'BradCast' 3/26/2020: (GOPers work to suppress the vote amid global pandemic)

03-26-2020 (53.53 MB)

On today's 'BradCast':  Our elections this year are most definitely in peril. Elections officials are frantically, and justifiably, moving towards Vote-by-Mail over coronavirus risks. But never underestimate the GOP scheming going on right now to devise ways of ensuring their efforts at voter suppression can continue, even amid a global pandemic – the GOP fears that broad Vote-by-Mail programs are likely to increase Democratic "turnout" in many, if not most, jurisdictions. Democrats are underestimating the amount of fraud and voter suppression possible with rushed, underfunded and under-staffed Vote-by-Mail programs, unless safeguards are carefully instituted. Many states have now postponed primaries until June. But disturbingly, Wisconsin still plans to hold primaries and a state Supreme Court election on April 7th, despite a state-wide 'stay at home' order. WI county elections officials warn they will not be able to adequately staff polling locations or ensure pollworker and voter safety, but Republican state legislators refuse to take the legislative action required to postpone or shift to an all-Vote-By-Mail election. In Georgia, the Republican Sec. of State Brad Raffensberger says he will mail absentee applications only to active voters, meaning legally registered voters who have been marked "inactive" by Raffensberger will not receive ballots. Also today: a record 3.28 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits this week, shattering the decades-old record, but Treasury Sec. Steven Mnuchin says the new record is "not relevant," because the Senate passed an emergency stimulus bill. The New York Times is doing a pretty good job of misleading the public, as well – a good reminder to support independent local journalism, alt-weeklies, and local, non-commercial, listener-supported radio stations working to keep the public informed during this pandemic.
