'BradCast' 4/27/2022 (Guest: Redistricting expert David Daley on GOP courts helping to gerrymander 'red' states)

04-27-2022 (53.22 MB)

On today's 'BradCast':  In the corporate media's strenuous efforts to avoid using the word 'steal', The Hill today gently called new evidence documenting the failed Trump/GOP scheme to steal the 2020 Presidential election an attempt to 'unwind' it. Redistricting expert DAVID DALEY of FairVote explains recent court rulings on last-minute efforts, primarily in Republican-controlled states, to game the 2022 midterm elections with outrageously partisan gerrymandering of U.S. House maps. Daley walks through a number of such cases in several states where courts are helping Republicans undermine the very voter-approved independent redistricting commissions that were intended to prevent the gerrymandering that Republicans have enacted in their redistricted maps. In Ohio, despite court orders to draw districts reflecting the state's roughly 50-50 partisan balance, Republicans are running out the clock to keep maps that give themselves a 13-2 advantage. In an outrageous power grab in Florida, GOP presidential hopeful Gov. Ron DeSantis drew his own district maps to eliminate two Black-majority districts and give Republicans more than double the seats of Democrats. Daley also delves into how the rightwing majority on the US Supreme Court has 'put its foot on the scale' to cheat Black voters out of representation in Alabama and Wisconsin. Daley warns that Democratic partisan gerrymandering is not enough to counter Republicans' years-long advantage in redistricting state legislatures, and calls for Democrats to pass national legislation to outlaw it, along with other 'constitutional hardball' tactics to save democracy. Also today: New York State's high court blocked a Democratic-gerrymandered legislative maps in a new ruling handed down today.
