'BradCast' 5/11/2021 (Guest: Cybersecurity journalist Kim Zetter)
05-11-2021 (53.93 MB)
On today's 'BradCast': A federal bankruptcy court judge in Texas has rejected the National Rifle Association's attempt to escape accountability for massive corruption and self-dealing, finding that the NRA was unlawfully trying to use bankruptcy proceedings to avoid litigation brought by NY State Attorney General Letitia James. In Arizona, despite claims from some state Republicans that they're 'embarrassed' by the 'audit' theater clown show underway in Maricopa County, the Republican-controlled state legislature passed new voter suppression legislation that critics charge disproportionately targets voters of color, including provisions to purge some 140,000 voters from the voter rolls and make it even harder to access the ballot box. Cybersecurity and national security journalist KIM ZETTER discusses the ransomware attack that led to the shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline, which supplies nearly half of the gas, jet fuel and diesel used on the Eastern Seaboard. Zetter explains how the attackers were apparently able to burrow into Colonial's corporate IT computer network, why her sources say the company decided to shut down the pipeline system, and the recent rise of ransomware attacks across the U.S., which are extraordinarily effective and difficult to prevent. Even today, the D.C. Metropolitan Police revealed that ransomware attackers have threatened to publish a sensitive list of police informants if the department doesn't pay up. Zetter also explains the security vulnerabilities of computerized voting and tabulation systems in the U.S., and the potential impacts of a ransomware attack on our election systems. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest 'Green News Report.'
