'BradCast' 9/18/2023 (Guest: Labor historian Nelson Lichtenstein on the UAW strike and the U.S. labor movement rising)

09-18-2023 (53.11 MB)

On today's 'BradCast':  For the first time in decades, the organized labor movement is on the rise, with a summer of unionization drives from workers at fast food restaurants, huge companies like Amazon, and writers and actors. Now the United Auto Workers (UAW) has launched a strike, for the first time in history, at all three major automakers simultaneously, seeking better wages and working conditions after decades of concessions to keep the industry afloat (even as CEO compensation has risen 40 percent in five years), and protections for workers at new electric vehicle battery plants. UC Santa Barbara labor historian Dr. NELSON LICHTENSTEIN explains the specific concerns of autoworker unions, how 2023's summer of unionization compares to prior waves of union organizing in the US, the political implications of unionization and the UAW strike going forward, and much more. Also today:  cartoonishly corrupt Republican Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, acquitted by the GOP-dominated state senate. Five Americans detained for years in Iran are headed back to the US. The warring factions of the GOP-controlled U.S. House failed to reach agreement on a bill to fund government operations, bringing a costly government shutdown closer to reality.
