'BradCast' 6/1/2021 (Texas Dems save democracy...for now)

06-01-2021 (54.02 MB)

On today's 'BradCast':  Texas Democratic state lawmakers won a victory for democracy by walking out of the Texas' state House of Representatives late Sunday night, depriving the majority Republicans of the necessary quorum to ram through the GOP's massive anti-voting bill, effectively killing one of the most onerous pieces of voter suppression legislation introduced by any state since the 2020 elections – for now. After seeing how voter turnout increased markedly during the 2020 election with expanded pandemic-safe voting options, Texas Republicans moved quickly to put a stop to it in a state with one of the lowest voter turnout rates in the nation - further restricting voting by mail; reducing early voting and Sunday voting hours; criminalizing election officials for sending absentee ballot application requests to voters; outlawing driving more than two non-family members to the polls without the government's explicit permission; and deeply lowering the threshold of evidence for overturning an election. Texas' Republican Gov. Greg Abbott threatened to withhold lawmakers' pay in retaliation for Texas Dems' walkout, and says he will call a special session to finish the job. Texas Democrats pleaded with Congress to pass comprehensive federal voting and democracy reform legislation - unlikely as long as Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) block filibuster reform. At an unhinged QAnon conspiracy conference in Dallas, former Trump attorney Sidney Powell claimed Trump will 'reinstated,' and Trump's disgraced former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn said on videotape that a seditious Myanmar-style military coup 'should' happen in the US, then claimed he didn't say it.
