'BradCast' 11/1/2022 (Guest: Theeda Murphy of No Exceptions Prison Collective on slavery-related propositions on midterm ballots)

11-01-2022 (53.26 MB)

On today's 'BradCast': The November 8 midterm elections are critical for the survival of American democracy itself, the most important elections since the Civil War. And ending slavery and involuntary servitude are literally on the ballot. THEEDA MURPHY, Co-Director of the No Exceptions Prison Collective, a non-profit, grassroots initiative based in Nashville, TN, explains how voters in Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee, Oregon and Vermont will consider statewide ballot propositions to amend their state constitutions to remove language that allows prisoners to be subject to involuntary servitude and forced labor, a modern-day version of slavery.  In a fascinating discussion, Murphy explains the history of the post-Civil War Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery 'EXCEPT as a punishment for crime,' how it has been disproportionately exercised against Black Americans, and how the state-level propositions can be used to build a movement in Congress and nationally to remove the Thirteenth Amendment loophole allowing involuntary servitude. Also today: Chief Justice John Roberts on Donald Trump's stolen, packed and corrupted Supreme Court placed a temporary administrative hold on an appeals court ruling requiring the I.R.S to turn over Trump's tax returns to a Congressional oversight committee, as required by law - - the hold delays action until after the Nov. 8 election and could help Trump escape accountability entirely. The Supreme Court ruled that Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) must testify to a Georgia special grand jury about his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, but left open some doors for Graham to further evade and delay.
