'BradCast' 3/3/2022: (Legal journalist Mark Joseph Stern on US Supreme Court developments)
03-03-2022 (53.11 MB)
On today's 'BradCast': Some good-ish news in Russia's war on Ukraine, as a second round of peace talks resulted in a 'possible, temporary' ceasefire to establish safe corridors to allow humanitarian aid and evacuations of civilians in some areas of Ukraine. The U.N. says 1 million refugees have fled Ukraine in one week, a record, and warns that millions more could flee the unspeakable violence in coming weeks. The International Criminal Court has reportedly opened an investigation into Russian war crimes and atrocities. Russian troops have taken control of the major Ukrainian city Kherson. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pleaded for more international assistance to his country. In the U.S. House, three far-right Republicans voted against a non-binding resolution condemning Russia's aggression, and supporting the people of Ukraine and its sovereign territory. Slate's legal journalist MARK JOSEPH STERN reports on a number of new developments at the U.S. Supreme Court, with incisive analysis on President Biden's new nominee, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson; the disturbing role of dark money that is now affecting judicial appointments and has poisoned the U.S. judicial system; the rightwing court majority's push to create out a free-speech exemption for discrimination; a bonkers ruling giving a single, unelected, Trump-appointed federal judge control over the Navy’s special operations forces, and a stunning challenge brought by GOP-controlled states to strip the EPA of authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, that Stern warns could ultimately undermine the long-established regulatory authority of all federal agencies.
