'BradCast' 8/2/2022 (Guest: George Beebe of the Quincy Institute on the Russia-Ukraine war)

08-02-2022 (53.49 MB)

On today's 'BradCast':  Voters headed to the polls on Tuesday in Arizona, Kansas, Ohio, Michigan, Missouri and Washington, with a whole bunch of far-right, Trump-backed, 2020 election deniers on the ballot running for critical offices in which they could cause very serious problems for democracy itself in 2024. Russia's brutal invasion of its sovereign neighbor Ukraine is now entering the sixth horrific month, and on Monday, a UN-brokered agreement finally allowed ships carrying Ukrainian grain to safely leave port to deliver food to the world. If the agreement holds, agriculture shipments will be able to alleviate rising global food prices, hunger and political instability in developing nations. But in the long term, some foreign policy experts are calling on the U.S. to encourage a negotiated settlement to end the seemingly intractable conflict. Foreign policy expert GEORGE BEEBE, of the non-partisan Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, explains the current status of the conflict, the difficult and nuanced questions regarding potential paths forward, how and under what conditions a diplomatic settlement might be possible, and much more. Beebe also offers insight into nuanced issues raised by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan on Tuesday. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest 'Green News Report.'
