'BradCast' 10/18/2021 (House Divided: Should Democrats Partisan Gerrymander Blue States to counter Republicans?)
On today's 'BradCast': General Colin Powell, the Republican former Secretary of State and Chair of the Joints Chiefs of Staff, has died of COVID-related complications amid a lengthy battle with cancer. Powell had apologized for his role in pushing the US to invade Iraq, but our focus today is on rightwing media dishonestly using Powell's death to falsely claim vaccines don't work -- we explain the numbers that demonstrate the facts that the unvaccinated helped kill Powell. The Biden White House is rewriting a key climate provision in the sweeping Build Back Better budget reconciliation bill known as the Clean Electricity Performance Program (CEPP), which would vastly reduce U.S. carbon emissions, in order to appease conservative Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of the coal state of West Virginia, who receives more campaign donations from the fossil fuel industry than any other senator. Then we throw open the phone lines to hear from listeners on whether Democrats should engage in the same level of constitutional hardball now being deployed by Republicans -- specifically whether Democrats should fight fire with fire, matching Republicans' use of extreme, unfair partisan gerrymandering during redistricting of new legislative maps that will determine the balance of power in the U.S. House. In a previous episode, gerrymandering expert David Daley, who literally wrote the book on the GOP's partisan gerrymandering schemes, explained why he is against Democratic states responding in kind to Republicans' extreme partisan gerrymanders, and Brad explained why he is reluctantly in favor of it to save democracy itself. Callers weigh in on both sides of the lively debate...
