'BradCast' 3/31/2022 (Biden Opens the Tap; Major Voting Rights Ruling in Florida)

03-31-2022 (53.43 MB)

On today's 'BradCast':  President Biden announced the release of 1 million barrels of oil per day, for as many as 180 days, from the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve to lower gas prices that have spiked due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Biden criticized Big Oil for profiteering, raising prices on consumers and making record profits while refusing to increase production, and he urged Congress to enact a 'Use It Or Lose It' law levying a fee for the industry's stockpile of 9,000 inactive, unused drilling permits on public lands.  Biden will also invoke the Defense Production Act to ramp up American production of minerals needed for electric vehicles, clean energy, and battery production. Biden also unveiled long-term actions to reduce energy demand through energy efficiency, and address the climate crisis by ending US dependence on fossil fuels. A federal judge in Florida struck down parts of the Republican-controlled state legislature's new voter suppression law as unconstitutional and racially motivated. Moreover, he invoked a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, used against repeat violators, which will force the state to obtain approval from the Justice Department before implementing new voting restrictions that have a racially discriminatory effect on voters. Even though the landmark ruling may ultimately be overturned by the corrupt, stolen-and-packed rightwing majority on the US Supreme Court, it is a critical marker in the fight to defend voting rights.
