese actors were not principally responsible for the escalation of the current conflict”, said OI Director Graham Ennis. “Contrary to the misinformation disseminated by the Whitehouse and Whitehall, Israel vetoed unprecedented peace proposals that would have initiated a promising new framework for serious negotiations, and went on to provoke Palestinian and Lebanese groups into retaliations, that now threaten to escalate into a dangerous regional conflict.”

Official justification for Israel's invasion on thin ice

As Lebanon continues to be pounded by Israeli bombs and munitions, the justification for Israel's invasion is treading on very thin ice. It has become general knowledge that it was Hezbollah guerrillas that first kidnapped two IDF soldiers inside Israel on July 12, prompting an immediate and violent response from the Israeli government, which insists it is acting in the interest of national defense. Israeli forces have gone on to kill over 370 innocent Lebanese civilians (compared to 34 killed on Israel's side) while displacing hundreds of thousands more. But numerous reports from international and independent media, as well as the Associated Press, raise questions about Israel's official version of the events that sparked the conflict two weeks ago.
The original story, as most media tell it, goes something like this: Hezbollah attacked an Israeli border patrol station, killing six and taking two soldiers hostage. The incident happened on the Lebanese/Israel border in Israeli territory. The alternate version, as explained by several news outlets, tells a bit of a different tale: These sources contend that Israel sent a commando force into southern Lebanon and was subsequently attacked by Hezbollah near the village of Aitaa al-Chaab, well inside Lebanon's southern territory. It was at this point that an Israel tank was struck by Hezbollah fighters, which resulted in the capture of two Israeli soldiers and the death of six.
As the AFP reported, "According to the Lebanese police force, the two Israeli soldiers were captured in Lebanese territory, in the area of Aitaa al-Chaab, near to the border with Israel, where an Israeli unit had penetrated in middle of morning." And the French news site www.VoltaireNet.org reiterated the same account on June 18, "In a deliberated way, [Israel] sent a commando in the Lebanese back-country to Aitaa al-Chaab. It was attacked by Hezbollah, taking two prisoners."
The Associated Press departed from the official version as well. "The militant group Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers during clashes Wednesday across the border in southern Lebanon, prompting a swift reaction from Israel, which sent ground forces into its neighbor to look for them," reported Joseph Panossian for AP on July 12. "The forces were trying to keep the soldiers' captors from moving them deeper into Lebanon, Israeli government officials said on condition of anonymity."
And the Hindustan Times on July 12 conveyed a similar account:
"The Lebanese Shi'ite Hezbollah movement announced on Wednesday that its guerrillas have captured two Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon. 'Implementing our promise to free Arab prisoners in Israeli jails, our strugglers have captured two Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon,' a statement by Hezbollah said. 'The two soldiers have already been moved to a safe place,' it added. The Lebanese police said that the two soldiers were captured as they 'infiltrated' into the town of Aitaa al-Chaab inside the Lebanese border."
Whether factual or not, these alternative accounts should at the very least raise serious questions as to Israel's motives and rationale for bombarding Lebanon.
MSNBC online first reported that Hezbollah had captured Israeli soldiers "inside" Lebanon, only to change their story hours later after the Israeli government gave an official statement to the contrary.
A report from The National Council of Arab Americans, based in Lebanon, also raised suspicion that Israel's official story did not hold water and noted that Israel had yet to recover the tank that was demolished during the initial attack in question.
"The Israelis so far have not been able to enter Aitaa al-Chaab to recover the tank that was exploded by Hezbollah and the bodies of the soldiers that were killed in the original operation (this is a main indication that the operation did take place on Lebanese soil, not that in my opinion it would ever be an illegitimate operation, but still the media has been saying that it was inside 'Israel' thus an aggression first started by Hezbollah)."
Before independent observers could organize an investigation of the incident, Israel had already mounted a grisly offensive against Lebanese infrastructure and civilians, bombing Beirut's international airport, along with numerous highways and communication portals. Israel didn't need the truth of the matter to play out before it invaded Lebanon. As with the United States' illegitimate invasion of Iraq, Israel just needed the proper media cover to wage a war with no genuine moral impetus.

If it is the case, I think it is on the whole good. It will be rough, but I think the beast must be visible as a necessary step toward overcoming it. In fact, some intrepid souls must (very intelligently, of course) entice it out into the open, goad it on to display it's true colors. Sorry to say that, but I think it's true. (The great misstep has been that it is often done stupidly, in a way that actually gains some sympathy for the beast.)
Big Dan --- #53 --- I look at that statement as a threat, too, although I don't know if Orrin Hatch, who appears to genuinely not be very bright, sees its true nature. I always thought Gen. Franks statement that the Constitution would not likely survive a WMD attack and that a military government would be established to be a threat couched as discussion. Because who would be bringing us into a post-Constitutional world? It wouldn't be me. It wouldn't be you. Franks should have been fired or demoted, as he swore to defend the Constitution.
We have to bury these fear-mongerers. The American people have to bury them. And we have to be prepared for another "terrorist" attack to the point where we know it won't be the end of our efforts but the beginning of another phase --- raising it to another level.

It's drifted away from good stories years ago like,I was raised in a pig pen by a family of pigs until I was 12. Read somewhere that Cheney has hired the same lawyer Clinton had for the impeachment fiasco. I think warantless wire tapping will bring them down. You know how most blue haired ladies have a cute little poodle they generally name FiFi or some dip-shit sort of name,.. they usually put them in a Gucci bag and parade them around the golf course and the grocery store so that everyone can envy and adore their precious little bundle of love.
Well not Madame - The Lady Barbara Bitchbu$$h no pinko poodles for this female version of Ghengis Khan,.. no yappy lapdogs for this macho-mom. At family picnics and gatherings she sends the kids out on the the grounds of their palatial ocean-side estate under the "guise" of just going out to "play". She then sends the grounds keeper down to the basement to release 10 to 15 of these vicious "animal things" on the children. Barb stands back at the kitchen window and watches as these vicious animals - (hyena/rabid coyote/distempered wolves - hybrid blends) laden with mange,.. fleas,.. ticks,.. and worms - mangles,.. tears apart,.. and devours her grand-children and great-grand-children. She calls this bloody mayhem - bonding with family and her precious little one. She doesn't even bother to call her relatives by their first names - she calls them "my little munchkins",.. "my little food pellets" and if in a particularly cantankerous,.. "my little wolf bait".
If you get an embossed invitation for a summer picnic or some such event - it is highly recommended up in these here parts that you just ignore the offer and under no circumstances should you RSVP.
Is it any wonder her children are so Fucked-Up ?

Think I got the right one now,.. I know how you like to keep things nice and tidy. Can your magic fingers move this up to (C) # 84 where it belongs ? {Yes. Done.}
Incidentally,.. A-99 sometimes I can't check it,.. the link does not show up in the comment preview box,.. at other times the comment preview box never shows up,.. one other thing that happens if you have multiple links to confirm prior to posting,.. if you check the first link,.. the preview box then disappears then you can not check link 2 or link 3 before you hit the submit button. It is like after the fact (of posting)then you can confirm the link is correct,.. then it is too late. Unless A-99 comes to the rescue. Mention made in the event you are not aware or can recommend a remedy to avoid the mini difficulty.

I haven't watched corporate news in a long time. They're probably talking about Jon Bonet Ramsey's killer.
I'm still watching LINK-TV & FSTV, they are addictive! On the INN Report today, they said that contrary to what the mainstream corporate media is telling us, that Mexico's "recount" was the same as the original count, in the small portion of the recount, they found something like 60,000 "stuffed" ballots and 60,000 "stolen" ballots, all against the liberal candidate. Whoever they were interviewing, said "the fix was in long ago." The latest INN Report is not available yet, but you can still watch it today on FSTV.
