'BradCast' 5/11/2022 (Guest: Omar Ocampo of Inequality.org on corporate billionaire greed)
05-11-2022 (53.17 MB)
On today's 'BradCast': New encouraging numbers out today from the Labor Department suggest that surging inflation may have finally peaked, but Fox News reported it as bad news. In Nebraska and West Virginia primaries, corporate media framed the critical election results almost exclusively through the lens of what it means for Donald Trump, ill-serving the public at a time when democracy itself is under attack. As the nation's death toll from COVID hits a staggering 1 million, corporate CEOs and oil companies continue exacerbating inflation by raising consumer prices because they can do so with impunity, even while raking in record profits. A new report finds that during the pandemic, while you were struggling to stay employed, housed and fed, the net worth of the nation's 727 billionaires grew by an additional $1.71 trillion, greater than the entire annual GDP of Canada. OMAR OCAMPO of the Institute for Policy Studies Program on Inequality and the Common Good explains how it happened, and what actions can and must be taken to reverse this obscene trend. Ocampo discusses several policy ideas, including proposals long pushed by progressive members of Congress, from a wealth tax on the assets of the richest Americans, to partial student loan forgiveness, establishing a federal commission on profiteering with authority to claw back some of what has been robbed from American consumers, and more. Ocampo explains that enacting these proposals in the near-term will mean voting for more Democrats in Congress and all levels of government. Also today: Senate Republicans and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin blocked legislation to codify women's abortion rights into federal law. A federal appeals panel struck down a California state law restricting sales of semi-automatic firearms to ages 21 and older.
