'BradCast' 6/29/2022 (Election Results in 8 States, and the Tea Leaves of 'UNconventional Times')

06-29-2022 (53.2 MB)

On today's 'BradCast':  Critical midterm primary elections, runoffs, and special elections were held on Tuesday in Illinois, Colorado, Oklahoma, Utah, New York, Mississippi, South Carolina and Nebraska. Reports of voting problems were fairly limited. But some noteworthy races in a number of states may be telling, regarding the so-called 'Conventional Wisdom' that pre-emptively assumes that Democrats are due for a drubbing in the November midterms, simply because the party in power typically loses seats in the  midterm elections. Given these exceedingly unconventional times, it would be political malpractice to simply presume history will repeat. Several primary outcomes indicate that voter turnout may have spiked in response to the radical rightwing majority on the U.S. Supreme Court striking down women's reproductive rights. While several Trump-endorsed Republican candidates advanced to the general election, the primaries also brought substantive losses for 2020 election deniers, anti-choice zealots, and wildly corrupt Trump officials. There remains a chance that many mitigating factors could result in this year's midterms defying history, particularly if Democrats can figure out how to appropriately activate their base and independent voters who are furious about SCOTUS stripping away a constitutionally-protected individual right for the first time in the nation's history.
