'BradCast' 2/16/2021 (Guest: Constitutional law and impeachment expert John Bonfiaz of Free Speech for People)

On today's 'BradCast': Record cold temperatures continue to batter dozens of states, knocking out power to millions, with Texas residents paying the highest price for their state government's failure to keep the electricity and water on. And nope, it wasn't renewable energy sources that failed, despite the lies of Fox 'News' misinforming their viewers today, but fossil fuel energy sources, deregulation and privatization that helped create the mess. Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) has filed a lawsuit against Donald Trump and rightwing extremist groups over the deadly insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, the first such lawsuit in an expected wave of litigation. Constitutional legal scholar JOHN BONIFAZ, Co-Founder and President of the non-partisan governmental accountability group Free Speech for People, explains various paths forward to ensure accountability for the former president, in the wake of the bipartisan 57-43 majority vote of U.S. Senators finding Trump guilty of inciting insurrection, but which did not reach the required two-thirds threshold to convict him. Bonifaz discusses Rep. Thompson's lawsuit, the 14th Amendment, potential criminal statutes and other mechanisms that could be utilized to hold the scofflaw former president to account. He also delves into the need for important reforms, from ensuring accountability for U.S. Congress members complicit in Trump's insurrectionist scheme to overthrow the election, reform of our electoral system to defend voting rights against new Republican voter suppression laws, and obstacles to reforming the Senate filibuster.
