'BradCast' 1/12/2021 (America or Autocracy?: GOPers Choosing Sides)

01-12-2021 (53.31 MB)

On today's 'BradCast':  Three days before the violent insurrection instigated by Donald Trump on the U.S. Capitol, former Republican campaign strategist Steve Schmidt argued that the Republican Party would be 'destroyed on January 6, stating, 'There are only two sides in American politics now. There is the American side and the Autocratic side. May God help us all if we falter, flag or fail in defense of American democracy.'  On Tuesday, the Pentagon's Joint Chiefs of Staff issued an unprecedented statement to the joint forces (and the nation), condemning the violent insurrection and affirming that Joe Biden will be inaugurated on January 20.  Several major corporations announced they will withhold campaign donations to Republicans who challenged states' Electoral College votes on Jan. 6. A small but growing number of Republicans expressed support for impeaching Trump, including Rep. Liz Cheney and Gov. Larry Hogan (R-MD). The GOP's biggest funder, billionaire Sheldon Adelson, died. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was fooled into believing Trump took some responsibility for his rhetoric that launched the deadly attack on the Capitol, and then Trump announced in a Texas visit that he took no responsibility whatsoever and his speech inciting the riot was 'totally appropriate.' Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger offers a moving, encouraging perspective in response to last week's violent, failed coup. Also today: Michigan is set to criminally charge former Republican Gov. Rick Snyder and other former top state officials for their actions leading to the Flint, MI water lead poisoning disaster.
