'BradCast' 4/15/2021 (Guest: LA Times Michael Hiltzik on corporations pretending to defend democracy)

On today's 'BradCast': The Biden Administration announced new sanctions against Russian business and individuals in retaliation for the massive Solar Winds hack of federal agencies, and for interfering in the 2020 election on behalf of Donald Trump. Notable in the sanctions is the Treasury Department's confirmation that Trump's first 2016 campaign manager, Paul Manafort, shared proprietary polling information with Russian operative Konstanin Kilimnik, who gave it directly to Russian Intelligence Services, raising questions as to why the information is only now coming out. Then: MICHAEL HILTZIK, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and business columnist at the Los Angeles Times, discusses a two-page ad signed by hundreds of companies and corporate CEOs and published in major papers this week, declaring 'WE STAND FOR DEMOCRACY' in criticizing the tsunami of new voter suppression laws being passed in Republican-controlled state legislatures across the nation. Hiltzik explains the recent history of such pronouncements by large corporations purporting to support voting rights and democracy, adding new reporting on which corporations are adhering to their declarations, and notes there are no substitutes for actual action. He also covers how these very same companies have tried to squash the concept of 'shareholder democracy' within their own corporate organizations, and why unions should be allowed to make political campaign contributions, but not corporations. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest 'Green News Report.'
