'BradCast' 1/13/2021 (Trump impeached again; Guest: Former diplomat, Rep. Tom Perriello of Open Society US)

01-13-2021 (53.73 MB)

On today's 'BradCast': Donald Trump made history yet again on Wednesday by becoming the first President to be impeached twice. Ten Republicans joined Democrats in the U.S. House to charge the soon-to-be-former President with "Incitement of Insurrection" for inflaming his violent MAGA mob before their deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol last week. But the vast majority of House Republicans argued and voted against accountability, many hypocritically threatening that impeachment would serve to anger Trump supporters further, and lead to more divisiveness and hostility. We share a number of lawmaker speeches delivered during the House floor debate, both for and against Trump's impeachment. Former Democratic Congressman and diplomat TOM PERRIELLO, now Executive Director of the Open Society Foundation-U.S., explains how the country might be able to carve a path forward to reconciliation and healing after Trump leaves office. As the U.S. Special Envoy to the African Great Lakes Region during the Obama Administration, Perriello draws on his extensive international experience in conflict resolution and transitional justice in war-torn countries to explain the steps that countries must take to ensure successful accountability and reconciliation. Perriello discusses several ways that President-elect Joe Biden can begin to help 'heal' the nation, rather than the repeating the mistakes of the Obama Administration's decision to 'look forward, not back', and offers key insights from his experiences as a congressman on today's historic second impeachment of Donald Trump. As Perriello noted in the New York Times, 'Countries that skip the accountability phase end up repeating 100 percent of the time -- but the next time the crisis is worse.'
